Cant remember Ohtani and Judge the same because one started good and got hurt, but won! The other didn't get started until the end of the 4th game, had a blunder and lost! Great players and series.
This play will be the signature play of Mookie’s HoF career. Like all coaches teach Pony League players, the pitcher has to cover 1st…and just as importantly, the batter MUST run hard in case something happens. A World Series may have tipped on Mookie hustling to first on a probable ground out…
@@devlinjointz4754 his initial reaction was just like all of us at first, and that was “inning is over”. Then we all realized that it wasn’t. Even us Dodgers were shocked at what happened, and then we started cheering once we realized what happened 😂
I'm with Votto on Rizzo's read. The last thing he wants to do that moment is to have a Bill Buckner error. Judge not catching that fly ball is a head scratcher.
Thankfully we have real players out here talking about rizzo making a good choice and cole just not being there. All ex players know this, fans saying its rizzos fault dont know baseball
@droppinBOMBS310 yeah, after the game in his press interview he seemed remorseful honestly about it, he did say he didn't cover the bag which was I think good for him to openly say that he just didn't make the play can't blame rizzo, atleast that is good
Ya Jake on Talkin Baseball was all over the place against Trevor about this and the Volpe play. Like dude Cole needs to run to cover that base no matter what. He'll get the hand if Rizzo has it.
nothing is as simple as "fans don't know baseball" but yeah, it's deeper than most fans understand. that being said, rizzo didn't even TRY to make it to 1B to make the play. while we're throwing blame around, that has to be mentioned.
Post people have him as a lock for the hall of fame. I don't think he is actually slept on. He just hasn't been in that elite class for a while 2021 was a good year. But 2018 was the end of his prime for sure.
15:25 Votto missed the boat on the Dodger pen. They had to use their high leverage pen incredibly early in Game 5, this is why they were running out of arms.
Cole pointed at first base, but didn't run over as a basic action to take as the pitcher. It looked bizarre the first time I saw it, and each time on replay. More like he's motioning to Rizzo: "Hey, run. Hurry up." While he's not attempting to help out!?
I think he still had the two errors on his mind. After the two strikeouts of Lux and Ohatani, he was probably like, 'I should already be out of this inning.' He lost his focus, imo.
I doesn't look like he broke for first, I've watched it a bunch of times. Like he was going for the ball? He was never beating Betts to first with where he was. And, I also didn't see Rizzo doing everything possible to get to first.
a guy not finding his swing for an entire post-season until the last game, isn't the same as a guy being MAYBE 40% physically. judge is a good dude and of course it sucks FOR HIM, but what happened to judge is not the same thing as what happened to shohei.
True, as a Dodger fan, I like Aaron Judge. The funny thing is if Judge were in the Dodgers lineup, I believe he would perform. Baseball is a team sport, not one man can win the whole thing. Look at how Mike Trout is with the Angels. In fact, in the 2024 NLCS, Freeman was 3 for 18, hitting .167, and an OPS of .377, while Ohtani was for 8 for 22, hitting .364, . and an OPS of 1.185., 2 homeruns, 6 rbi's. Without Ohtani performing in the NLCS, you could forget about the World Series. People are prisoners of the moment.
yeah, they’re not even remotely the same. shohei had a great DS and CS before he got hurt. had a clutch double in game 1. gets injured in game 2. judge did a whole lotta nothing all postseason.
great interview with joey, as always, but i’m sick of this narrative that shohei speaks better english than “he leads on.” he knows english. he speaks to his teammates and coaches in english all the time. when he does media, he speaks in japanese so his words are not misconstrued. it’s not some secret that he knows english.
I think the key to winning the 2024 World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers was (the effect of) the Freeman injury and the Ohtani injury. The message, it sent to the Yankees players and fans, that these guys are not gonna sit in the dugout and watch. Whether they play well, which Freeman did. Or not up to how they played before being injured, which is what happened to Ohtani, they're resolved to play, on this stage, inspired Dave Roberts and the Dodgers player's, coupled with Ice Cube's performance. They weren't gonna quit.
Graterol struck Judge out TWICE in game 5, but both pitches were called balls. Yankees don't take the 6-5 lead, Soto's not on 3rd, fly ball ends the inning. Giving Judge credit for taking tough pitches, those weren't borderline pitches they were inside the box
Hey Votto the Dodgers did have a class A pitcher to come in and that was Blake Treinan but obviously you forgot that most of our starting pictures were injured so he came in and pitched in the sixth seventh and eighth inning.
