I have a salvage title bike. 2007 Bonneville T100 with 7k miles for $3400. Damage was all cosmetic and it has yet to give me any trouble. It's a bit of a gamble but if you buy from a reputable dealer who's willing to stand by their repair then it can be a pretty great deal.

I need help. So I’ve been riding for almost a year now I had a Vespa scooter but had so many problems with it that I wasn’t told about when I brought it. So I’m 20 years old, 5ft 8, I live in the uk so I’m stuck with a 125cc until I can get my next licence to get a bigger bike. I’m thinking about getting a Kawasaki klx 125 as the ride height is better for me and it’s a light bike with plenty of power for me to handle on these country roads I ride on. I’m also thinking about a Honda msx/grom coz it’s small and nippy so it’s not too heavy to rip round tight corners.
I need help if anyone is able to lend a few minutes. I’ll have about £1500 by December roughly.

I highly recommend staying away from used dirt bikes, unless you have a hookup on parts and can fix things yourself. 1. Dirt bikes require more maintenance and most people don’t maintain them.
    2. They are often listed well above what they are worth. 3. Most are tortured by younger people who actually didn’t pay for them so they’re often full of unseen issues waiting to arise.

Second hand prices in the UK really stink at the moment so buying new actually makes sense, if you can afford it that it! With new bikes having risen in price around 20% since 2018, 2 year old bikes are being listed for the price they were bought for. If this trend continues, which I imagine it will, your new bike will barely depreciate.

its always better to know that buying a used bike will always have problems. so be prepared to put works on it. in my experience:
    1. bike motor is the most important, get the bike still start up and running.
    2. always check for fuel pump, sprak plug, air filter, battery.
    3. get the bike you love so you will have more fun and willing to fix it. than get someting out of youtube.

I picked up a used KLR and fell in love, then had my heart broken with a thousand problems. Also, if the bolts were made of plastic, it'd be a huge upgrade. You can break some of them at just beyond finger tight. Now it's mostly good, except for the obnoxious knock that it developed. I saw some torn up shit in the left side case and replaced it thinking it was the problem, but - nope. I'm sure there's something floating around the bottom end causing all kinds of havoc wherever it goes. Maybe I can offload it to someone else for parts or some shit. Huge bummer though.

    • @marshymarsh20
      @marshymarsh20 4 года назад +2

Rob Robinson Fellow KLR owner here. Your problem is most likely your balancer chain tensioner aka the “doohickey”. This piece often breaks on many gen 1 KLRs and floats around in the bottom of your engine. Eagle mike sells an upgrade that will fix this issue.

Just to throw my hat in the ring here, I can heartily recommend a ZZR600 1993-2004 (and upwards I guess but as I understand it after that they made some major changes) aside from off-roading this thing literally does it all and in a very forgiving way, if you WANT to race it contrary to popular belief you CAN flick it into corners the same as most 600's which makes it funny to read a lot of reviews saying you can't the trick is for your elbow to be below your wrist line then you may be surprised just how manoeuvrable it really is. Honestly though where it shines is as a workhorse it eats miles for breakfast and with an absurdly comfortable seat and really reliable I can't think of a single time it's let me down, also with the way the tail section is built it is kinda begging for panniers and a top box but that may take a trip to a fabricator to sort out if you wanna do it right.
The only 2 points I would advise to look out for is the rear shock is kinda bad (I only noticed with a passenger it bottomed out a lot aside from that it didn't bother me personally but other people complain about it) but there are a few options to swap with that will clear that right up for example I hear the zzr1200 shock will more or less bolt right on and you get remote adjustment with it. The second thing is the gearbox, the guy who sold me mine said 4-5 were a little sketchy but not really anything to worry about...that's bullshit not only was it crunchy and jumped in and out of gear it locked up on me doing...not legal speeds...turned out the selector forks drum and gears were totally shot. Luckily (and I only found this out AFTER I took the whole engine out fixed it and found out how much of a pain it is to get back in) not only are gearboxes cheap but it IS possible to replace the gearbox without removing the engine but it takes a fair bit of finesse however gearboxes for the ZZR are dirt cheap and aside from getting the clutch basket off (honestly if you are replacing the whole thing just use a dremel to grind the basket retention nut off it's not worth the hassle) if it does hat that problem it's easy to fix.
Tl;Dr the ZZR600 often overlooked but absolutely well worth your time if you're looking for a bike that will do more or less anything you want it to do for very little money and maybe a day of work.

