- Coney reacts to "Why Do We Play Games We Hate" by Daryl Talks Games and talks about not only the obvious, but also the contrary of playing games he loves and how he wishes the development cycles weren't so long for the game's continuation.

When we were watching this live, I honestly forgot the start was the same video. I thought we suddenly switched to a new video out of nowhere lol.
The 4 categories that Daryl separated it into are very good descriptions for playing games we hate.
I like how the thumbnail is just OnlyOneHere
"How can you hate Mario 64" Proceeds to list an insane number of major problems with the game lol. I love the game to death but it's ok to not like it.
M64 is a pure nostalgia bomb. Yes, it was genre-defining, but still it shows that the genre it was defining was barely even in its infant shoes.
The technical issues are ignorable because of how old it is, but I think the boss argument makes sense. Still a great game tho
Bro I played ocarina as a kid but never Mario 64 do I have Stockholm or is ocarina actually good?(I’ll probably hold my opinion but I’m curious🤔)
@@yeahey5947 Both are good games that show signs of age from an experimental time of discovery in 3D gaming.
@@kyx5631 I think M64 still has a lot of merits. The bosses and cameras suck, but the levels themselves combined with the tightness of controlling Mario (which they spent literal years perfecting) are still super satisfying to this day. Not to mention the M64 renaissance going on with insane speedruns and romhacks that accomplish some incredible feats for n64. Calling it pure nostalgia is a bit too harsh imo.
Me opening a new video from my favorite content creator: “Oh cool the new house! I wonder how the set up is gonna look once he’s all finished!”
Coney, immediately: “Hey RUclips shut the fuck up”
Do you know what the name of the song at the start is? 😭
Coney referencing Freud when the video talks about bf skinner made me madder than it should have
Concorde wasn’t a financial black hole. It actually made money for a lot of its service life. It was a government subsidized project a lot of the operating cost was covered by the French and UK governments. The real death of the Concorde was nation wide noise abatement laws which meant it could only be effectively flown between Paris and Newyork.
Calling Concorde a financial failure is like calling Tesla a financial failure. The UK and French government had plenty of reasons to continue the program other than sunk cost. The whole project was a symbol of national pride in an industry that had recently become entirely dominated by American companies. It was also a top priority for Soviet intelligence, something which has saved loads of government projects that would be otherwise shelved.
That line abt taking some time away from gsming is genuinely so true. I was in a strut for a while but when i took a break i was reeled back in later and it felt so fuckin good to play a game for multiple hours again
The META exhaustion discussion is so important. Games I used to play religiously become stressful and a chore to play because the only way to enjoy the game is to play the META.
Shooters: This weapon or you lose.
Fighters: This character + combo, or you lose.
RPGS: This build or you lose.
And the worst part is... the META changes so rapidly at times where if you stop keeping eyes on it, your game can become something unrecognizable and unplayable.
the bad lighting lowkey making Coney look like a unit 💪
The cup head rule also applies to persona fans. Persona 6 gonna come out when I got grandkids

When coney was talking about waiting for cup head and being surprised at how good it was all I could think about was Omori.
I like how Coney has never worn a bright green shirt yet he has been photoshopped in like 5 different thumbnails
Alright, gotta say it: BIGGEST flaw of Mario 64 is how small everything feels. Each level feels dead and lifeless and you have to go through the same dead and lifeless level for every star, only altering minor things for each star. A game like Mario Galaxy, in comparison, feels alive while still having a lot of void because of the style and music. Like, I love Bob-omb Battlefield's theme as much as the next guy, but I don't want to listen to it on repeat for 30+ minutes to get every star. The soundtrack should remind you of fun things that you did during that level, not instill dread upon hearing it for the thousandth time. If you've played Mario Galaxy, you can probably hear each soundtrack and can think of a few fun things you did for each track. It instills memories from a better time in your life. Mario 64 soundtrack reminds you that you have to do that same level all over again just for the route to be SLIGHTLY different. But that's just my opinion.
