The bed of chaos fight fight could have been very fun if instead of falling to your instant death, you'd fall down to a lower level where you'd have to make your way up while avoiding attacks to get back in the fight.
This is actually a really solid idea and I totally agree
Actually I think making it a actual boss would be better
@@ryanmattioli9790 also but, but i actually like some puzzle fights and I was thinking of a super basic and mimimal change that would've kept the concept of this particular boss fight.
I never thought of that but yeah that would be cool.
Puzzle fights are good, and from needs to utilize them more, I don't see how much faster and more OP you can make bosses than Elden Ring did.
Beyond being innovative and challenging Dark Souls is a FEELING.
💯
Being a 'PC peasant' I'd never heard of FromSoftware or any of the games they'd produced leading up to Dark Souls, not even Demon Souls. Completely ignorant. I just saw Dark Souls PTD Edition on the PC shelf of my local games store and instantly got the feeling that THIS was going to be right up my alley. I couldn't get home quick enough to try it... then I couldn't get back to the store quick enough to buy a damn controller! 😂 But I fell in love with it right from the start, it just felt so right.. "lightning in a bottle" indeed.
Only later did I learn about Demon's Soul, so bought a 2nd hand PS3 just to play that. All worth every penny.
In fact, I wish I could have those particular memories erased just to experience it all again fresh.
Yes… yes it is, still amazing
Half of it is
@aaroncarver5503 I'd argue most of the second half is good tbh. Lost Izalith gets a bad rep, isn't all that bad. It'd cool with architecture and enemies, though bed of chaos could've been changed gor better I'd there were maybe a few more months. Also goddamn legs.
Dukes was my fav. Great design, cool enemies, it's awesome.
Imo, ToG is by far the worst. Not that much enemy variety, pitch darkness, and nito is kinda underwhelming.
@@ZachAttack3710 I have very different opinions on the second half areas. They feel rushed and incomplete, you stop having these amazing connecting the world moments, you have straight up horrible bosses likes BOC and you end it with a lackluster final boss. I also really don't like dukes archives it's one of my least favorite areas in the game
@@Cbrunning849 I do agree with the second half being worse than the first and not being as connected. No matter what though, I still think it's one of the best games of all time
@@ZachAttack3710yuh if it wasn’t rushed tho it would b sm better. Still like the best game ever and clears the sequel in almost every way and the interconnected work clears ds3s linear one
I'm actually in the middle of yet another DS1 play through and I've got to say that this game really does have the best world design of any game I've ever played
Every time I replay this game, I always find myself looking around the world and seeing what other areas and places I can see from where I am and it never fails to blow my mind with how much thought was put into the world design
I just watched IllusoryWall's Dark Souls Dissected video on Lordran's layout and yes......this game really does have the best world design of any game ever made
Edit: Ok, that white dog biting Ceasar as a Sif boss battle had me dying 😂
I think world level design up to anor lando was the best of all time. But after it does go from exceptional to just very good.
You need to play more games if you think DS1 has the best world design of any game 😂
@@samuelgeaney7556name one that has better then
I think one of the best examples of this is in the Catacombs where you fight Paladin Leeroy (near the golden fog gate on your way to Nito) you can see Ash lake, which lays under Blighttown of course. Just cool how you can literally see it
@samuelgeaney7556 I would bet that I've played more games than you. Ds1 is a masterpiece and lordran might be the best video game world ever made.
Play this game every year, multiple times sometimes, it will always be my favorite game of all time.
Same. I play through DS1 every year, it's like eating comfort food.
Every time I'm at a low point in life I fire up ds1. It came out when I was twelve and it comes with a nostalgia punch on top of what it is on its own
Same. More than 1k hours and currently playing it again. Managed to die for a mimic 😎
It has the best run backs, the bed of chaos is shite but still top 10 all time game
When this game came out, all my friends played it and I gave it a try but couldn't get into it because I didn't have the patience. Fast forward 12 years later, I finally beat it for the first time.
Awesome, you planning to do other souls games next?
@that_canuck_god5873 yeah, I'm playing DS3 rn and on Aldrich.