He did mention Treinen but yes the bullpen especially before all the injuries was one of the best in baseball. Unfortunately the decimated starting pitching as well as really short outings by the remaining starters put the pen in some tough spots. Shout out to Vesia, Phillips, Banda, Kopech, Treinen, Hudson and the rest of the guys for holding it down most of the season.
Such BS analysis. Even if everything he says is true (it's not), Rizzo was much closer to the bag than Betts. He made zero effort. None. He could have beat him out if he made any attempt.
Watch the play again, last second Rizzo shifts and has to reach back to get that ball. I still agree 100% if he hustles and doesn't give up he can least make it close but once he went for the flip and realized no one was there, he completely gave up
@EarnestWilliamsGeofferic every baseball player knows Cole has to cover the bag. I played first base and pitched in college and did this drill over and over on both ends of this play. I always know my pitcher is covering and as a pitcher I always know to run to the bag. Cole in the post game interview said it was his error. He thought the ball was moving really slow but it wasn't, so he just darted towards the ball to try to field it but it was way harder than he thought and he wasn't close to fielding it. So then instead of taking the proper route and moving to the bag he just stopped running and just mentally lapsed for a second, so he just pointed then realized he screwed up. He did an amazing job to go back out and pitch after that for more innings, I don't know many if any pitchers that could do that and get outs without giving up anymore runs. But when the guy himself says he knows he should have been there you gotta know that the dude making millions to make the play probably knows he actually should be covering the bag
cole said in a post game interview he misread the bal and at first thought he would field the ball but when he realized he had no play he was out of position to cover 1st base
Ohtani played with just one arm due to torn labrum in his shoulder which required surgery. It’s remarkable he stayed in the lineup simply to help the dodger. Others would be on IL right away. He doesn’t care about his numbers. Bravo to Shohei!!
I used to love Tim Nearing when Boston brought him up, weird to think it's been so long ago that he had become a farm director before Votto was even a rookie
Yankees fan keeps avoiding the elephant in the room with the 2024 WS. It's not the 5th inning in game 5 that's the problem. It's dropping the first three games to the Dodgers. If the Yankees could have managed a split in LA and they split the first two in NY wich they did then game 5 would have been a temporary setback and not the epic embarrassment it was. This series was lost when the Dodgers took the first three games.
Rizzo was not that far away, Cole paused and relaxed. Mookie ran it out. The fact that Cole pointed to rizzo like it was his fault was a big mistake. That inning fell apart when Judge dropped that routine fly out.
For one inning last night, the World Series was a Little League affair. I wonder which stings more for the Yankee fans: Freeman Walk-off grand slam in Game 1 or last night's melt down, wasting a 5-0 lead in the elimination game.
Votto no World Series has 100% clean games making this segment about himself 😅 the two teams are nothing you’ll ever know Btw Shohei played very well in NLCS
The pitcher should have attempted to help cover 1st base. It should have been a natural instinct no matter what. It's just a lazy culture in the Yankees organization. Players constant lazy avoidable errors that cost them big time. Love Dodgers, they played hard not matter how bad it looked for them. I wonder what the odds were in Vegas for a comeback odds for the dodgers to win when the 5th inning started with the yankee's up 5-0. 1000 to 1. you could have retired taking that bet.
Joey is the man. He looks like a meathead actually. But the first time I heard him speak, I was surprised to hear him speak so uniquely incisively intelligent. Great baseball mind. Wish he would have come to LA, as he would have fit in very well with the boys in blue.
The analytics is killing the game all these players out of position why play that deep at first with a speedster hitting Cole probably doesn't get there anyway
Wrong. Any hit grounder to the left the pitcher goes to first base. Period. Cole gaffed harder than jodge or volpe. Inning would be over. Dodger fan celebrexing. I love hellay!¡!!¡!!!
Dodgers win in 5 games and did it pretty much without Ohtani who disappeared this series. What a team! I know people get mad when I state the fact that Ohtani was bad in this World Series, they’ll make excuses and bring up other games/series but Ohtani was bad this World Series. Simple fact. So they won in 5 despite Ohtani being bad.. Now imagine Ohtani actually showing up in a future WS? This team is the favorite for years to come!
