@@chumplafayette9561 Sure, but your point about George Lucas being surrounded by talented people isn't something RLM ever disputed. They talk a lot about how the reason the first Star Wars (1977) worked was because Lucas listened to people's input and advices on how to improve on a work which could've been disastruous had he done it all himself. When it comes to the prequels you have some of the original crew working on it (Ben Burtt) but you also have a ton of eager and talented young people wanting to do the best they can. The problem is no one wants to argue with George at this point, especially not the producer Rick McCallum, who of all people should've reigned in Lucas.
Man, all those haters that focus on Jar Jar Binks and Anakin's hate for sand, they just don't see how amazing the world building is. I mean it spawned comics and videogames, it's just awesome the world George created with the prequels, even if you don't like them too much you have to admit it's world is beautiful. Also a wild Mark Renton appeared in 29:01
"world building" lmao.. you mean merchandising? I never had an issue with the effects of the settings. The execution and pacing is poor dependent on which sequel it is.
It's really cool to hear the actors go into depth when describing their role and how it fits into the overall story. I am not sure if its their dedication to understanding their character or whether they are truly that enthralled with the world Lucas has created, but either way it adds a depth to the film that you wouldn't necessarily get from a single viewing. It reminds you how thought out this story was, even down to the fighting techniques of different Jedi.
In 1992, my best friend's family got a VHS camcorder. We were in the 8th grade & wanted to make a movie. We tried to make our own SW:Ep 7 with an 8mm film camera using our action figures, but we weren't happy with the results. In 92, we were getting into Star Trek & decided to make a parody using good ol' VHS. We won several regional videography awards, so my faith in video was rock solid. Seeing GL fully embrace digital video was very exciting!
Seeing Hayden this cheerfull and excited, as opposed to how defeated and anxious he looks and sounds in all the new Kenobi interviews is really really sad