Lmao the lighting
Coney why didnt you tell me you were moving i just got home (your basement, in case you forgot) and now apparently im under arrest for trespassing because you didn't tell the new owners that i live there
Dude for a while I was having trouble with getting into gaming, then I started playing God of War (1 and ps4 at the same time believe it or not) then instantly got hooked again into gaming. Immediately afterward I started playing Elden Ring then I just got sucked into the Souls franchise. Finally realized how amazing video games are haha
I have discovery like this all the time in gaming actually. You keep on discovering love when you think you found it all.
Coney looking like he's locked up in a basement with a singular bright ass lightbulb dangling from the roof
Finally made it to the content dungeon 🙌
Coney looks like he’s being lit by a small plastic monkey statue holding a lightbulb in a basement
While it's sad that few Cuphead games will be made in our lifetime, it stands to reason that post-Covid, Studio MDHR won't have as many obstacles in communication and development. I bet they'll also get more funding from The Cuphead Show, so they can hire more artists and possibly speed up production. Not to mention how much of an impact it'll have on gaming, as it's inspired Enchanted Portals which should still be a fun time despite not having as much budget.
I'm glad to say, Coney's content is so good I don't even read his titles anymore. I just see a new video, I know it's worth watching. Great job Coney!
I always love when Coney sends random DBD strays because it makes me regret my choices with it haha
The way that I’m playing Shadow Of The Colossus and then he mentions it. It IS fantastic.
Also god I love Bioshock as well
Someone oughta tell coney his campfire is almost out of wood

FF16 is best described this way. A completely okay 7/10 game where every five hours you'll experience the coolest shit you've ever seen
Coney where are you, did you get kidnapped?
Very happy that coney finally turned on dynamic shadows

Cool lighting man.
Yes Im watching and commenting on this year old video. I have to say it looks like an old 1970's movie with this lighting. It's like a documentary where your surprised they have footage of this era.
good vid though
I completely agree with the point on the end. When I just got out of highschool played video games way more then any other time in my life and I got burnt out. I felt really sad cause these games brought me so much joy now just are empty. Then I got a job and started doing other stuff and now I'm back to gaming.
5:35 I've had this opinion ever since Celeste came out, Golden strawberries are stupid no hit/no death requirements for 100% should not be a thing. But I'd also like to add on to that, they especially shouldn't be a 100% requirement IF ITS UNOPTIMAL TO PLAY THE GAME WITHOUT DYING. In Celeste speedruns there are MULTIPLE areas of the game where dying is FASTER, so even if you were a world record celeste player you wouldn't get those strawberries naturally because not dying would be SLOWER
So like 1% of the people who played Celeste are speedrunners so I don't see how "optimal" matters to anyone besides them. Why would game designers center a game's achievements around what only a fraction of people on Earth are capable of.
Second, Golden strawbs are meant to be a different way to experience the game. They force you to slow down and intimately learn a level as opposed to the short term memorization process of the main game or the intense execution challenges of the B- and C-sides. It's not them arbitrarily making you play the game again without dying, it's them asking you to play the game from a different angle.
Fact of the matter is that it IS a 100% requirement and you either complete or you don't. No amount of griping will change that or make it easier.
@@ByrneBaby Ok I see you fundamentally don't understand what these no death achievements are created for. They are there as a challenge for people who want to master a game, which is flawed cause mastering a game rarely includes doing the whole thing without dying. Forcing players to keep retry spamming to get no deaths is legitimately the WORST way you can learn a game, this is not a joke this is literally proven, go learn any game you want the best way to be consistently good at a game is to play it through so you develop consistency. Its flawed game design from any angle you look at it.
14:45 Coney really just pulled the “Name one thing wrong with the game but you can’t mention the bad parts”.
