  • An unlikely comparison, China and The USA. I have lived in China for over 10 years, and recently had a chance to travel to America for a long roadtrip. I wanted to make a video highlighting the differences between the 2 countries in food, economy, and culture.
Two wildly different countries. What are the differences between China and America? Safety, Food, cost of living and the people...

I am a criminologist/forensic psychologist in the US & I think may Europeans don't understand the violence in the US. There are two big misconceptions I see regularly.
First off, most countries in Europe count crime very differently than the US does. Most European countries have, for example, an intent requirement before a murder is counted in the national stats. The US counts virtually everything. If one person assaults another & a person dies it gets counted as a homicide. Even self defense situations get counted. It's justifiable homicide, still goes on the books as a homicide.
This makes the homicide rate in the US look significantly higher than most countries in Europe, when, in actuality, a good portion of that difference is simple differences in reporting practices. Now, Britain & Australia are the only other reasonably large countries that keep centralized, consistent, national records on par with the US but neither Britain or Australia allow criminologists access to actual crime reports. If we want to study Britain, we must use government supplied stats. This makes a real, apples to apples comparison virtually impossible. We can't go in & review the reports on individual murders to adjust for those differences in reporting practices.
Officially, the homicide rate in the US is just about 4x as high as Britain. (3.9 per 100,000 in US and about 1 per 100,000 in Britain) In actuality, if we coded (counted & defined) homicide the same in both countries the rate wouldn't be nearly as lopsided. How much closer would those numbers be? Who knows. I worked at a large jail in the US & for a few months I applied what I know of British coding practices to US homicide cases & fewer than 1/2 of cases we count would get counted in Britain but my methods couldn't really be considered stringent, just a quick look at the police reports & a snap judgement. My hunch is an apples to apples comparison would yield results of the homicide rate in the US to be 30 to 50% higher than Britain but that's little more than an educated guess.
The second thing people in Europe don't understand is violence in the US is far, far less random. Every country has a large % of their violence coming from criminal on criminal but in the US, that is highly pronounced. In the US somewhere between 75-85% of homicides stem from gang on gang or some type of criminal enterprise that can be tied to the victim. These are participatory crimes in that the victim was involved in some type of criminal enterprise that resulted in them getting targeted.
In most countries in Europe only about 50% of homicides are participatory. The other half, roughly, are random.
In short, if anyone wants to visit the US but is nervous about it, relax. The homicide rate isn't nearly as high as you think it is & it's highly concentrated in gang areas among gang members.
So long as your vacation plans don't include joining a gang, you will probably be just fine. Exactly like serpentza says in his video, if you leave the questionable people alone, they will leave you alone too. If you are worried about random gun crime, just keep in mind that the criminals don't know if you have one yourself or not. If you were a criminal, would you risk getting shot to attack someone you don't know for pocket money & maybe a credit card good for 1 or 2 charges? Not to mention, just look at the numbers, 4 in 100,000 is 1 in 25,000 per year. If you don't even factor in not joining a gang those are still pretty good odds in your favor. If you stay for a month, pure statistics wise, you have a 1 in 300,000 chance of getting murdered (even less if you are female)so relax, come visit the good old USA & stuff your face. We won't murder you! Well, probably not. ;)
Good Day All !! Ms. Shannon

Thank you for that Ms. Shannon. Comparison between nations in terms of crime is such a mess due to the vast differences in reporting methods. Survey based crime comparisons are not very reliable in my opinion either due to cultural differences and especially media differences.

I lived in China for 10 years, and to this video, i'll say almost everything he says are wrong.
For example, he says every crime happens in China did not reveal in news. If it's not reveal in news, and he says he did not personally experienced any crime in China(says in previous video), how come he know that China is very dangerous? By just guessing?
Another example is, in his previous videos he says in China there's no way of getting in to foreign websites, but the reality is that you only need to download an app from phone or install a hardware of your computer, then you are very free to get into every foreign websites, I see my teachers, friends and classmates in China are just so freely to go to foreign sites.