@@kennywilson5422 Dope, good luck!
@that_canuck_god5873 I can never beat the Dancer so that's where I'll need luck lol.
I played dark souls one years ago and did not like it. Then I picked up blood born about a month ago and been like a crack addict with bloodborne and Elden ring. Since then, I've picked up the whole dark soul of trilogy. Obviously I'm going to start with dark soul's one. I hope the graphics and mechanics aren't too outdated.
Dark Souls 1 isn't clunky, it has weight. The attacks have weight, your armor actually means something thanks to poise, and poise expands your playstyle options beyond "Mash dodge and R1"
Dark Souls 1 is clunky as shit 😂 Definitely has the best feeling of weight in the series but you can't say it isn't janky and clunky.
@@samuelgeaney7556 Nope! "best feeling of weight" is what most dumbass impatient normies call clunky. People start crying when they can't animation cancel everything. I'd hate to see what they'd say about Monster Hunter.
@@samuelgeaney7556go play Fortnite and stop pretending you know anything
@@samuelgeaney7556def a fortnite + cod player
@@riioas5543 I play neither of those games. I've played every souls game and got the platinum trophy for the whole series, I've spent my fare share of time with all the games.
The armor weights and resistances mesh very well. You can mix and match the builds better than on the other 2 games. The balance on this aspect was very well done.
I actually appreciate and like that Das1 bosses are more experimental and want to toss something more than just a knight dude with a 50 swipe combo attack in a large open area.
Bed of Chaos sucks because from soft was trying something else. But half the bosses of DaS 2 suck because Fromsoft kept trying to do the same.
It's crazy to think how much they did with the budget they had. I truly believe they made the best possible game for the amount invested. Pure genius. The GDC talk comparing Dark Souls to IKEA had some really cool info in it.

I still remember that first time I kicked the ladder down in the undead burg. I knew then I was gonna love this game. Still do.
i bought the game like a decade ago, i was mainly an rpg player so i could not get used to it for the life of me. i let it collect dust for like 5 years then randomly picked it up one day and that first playthrough was one of the best experiences in gaming ive ever had. just as amazing as the first time i ever played an rpg i thought id never feel that again. everything just clicked and while i died a shit ton i kept playing and got really fkng good if i do say so myself. the music is probably my favorite part aside from the gameplay and lore.
\o/
Me too, 1 year installed on the PC without touching it until I had no other game to play, it was one of the best singleplayer experiences of my life.
PS: the remake sucks
Man, the clunkiness of any older game is part of the charm far as I'm concerned.
There are 3 reasons why Dark Souls 1 is my favorite DS out of the 3:
1- The world: dark, creepy and even scary in many moments made me love the game and made me want to explore more and more; I think a lot of that have been lost in the other 2 games, specially the second one
2- The solitude: the first time I played Dark Souls, I did it almost 95% alone on my XBox 360; without being able to co-op
3- The difficulty and the reward of overcoming areas that was way over my league the first time I reached them
A Masterpiece remains a Masterpiece...it's timeless
I really wanted to like this game as most of my friends played it when it came out but it was just too frustrating to me for me to enjoy it. I think I made it to the place with all the scaffolding and stuff and it was like a maze and even with a guide I was hopelessly lost and having to run back to your corpse with enemies everywhere was just a pain. Was far to brutal of a game and I've never really liked to play on anything above normal mode personally. I will admit that the game was well designed but it's not for everyone whatsoever.
I'm playing through it again now and I'm trying to get into the castle at Anor Londo. The silence is used so well because when you finally hear something other than your footsteps it's always terrifying.
And I think Gwyn is supposed to be an underwhelming fight because you're meeting him in his eakest form. This is a gwen who has just given up everything to make his age of fire last a little bit longer, His family and ann orlando keeping an illusion of the sun. What little power he had left split between him and his knights. Gwen was supposed to be weak because if we met him when he first started, we would have got annihilated
He still kicked my arse multiple times though first time I ever played it.... I had to keep hiding behind that central rock formation. 😂
DS1 is my favorite souls game because it feels like I'm the one on the adventure. Later games feel too polished and they lose the grittier feel that a real adventure would have. An example being that large enemies in later games move too gracefully for something of their size.