Coney you of all people who shit on old games for not holding up should have to be more open to people not liking the controls of Mario 64. You have gotten used to them. Mario 64 is a fantastic game, but the controls have aged like fucking milk. Anyway this is a pointless debate when Coney is going to come in and say “no” and ratio me because streamer always wins
9:46 I think the part about having to keep up with the meta is one that I can understand, but is also one I feel like that is one that is easy to avoid as well. As someone who likes to play a lot of fighters, I don't usually need to be "at the top of the meta," I just want to have fun and try and make slight improvements along the way. As long as you aren't only into certain competitive games to climb a ranked ladder, I think that more people should try and commit more to the games they've spent so much time on in order to just have some fun
I agree with this in most cases, but it's not so easy when matchmaking is skill-based. Even if I want to take it easy while playing a multiplayer game, the hot streak I had the night before is going to come back to frustrate me if the game uses an mmr system.
@@verycleanguy1771 I would then say mainly stay to casual matches and public lobby matches then. Just playing whoever comes your way without a single worry of ranks
@@gaminglakitu some games don’t even have that. Splatoon 3 for example has winstreak-based matchmaking (which nothing in the game tells you about) for both casual and ranked matches, and 4/5 of its game modes are locked behind ranked
@@verycleanguy1771 Yeah I guess that's fair in Splatoon's case. Probably goes the same for games woth Battle Passes as you can get heated and burned out over not being able to complete the challenges you need to level up

I don't hate genshin, i love that game! I hated it for a bit but that was during a Phase where I forced myself to do dailies for months on end in games I had gotten tired of a while ago, which is why I still can't play genshin and ninjala actively for longer than a month at a time to this day, but I still do love genshin!

"is that why you're a bigass gorilla?"
"yeah..."
struggling at a game then going to sleep then waking up and being way better is because your brain literally trains in your sleep there's some really interesting studies on it
Sometimes it just takes a long time and you take a big break and come back and find love for a game you didn't before and you don't what change inside you, but you're now able to love what's inside.
This was me with Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, kinda. First playthrough I despised everything about the game, second playthrough about a year later I hated it a little bit less mostly because I had gotten better, third playthrough not long after that it finally clicked and I started to have fun with the game. Ninja Gaiden 3 is still a bad game (bad story, bad level design, bad boss design, some bad enemy design) but it’s combat system is one of the best in the genre… when it wants to be, its like the game realizes “oh, shit he’s having fun” and decides to just make the game as frustrating as possible some times (which is why you actively avoid most of the game’s campaign if you want to have fun with it).
The problem with ff16 is that it's not quite devil may cry and it's not quite final fantasy and it creates this middle ground where nothing really feels right
I loved Mario 64 at first, especially before I owned a N64 and was trying it out at Toys R US. The 3D world was magical and incredible. The level of freedom was so new and wondrous. But then I got the game, I say down and actually started to play the full game and understood how it worked. It slowly started to become a chore to find each and every star. Around 40 or 50 starts I wanted it to be over. I couldn't wait for those last 20 stars so I could finally finish this chore of a game. And I've never gone back to play it since, in fact, after that, I never touched any 3D platformers at all.... until Mario Odyssey that is, which was fun after so long. But I still don't really feel like playing it again.
It's funny cuz' at some point like around 7 years or so ago, I stopped beating games. Now Idk if it's because I get bored faster, they're boring games, because I hate them (It's not cuz' I hate them), but I just stop after like a week or 2 regardless if I beat it or got as much as I wanted out of them or not, I just get bored and stop I guess. Oh and it's not every game btw it's mostly only single-player games or story driven games. If I don't have an enthused friend to play and beat them with, or if they get bored and stop before I do, I'll eventually stop as well.
FF16 is one of those games that has pretty un-ignorable flaws but some REALLY, REALLY good parts, and it basically depends on the person whether the flaws outweigh the good, imo it's a fantastic game but many will disagree
Just beat it, and outside of the complaints of exploration which never bothered me. As they never really occurred to me in my play-through, what other flaws were there?