One of the most striking things about the difference in food between America and many other places I've been is how conversant Americans are with the cuisines of the world. There are large thriving ethnic communities all over. This has resulted in practically everyone having access to at least somewhat authentic food from just about everywhere. (There is quite a food scene here and a quest for authenticity). Its fairly common to eat some other national cuisine at least once a week, if not daily. (I have at my lunch disposal, 3 Mexican restaurants, 2 Mediterranean, 1 Japanese, 2 Vietnamese, a Thai, and at least one burger joint, all with in 5-10 minutes walk). When I travel no matter how much I like the food in a given place, after a week or so I always need to eat something completely different.

@Naikomi Problem is most European food sucks ass. Scandinavian food is shit, French food is weird, German food is okay, Spanish food is garbage (Mexican food is better!) Eastern euro stuff is meh too. Only European food that is god tier is Italian obviously. America has all the asian foods, latin american foods (real shit too not that bullshit in europe) soul food (black american food) and american food like texas brisket and all that amazing bbq. I'm actually shocked you'd try to flex on us, Europe's foreign restaurants are notoriously bad and poor at replicating the real thing. Like mexican food in Europe is notoriously dogshit. In Los Angeles we have very authentic asian food because we got the immigrants!

    • @TheBucketSkill
      @TheBucketSkill 3 года назад +8

@Naikomi Are you serious? No where is there better Vietnamese food or Japanese or Korean food than in California's big cities. Other than the actual countries themselves. You realize the Asian diaspora on the west coast of the USA is literally the biggest. Koreantown in Los Angeles is the closest you can get to Korea outside of Korea. Vietnamese immigrants moved here en masse after the Vietnam war ended, and even now they still immigrate here and bring there cuisine. It's not just white people trying to emulate, it's real. I can't think of a single place in Europe asians have immigrated to en masse like that.

The USA is a mastermind of the capitalism. If people walk, profits are lost, who will buy 2-3 cars per family and use petroleum to fill these cars, lower health means higher profits on medicine, etc. Even people who live on the border of poverty own at least one car. Everything is ordered to make people spend money. The thing that shocks me the most, you can get a meal relatively cheaply, but to buy "organic" apples 0.5kg (1lb) will cost you x2-3 as much. To eat healthy seems like a luxury.

    • @Douglas.Kennedy
      @Douglas.Kennedy 8 лет назад +10

it's not a conspiracy, really. people like to live in the suburbs where they can have big cheap houses and big yards. you have to have a car to get to work and shopping. all the work places and shopping centers have to have big parking lots. This makes the cities very spread out, and very inconvenient to walk.
I have to walk about a mile to buy groceries or see a restaurant. A mile of boring residential neighborhoods. If you walk a mile from your home in an Asian city like Taipei, you will pass multitudes of places to eat and shop. Your walk along the way will likely be more interesting too.
there are dense urban areas in America too, like new York city, but the majority of the population lives in a manner that demands a car. Mostly by their own choice.

    • @MrBryanBeaty
      @MrBryanBeaty 8 лет назад

You make a very good point here. I think that many people fail to realize just how spread out the US population is. Outside large cities, having a car is not really a luxury as many people outside the nation seem to believe: it is a necessity. I will note for those not as familiar with US customs that it is quite common for people to live in smaller cities (in large part because as you mentioned, the cost of living is much lower) and commute into larger ones, like New York and Chicago. A 'normal' commute could be more than an hour drive and be distances up to 100 km or so.

    • @coweatsman
      @coweatsman 8 лет назад

American cities have evolved with cars such that you need a car in most American cities. Suburbia fuelled by cheap energy. The recipe for suburbia is really simple. Take a city and add energy.