Well said!👊
Bloodborne enemies don’t move gracefully
Later games feel too polished? That isn't a flaw. Dark Souls 1 feels like shit to play, the polish was needed 🤣
@@samuelgeaney7556 You'll understand once you grow up, kid. But then again, you probably won't.
@@sunnyjim1355 You resort to calling me a kid when I'm most likely much older than you.
I'm currently playing Sekiro for the first time, hope it is on your radar for retrospectives 🙏
Sekiro is the masterpiece, Bloodborne was so close though
I have beaten dark souls 1 many times. Many different builds and killed every boss with all the different ways of playing the game, except one.
To this day I still have yet to ever beat the Taurus demon on my own accord. It has ALWAYS jumped backwards off the bridge to its death each time. I thought it was just a one off thing on my first play though. Idk what it is, or if it’s just where I stand when fighting him on the bridge but it’s hilarious
Subsequently, despite playing this game for 11 years, I haven’t gotten it to jump off even once.
@@CuriosityMisledMe I don’t use the plunging attack so I just run circles around him in the middle of the bridge where the side wall is broken and he’ll just eventually back step to do an overhead attack and the back step sends him off the map
I had NEVER had him do that on any of my playthroughs. I read about it and was thoroughly confused. Made a new character for a fresh playthrough, and I'm getting ready to do the plunge attack thing as soon as he spawns, and sure enough, he just leaps off the wall before I get to the ladder. It's happened every time since. Funny enough I was a bit bitter on that run because I had had to restart after HAVEL decided to walk off the edge into oblivion.
20 years ago, if you'd asked me to name my top videogame, I would have struggled. I'd have said there are just too many genres, too many generations and too many greats. But I never have to even pause for a second these days - it is, and always will be Dark Souls. I loved Demon's Souls for its novelty and eccentricity and I loved Bloodborne for absolutely everything it was. I've also massively enjoyed DS2, DS3, Sekiro and Elden Ring for so, so many different reasons. But, there is only one absolute masterpiece for me, one greatest game to rule them all, and it simply has to be Dark Souls.
Dark souls is the only game making me wake up. At 4 am excited with my coffee for the next area/boss/encounter. It’s truly an experience I’ll never have and I’ve lost count how many times I replayed this game
Thats me everyday since i started, im on the Artorias dlc now then Gwyn and i dont want it to end.
@@theintroverse1905 Yeah. I restarted it again myself just recent... just have to kill Kalameet now, then Gwyn is literally going to bite the dust. Difference this time is that I'm going to try to finish NG+7... furthest I've ever got before is NG+3
Honestly i really like the slower combat I think it caused every moment to feel extremely deliberate, it also allowed blocking, parrying, and dodging to all feel very balanced. Plus i think it really caused bloodborne to stand apart but now every fromsoft game is just dodge spam with more and more I frames every game
Yeah I agree 100%. The combat in From’s games were always unqiue and varied up until DS3 (which is kinda justifiable considering it’s the third game in a series), except for Sekiro which had a unqiue combat system. Sure DeS and DS1 were "kinda" similar, but there were enough differences, besides they both have "souls" in their names. Bloodborne was a new IP and it had it’s very own unique take on combat, same with Sekiro. However it blows my mind how much they ruined (strong word but hear me out) Elden Ring’s combat. It was yet another new IP like Bloodborne and Sekiro, however in contrary to those two, they treated Elden Ring like DS4, with the same combat, only adding a few extra additions nothing more noteworthy than the differences made for each Dark Souls game in terms of combat.
So yeah, it kinda started in DS3, but Elden Ring took it to another level with annoying fights and bosses that doesn’t fit the speed of the combat at all, or the combat in general really.
@@questionablezoomer764 but they realised rolling every problem in DS 3 was to easy so they made a alot of Bosses have way to long hit combos and very akward delayed attacks in ER.
