  • The modern aesthetic of the new Rolls-Royce Spectre is undeniable. However, Rolls-Royce places significant importance on preserving its historical heritage. Striking a delicate balance between making incremental style updates that may seem overly familiar is no easy task. Nevertheless, the Rolls-Royce Spectre achieves this feat with remarkable elegance and finesse.
    In this video, Anders Warming, the Director of Design at Rolls-Royce, provides insights into the design approach behind the creation of the Spectre.
    “When we design a Rolls Royce, one of the things that I always come back to as a designer and I love absolutely is the storytelling of a Rolls Royce,” Anders begins. “Everything you touch, everything you feel, has some sort of little angle and a background.” He brings up the starlight headliner - now a trademark of the brand - and how it does a wonderful job continuing the “storytelling” of the brand.

    Oddly enough, what I found most astonishing was something that looked so stately and large has a 0.25 drag coefficient. That’s remarkable.

    I think a designer by the name of Jan P Rosenthal played a major role in Spectre. I think it’s an absolutely superb piece of design. The team did a sensational job. It’s easily the most coherent and best looking piece of design in a modern RR. The only thing I would have liked to see was the charging flap hidden in a more innovative way instead of having a big opening flap down the side of the car. It ruins the lines and it seems like a nice detail to have moved it somewhere else. Overall though, imposing, stately, still has some excellent traditional hallmarks of the brand but moves the design language forwards. I absolutely love it. Thanks for sharing this interview, very insightful. It’s one of the best interviews I’ve seen with a head of design, plenty of times I’ve seen lots of designers talk pure waffle about cars but this was really well explained in clear logical terms. Thanks!

      Yes, I don't think Anders was taking credit for the design. But it's his job to explain it as the chief designer. That's why they come to these events to chat with media.

    Dammit, now I can't decide between the olivine/white sands combo, and the double silver combo. This is in addition to not being able to decide whether or not I want the starry doors. I'm sure they'd look gorgeous at night, but on the other hand the wood and leather combo doors look so much more luxurious in the day.
    No, I can't afford a Rolls-Royce. Not even close.

    The design of this thing is great but I just don't get EVs. Imagine spending 500k on this and then having to stop every few hours to charge it on a road trip and in many countries right now e.g. the UK charging away from home is a joke, many stations not working, long queues etc. I would think for someone in a car like this time really is money except in this case they will wasting a lot of that. One little prang and the car will be totalled thanks to the battery being part of the chassis. This government mandates on banning ICE car and forcing everyone into EVs just hasn't been thought through and is going to backfire big time. At least Toyota have the sense not to go down this route, they clearly see what others can't. EVs are not going to save the planet, they just aren't!

    • @bmwblog

      You need to think like rich people. Some of them even wanna install a fast charger at home. Charging won't be an issue for them. They will have people handling that

    • @joebloggs4191
      @joebloggs4191 Год назад +2

      @@bmwblog Charging at home isn’t the issue. Issue is what if you want to do a road trip ? For what this car is designed for in all manner except for the range. You won’t be able to do that in this without a lot of hassle. At best this car will do 200 to 250 miles on a charge so effectively becomes a very expensive toy for tooting around town. Read an article in the UK press daily telegraph which says that RR says it isn’t a problem as their customers will have a fleet of cars and have something suitable for long range, read between the lines means an ICE car. Sorry but EVs are just pointless and dumb.

    • @bmwblog
      @bmwblog  Год назад

      @@joebloggs4191 I definitely expect RR customers to have multiple cars. And I don't think they are buying the Spectre necessarily cause they love EVs. It's just a cool Car. And thats enough for many

      If I was going to drive a long way I would ensure that I had comfortable hotels along the route to eat well at, rest, and charge my car. I would not buy an electric car of any sort to then charge in the open air while also having to scrabble for vile food and have coffee thrown at me in a paper receptacle. This matters for me even without being rich.

    • @joebloggs4191
      @joebloggs4191 Год назад

      @@richardsmith579 Of course if you have that kind of cash you can stay in the best hotels eat the best food but still doesn't change the fact that you have to plan around the car's range and not according to where you want to / feel like stopping. Not to mention sometimes you might just get caught out in a location where there are no fancy hotels. Fact is in an ICE Rolls Royce you can go where you like without worrying about where to stop and charge and if there are two drivers you can drive pretty much non stop covering some great distances which you just won't be able to do in an EV RR!

    They've done such a great job of bringing RR into the future but staying true to the brand. Bemusing how BMW's designers can't do the same thing when they have so much history and pedigree. They shouldn't be throwing all of it away to try to appeal to China or whoever.

    • @rare6499
      @rare6499 Год назад

      I agree with you, 100%. Cars like the E46/E38 and many others were so handsome they’ve stood the test of time very well indeed. They were specifically ‘German’ in their design attributes. Now lots of their designs look almost Korean/Chinese. They’ve abandoned the principles that made them so successful. Their sales figures are still very high, so some people are still clearly fans. But I don’t think most of their modern designs are anywhere near as successful or honest as they used to be.
