As much as I'm disappointed with the sequel trilogy as a whole, I acknowledge and respect the hard work that everyone put into the trilogy. I just hope they make more things in the future that'll be loved by the majority of Star Wars fans.
I genuinely loved all three sequel films upon first viewing in the theater. I still love "Force Awakens" every time that I rewatch it... just as much, if not more, as the first time I saw it. I enjoy rewatching "The Last Jedi" every so often, but it doesn't have quite the impact with subsequent viewings. As for "Rise of Skywalker"... I had a fun time with it for the first time in the theater; I just took it all in as it unfolded and accepted all of the nonsense. It was big, flashy fun. But I've never finished a rewatch of it. It feels so much like a film made to watch just that one time... Once, in the theater, simply to make that box office money. Trying to rewatch it makes most scenes feel as though they were made simply as a cheap 'pop' for the audience just to drag us along for a very weak story. Once I found out about what could have been Colin Trevarrow's "Duel of the Fates", it upset me even more over what we could have recieved as the final chapter in this epic story. I believe that they should have made that film with a re-cast Leia. I've heard pundits talk about Meryl Streep. I believe, had Disney approached her, and Fisher's family gave their blessing, she probably would have done it, and they could have shown us that story as it was intended. Episode IX could have been a wonderful, fitting end to this saga, yet this film seems so "one cool image after the other, who cares if it makes any sense?!"
For me its not that the sequel trilogy were poorly made films. On the contratry, they a wonderfully made films. The problem I have is that the story was not well structured and they marketed the product using diversity as a gimick and then made the movie about a boring character that skipped Jedi school and all of a sudden was the most powerful there is. Lazy writing, too much deus ex machina. And they killed off Luke in the most unceremonious way possible. A d stop hinting that Finn was a force sensitive. They could have just said that Leia trained him on the side too and boom, two jedi instead of one.
Watching this, it gets lost just how much effort goes into making a movie… the extras, the costume designers, the countless production assistants, the stunt actors, the catering crew (an army moves on its stomach), the office staff (paying the bills and addressing production issues)… All of this in hopes they are making something they’ll be proud of!