@@skeley6776 They used to not aim for making hard games, and I’m not interested in these games solely for their difficulty. In ER they did them harder while also making them worse, because it feels like From bought into the idea that these games are good because they’re hard, while in reality they’re not good because of that.
@@questionablezoomer764 Funny that you say that, I started an ER run recently where I just play like DS1. Armor, shielding a lot, actually fat rolling most of the time... and guess what, it's not too tough. Bosses "fit the speed of combat" just fine. Rolling just isn't always your best option. Shield or just sprint away when something starts wombo combo-ing you.
I couldn't agree more.
Still the best game I'm the series. Might be my favorite game ever.
Man really made a video and said “the parts that made it hard are what makes the game hard, and the parts that make it easy are good”
Nice video. Rolls are omnidirectional, just not while locked on. Not locking on is a good strat for a lot of bosses because of this.
Dark Souls taught me that you can persevere. Saved my life during my depression.
33:04 Yes, Pinwheel being easy is the point. In the lore, a father stole the Rite of Kindling from the Gravelord to try and revive his wife and child using necromancy. He succeeded, but they were all three bound into one being. Now, Pinwheel tries to separate himself back into three beings with various forms of necromancy and magic, which is why you find so many books and skeletons in his lair. He appears powerful because he wields the power of the Gravelord, but in reality he's just an ordinary being; his power is stolen, wielded irresponsibly, and not to its full potential.
Yes. It will never be replaced.
Just my humble opinion (awesome video by the way!), the way I look at the "committing to one class/weapon" idea: sure, it could be a detriment to not be able to respec, BUT, keeping the theme of your video: when you start a new game as a new class and new weapon choice, once you get your patterns and routes down, it really only takes less than 10 hours to build up a new experiment character and make decent progress without grinding. This is what I've been doing lately, start up new game, run straight through Taurus Demon (I managed to do it in an hour, not bragging lol just sharing) and getting to where I can face the gargoyles, then at that point I've set myself up to be able to explore with a new class/weapon/playstyle in less than 10 hours. Now with the new char/weapon/class, at this point I can take on gargoyles, easily travel to pinwheel, sneak over and take on the moonlight butterfly, and full access to blighttown, lower burg, depths, all of darkroot, valley of drakes, etc. Long story short DS1 has a 5-15 hour respec, depending on skill. Which I think adds to its overall theme you proposed: "the game dusts you off and says try again!" But in this case, we hit reset and dust OURSELVES off, following the game's teaching. AND you get to keep both characters and progress instead of trading old for new. Also, if you figure out something for your old character you could load up THAT save and try it and see what happens, which is literally how we git gud lol
When dark souls 1 first came out my friends asked me if I planned on getting it and I said nah, game looks too hard for me. About a month before 2 came out 1 had a promotion of being free for 1 week and that is when I picked it up because the same friend said hey its free right now can ya play it with me? I now have played dark souls 1, 2, 3, bloodborne, sekrio and elden ring with elden ring being my least played at 247 hours. Bloodborne is now my all time fav game.
Dark Souls is art in an industry full of products.
Im glad this game exists. As now even From software is letting "clients" decides what's in the game... They keep polishing combat and accommodating to players. They became sort of rhytm games now... Dark souls was real time strategy combat. Mature exploration, godlike level design, though inducing lore and a different challenge in every level. From darkness, to lava, to traversal,, combat and even platforming. This is an experience.
It's sad that it is now compared as a game with other fromsoft games. As it loses to almost everyone as a product. But as a piece of art it just demolish every other game in existence imo
when it comes to gwyn i would have to majorly disagree because lore wise and the whole point of going hollow is the feeling of being empty which gwyn has achieved through sacrificing himself to keep the flame alive. so the whole point of the fight is to fight a defeated/hollow king instead of him in his prime.
What ds3 was missing was having to run back through the connected world and it feeling like an actual adventure. Getting fast travel halfway through was amazing.
Also when the game came out the combat wasn’t that bad, but if you play ds3 first it’ll obviously feel bad
Yeah. But you know... you don't have to use the fast travel if you don't want to... you could totally just play it as if it didn't exist.
