    Nice Captain Kurtz. Nice.
I have the Caves of the Chaos Springing up as a reaction to the Keep that's been placed too far into the lands of Chaos. Some Clerics in Cave K are lead here by A monk, An assassin and a Priest who set up their base in the Cave of the Unknown. Depending on my mood they either found or choose their spot because it is near the Ancient Shrine of Evil which I will connect to the Cthulu like Alien gods found in Against the Giants and Thrazidun just in case we ever end up there. Monk Assassin and Cleric run the evil priests in K who in turn are recruiting a lot of the monster men in the other caves. The master plan from on high is to cut off this Keep by strangling their trade. There is no agriculture going on here to speak of though I have some vegetable gardens and husbandry in the Keep and some hunters and fishers plying the streams and forests.
Random Groups of these monsters are taken out to waylay the merchants bringing in supplies to this government subsidized keep. PC's first encounter will likely be either rescuing merchants on the road from bandits or just getting waylaid themselves by goblins with a human or half orc leader on their way here.
As I read it it does sound way too Lawful Evil but it's my story for why all the creatures in the condo. And they don't get along well and are competing for jobs and the treasure from the jobs.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 The difference between your channel and the talking heads are phenomenal.
It obviously takes more time, because the craftsmanship is astounding, your knowledge of the evolution of the game crystalized through a life of playing is priceless, your house rules are insightful. I use almost all of them, and the background stories you give to your villains are entertaining to the point of soap opera style addiction.
I have been reading up on orcs and watching videos and find myself confused. Would you consider making one (or more) orc video(s)? On whatever you want, of course but I am particularly interested in seeing how you deal with orc specific terrain and personalities. , If you use their pantheon, how do you incorporate it? How has the orc race been redefined from original d&d to 5e? If you wrote about them in dragon magazine, what did you say?

I use a stress system and health system. This is very similar to Darkest Dungeon. Stress is a serious factor in real life and equally in the game and if a character gets 100 stress they must make a Will Saving throw (DC: 15) If the succeed, they gain a virtue assigned with a D6 Role. A role of a Six is 100 percent stress reduction and 50 stress reduced across the whole party along with some severe buffs for them. If they fail, they must role a D10. A role of a 10 they will cause the stress of the party to leap up 50 points. Plus, they take huge stat penalties depending on what they role. However some Afflictions have a chance to increase damage. This makes Bards an almost essential for controlling stress. Traps, Hunger and crits can increase stress. However when performing acts well, critical hits, killing enemies and taking time to relax stress will go down. Darkness in my games is really dangerous because of passive stress building.

It occurs to me that a lot of these details are stories which write themselves. Rulkin could retreat to seek asylum with the bandits via the hidden passageway, or Red Fergus could learn of Rulkin's demise and swear to avenge him, possibly taking proactive action against the PCs and leading to a climatic final battle that feels like the end of the campagin...only for the players to remember that they still have 6 more caves of carnage to explore!

I like the justification for how the dungeon works. Everyone playing D&D at some point asks...why would all those monsters co-exist. The idea of an economic tie in makes sense because it's just more realistic. Plus, the players have to suss it out by gameplay and smarts. So, you're not hitting them up with it right away so you can avoid feeling like many of us did when we learned that the central tension in The Phantom Menace was...a trade agreement! This is a much better way.
    Congrats to the winner!

In order for it to be the same for first level characters and fifth level characters the number should increase. But you're saying this room would be easier for fifth level so the number decreased.

I was (and still am) getting inspiration from these videos.
I started a home brew sci-fi story with a few youngsters using a simple but effective 2D6 system. The target number idea you explain here has been invaluable to this system.
For example, if I perceive a challenge to be hard then the the target number is 9 or higher (27.78% chance), very hard, 10 or higher and so on.

Remember CoC was a rules light module. Overview- A deity offended by the spread of the kingdom of men on this world has contacted one of his priest (lvl. K) and told him to come to these caves at the edge of man's kingdom. Gather evil & chaotic forces of all kinds in the caves. STOP the spread by keeping kingdoms isolated (ie terrorizing and controlling the roads) once gathered and first goal completed. Sacrifice great sacrifices to deity, who will in return give cleric great power to march on and overcome the kingdom's of men. B2 was just the beginning of a save the world campaign where the priest rather than fail his deity ultimately escapes through the callopsed tunnel eventually finding his way into the caves of the unknown, where, not only is there a sleeping terrasque, in addition to other terrible evils( at the time, coming to life from the pages of the fiend folio) but in a deep deep cavern in the underdark, there is a planar portal to limbo in a complex of beholders like never before seen, where Beholders and slaad are trying to negotiate a treaty where both races can "work together" and rule many worlds. Of course, The mighty adventurers from The Keep on the Borderlands, have to destroy a society of randomly gathered monsters in a monster hotel that are just gathered together because it's there. I could go on, but, it's a little close minded, in my opinion, to ass u me without extending some effort to gather facts. Although, honestly, maybe I should go back and check to see if this plotline was actually printed and or insinuated in the original module that I purchased in 1979 or if it just seemed so obvious to me after reading the whole thing. if any of these statements offend anyone who reads them I apologize in advance for your perception of these innocently stated text. they were not meant to offend just to explain rules light expectation, opportunity. BTW- love the viewpoint, Caves of Carnage. Rules light says, here is the framework, make it your own.👍👍

I have only recently gotten back into playing, the last time was 2001, so for my first campaign back, I’ve been playing 5thed D&D basically by the book, particularly because my players really wanted to play that way. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach and get my players to try out a style of play like you do? My own reimagining wasn’t far off your own; though your meteor and alien obelisk is way more brilliant. I had envisioned the evil priests as drawing these groups of monsters together under the banner of a demonic lord’s will and even the bandits in the surrounding countryside as being in league with the priests. Some of the townsfolk in the keep are part of this cult, spying and reporting on the goings on of he keep and its inhabitants. But I digress and believe your own adaptation is superbly imaginative - far beyond my simplistic story arc compared to yours. Amazing.

Hey! I really enjoy your content. My question is about an earlier video. I was wondering where you get the miniatures used for the creepers in the caves of carnage video? I am trying to create a similar encounter for my game and was wondering were i could find them. Great videos by the way!

Question; you mention the d4 (terrible thing) roll adds tension to the encounter. Are the players aware of the result of the roll or are they just aware that the roll exists?

Watching your head bob around without being able to see your hands looks a little awkward. You might want to consider moving the camera back a bit.