@@trainerbrendan969 the pacing can be quite slow at times and they just dump so many sidequests on you at once by the end, also some characters just get like no screentime despite seeming kinda important, and clive really has to move his ass faster why does it take so long to go through the hideaway
@@lukes.854 yeah i look back and i kinda see that, i mean in time for me to beat 7r i only just got the limit break in 16 (about 40 hours) but then again for all i know i might have been playing really slow. Although yeah the movement is really slow, doesn’t help that the sprint felt really weird. Although i didn’t notice when it came to a lot of the cast feeling underdeveloped. Also weirdly when playing through the game the complaint of no party system i am actually completely okay with, mainly cause of my experience with 7r and trials of mana’s ai not being great and 16’s seemingly not being that much better. But the fact it wasn’t my problem anymore I actually quite liked.
Congratulations on moving Coney!
Lighting's fine man don't worry about it
all goes back to reggie, when he was nintendo CEO - "if it's not fun, why bother"
Now I’m wondering if I hate any video games, maybe just momentary Annoyance
20:20 You sure did get to go Coney
I definitely don’t rage in online smash, because I live in an area that doesn’t allow me to play online, so when I’m able to play online, I treasure every battle, win or lose
Coney in that 2006 looking ass room
Coney almost made me cry with that Metroid comment 😭😭
20:19 Aged poorly but at least that means that he's able to play Pikmin on launch day
The greatest contrarian of all time
to be fair to the people who finish games just to know why they hate it, the number of times ive played an action rpg and had to put up with all my attacks being unsafe on hit until the core mechanics turned on is ridiculous
What’s up with the lighting?
IT WAS A BAD JOOOOOOKE
I'll get tired / bored of a game if I play it too much, but I don't think I've ever...grown to hate a game I used to love. I've become disappointed with games over time, like overwatch and halo, but I don't really think that was my fault lol
Yea those games suck
2:12 Coney casually forgets about Australia
New coney room. Wheres the hole in closet?
I think SotC is a good example, I love it to death and i can easily see why people wouldn’t like it or see what I see
4:30 F-ZERO GX mentioned.
I mostly only play one game I hate and it's called yugioh master duel, i have such a love hate relationship with yugioh! That might also be because I refuse to do anything meta in that game, even crafting one baronne that I used in one of my decks made me cringe out of my mind and all of my decks are 60 cards because"it's more fun that way", but in reality I'm slowly but surely being forced to open up to meta ideas...
Also, splatoon makes me CRAZY angry but I don't hate that game.
Mainline Pokémon games have the oddest vibe in this aspect of “why play what you hate?” I feel I don’t outright hate even the glitchy messes they’ve put out, but instead just feel an empty space in my heart, knowing that other series successfully capture magic better but Pokémon lacks so much polish simply because they release so constantly. When they do hit, it’s awesome! But it’s often short-lived bursts of a few minutes in the middle of a much longer game.
That’s why I think games like Metroid Dread or even Pikmin 3 have a cool magic to them. There’s just enough to do that you feel like you’re exploring a lot but almost the whole process feels like it’s still magic. Kinda what Sakurai talked about a while ago about how “content ≠ good”; it CAN, like TotK did that pretty well! But it’s much harder than it looks, and takes a LOT of time and polish and maybe release delays to make something that will better withstand the test of time.
"What does everyone see in this game?" that was me with Hollow Knight, Elden Ring, Persona 4, Risk of Rain 2...Crypt of the Necrodancer...A Hat in Time.......Guilty Gear Strive.......Xenoblade 1 remake.......the list goes on
I don't want to dislike popular games because if so many people like it then there's gotta be something good about it
But oh man
A lot of games so many other people like are just so, so unenjoyable and it makes me sad I can't have the same experience as everyone else
My guy, that is almost my exact feeling on games like Minecraft, Undertale, overwatch, league, etc. But ESPECIALLY with Mario games. I have to accept that I have a very narrow selection of video games I enjoy, and it's a bit of a bummer.