Dark Souls was my first FromSoft game and it's slower combat just felt spot on to me (still does), so much so that my first time playing DS3 I couldn't even be bothered to finish the intro area... it just felt so 'wishy-washy', I hated it. I've since come to appreciate it... but DS1 is still a superior game over all imo.
I dont agree, i think dark souls combat holds up very well
Started it a week ago for the first time on my switch and haven't put it down. Great game.
I stop watching Chop for a few months and all of a sudden I see he’s making souls vids, nice
Prob one of the most memorable playthroughs of a game I’ve ever experienced
Nice video man. Just found your channel. I'm a fromsoft noob. Started with elden ring then I played sekiro and now I'm playing ds1. The combat is a lot slower then elden ring but the foundation is there. I actually like how there is more emphasis on using your shield. It took a bit to get used to coming from elden ring but I really do enjoy the combat.
I usually separate the games into two types of 3rd person combat.
Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 fall under the “Methodical” style where each input matters a lot more.
Bloodborne, Sekiro, Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring fall under the “Reactionary” style where everything moves faster, including you.
@@CuriosityMisledMe I can understand that. Though ds1 definitely feels slower and methodical the foundation of elden rings combat is definitely in ds1. I would agree with that. But I'd honestly put sekiro in it's own category while reactionary still describes it well, it's combat system is just so different from all the fromsoft games at least the ones I've played.
Every years.. every videos with title :" Why DS1 still a masterpiece" released.
You know a game is good when the replay value lasts over 10 years and you'd still rather play that than other short lived new games.
Imo dark souls 1 is more replayable then elden ring im not running around for eternity with a co op, so one play through is enough when in ds i can do mulptiple and not get bored, its weird..sometimes.
Getting to the boss without using an estus flask is part of the challenge
I think it's ok that the dlc feels separated from the rest of the world's design. After all you go back in time
The rafters in anor londo + nintendo stick drift made a section i had completely mastered become by far the most difficult part of that playthrough.
This game will always be my favorite. I went into it completely blind, knew nothing about it. Just that it was very difficult. I wanted to challenge myself. But the game turned out to be an incredible experience with pretty much everything I could want in a game
i finished the game again after 4 yr,damn, still an masterpiece
0:32 "...when you beat a boss that was holding you down.", shows the post-Pinwheel reward
It’s a timeless classic that created a sub genre of gaming along with demon souls
Why do people even bother saying that a game is flawed? Obviously all games are flawed.
some more than others
Sway from the top of the ledge. Swim in the bottomless lake
Ds1 has no omni directional rolling, you can brick your save by one-shotting Priscilla, and the inventory ui is worse than cancer.
Ds2 has agility, there is no dedicated invasion item (only cracked red eye orbs,) and cooping is a nightmare due to soul memory.
Ds3 has by far the most hackers/cheaters it's actually terrifying, bosses need to be alive just to be able to do invasions, and in addition to the last point the game is way more linear in comparison to past games so keeping bosses alive for invasions is way more tedious.
This is a video game critique. Discussing the flaws is the whole point. 🤡
Moonlight butterfly until recently I didn't know you could even melee it. I always equiped my bow and I thought it was landing because i staggered it hahaha.
On my first playthrough of DS I was mostly aware of the game being challenging and have seen a solid chunk of footage from its prequels which I have not played at that moment. I made a little pact with myself to push as long as I can without seeking any external help or reading guides. I made relatively far before my first peek into helpful tips and then there was no turning back - I realized how much I missed along the way despite being curious and taking things slow. Honestly, even though I'm more mature now I'd still not figure out most of the hidden stuff despite multiple runs and experimenting with various builds. I assume one must be obsessed with this game to collect majority of the knowledge or witness it second handed through endless hours of recorded footage.
I wonder how people who started from Elden Ring feel if their next pick happens to be vanilla Dark Souls 😌
Something I love about dark souls that I dont see a lot of people talk about is the magic system. The spells themselves are more underwhelming than other soulsborne games, but each spell having it's own cast count instead of the player having a universal mp bar felt like such a breath of fresh air
It's just D&D's spell-slot casting, which has been around for half a century now.