    •  8 лет назад +1

Yeah, I understand that. But, construction ideas (housing in suburbs) came from the '60s when the great nation was "recovering" and there had to be money in the flow. But, the thing is, close to 60 years has passed, economy changed, environment changed, some things are not in abundance any more… I don’t think about capitalism in a bad light, what would people do with the money if they didn’t spend it, keep it in a bank or in socks. If they spend it, yes some will go into greedy hands but some will go into research of new technologies and thus improving the living standards. But the sad thing is, we can buy more of everything, but at the same time we are less healthy and more depressed and big houses, big cars, big meals will not help with that.

The key for most people to keep their weight under control is to first, cook fresh food at home which we do most of the time. When eating out here in America, immediately cut your portion in half and only eat half; take the rest home for another meal. And of course get some exercise. Keep it simple. Don't worry about the idiot on TV selling you workouts to have six-pack abs. Just go for a bike ride, or a walk, or chop some wood. It worked for me most of my life until I got cancer, and I'm battling my way back from that - but that is a very different situation! Its easier now because my wife and I are in our late 50s/early 60s and we just split meals. Skip options for carbs like fries, chips, fried onion bushes, etc...

About the medical adverts on US TV. It actually isn't because of the weight problem. It is actually because the USA is one of the very few, if not the only, developed countries in the world that allows pharmaceutical companies to advertise prescription medications directly to the public. It blows most people who visit the States' minds. And really, it is weird. It would be like turning on the TV and seeing a commercial saying "Make sure your surgeon is using our high-end scalpel". Why are you telling me that? I leave that up to the knowledge and expertise of my surgeon. And that is likely the way it should be with prescription drugs. They are literally telling you to go to your doctor and tell them what is wrong with you and ask for the treatment that you want. It has created a culture where we are extremely aware of the drugs on the market and it makes them a common discussion point which takes even more power away from the licensed experts, the doctors.

That's true about the passports. But it's really unfair because we often get compared to Europe, where the countries are as small as our western states. If they lived in a massive country, with so much diversity, that was the leading cultural force in the world, they probably wouldn't leave too often either. They can get on a train and be in a place with totally different languages and customs in two hours. In two hours, I can't even make it out of my state in a car. However, there is a lot of diversity in my state (Indian tribes, Mexican communities, heck, there's even a really active Burundian community in my city, which before I met some of them, I didn't even know was a country). Also, many Europeans have a ridiculous amount of vacation time compared to us, so it's easier, not to mention cheaper, for them to travel.
Also, yeah gun crime is real, but most of it is driven by gang violence, as you implied. If you're an average citizen not involved in crime, your chances of getting shot just walking down the street, especially if you are cognizant of what times and places you choose to do so, is astronomically small.
Poverty is real in the US, but our poor are better off than just about anywhere in the world. You can bring up healthcare, but it's not like any hospital is going to turn them away, and the care they'll get is quick and top-notch. They'll be in debt for a while though, certainly, but if they're already poor, not much will change. Our poor have many more luxuries than the poor in 99% of the world. Not to say it isn't an issue, but unfortunately there will always be some group of people who are lagging behind the rest, no matter how good living standards are. Nobody can ever be equal, even under communism (instead of innovators getting rich, it's the politically connected). Is there corruption in business in the US? Certainly, but by global standards, it's quite low.
But yeah, the weight problem is serious - most of the reason we got hit hard by covid compared to some was because of our already poor health. However, that just goes to prove my point about poverty - have you noticed it's often the poor who are overweight? Yeah, part of it is that they're getting low quality processed food. (It's really not that expensive to eat a bit healthier, though. You don't have to buy all organic to eat fairly healthy. I think it's partially a cultural issue.) But the point remains that they are getting more than enough calories to survive, despite the fact they are poor. The same can't be said for most countries around the world.
If we didn't have an obesity problem worsening all of our health metrics, the numbers would show that we probably have the best healthcare in the world - it's just way too expensive because of insurance price obfuscation and American subsidization of drug research and development (the vast majority of new drugs globally are produced here, but most countries refuse to pay enough to cover the R&D because of their single-payer healthcare systems, so the cost of that falls upon the American consumer, unfortunately).
Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point, I just really want Americans to understand how good we have it. I had to live in a developing country to truly get it.