I just don’t have sunk cost like at all. I had like 500 hours in destiny 2 and then one day I said “this sucks” and stopped playing. Also big shoutout for showing unsighted, that game was so cool for 2 hours and then it was boring, finished it just to finish.
one game i'm sad i'll never get to play again for the first time is outer wilds. what a phenomenal game that thrives on not knowing anything. the only way to experience it again is vicariously through another person playing it.
My old married couple game is Dmc5.
14:35 I beat Mario 64 on my school-issues Chromebook during study halls, I could only move 8 directions and couldn’t use the c or z buttons and still had a fucking blast. Bowser throws still blew tho lmao
You know what I'm not going to lie I feel the same way about 64 as 14:20 because I think the only reason why people are disagreeing with this is because they're rather they played the original game on the N64 or there a speedrunners
The only game ive ever had a love/hate relationship with was fall guys. I was heavily addicted to that when it came out and would take months breaks before diving back in. I am proud to be 5 months clean
Honestly I love when Coney watches movies
Golden strawberries are so dumb I’m just out at that point I got better shit to do.
A coney video In a different room just looks… off…

I’m so happy that bit with shadow of the colossus was using that game, I cannot STAND that game
Yoooooooo! Coney got a new house thats dope.
To a certain extent, when you can point out flaws, you actually have a healthy relationship. Unless you live in a communist dictatorship, this is how the economy is supposed to function. He who can market goods amd services in ways that people already want will profit
The idea is that there is an ideal crop which resonates with the people and we spend our time refining what that is so that it becomes readily accessible
Unfortunately there are designers and artisans who can't seem to let go of rigid methods and become arcane. My guess is because threshing hard feels like the foundation of work, so there cannot be any other way than to make progress in _that_ direction
Its a very king of the hill mentality where the ruler has the emperor's clothes. GameFreak and the Pokemon company outrank Lucasfilms in terms of merchandising. The only problem is they can't remember how to make Pokemon interesting anymore
I did a deep dive and realized that my favorite aspect of the game is in what ways the series gave you liberty to orient team building. You can teach moves or withhold them. You can give them crazy names. Evolve them. Have a bad team, have a phenomenal team. You can squad with 6 or keep them in all box
At the end of it all, what I realize was missing from new generations is that they figure that you aren't smart enough to play with all that liberty. The games could look like garbage and I wouldn't bat an eye. But since new Pokemon is _tedious_ I have no incentive to invest time. Now, because counterintuitive AND it looks terrible, I have reason to hate on it. There are decisions being made over there that gives the impression of incompetence, misallocated resources, and redundancy
That's when it becomes abundantly clear that its not me. They really think that because I'm not in their age projection, that they don't have to abide by competent business practice. Art doesn't have to be throttled by demographic or intelligence. It's's meant to be a concerted effort that invites people to invest their appreciation
So at the end of the day I think that a good reason to fall out of love is when an establishment becomes shallow and unmotivated. Sometimes games cut corners and don't do what it takes to make a decent impression in the presentation. We start to look for flaws, but really its our brains trying to make reasonable connections for ease of access. This is how relationships are formed by the way, that which fires together, wires together
Finally escaped their bunker and jesus christ I've missed coney vids. Glad to see not much has changed❤
Edit: WTF WHY IS HE IN A DIFFERENT ROOM!?
4:08 as someone that speedruns Hades, fuck Hades (affectionate)
Coney take it from someone who has 1400+ hours in Dead By Daylight, BAN ANYBODY who tells you to play that game, that game makes me feel like i need therapy and makes me hate myslelf. dont let your viewers EVER convince you to put yourself through the mental hell that is Dead By Daylight.
Coney it’s not Freud, it’s BF Skinner

God I hope this doesn't happen to me with Baldur's Gate 3
I think there is a legitimate debate as for Mario 64 being bad by modern standards, the camera and controls are janky af but for the time it was revolutionary and probably the best game. That's why we have 64DS if you don't want to speedrun it the remake iron all its flaws and is a reaaaaally solid game