Yeah, when I was younger I liked them way more than the OT This sentiment has changed over the years a bit. My two favourite ones would be Return of The Jedi and Revenge of the Sith, I adore Empire Strikes Back, I thoroughly enjoy The Phantom Menace, and honestly think that A New Hope is the worst SW film
@@guciowitomski3825 A New Hope being the worst Star Wars film is one of the most unusual opinions I’ve ever seen! It’s my second favourite film of all time. Star Wars at its most fun and feel-good
Well, the fans theatened to kill him, scarred a kid for life and drive Ahmed to the point of considering suicide, so selling Star Wars may have been the smartest move in George Lucas' life
It is good. The only scene that was bad (which was a very important one) was the lightsaber fight. Ok yeah we got to see Yoda for two seconds but all this buildup and he really doesn't do much. He lost to Dooku. Never get the image of Anakin just standing there like a dumbass when fighting Dooku, that scene had so much potential.
Man is filming scenes for a movie coming out 5 years later and the entire sequel trilogy came out within 5 years with absolutely no plan and no idea where the story was heading at all, judge the prequels all you want but lucas had a clear vision from the get go and I'm glad we got to see it all. It's a shame it took dumpster fire of Disney films for some people to see the charm these films have
This really helped me in my media studies. One of my dreams is to be a camera operator and film something like this...to see it all happen and do so well it must be overwhelming
I've never understood the criticism these films received. To me, they’ve always been remarkable in their portrayal of human folly, poor decisions, platonic and romantic love, honor, and betrayal-all while showcasing breathtaking views and landscapes.
It’s so sad to see how this movie is really underrated and overhated, I feel most people didn’t really understood its meaning. Sure there are better ones on the franchise but this episode was a good one.
6:37. "I'm a visual filmmaker, as appose to a literary filmmaker. *The movie doesn't rest in the dialogue, it rests in the visuals*." Well, at least now we have an answer.
The prequels by George Lucas was what got me interested in Star Wars. I was so intrigued and blown away by the visionary ideas, the planets, the aliens, the flying vehicles, the droids, the architecture. A captivating work of art. I loved all the actors. The Star Wars by disney were really awful. They were not visionary at all. Everything about Disney's Star Wars was downgraded from the stunning worlds Lucas created.
In a few years, the common theme will be, "the sequels weren't as bad as everyone said". I guarantee it. Youngsters who grew up on the sequels, will feel just as you do about the prequels. They'll talk about how great the sequels were, and how those fogies who grew up on the prequels couldn't appreciate the sequels. How they only loved the prequels due to childhood nostalgia for them. It's like poetry, it rhymes. Until they finally stop making these movies. Neither prequels, nor sequels were needed, and neither come close to the original trilogy. I love the OT for the same reason you love the prequels - it's just that the prequels, and especially this one, are awful. Stilted dialogue, senseless storylines, excessive use of CGI, ridiculous characters and scenes. Cliched lines. The actors aren't bad, but they seem bad, they seem wooden, because the words they're saying are not believable. But people will defend the sequels. When they came out, the prequels were suddenly great again.
@ultrabrian8151 For me, there are just two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi I have not and never will see another Star Wars movie. The Disney Star Wars is trash. The prequels were slapped together, excessive, and frankly, bad. Both are bad, sequels and prequels. Just because the sequels are bad, doesn't make the prequels automatically good. That's senseless. They're both bad, and mostly bad.
Wow! Amazing just Amazing! This really shows how much goes into making a Hollywood block buster movie but not just any though an epic saga immortalised and one of the very best!
I watched these behind the scenes docuseries a few years ago and love to revisit. One thing that always sticks with me is how nice Ahmed Best is. You always see him happy and smiling, in different departments ect. Its a shame that he personally was subjected to a huge amount of backlash for a character he portrayed. I think most realise that looking back in hindsight, it was massively uncalled for, and I think that seeing these behind the scenes documentaries really open your eyes and give you a different perspective in that we are all human.
As someone who watched the entire Lucas era of Star Wars films recently, I really fail to understand the hate the prequels got. They are not as good as the original, but in my opinion they are still good films, and fantastic Star Wars films at that. They seem dated now, but at the time I am sure they were visually stunning. The acting can be a little janky at times, but it doesn't work to distract you from the film. Maybe the storyline doesn't have as much 'flow' as the original, but then again I feel like working backwards in any film series will suffer from this issue of continuity, since you are restricted into a forced outcome. Honestly, I feel like the hate they got was completely unjustifiable, completely exaggerated and suffered from serious bandwagonism where people pile on the hate on a film that maybe did underperform, solely because it was hyped up to be an inevitable disappointment. The story is engaging, the visuals and camera work are very good, especially considering they were pioneering and experimental at the time and they all have a unmistakable 'Star Wars' feel to them. Go into it blind, like I did, with literally zero expectations, and you will see they are very engaging, enjoyable and classic films. Lucas, and all involved in the prequels, is owed a massive apology.
Dialogue was pretty bad but the overall story was great, and you had some great performances by Ewan McGregor, Samuel L. Jackson, and so many others, and I think Revenge of the Sith is overall an incredible movie
Oh and yeah, he did it. He inspired and created the means for what might be the best looking and most efficiently made television series of all time. The Mandalorian is all of this work realized. Can’t wait to see what the Kenobi miniseries looks like
When it comes to Cinema, and how movies are made, how they look, and the technical side that goes into, the Prequels were just as influential as the originals. Especially the technology with CGI and green screens creating characters and sets, and creating a whole atmosphere from digital effects. The prequels were groundbreaking in that aspect. Unfortunately its been so over done, abused, and depended on. Due to budgets and deadlines and many other things, CGI is usually half ass nowadays and its refreshing to see practical effects and real performance
