I have a Pico 4 and I was surprised that it's being compared to the Quest Pro at all. Honestly, I was expecting a lot more for the Quest Pro for the price.
@@WaffleOpps You can make out what's written depending on the font size, contrast and distance to the screen. I wouldn't call it a great experience, but it's usable if you have to use it

I am still a meta user and will continue to use meta headsets but its amazing that a headset costing about 400 bucks has better colour passthrough than a 1500 buck headset. However the quest pro was meant to have a depth sensor and with that being taken out, maybe the colour passthrough doesnt work as well without it.
You're right, it is a complete screwup for the Quest Pro to have delivered the mixed reality passthrough that it did. For $1500 and their advertisement about it's capabilities, it was borderline illegal. It wasn't just the last-second removal of the depth sensor, but it was the lack of true high fidelity color passthrough. You see, most passthrough headsets will have two color passthrough cameras. However what the Quest Pro did, was to use two black and white cameras and then a colored one in the center to collect color information and then used software to try and fuse those together and overlay colors where they should be. The result was a heavily compromised passthrough experience. What's more, the software to correct distortion was extremely underdeveloped as well. Maybe the updates has fixed it since, but it shoudl not have shipped until they did.
@@saulghim2661 yeah but my theory is the colour overlay was designed to work on top of a depth sensor which when removed caused the passthrough to completely fall apart. I wish they were more realistic with the advertisement and its embarrasing that a cheap headset not even designed to be used for mixed reality has a better passthrough than a headset meant to be used to replace devices like your phone/computer. Im hoping they get this fixed on the Quest 3

What the depth sensor would do however, would make real-time mixed reality experiences much more accurate, robust and immersive. Like objects being occluded by objects, avatars detecting a couch or chair and sitting on it, little virtual pets hiding under tables or an application automatically detecting a table and launching it's content on top of it. Stuff like that. The VIsion Pro was lauded for it's passthrough because it didn't skimp on any components. It used 2 high quality cameras and did the necessary polish to correct visual aberrations before showing it off to people, much less selling it.

Honestly right now I feel that PICO 4 is way more legible and colors feel more vibrant during passthrough, there is also a new version of the OS for PICO which is suppose to help with the weird augmentation of images when my hands are close to the cameras, if this setup allows me to also capture depth then I think PICO 4 is a great device, but so far I love the MQP, there is something about it that just feels more premium and powerful (but also more expensive)

One is a passthrough which enables depth reconstruction to enable MR experience. The other one is like a simple passthrough in your camera. It's not as if we're comparing apples to apples.
Yeah I agree it looks a lot better and yes everything is compatible from your Oculus Quest library will work with the Quest Pro which is why this device is amazing !

As a musician I want to more involved in XR but not sure to purchase one of the items i'm seeing today or wait for say Apples commercial product which will attempt to do the same. I know each company is trying to make the headsets smaller and more appealing so i'd like to hear your opinion

I didn’t do anything special, I would say try to see if there are any device updates, also it could be that my recording looks cleaner than actual footage, I have seen that happen before.
Pico 4 is a lot clear just bc, it has colour pass through cameras rather than quest 2 which has black and white cameras! Quest pro colour pass through is not clear! I hope they implement colour cameras in quest 3!

Unfortunately the Pico pass through doesn't give the illusion of depth, as there is only 1 colour camera

Quest Pro reconstructs the world as a 3D mesh, which will provide tons of MR possibilities. Pico 4’s is just a like recorded video.

They look quite similar thru the lens via a 2D RUclips short. Does the stereoscopic depth on the Quest Pro make it much better? Which do you prefer?

Is not a fair comparison, but yes Quest 3 is a lot better since it has better and newer hardware.

Pico is more good looking, and less washed out in a way, but lets not forget that it lacks the 3d depth as it is only has 1 camera