    Personal idea:
Not only have you only seen the facade of America, you have also only seen the facade of China, even though you said you have been living there for a quite long time. Some things you said are so obviously outlandish, it proves you actually know little about the society, and looks just like an outsider.
You remind me of another African guy I had met when I was in China 2 years ago. He complained a lot and there were definitely some fear and frustration in his words. But he insisted in staying in Wuhan. He tried to date a Chinese, and wanted to buy a small apartment. He told me it was really the job that held him.
If you do not become more positive toward your life staying in one place, there is little point staying there. Changes should be made to make yourself happy.
    Solution:
    1. Back to west.
You have been working in Shenzhen for about 10 years, thus should be able to buy a very comfortable life easily in SA.
    2. To know the local
Learning the spoken language and go, chat with locals. The more you do, the more you know what is beneath your guesswork. (What you can avoid easily, what you can just ignore )
So far, still an outsider. (no offence)

Well, yeah, here in America, you buy a house, and the land on which it sits. Of course, it all belongs to the bank until you pay it off after 20 or 30 years; however, whether you solely own it or not, you pay big taxes on it, depending on the state you live in. Here in Maryland, USA, the land taxes are ridiculous. And much of the time, you are subject to an HOA (Home Owner's Association), which is a communist organization (and I mean that in the most cynical of terms), where you are expected to maintain a certain landscape aesthetic, right down the color of your own house. You can't just paint your house whatever color you like. So, do we really own the house and the land it sits on? I think not.

One thing that most people don’t take advantage of in restaurants is the “take-home box” to take any food you can’t eat that you’ve ordered but that you don’t want to waste. I don’t eat out much anymore but I have used them, and reheated the leftovers to enjoy again. I used to try to “clean my plate”, because that’s how I was brought up, since “there are children starving overseas so don’t waste food.”

I have to disagree on the whole safety comparison between China and US, just because you didn't get stabbed for a week or two in US, it doesn't make America safer. The gun problems are huge in America (the shootouts are rare, but the debate about gun controlling issue have drawn a lot of attention from the media and the public), though you made a right claim of "some regions are more dangerous than some districts", but usually you wouldn't be able to predict where the gun shooting and robbery would happen. And China do report local crimes, they are usually reported online or on local TV channels (by the form of city channel like SuZhou news); of course you wouldn't find reports about stabbings, robbery on TV channels owned by the province, but larger accidents, civil crimes with serious influence will be reported. And it is really safe to go out in China at night, but there is absolutely no chance to convince me taking a walk outside in US even in some downtowns like San Francisco.

It's become trite to repeat the same refrain about guns are almost unobtainable in Chicago yet people still get them. Well people buy them from a well known gun shop in another county in Illinois and they also go across state line where there are lax gun laws. As long as gang members want to kill other gang members or even white out their entire race why should you care unless you're some sort of beneficent or philanthropist.

Then throw-in others (teachers unions, which seek high valuations in cities because real estate taxes go into the educationists' coffers). It means insane, irrational, non-objective, scenarios. x*D

I am an American and I totally agree with your assessment on food portions. I will add that I went to Japan for just 3 weeks and I fell in love with their food. Pretty much every meal just "felt" healthy, but it took over a week before my pallet found its footing in the food. I lost about 15 pounds (OK, it was August 90 degrees F= 32 C and 98% humidity). When I returned to the US, it was instantly obvious that most food had way too much fat/oil, sugar, and salt/sodium. We took the title as #1 place for obesity in the world recently. Yay - USA #1. It's the food industry in general and a feed-back mechanism that in turn demands all of the fore-mentioned bad properties. Take only soda for example. If someone were to make a more "healthy" soda with much less sugar, it would likely take a couple of weeks of consuming this less sweet beverage to find it "tasty", but people will instantly reject it because it isn't sweet enough, bad media would follow, sales would drop and the corporate office analysis would not even take the risk of diverting from a successful model already in place. It's the same with most already successful good-tasting, but unhealthy foods. So I'm afraid we're likely stuck in this until the Earth tilts on its axis. Sadly, it might be geophysicists experts which demand we solve the problem. :-| ... and now pot gaining legal status across the states!? Ok, now that's just, diet-wise, cruel social policy!