"Darkness" music from Persona 3 was playing often in the background, in case I was not the only one trying to remember the name of this excellent track.
Waiting for Sekiro 😎
10:39 whoa whoa whoa, when did the hydra ever fly across the shore??
You mentioned the Capra demon has an insane runback. Did you not get the shortcut back to undead burg that's directly to the right of the boss fog? Took me 3 play throughs to find it, but def made runbacks on that boss much more manageable.
It's still a bit of a run, but far easier for sure.
Capra demon was probably the most insane difficult boss ive fought
Chopper never misses with these reviews🔥
"The feeling of beating a boss that's been holding you down" While background is Pinwheel's arena. Nice meme!
i’m finally playing DSR for the first time and the world building and level layout is immaculate. I know it’s older and I am working through that but the slower rolling and super delay when healing does grind my gears.
my first exposure was Bloodborne and i’ve played every FromSoft that came after including a bunch of various soulslikes so I want to love this game. Maybe i just need to progress more and it’ll click with me
Yeah, the first Dark Souls is a much slower, more chill, more RPG-focused kinda game. Almost turn-based. What's funny is people praised it for that at the time (I still like it and think it's the last "classic" FromSoft game), but then DS2 leaned into all that stuff and people realized they were praising the game for stuff they actually just found annoying.
After that Myizaki felt it less necessary to emulate the attitude of older games (like their own Kings' Field series) and started doing what he personally preferred, which he'd already made obvious with AC4 / 4Answer. More of just a character action game.
Okay I want to play Tony Hawk Souls
29:44 It gets even more sad with the dlc - if you do it first and free Sif in the past (whether you summon her for the Manus fight doesn't matter), then going into the Sif fight will trigger a different cutscene where she recognizes you but then reluctantly fights you
29:36 holy fuck Cesar Milian didn't took any shit from that Labrador, he straight up kicked him, fucking savage
I don't agree that ds1 had outdated combat. It was (intentionally) slow and clunky and very deliberate both you and the enemy. Every attack hit hard but was much easier to understand and register. and you really had to pay attention to your stamina more than later games as each action was much more stamina draining. Healing while being still made healing harder and much more of a easy thing to do. Later games feature longer and longer attack combos where some move come out too fast, or are very complicated to dodge (waterfowl dance) or have very long attack chains. But I always appreciate ds1 and it's more simple combat system. I like the new stuff don't get me wrong but I watch people complain about Elden rings boss design and think maybe going back to basics is a good thing.
I like to think of it as a combat game meets a strategy game. Instead of thinking about it being just slow combat, consider it a very fast strategy game in a way.
People use the term "outdated" incorrectly. FromSoft _was_ deliberately trying to emulate the style of older games, particularly their own, but it's not like it wasn't technically possible to make a way faster, ""smoother"" game. That's just what they chose to make. Cultural difference. People are so damn impatient now.
"...you really had to pay attention to your stamina more...". In a nutshell.
I wouldn't call it outdated either. It's simpler, sure, but there was that deliberate feeling with each strike. DS1 isn't for me on the combat side, but I do like that stamina management was more important. I wouldn't mind that aspect, at least, coming back.
Is the Mona Lisa still a masterpiece?
Just because something is old doesn't mean it isn't a masterpiece
Beaten this game more than 20 times and a Soulsborne vet it's still a masterpiece and also have all versions from the playstation to xbox and Switch :)
dude i want to play that solaire skating game it looks so sick
I have now played all 3 dark souls and elden ring and the one thing that DS1 left me that none of the others did was thatbsense of hopelessness and dread in the world
Extremely excited for the inevitable video about how Demon's Souls (2009) is still a masterpiece
I have played this game probably 5 times through, doing different builds, and I gotta say, it's my personal favorite FromSoft, though i fight with Bloodborne. The world felt so comforting while haunting, and the everything before the Lordvessel is legit one of the best gaming experiences ever. after DS3, I returned to the first cause I got the formula, and I the game hit at the right time in my life. I think the ending too is so wonderfully dismal, and the music is so fucking gorgeous omg
Trying to find a physical copy of this game is like trying to find a needle amongst sand
Played DS3 after this and it was so disappointing compared to DS1 and Bloodborne. Elden Ring was kinda disappointing too although I didn't finish it. Hope they make a game as great some day.
