Does the Bible Address the Use of Hypnosis?

  • Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, talks with Ron who wants to know if Scripture addresses the use of hypnosis.
Hank indicates hypnosis a modern term coined by James Braid, an English doctor. He talked about the idea of suggestion. Those who preceded him were called mesmerists. They believed through an indwelling force called animal magnetism that they could cause their subjects to manifest uncontrollable laughter, jerking, so forth. Hypnotists, on the other hand, believed that the manifestations were not the results of a power within the hypnotists but the result of a heightened state of suggestibility. So, the subjected is then induced into a hypnotic trance. In principle, we never want to work ourselves into an altered state of consciousness, set aside our critical thinking, or exercise our will. This is a very dangerous state to be in.

Well scripture itself calls us fools doesnt mean it isnt TRUTH (YESHUA)
      1 Corinthians 4
*10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.*
      Or 1 Corinthians 15, 11-19
      ...
*14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
*15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.*
      ...
I dont like the term "christian" because it is a label this days, you cant trust it. We are deciples of YESHUA and not any church or construct, follow HIM directly.
This man did sadly give not one scripture that proves it is demonic, so i agree it is just an debate and you can trust it or not.

He should not have titled it what the Bible says about hypnosis and then not to add a single Bible quote. This is what misleads people someone using their personal opinion as the word of God. I think if you know the source of the hypnosis and it’s good, positive and something that world bring glory to God. Like quitting smoking, living better, being more loving then it’s good. But you probably should be aware of not opening yourself up to anything. Pray for God to lead you and protect you in your endeavor and you will be fine. That is my opinion just like his was completely his opinion-with no supportive scripture

    • @BibleAnswerMan

@bomberbrisket2778 This not just a personal opinion. Hypnosis has some real dangers and inducing altered states of consciousness is never a trifling matter. False memories can be passed on to those in a hypnotic state. See www.equip.org/articles/the-counterfeit-revival-part-four-/ and www.equip.org/articles/the-hard-facts-about-satanic-ritual-abuse/

  • @ceazreala101
    @ceazreala101 Год назад +1

I think the right word to describe an 'altered state of consciousness' is "trance" not 'hypnosis' as the English word 'trance' is translated from the Greek word ekstasis "trance" in the book of Acts chapter 10 verse 11, acts 11 verse 5, and acts 22 verse 17. HOWEVER, according to the Hebrew Bible, in the Old testament, the word 'taredemah' means "deep sleep" (a phrase often used to induce hypnosis), and it also means "trance" (refer to Strong's Hebrew concordance). Now, the English word hypnosis derive from the Greek hupnos meaning "sleep". So, the Greek word hupnos is similar to the Hebrew word taredmah "deep sleep (trance)" in that regard, but not similar to the greek word ekstasis "trance" as the Greek word doesn't imply sleep. According to my research, the Bible doesn't 'address' the use of "hypnosis", unless you define hypnosis as enchantment or whispering spells or divination. If that's the case, then, yeah, it does address hypnosis as being forbidden or 'evil'. Divination and whispering spells (words) is related to the hebrew word nakhash which have multiple definitions: "serpent (snake), divination, whisper, diligently observe, prognosticate etc". As far as hypnosis is concerned, you're told to speak in a whisper like manner... You're told that hypnosis is 'focused awareness' which is too "diligently observe". Also, hypnosis or trance (altered states of consciousness) can be induced by intense gazing... All of which are the characteristics of a snake (serpent). Realize that snakes dont blink... THEIR EYES ARE FOREVER OPENED. As a human, if your eyes aren't blinking then that means you're either in shock or the state of FASCINATION. Understand this: In hypnosis, you're taught to use your gaze(fascination) in order to help facilitate a hypnotic induction. In order to truly understand the function of hypnosis, you must understand the functions of a snake symbolically or metaphorically. Notice what happened to Eve in the Bible. As a result of listening to the charm of the diviner (the serpent), in Genesis 3:7 it says "then the eyes of both of them were OPENED..." This event is seen as a metaphor for gaining knowledge, AWARENESS, and consciousness. Snakes are also symbolic of transformation. The diviner, called nakash, the serpent whispered a divination to Eve and persuaded her with suggestions to become aware.

But neglected to point to the scriptures, especially in relation to paul saying he daily encouraged himself in the lord, (self hypnosis) and what about Bible meditation? On what grounds do you say hypnosis is dangerous. Case studies? peer reviewed studies ? Please. And some scriptures too.

@@BibleAnswerMan but what about just asking a simple question and getting a straight forward answer? Rather than applying a thesis that has the sole purpose of presenting your Christian world view onto others. ? It’s very disrespectful to any individual to answer the question you hoped you were asked in order to avoid answering the you were actually asked. This is a typical fundamental Christian apologetics way of deflecting, if you wish to persuade people to present your faith to them, then show them respect and answer the question instead of trying to play lawyer and side track them.

It was for me. I did not believe in Jesus until he came to me, I saw him, he took my hand. So it can't be a bad thing because I so f* believe in him now. You ask questions and you get answers. The Hypnotherapist doesn't suggest anything just guides and bring you in and out. It's a wonderful thing if you want healing from whatever you have physically and mentally.
