I am 45, no work done, no fillers, no botox and, frankly, impoverished--went on RSDI. I won't go into my story. Anyhow, I have severe insomnia and pain. Interestingly, my skin looks VERY different well rested, although I do find that claim a bit dubious for the majority of women.

Girl you could paste it on the screen over the whole video and people will still tell you it's not a spray lol..... it's kinda like how the teacher would always say don't open or flip the test over until I've read all the instructions, and there's always that one(or more) kid that just goes on and starts the test and thinks he's so smart bc he's going ahead and gonna be done first and then the directions are something completely opposite 😂

    Hi Jen,
Thank you so much for mentioning the xylitol being toxic to dogs. My dog ate sugar-free gum with xylitol while I was out of the house and almost died. Thank goodness my vet was able to save her.

I had to rush him to the emergency animal hospital where he stayed overnight for treatment and he still wasn’t out of the woods for several days. Now every time I see someone in the grocery store checkout buying gum I ask if they have a dog and know about xylitol toxicity, just to warn them because a lot of people don’t know.

Another FYI about xylitol- that's actually recommended by dentists and it's very good for people who are prone to cavities. My dentist recommended I buy toothpaste, gum, and candies with xylitol for that reason. (Be careful, though... Too much can give you the 'rrhea. Yuck.) Anyway, point being, the first thing my dentist told me was about the dog thing. He told me to make sure to keep it all very much out of reach of our dogs.

As someone currently in pharmacy school that is posed with the "do probiotics r e a l l y work??" I've always been told that probiotics have the most evidence and research when ingested and digested. However, like you said, preservatives in products actually end up inactivating the cultures over time. So the longer the product is on the shelf after being compounded and packaged, the more the cultures present are inactivated. In addition, the more cultures present in the product the better the probiotic is "supposed" to be. Like you said, efficacy is definitely up in the air when it comes to probiotics.... but since it is known that the active cultures diminish over time and how long primers can sit on a shelf before being completely used up (or even bought).... I dont see it being a beneficial addition to the TooFaced Hangover Primer. LOVE your videos geeking out over ingredients, because I'm just as interested and fascinated as you!

    • @ievadee
      @ievadee 4 года назад +16

Patrick hey! that’s a good explanation (i’m a formulator, also with a pharmaceutical background daughter of a microbiologist); however i’d like to add that most instances of probiotics are actually extracts or filtrates - essentially, dead bacteria cell smoothies or the byproducts of their metabolism. these work as chemical signalling substances that purportedly deter the growth of undesirable bacteria. since there are no live cultures, preservatives can be added without issue; live cultures, i.e, in Mother Dirt’s products, are actually the exception and raise a lot of issues with packaging and preservation (products need to be preservative-free, refrigerated and with a very short shelf life). this is, of course, still not researched in-depth beyond the cellular culture level, and more clinical studies on human skin need to be carried out to fully support the claims, but it’s certainly a fascinating area of cosmetic innovation and research.

I'm 51 and have learnt over the last year or so, it's the illusion of a poreless, smoothing primer that we love. I've used a lot of brands from Lancome to e.l.f and the 'smoothing' capabilities of them only last an hour so. From the time I apply them to the time I get to work, the pores and wrinkles are back. I've used different application methods from pressing to using a brush to a synthetic sponge, nothing is really effective for the long term. I've even tried a double application from Fenty to then pressing in a poreless one, lasts again only an or so. I've come to accept only some laser resurfacing or some sort of micro dermal abrasion will bring back any youthful looking skin...sigh. Also, let's face it, when I was young and wrinkle free, there was NO such thing as primer, not even 10 years ago. It really is a new thang for the already youthful.

OK, assuming I'm JUST trying to keep the color from caking up in the fine lines, not hide that I've got some, did any of the primers help the color even out? Or is the foundation still amplifying the lines? because i remember 90's makeup where my lids and under eyes were the only places I bothered to apply to help with shadows and dark circles....but now I'm getting a mess. When you're trying to mask a bit of violet and the color shifts right to the fine lines....OMG this amplifies the problem. The same issue is happening any time I can find a pale enough color correct for the under eye. Yellow or peach lines with purple high point contrast isn't helping.