All of their games are top tier
You'll be waiting in vain. They'd have to downgrade their games to make something akin to ds1.
In the first half of DS 1, homeward bones were a lifesaver. And yes, I ate the firelink shrine keeper first play through hah.
Pinwheel is presumably easy to facilitate the player killing him early, even before either bell of awakening.
about pinwheel:
if you check the npc quest lines, and follow rhea, you need to go down in the catacombs right after capra demon, making that boss fight less baby easy, specially because you have to go more down to actually rescue rhea, if you pay attention to the enemies in the area you'll notice that with exception of the bone wheels, those skeletons does not have a lot of health and you can 2 or 3 shot them with most of the builds at this point
oh OH and bed of chaos is nothing experimental, its just Dragon God from Demon's Souls, but made a lot worse, they already had the gimmick ready, it was just made poorly
Bed of Chaos feels more like a Castlevania boss than a Dark Souls one. No matter how it swings at you, it'll always gravitate towards a hole, physics be damned. Slapped on your entire frontal body? Ya get knocked forwards into a hole and lose 3 minutes for a salty runback
Everybody tells you about the Punishing Difficulty, the iffy bosses or the iffy areas in the second half. But it’s not until you play the game that you discover the dark and depressing but strangely comfortable world, the heartbreaking lore, the haunting Soundtrack, the comforting and tragic characters, alive or dead.
Unfortunately, despite what many people who have played the game say, the garbage news articles that screech the same trash that this game that’s slightly difficult is the ‘dark souls’ of its genre. Or how these games need an easy mode. All that garbage.
I’m so glad that I never listened to these often spewed “reviews” that these game journalists who can’t get past the asylum spit out. I’m also glad Elden Ring was such a monumental success that people are returning to these masterpieces and seeing just how special these games truly are.
Sorry, I just get passionate with these games, they just mean so much to me lol.
By the way, great review. But I do disagree a little bit, particularly considering the idea that some certain areas need music. The music is supposed to highlight very important locations or characters in the background story. Most of the bosses are important figures and/or overwhelming presences compared to you that they demand music, and areas only include music to highlight important info on the world. It’s not by accident that Ash Lake is one of the only areas in the game with an ost because of how important both Ash Lake or the one who inhabits it are. However the majority of the areas don’t have music to show how lifeless these grand areas are. New Londo is drowned. Lost Izalith is corrupted. Dukes Archives is tainted by the horrifying things committed there. Tomb of the Giants is pure darkness. Anor Londo is grand but in truth empty. The Painted World is basically just a lifeless orphanage. Sens Fortress is pain and you don’t get music with pain. Blightown is deadly and dark. The Depths is disgusting and filled with death. Darkroot Garden is in ruins. Undead Burg is filled with corpses. And the Kiln of the First Flame is nothing but ash. It’s no mistake that Ash Lake, Firelink Shrine and others like them are filled with music, because unlike the others I mentioned, these are the only places in the world with any sort of life.
Lastly, just one comment on Gwyn. Not sure if your into the lore much but I’ll just explain just incase lol. Basically Gwyn is underwhelming on purpose. In the lore Gwyn was the greatest of those who held lord souls but, he was terrified of the age of fire ending, and after trying to rekindle it artificially and failing, he gave himself up to the first flame like the Chosen Undead can, and became a hallow. Gwyn is in no way innocent but he is an incredibly tragic character which is why he’s so weak, and why his ost is so sad sounding. But more so, Gwyn’s boss fight is more meant to convey Dark Souls’s themes. You came all this way and fought through everything to just find a lifeless husk holding on to the minuscule light left in the world. It’s an incredibly somber fight that conveys not only the themes but the tone of Dark Souls.
Wow I really just typed this much for no reason lol.
