This guy is a legend. He introduced so many people to carbon fiber skinning. I got introduced when he did his carbon fiber steering wheel a few years ago. As a first timer, I was able make my own carbon fiber steering wheel after watching his video. TRUE LEGEND.
Great video. I'm just an amateur at carbon fiber skinning so take this with a grain of salt, but I've found that scotch brite pads can work after the first resin lay if there's concern that sandpaper will wear past the resin layer into the carbon fiber.
Do you know why BMW owners don't say hello at lunch? Because they saw each other in the morning at a car service =))). Awesome job. The vacuum food machine idea is great!
use of the vacuum bag is a good idea but spray adhesive gets eaten by the epoxy by using that instead of the normal epoxy layer for adhesion wont this result in delamination fairly fast? also have you considering using filleting wax on the bottom edges to prevent the epoxy/carbon from sticking underneath keeping the back undamaged
Peel ply and a Breathing Cloth would assist if you were looking to save / reuse the vacuum bag. Peel ply will still leave a textured finish and need sanding. Will also help avoid the bag getting stuck in the resin itself (AKA less sanding!). I'd also look into a heat gun / torch as well, if you watch others who lay Carbon Fibre down, it assists with degassing (Removing bubbles) from the resin itself and helps promote a smoother finish. Highly suggest watching a few others, especially the epoxy counter top guys as its a technique they use all the time to give a amazing finish!
In the upholstery world all you did was wrap these with carbon fiber, skinning involves wrapping the part like you did, stopping mechanical locking points, popping the carbon fiber off the part wrapped and reinforcing the part for rigidity. Skinning simply is the most cost effective way to create CF parts without creating molds.
I'm surprised the epoxy would dry in the absence of air, and that when it did, it didn't bond to the plastic bag. Also, I thought you had a 4 series. haha
Epoxy doesnt dry. It cures. Big difference. Air is not needed. Its purley a chemical reaction. People always use the term "dry out" but thats a misnomer.
While maybe okay for small parts, i wouldnt trust that spray tack on larger stuff or things that see more stress. Like say someone had a wing they wanted to skin. A coating of spray tack is a weak temporary removable barrier that now prevents your epoxy from actually bonding to the surface of your item. Plus anything sitting out in the hot sun where the item continually expands and contracts every day of the week would, over time, probably delaminate the carbon fiber away from the surface of the below item being that item is coated with flimsy spray tack. 😬😒🙄
If you need this real carbon fiber accessories, you can come to me. My store has real carbon fiber for all models. There are many discounts when you buy from me
Thats not a real carbon fiber part.. you just added carbon fiber on some other material..😂 in that case its better to hydro dip it simply and get the same out put😂😂
Purpose of carbon should be reducing weight, by skinning parts we are adding weight (however miniscule). So in the end it's just eye candy. It's like those 10 fake air vents on BMW Toyota Supra, those in the know will not be impressed, those who don't know don't matter because to them it's just the luxury badge that is important.
carbon has become more aesthetic on show cars then actual weigh reduction besides, the oem vents that he skinned likely weigh less then 2 pounds, skinning added maybe 0.5lbs skinning something like a whole hood is another thing but stuff like this isn't worth making a mold and custom tabs for a one off
Those in the know would also know that the amount of time effort and money involved in making this entire part from carbon would not be worth the few grams of weight saved.
Laminating parts for bmw g30 m550 by this way it is the worst that i saw... For vw golf 3 1990 maybe its ok, but not for car of this lvl, the way you do the work is important. For youtube its ok...

Not if the spray adhesive is given time to cure. I've got skinned parts on my car that are now 6 years old that haven't delaminated.

This isn’t really a carbon-fiber only part. So why not use CF vinyl wrap instead of real fiber?
Because they're a difference still between real carbon and vinyl, which is not carbon at all