When I first saw Star Wars Episode II, I didn't like Hayden's performance at all. But years later, after learning about Anakin/Vader's life, what we haven't seen on film. I truly love his performance and understand why Anakin was portrayed the way he was by Hayden.
I will be completely honest. It may not be THE best Star Wars film of them all, but everytime I watch it I get a nice, warm feeling about it. It's hard to explain and what I said can lead to easy jokes haha, but I guess what I mean is that it is a rather enjoyable and light hearted and enjoyable Star Wars story. We see the Republic in times of peace (mostly) we see Anakin and Padme happy, visiting beautiful scenarios, before everything goes downhill in ROTS, and even though their chemistry as a couple and their dialogues aren't that strong in this film, it is all enhanced by the story about these characters itself, and by the heavenly soundtrack Across the Stars. Something about their romance is just heartwarming in this film and is made even more poignant when it is contrasted to these characters' tragic outcome later on. The film also has some quite unique and enjoyable scenes in the franchise. Even with its flaws I consider Attack of the Clones an enjoyable watch and (as a prequels kid) one of my favourites.
Yeah everyone has different taste on how they view a particular movie or trilogy you know like besides Stat Wars or Indiana Jones you have like The Lord of the Rings and Star Trek. Theres always a love hate relationship with these kinds of Trilogies and it hits different for alot of people and usually it can be a cultural impact too. Sure you look back as an adult and your like damn this or that looks put off or a particular dialog seems to clunky or unnecessary or blah blah blah but when your a child it hits on another level that you don't see thing like this you know. I mean I live on nostalgia no doubt about it. I buy literally retro Star Wars Merch all the time if it intrigues me. I was a prequels kid and my uncle got me into star wars when they rolled around since he went thru the OG when he as well was a kid and now my 10 year old daughter loves the sequels even though I have a different taste but you know if they like it let them love it even if you have a different opinion but I see this a generational thing kids watch the OG then have kids there kids see the prequels there parents may love it or hate it but the kids love it then those prequel kids grow up and have kids and there kids see the sequels again parents have different opinions but there kids loves it so yeah again love hate relationship kids loves it, adults dislikes it. At least to some not all. Star Wars is a kids movie you can tell by the pattern I've somewhat made. Don't like it don't watch it. Its not that hard but I encourage you to watch it with your kids regardless of your disire.
“It’s something we haven’t done before” is so refreshing to hear and see after most modern movies just want to show you what you remember. And I’m not even a big prequel fan but you have to respect wanting to show something new and different
I hope that young filmmakers watch and look at this stuff in order to appreciate films in the way they should be appreciated. How they were made and the art of telling a story through visual media.
@@sheikbombalot5781 The prequels had a lot of issues, particularly with the writing and George Lucas' creative control. They are still pretty inspiring for filmmakers though. Anything from the ILM and the art departments on all three films are pretty incredible.
Interesting tidbit in this documentary at ~@16:15 So they’re obviously shooting Ep. 2 Attack of the Clones but here Hayden & George were talking about Ep. 3 Revenge of the Sith Quick tangent: The Owen homestead is in the same spot it’s just been rebuilt it’s stated here. Anyway So Lucas having good prescience along with his insane imagination told Hayden they were doing a shot right then for Ep. 3 Revenge of the Sith That’s pretty crazy If you followed Lucas’ Star Wars development & writing trajectory you learn that he had a lot of it in his head but the scripts & stuff were done individually because things developed & changed along the way. So it’s likely that during the Clones shoot here, the Sith story let alone script wasn’t even committed to paper yet. I’m not positive about that thought. So I guess it was the Sand People episode which is a salient moment. Still it’s pretty crazy to have the foresight & have a story of this scope in your mind you’re able to shoot it a couple years beforehand. We always get reminded how much of a madman George Lucas is.
This is the happiest Ive seen George, frankly. Kind of betrays the image of him as a quiet, socially awkward grump. Here he’s joking around, having fun and seems like a bit of a wind up merchant.
The way George says to Samuel L. Jackson, "You might ge purple..." You can see the wheels turning. "There is only green and blue for Jedi, but purple...could be a great toy!"
I absolutely love Hayden's performace in the prequels. I don't seem to understand people's complaints... everything he does depicts the nature of Anakin's character.
It was nothing but what their preconcieved notions of what Vader should be. They imagined a Luke/Han hybrid for some reason. Similar to what we got in Clone Wars.
Even if Hayden's acting was "stiff" (i don't think it is, he's more than capable) it would have fit his character. He plays a 19 year old who's lived his life trapped in the walls of a religious temple for the last decade, constantly doubted by his own teachers no matter how much he proves himself. Of course Anakin would be a bit "awkward" and unstable.
It is amazing how much imagination everyone had to work with to end up making a movie like that! I don't quite get why there are peopke who hate on epsiode 1-3. All movies 1-6 are amazing as a whole. If anyone wants to hate, hate on 7-9. Those are garbage
Temuera has to be the second luckiest actor in all of Star Wars, next to Anthony Daniels. He gets to be Jango, every Clone Trooper ever, and later Boba. Does he get royalties for every Clone Trooper figure? What about Boba, does he get the later ones? The voice recording work for all of those characters had to be just downright long days. What happened to those cameras used to shoot it?
@@histguy101 a less cynical take is that they didn't know the full potential of CGI then. You can tell how excited they were and the limitations weren't as obvious as they are now. That's innovation for you, even if the final result is flawed
@@BlueisNotaWarmColour I think they exaggerated a lot of it though. They also exaggerated how much cg was being used in Matrix trilogy and Lord of the Rings as well. They gave the impression that they were building whole sets in a computer when all 3 trilogies were using mostly using it for compositing, projecting crowds, lighting, and some experimental cg stunt doubles and whatnot.
Isn't it ironic that the Mandalorian has taken this to its logical conclusion by filming with a completely digital stage where they display the background for the actors to see while the film. Lucas arts, Lucas films and ILM have given more to movies than any other single studio in history. More than MGM, universal or anyone