My primer is my holy grail can't live without product. I just bought EIGHT back ups just in case they discontinue it. That is how much I need it. It is the product I longed for 30 years ago before primer was invested. Cover Fx Blurring primer makes my enlarged pores go away, and just tinted moisturizer on top gives me the best, almost flawless look, and lasts without breaking up or wearing off for 14+ hours. With good skin care, my skin looks better with that primer & ultra light coverage in my 40s than it did with foundation in my 20s. Can you tell how much I love this product?

This video is so necessary. Jen Luvs out there doing the work for us, once again. I used to have terrible problems with my skin eating my foundation. By lunch my makeup would be gone. I changed my skincare routine and added a ton more moisture and I don't have that problem anymore. The pore filling primers that work for me are the ones that are very whipped and creamy with some color tint in them as well. The NYX "dupe" for mineral veil, The Angel Veil or the Pixie green pore filling primer for example. Thanks to this video, I can look at the ingredients of my favorite primers to see how they stack up. Re: Vitamin C and E being together and the claim that there is no "preservative" in that Bare Minerals primer. I think Vitamin E is paired with C so often because it is a natural preservative. Vitamin E is super common in nuts because it helps the oils in nuts which go rancid quickly, stay good longer.

Adventures With Carissa this also happens to me. I always wear primer even if I’m going without foundation, or concealer. My routine is to use Elf Poreless Putty Primer on my T Zone, and some on my cheeks on any areas where I seem to have enlarged pores, then on the rest of my fact I use Bare Minerals Prime Time Original Primer. On the days I want/need some extra luminosity, I use NYX Bear With Me Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Radiant Perfecting Primer instead of the Bare Minerals Prime Time. Just be careful with the NYX, because when they say radiant luminosity, they mean super glowly!
Recently I found something that works almost as well as the ELF Poreless Putty. You can find it in a regular drugstore, as well as in the drugstore section inside Ulta. It’s called Catrice 1 Minute Face Perfector (comes in a small glass container similar shape as ELF Putty). Just FYI, it’s a “One Color Fits All Shade 010” and appears as a light brown/bronze with maybe a hint of red. I’m super fair & pale, so I had concerns that this would just be too dark. The jar says it will adapt to all skin tones and can be used as both a primer or foundation. So I decided to give it a try, and I was completely surprised when it did hide and blur my pores and the color looked great on my skin tone! I believe I have have discovered another product to help blur my pores and be able to get out of the house quickly without having to put on a bunch of foundation and concealer. Good Luck!

2~ I have huge pores over my entire face; forehead, cheeks, nose, upper lip and chin. Only place I don't have them is on my neck.
I always use a pore filling primer, but I like the idea of using a moisturizing one as well.
Which order should I apply them? My gut is telling me to pore fill, then use the moisturizing primer.
P S. I do have a good system of am and pm skincare that I follow, and let settle in at least 15-30 minutes before I begin applying my makeup.
    Thank you so much!!!

This video was like a masterclass in primers. So many of the videos I wasted my time watching before this one were too far in the direction of ‘Here is my face with various products applied’ for me to be able to glean any useful information.
Thank you thank you thank you for taking the time to perfectly format this information.

Hi Jen, I just wanted to say thank you! Such an incredible in-depth review of primers, I really found this interesting! As an “older” subscriber (53), I thought I’d add a few thoughts...I literally have tried 95% of all of these primers! I had to relearn how to do my makeup in the last few years, as my skin went from oily and fairly acne-prone, to much more dry (thank you menopause). My pores are large, I think due to massive overcleansing and scrubbing my skin when younger. Both the Tatcha and Tarte smoothing primers worked horribly and pilled massively on me. The Hourglass Mineral primer...I never understood the hype. But one that I don’t hear a lot about is the Hourglass No. 28. I haven’t broken down the ingredients, but it is working great for me. It “feels” like it will be oily, but it’s not, just helps the dry spots stay flat. It really helps keep my makeup last and yes, it feels nice and silky on the skin. Anyway...there are a couple on your list I think I’ll try. Thanks again for all your hard work!!

My skin is changing a lot at the moment due to ageing (I'm 38), being much more dehydrated and getting any base to not look terrible is a new challenge it's thrown me. I feel like the Elf primer is helping. And yes, my skincare is top notch!