Rent prices here in Phoenix have changed DRASTICALLY. I live with my dad in a tiny one bedroom apt for $1600/mo in a less desirable area, mainly because neither of us can afford that on our own. Plus since he's a veteran the VA helps with almost $1200 of that, if not we'd be homeless.

You use personal feelings and fake data to describe the differences between China and US instead of statistics from international authority. You use downtown rent in China to compare with suburban rent in US, it's ridiculous.

If we consider life span of American and China, I can conclude that China food quality is not bad as you thought. Yes American live 3 years longer than chinese averagely. But if you consider POOR chinese class, they are not covered by any medical care. If we compare only middle class, I am sure chinese live longer than American.I guess 3 reasons for it. #1. American eat too much processed/canned food. Yes there are many engineers behind in American food industry. Unfortunately their goal is not for safer food, but money maker food. Chinese eat much more raw fresh food which is much better than processed. #2. Chinese eat much less meat than American. I am doing BBQ smoker and Pizza Oven for export. I know you American eat much more meat than I, say 1 to 10. #3. We walk much more than your American in daily life. We walk to subway, bus station, market, grocery daily.

I am more concerning scientists behind food industry. There are too many things added in food or to grow food crop or to feed animals. These additives are more harmful than population. You westerners eat too much processed food and in turn eat too much additive. I am in Beijing. Air population is worse in winter. Main reason is villagers burning coal/wood in winter. The pollution of coal is much less than additives in your food

I’m guessing that while living in Beijing, you have a good income and typically eat in quality restaurants. That makes a lot of difference.
In general I agree with the points made such as more fresh and plant-based food tends to be eaten in China than in the USA. Winston has mentioned these things and in this video, comments approvingly on how easy it is for people to go to market and buy fresh produce from vendors (who may be the farmers’ family members) in China on a daily basis. That would be more difficult in the USA because the majority of “Farmer’s Markets” are only open one or two days a week. On the other hand, the proportions of one’s diet have a lot to do with individual choice; I have been a vegetarian in the USA for over 50 years, and non-dairy for over 30 years, and I usually cook rather than eating out.
The focus of what Winston is saying regarding quality and food safety is from the perspective of someone who has been both poor and middle-income in China and has investigated the small eateries and vendors thoroughly. In other videos, he has commented that the cleanliness and food safety seems to be directly related to the cost of the restaurant, with a few exceptions. Inexpensive and more rural eateries often don’t wipe the table between customers (Winston’s friend “C-Milk” almost died because of this in northern China, after picking up a crumb that had fallen to the table and eating it, against his girlfriend’s protests. He contracted typhoid that evening.), and many use ingredients of questionable quality. Some even use recycled “gutter oil” which has been skimmed from the storm drains where used cooking oil is often dumped, then boiled and precipitated and re-used. Winston has recorded this being done. It is difficult for westerners to even comprehend anyone doing such a thing.
Both countries do have their issues, just different ones. I would never claim that there are no problems in restaurants in America, but when there is a known cleanliness or safety problem, health officials will force them to either fix it, or the place will be closed down. The problem will NOT be shrugged off.
Then there are the scandals of unscrupulous food producers in China who have sold plastic “rice” at least in other countries (Vietnam for one), and the use of melamine in milk to show a higher protein reading on electronic sensors. Some children died, and there is such mistrust of the Chinese dairy industry even now, years later, that people regularly go to Hong Kong where they can buy powdered milk from other countries easier and cheaper than in most of China, and bring back the maximum allowed so they or their friends can make up infant formula safely. There is a steady “grey market” in imported powdered milk of all things in China.
Winston has watched all this happen and commented on it.
He also noticed the fresh food available and the prevalence of walking most places in China. He did speak of these things on this very video as well as others.
Yes, in the USA, the FDA is corrupt as all hell and they allow a lot of chemical shit in our food and in medications because of industry pressure. Winston’s wry comments about our “engineered” food were probably not as approving as you may have perceived them. To him those foods were both tasty, AND overly processed and manufactured. So we’re hardly perfect, and he knows that. On the other hand, an unsanitary restaurant will probably be closed very quickly, and a company that put melamine in the milk that killed babies would not likely be tolerated for two years (that’s how long a competitor had been warning of the problem, with no results. Someone stabbed him to death BTW.) And... gutter oil... ?
Though I will say that those responsible for the melamine scandal were dealt with severely, more so than executives causing harm here. And that New York state had its “swill milk” disaster in the 1850s that killed thousands.
So when Winston speaks of food safety issues, the context is that he has been very, very specific about what he means, in this and other videos, and has spoken of the positive health aspects of China as well. He’s not just making some broad, arbitrary judgment, nor is he ignoring the good things about China.