GOD I LOVE HAYDEN
On god
Ahmed Best just shows up in every different production department. Almost like he just wants to be involved in everything going on. Love him.
Man, all those haters that focus on Jar Jar Binks and Anakin's hate for sand, they just don't see how amazing the world building is. I mean it spawned comics and videogames, it's just awesome the world George created with the prequels, even if you don't like them too much you have to admit it's world is beautiful.
Also a wild Mark Renton appeared in 29:01
Yea I never understood the jar jar hate either. He wasn't bad at all and like George said, it was meant for kids at the time.
"world building" lmao.. you mean merchandising? I never had an issue with the effects of the settings. The execution and pacing is poor dependent on which sequel it is.
I love the gadgety tech sound effect of the cassette player at 2:59 opening up. Sounds like a sci-fi video game. Love it!
10:14 Nick is goddamn hilarious. "R4 is just R2 painted red!" Hahhhaaahahahaaah
Seeing Hayden this cheerfull and excited, as opposed to how defeated and anxious he looks and sounds in all the new Kenobi interviews is really really sad
Also, I love how Ahmed Best always just shows up in different scenes without much input or anything, just kinda stands there
Huh? Hayden looked excited and happy in the interviews/promotional videos I saw around Kenobi
I always put off watching the prequels because of the hate they got but I finally watched them and I love them. They aren’t even close to how bad people make them seem
Agreed. They are not up to to the same standard as the original 3 films but compared to the garbage that Disney has made they are amazing.
@@braxxian the prequels are as great as the original trilogy.
Yeah, when I was younger I liked them way more than the OT