Another great deep dive into a specific kind of product. You have no idea how much I appreciate these videos! I go back to them many times when I am wanting to try new things. I do find it strange that the Tatcha as well as the Elf primer does not fill my pores well, but the Revlon one does. I actually use the Pore Blur primer from Makeup Revolution and it works best to fill my pores. It has Titanium Dioxide & Iron Oxides which i don't think you mentioned at all. I think when it comes down to it, primers are just like skin care and mascara, they are very subjective to the person using them. I have to use primers. I have combo/oily skin and large pores. If I don't use primers, my makeup doesn't look as good or last as long and I get very oily. And trust me, there are days that I forget to put on primer and I can totally tell the difference.

Diane sullivan I watch a lot of Dr dray and she likes the ponds cold cream too (the fragrance free one). Genetics definitely takes a part in it but there’s a lot that can factor into that. For example, has she always used sunscreen? Sunglasses when she’s out in the sun? (squinting creates fine lines and wrinkles over time) Has she ever been a smoker? Stays hydrated? Always Being gentle with your skin (trying not to pull or tug) helps too. There’s a lot lol

I have redness all over due to my red hair and pale skin. I NEED to use a color correcting primer, one that the green pigment correctly melts with my skin and counteracts the redness. I have ageing skin so can be dry but I don’t want to look like a space alien! I found most correcting primers are too cakey or have green in it but as soon as you pat/rub it on the skin its gone and I’m just as red as ever. I finally found my savior and it melts into the skin and ACTUALLY does what it claims. It is NYX Color Correcting Primer Base in a squeezy-tube. The tube matches the tone its correcting. Its not the one in the pot. You can find it at Ulta or some makeup artist stores like Namies (at least here in California). This has glycerine, silicones and the ingredient you mentioned for making foundation last as well as silica. Its cheep and beets several of the ones you mentioned, trust me I’ve tried them & its fragrance free.🥰

I stopped using face primer last year because the foundations I use typically have the same benefits (pore-smoothing, long lasting on their own) and after testing side by side, there was really not a huge difference by the end of the day. It's definitely dependent on skin needs for sure. If anything, I may use color correcting primer if I have a lot of redness or a highlighting primer if I want a glowy look but I don't use it on the regularly.

I used to cake on foundation and powder before I started using primers that worked for me. I use a pore miniaturizer on my cheeks and a mattifying primer on my t-zone. Less foundation, barely use powder now

I think the tatcha saying stop clogged pores and breakouts by keeping the makeup out of pores by filling pores with primer

Omg you have been reading my mind!! If you look at my comment history you'll see I've been asking if its really needed. I've been experimenting with primers and seeing no difference. I'm hunting for a new foundation and so far everything has been a fail, this is when I decided if maybe its primers that are the issues. I just bought SugerGoop Unseen Sunscreen that apparently is an primer as well ( SPF 40)

I'm a primer lover for sure, and I make my own to use occasionally as well (it's a homemade version of All Nighter) but I do purchase and use mostly silicone based primers and I for sure at least 1 primer initially before makeup.. *AND* only after washing my face and you literally just said that in the video as I typed it haha great minds things alike 😅😁😊😀

@@eimajffoh Oh I followed a RUclips video from maybe a year ago that was someone who makes homemade versions of lots of things (I believe she's a chemist if memory serves me) anyways I'm sure you can search diy primer spray .. it's made with glycerine as a base and has like rose hip oil, and I want to say maybe a dozen ingredients. It was relatively cheap and I had most of the ingredients. I find it works well! I use it maybe half the time or I use it and then a secondary primary as I'm pushing 40 and have lots of scars and large pores and primers help blur all that so I can use a very small amount of foundation. Good luck to you all!!

The Tatcha claim is talking about keeping makeup out of the pores like a barrier, not the primer itself out of the pores.

Love this! So great that someone is out there interpreting all these ingredients and telling us what they are and what they do! :) Thanks! One thing that a primer may be able to help with is keep a foundation from oxidizing on the skin. I did some ingredient digging last night and most foundations include some kind of oxide. When this reacts with the sebum in our skin, it can cause our foundation to turn...orange. Think of cutting an apple and allowing the air to hit it - it turns brown. What do we do to keep it from oxidizing? Usually an acid, like lemon juice. So a primer (or some skin care ingredient) that includes some kind of antioxidant like citric acid can help prevent you foundation from oxidizing. My example: a pore minizing primer under foundation = oxidation. But a hydrating/moisturizing primer that includes antioxidants = no oxidation. Just thought I would share! I'm sure other factors can be at play with oxidation but I thought this made a lot of sense.