USB charging ports, 3m protective film, grip warmers, braided steel lines, valves done at a real shop... 2nd butterflies removed. I know there is more but I paid the same price as one that is completely stock. Thousands saved above saving thousands by not buying new.

My dudes, important question. Do I get a Power Commander or an ECU Flash? And why? I heard the Power Commander causes the bike to show check engine lights and stuff.

Great article. Never understood why new riders buy new bikes. Many lessons get learned the hard way, and its hard to relax in the saddle if you know a slight mistake and low speed spill is going to grind £££££ off the bodywork. Always helps, too, to find the less glamourous models for value. I have done the SV thing, have a 900 Hornet right now. Bought it four years ago....done 20,000 miles on it.....still looks and goes as well as ever. Minimal depreciation. A new bike will lose more value than that has while the ink dries on the credit agreement! Seasonal buying is another good call. You can pick up some bargains...but be prepared to travel. This year...I added a Sportster to the collection. Very low miles, very low saddle...half what a new one would cost me. Only a bit more corrosion than a new one comes with.....
I do buy fixer uppers though....but that can work if you buy a 'classic'. Been rebuilding a 750-4 over the last 2 years. Bought an unfashionable later model....paid a grand. Good ones were £3500 then. Now...£5000. At this rate...it might actually be worth the cost of restoration when I finish. But hey...all that peace and quiet in the shed is priceless when you have kids.

Also worth mentioning that you can buy a new left over motorcycle at a dealership for a good price. Example in 2018 I bought a new 2015 R3 the dealership still had for the same price, if not better than some used ones

I've noticed an odd thing about some classic used sport bikes.
Looking from the rear tire ,I have seen two sport bikes where the frame was so bent ,the rear seat is angled off to the left side of the bike.
Not centered on the rear wheel.
That's a hell of a road impact to do something like that, I would guess.
Unless the entire bike lines up,I won't buy it.
It also pays to take down the exact bike you want to buy,go home and bury yourself in internet forums where you can learn the problems others are having with their bikes.
I was very surprised at all the rusty gas tank forum entrys.
Replacement gas tanks can cost $800!
    If you can get them.
I guess ethanol laced gas just butchers the inside of gas tanks.
    And carbs too.

I dropped my 95' tenere a couple of times. Even though it's not in tip top shape(aesthetically), I still felt bad. It's my first bike and it's used, but I can't afford to treat it as such. Been saving for like 7 months to get it(for 1400€). If I wreck it, that's it, no more bike for me.

Yeah as someone that has been in the car industry and the motorcycle market for more than 10 years the salvage title thing is so true you really really have to know your stuff to buy a salvage title anything and 70% of the time it's a hard pass just spend your money on a clean title bike and leave the rest to us who have been in the scene for 10+ years more than likely you will get burned by some dude passing off his POS to you because you don't know what to ask.

17% interest? That’s criminal. Yes my first bike was a brand new 2019 bmw s1000rr, bought on July 17 2019. Did first oil change myself, and the bike has 1300miles now. I found it very easy to ride and learn on in Rain Mode, I ride in town almost exclusively so it stays in rain mode. I would like to ride it on a track once I have more experience - the only thing that surprised me was the yearly insurance, it’s almost 1100 usd which is more than my car lol. I have been watching this channel since 2017 but only ready after 2 years.

On rebuilt/salvage titles...this doesn't mean ALL are bad buys, if you are experienced and know what to look for. Unfortunately, if you know your way around a good rebuilt bike, you've probably been ripped off several times already, like me! 🤣🤣 For the record, when I've been ripped off, those were clean titles... Motorcycles also can slip under the radar and keep clean titles when they shouldn't. Generally, bring a gear head friend with you to inspect ANY bike as a second opinion.

In 2013 I bought a 2010 R6 raven edition from a dealership for $5,500. I think that was quite a steal. It had 4,300 miles and not a scratch. It was my first street bike (I had lots of experience in the dirt) and it’s served me well. It’s humbled me and given me confidence and I’ll never outgrow it. I do find myself wanting something else now and then but not for lack of on road performance and I’m certain I’ll never own a more beautiful bike.