The polish came later for sure, but god damn, it is impossible to deny the strong core they kept building upon.
I've always had plenty of upgrade materials, but I don't mind farming.
My problem is the hype and excitement the first half of the game makes them completely plummets when you realize that there is barley anymore map to explore and that you've basically explored everything.
I know I'm super late to your video but could you please tell me how can I get that upscaled dark souls remastered cover picture you have as your thumbnail? I think it looks really rad
The 4 direction roll is only when youre locked on, its moni directional otherwise
This right here. I freaking love DS1 but you're doing yourself a disservice by playing the game locked on. I think it's a much more enjoyable and easier experience playing locked off, aside from a few situations.
@@ForeheadForesight + if ur gonna play DS 2 u have to learn how to play without lock on anyways
Dark Souls 1 is one of the five best game ever created, together with Baldurs Gate 2, Commandos Behind Enemy Lines, Disciples 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic 3. There was a loot of great game in history but only this 5 game we can name "Perfect"
I’ve played through the game on every starting class and platinumed it twice. I LOVE dark souls.
Started another run just yesterday. She gon keep me coming back like Link To The Past does. Forever.
I must be the only person that doesnt like Elden Ring being open world, which is why I like Dark souls more
Nope Open World that has nothing in it 25 - 50% of the time and u simply run/ride for half a decade is simply worse than actuall level design.
You know I really enjoyed the PvP. One of the benefits of Dark Souls PvP is that you're more likely to encounter actual players who are just making their way through the game. It's definitely not as polished as something like DS3's PvP, but can really offer a lot of fun.
right after i watch the bloodborne review🤞🏽
With regard to runback time, Dark Souls 1 in many ways takes a lot of its design philosophy from Demon's Souls. The bosses are simple, and the greater challenge in many cases are the levels. From Software really started to change their techniques starting with Bloodborne, and you can see this influence in the DS1 DLC; the bosses are significantly more complex and challenging than almost any from the main game, the runbacks are mostly simplified or minimized. Contrast this to a Demon's Souls boss, which might have all of 3-4 moves, and the primary challenge is getting through the level itself.
So basically, this guy really doesn't like DS 1 very much.
I’m about halfway through this game right now, I’m absolutely loving it! Been going on a fromsoft game marathon since I beat Elden Ring, I’ve just fallen in love with these games.
I love it and still play probably once a year! It was the first FROMSOFT I ever played.
I disagree. I think reusing bosses as, "normal" enemies later, showcases and shows the player just how much they've grown.
Elden ring does the same thing with some of its bosses
I remembered it when I first watched your videos a few years ago, when PUBG was at its highest peak of popularity, and you were my go to RUclipsr for PUBG content. But things change y'know. I quit playing PUBG when you did, then I never watched your content eversince until recently!
This is just a big curve ball to being completely honest, I never ever thought of you talking about Dark Souls at all. But it's a crazy surprise, I tell you that.
It'll be amazing if you make RUclips videos of the dark souls trilogy and even Sekiro, Bloodborne and even Elden Ring! I mean, their pretty popular to be honest, it'd be awesome to see you make a video about them!
Glad to see you make your way back to the channel! I’ve made videos on BB & Elden Ring & DS3 so far :)
I'm so glad I bought this game again for Switch. I just wish they'd port 2 and 3...I would absolutely buy them both again!
6:17 Asylum Demon is literally the only boss that you fight more than once (as a boss of course) lol
never played this but after playing demon souls remastered i think its time. i know demons souls remaster is way more polished but thats ok i can handle the jank if the vibe is the same. and wow the vibe of demons souls was so good
I played DS1 after elden ring, ds3 and sekiro and I absolutely loved it. Probably my favorite out of all of them outside of ER. Sekiro has a special place in my heart too.
Yes it's a masterpiece. No matter how I go about beating the game I always love it
This game aesthetic, lore, world, decay, depressing setting. Still amazing
So glad i started late. I know i have long and painful yet fun road ahead of me.
Manus was my hardest fight in the whole of all the souls games I played besides vanilla Melania when I was trying to beat her without bloodhound step and rivers
