i’m a lifeguard and have lots of spinal training. they could have just looked at the replay to see the mechanism of injury, then realize that he has trouble walking and follow spinal protocol (collar, backboard immobilization). could’ve saved some damage down the road
This has happened to him 3 times before. He had Congenital Spinal Stenosis. Each time they followed precautions and he went off on a stretcher with c-spine precautions. He refused all precautions this time because he knew he would retire after this one and he wanted to walk off the court for the last time. He took a bit of a risk but you can understand the sentiment.

I could have declined the neck brace they put on me, but it's kinda protocol to do some things in treating someone...just to be the safest and limit additional injury.