Hayden defined the character. I can’t see anyone else playing as anakin .
Agreed, Hayden IS Anakin.
Told he was the chosen one only for everyone to doubt him

I miss the non-Disney SW.

Epsylon - BrickCreations yeah but we're never gonna get new star wars not by disney
Well, the fans theatened to kill him, scarred a kid for life and drive Ahmed to the point of considering suicide, so selling Star Wars may have been the smartest move in George Lucas' life
@@jarodcito Selling it? Yes. Selling it to Disney? No.
The most underrated Star Wars film imo
These are always so much fun to watch. I wonder how much unused footage of this stuff there is. I’d surely love to see more
Man is filming scenes for a movie coming out 5 years later and the entire sequel trilogy came out within 5 years with absolutely no plan and no idea where the story was heading at all, judge the prequels all you want but lucas had a clear vision from the get go and I'm glad we got to see it all. Yeah and his vision sort of sucked compared to his original 3 visions from 77, 80 and 83.
This really helped me in my media studies. One of my dreams is to be a camera operator and film something like this...to see it all happen and do so well it must be overwhelming
It must of sucked that people hated on him for using special effects, they talk about how hard it was to do even one scene.
45:17 "The fight scene with Obi-Wan Kenobi..." **Ewan kisses Temuera's cheek**
I've never understood the criticism these films received. To me, they’ve always been remarkable in their portrayal of human folly, poor decisions, platonic and romantic love, honor, and betrayal-all while showcasing breathtaking views and landscapes.
It’s so sad to see how this movie is really underrated and overhated, I feel most people didn’t really understood its meaning. Sure there are better ones on the franchise but this episode was a good one.
The constant background music in this documentary + ROTS kinda kills it. TPM one doesn’t, and it makes it so pure.
6:37. "I'm a visual filmmaker, as appose to a literary filmmaker. *The movie doesn't rest in the dialogue, it rests in the visuals*." Well, at least now we have an answer.
Well George is right, I don't think he was saying the dialogue is unimportant, but that showing something is better than saying it 😁
Amazing that one man can write perfect dialogue AND create perfect visuals.
@@starwarsnerdiness5175 I don't think anyone can claim that the dialogue in star wars is actually good.
@@jabjav-c3y It's good.
@@starwarsnerdiness5175 ok then, you've obviously only watched films with relatively worse dialogue than star wars...
@ultrabrian8151 For me, there are just two sequels:
The Empire Strikes Back
and
Return of the Jedi
I have not and never will see another Star Wars movie.
Such an inspiring making of documentary. AOTC Rules!!
Popping into the algorithm 4 years later and this video aged spectacularly
I watched these behind the scenes docuseries a few years ago and love to revisit. One thing that always sticks with me is how nice Ahmed Best is. You always see him happy and smiling, in different departments ect. Its a shame that he personally was subjected to a huge amount of backlash for a character he portrayed. I think most realise that looking back in hindsight, it was massively uncalled for, and I think that seeing these behind the scenes documentaries really open your eyes and give you a different perspective in that we are all human.
I love all these people.. and hayden too (big idol ❤️) this is starwars 💯❤️
say what you will about this movie but this movie has some of the best star wars scenes and it’s cool to see the clones appear
1:12:00 amazing, their love story is great
As someone who watched the entire Lucas era of Star Wars films recently, I really fail to understand the hate the prequels got.

If you don't watch that first 6 in a half minutes, and think how innovative GL was. Your crazy. Especially in 2024
Well George they are all shooting on digital now! Only a very few use film nowadays
When I first saw Star Wars Episode II, I didn't like Hayden's performance at all. But years later, after learning about Anakin/Vader's life, what we haven't seen on film. I truly love his performance and understand why Anakin was portrayed the way he was by Hayden.
I wish those props would been preserved in a museum because they are so amazing 😢
Love that. I feel similarly about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), which is my second favorite Indiana Jones movie
Thank you for compiling all these into an awesome documentary so I can save myself lots of time and sanity really nice work
“It’s something we haven’t done before” is so refreshing to hear and see after most modern movies just want to show you what you remember. And I’m not even a big prequel fan but you have to respect wanting to show something new and different
the prequels are really good as they got me into star wars and revenge of the sith is proably my favourite star wars movie
I hope that young filmmakers watch and look at this stuff in order to appreciate films in the way they should be appreciated. How they were made and the art of telling a story through visual media.
Lol! Yes, we need young filmmakers to be inspired by Lucas’s soulless prequels!
@@sheikbombalot5781 The prequels had a lot of issues, particularly with the writing and George Lucas' creative control.
They are still pretty inspiring for filmmakers though. Anything from the ILM and the art departments on all three films are pretty incredible.

Episode 2 is my least favorite of the 6 star wars movies, but I really appreciate it for the amazing world building it has. The best in the series
What do you mean by "world building" ?
I’m at a Actor school at the moment, and able to see this makes me smile. :)
this was the first star wars film I saw in a theater. it really meant alot to me as a kid… 🥺
Totally agree
It was nothing but what their preconcieved notions of what Vader should be. They imagined a Luke/Han hybrid for some reason. Similar to what we got in Clone Wars.
Wow, I've seen George in quite a few interviews now, but here he looks completely exhausted.
THIS IS A LEGENDARY QUOTE, "I DONT CARE ABOUT NO STINKIN EYELINES... WHO CARES ABOUT EYELINES"

I really wish George would have sold Star Wars to anyone but Disney. His ideology goes against everything Disney stands for.

Idealogy lol. The man only cares about $$$. And Disney were the only ones with that kind money...
He was close to selling the SW franchise to Fox.
Maybe Universal would've treated Star Wars better.
Fox would probably have been better than Disney, lol!
I think this really solidifies starwars as one of the best High fantasy series ever made.