@@王朝晖 Medical care is crap in US and super expensive, a lot of the people can't afford it. Then comparing the food in america and the food in china, both have good points, but one thing nullify all the good point for chinese food: the security. As Winston said, there is no regulation (or at least no one cares about it) in China and all this small stores selling you some 20rmb meal, you can be sure than if a foreign security check happens there, the great majority of them will be closed and the owner will go to jail. Just here in China no one cares about your health...
Also you forgot to mention than there is a big problem in china happening recently, obesity of children and young people. American fast food arrived, you mix that with some kid from only child policy generation (or even now) being spoiled as fuck and a lot of them are being actually super fat.
About your eating habits, you're right, chinese people eat some super good and healthy food, and they also walk much more too, chinese daily life is much more healthy than the american, just too bad the good food you're eating can't be trust at all and could be so easily poisoned :/

Yes, I am very grateful to be a proud citizen of USA and, yes, we are generous in many ways, not just the portion of food in restaurants. Yes, our American obesity is becoming a epidemic problem, that's our bad and the failure of our government to do something. As to rent, cities like New York City and Boston, for $10,000 RMB can only get a small studio apartment but can rent a whole big house in suburban area. So, it's all relative as to where we are. As for economy, Americans are slipping comparing to other industrialized countries while China is catching up. Having not lived in China and not been as adventurous, I am not taking it for granted for being an American. All Americans pay significant taxes for the infrastructures and we can still do better for the democracy but we are not. :-( And, yes, the diversity in America is the foundation of our generosity and, no doubt, of our democracy. But, we are slipping when we should be able to do better. Thank you so much for sharing. It's awesome!!!

We eat here every day, a farmer can be very unique meat hot pot. You said you lived in China for 10 years, and actually the most popular of Chinese food are confused, dog food you eat every day is it?

I have never lived in China or ever been there so by no means am i qualified to make comparisons in prices between two countries. But by same reasoning i wont go as far as saying ur not qualified to make them as well but having only been to few cities u wont get a broad perspective on prices in America. For example you mention having visited Las Vegas, and Phoenix Arizona. But keep in mind both of those cities are considered having a very low cost of living compared to other cities. For example i live in Seattle. I cant argue that Seattle is a first tier city like Chen Zhen, Tokyo, New York or Chicago, but its definitely a good size city with a population of 2 million and still growing rapidly. I counted 30 + cranes in down town today. So Seattle is comparable to say something like San Francisco, in fact its bigger in size, double in fact. But to give u an idea an average house starts at $650,00-$800,000 dollars. And if ur renting a two bedroom apt will cost u between $2500-$3000 dollars a month. But Seattle is considered an expensive city to live in cause we have all the large industries that drive America and the world. Seattle is home to Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, Star Bucks, and many others that i cant recall of the top of my head. Ok bro was just trying to give u a different perspective on prices in different type of cities in USA, and not call ur experience or perspective on prices here wrong, so hope didn't offend you. Ok bro cant promise but ill try my best to stay Awesome.

0:38 Yay, 16:9 again! (And presented 'moving curtain' like in the cinema.)
As for food quality, health-standards-wise, you like many others have to wake up to theory-vs-praxis, and how you can have food with lots of lax toxin levels applied, some substances not considered toxins, and often just people tricking the system, like in China. They're both very capitalist countries, so that will of course happen. Will happen anywhere where money has too much power over life.
And what's the point of sanitary kitchens everywhere if the food all around comes with a cocktail of pesticides considered below harmful levels, slowly accumulating in people and the environment, with the FDA having been bribed and lobbied and studies faked? - People also don't get fat just because food is cheap and you get big portions. It's also about what you mentioned, HOW the food is processed, what is in it. High-fructose corn syrup is considered a perfectly legal food ingredient there, but it might massively push sugar addiction and ruin your health long-term. (Frog in boiling water analogy. That which kills you slowly over many years is considered "safe". - That which you immediately react to might in some cases, ironically, even cleanse you.)
But overall you can see how a spiritually rotten root will grow all kinds of problems that all lead to the same outcome. If you have a good understanding of the nature of the root, then you won't have to lose yourself in details to be able to make accurate predictions of the future. - In this case, as long as the wealth gap is extreme and people are running in hamsterwheels, highly-stressed, and profit-maximization drives society, fiddling with symptoms will be a futile battle, easily compensated for and adapted to by the root. The root has influence over everything down the line, so it can handle anything except direct attacks. And I don't necessarily mean physically direct, but spiritually. Like breaking a power hierarchy of a fear-driven structure and not replacing it with another merely less fear-driven one. (Because it could always be corrupted again.) The biggest threat to that rotten system is people who cannot be bought out, cannot be bribed to subject. Those can get themselves into mortal danger.

For a lot of those in the comments, an unfathomable amount of ignorance is seen. Comparing culture on a micro-level is all fine and good, which is what he is doing, but do people really think China is a better place than America to live?
You can vote in the US. And speak your mind without being imprisoned. And the internet is not censored. And in the US, small school children are not being programmed to hate entire countries, like how Chinese children are taught in school to hate Japanese and American people. The US is also NOT currently imprisoning their Muslims for....reprogramming. (China's mass round up of its Uighur Muslims)
The US has unalienable rights, like freedom of speech, for its citizens. No change in politician or current trend can remove the guaranteed human rights provided by the constitution. It is crazy to me that there are still places, particularity countries as large as China, that do not have something as fundamental as guaranteed civil liberties. It's truly mind blowing, and very sad.
Chinese people have no such rights. People just "disappear " if they are controversial or hold opinions contrary to the government. Hell in just 1989, China slaughtered thousands of their own people who were peacefully protesting.
China has massive uncontrolled pollution, new buildings that are crumbling down, cities half empty, lethal drinking water in most of the country, very few public places have toilet paper & soap, etc.
It is sad but the Chinese people are largely slaves compared to people in the west. Kept insulated from much of the outside world through censorship and government oppression.
America is not perfect , but even suggesting that a developing place like China is anywhere near the quality of life of America, is just sheer lunacy.

10:50, the issue with this is that America, being so big with vastly different regions, has very different rent and property prices among said regions as well. If you were to live in the Midwest or South, your cost of living would be significantly cheaper than in major urban or greater city areas like in New York, LA, San Francisco, Washington DC, etc. Essentially, the North East and California/US Coasts will be way more expensive to live in than in the more central/landlocked portions of the country as well as the South. So I'd wager to say that the prices you saw in Arizona aren't really applicable to many of those coastal urban areas which have higher populations than in the noncoastal regions.

True but the wages are also much higher in the more expensive areas. A kid working at even McDonald's is 15 dollars an hour where I am.
