@washed_out_ I don't think you should be surprised the Flyers passed up on Cole Caufield. Your team throughout its history is built on the philosophy that a good hockey team should be built on size, brute strength and physicality to succeed in the playoffs. With that said, for an NHL team to succeed nowadays, skill is more valued in an NHLer than size. It's hard for me to think the Flyers will hoist another Stanley Cup in another generation if they continue to draft year by year a lot of tall, lumbering and slow hockey players.
he's the best natural sniper we had since Stéphane Richer, Pacioretty had to be fed but Caulfield is just at the right place every time, a true goalscorer
This story really does remind me of the comeback story of the Los Angeles Kings in their cup to glory after being down 3-0 in the first round to San Jose. They went on to win the Cup and Tyler Toffoli was part of that run as well. Good memories of that here in Long Beach, Los Angeles.
They literally said this about Wayne Gretzky. He's too small. Then they said it about Theoren Fleury. He's even smaller than Caufield, and that was a tougher time. And then look at St Louis too.
Looking at the prospects that were selected before it's not a knock to have him fall to 15th. What's great about the NHL today is that it gives small players like Cole Caufield to succeed with the rules changes.
I'm 6,3, played elite hockey all my youth, NEVER did i take a man's (kids) size as a disadvantage... never underestimated a shorter dude... i boxed 5 years as well... same thing
This was the only draft I've ever watched, and I remember being excited that Montreal managed to get a top 10 pick at 15th. As a fellow small guy, I was definitely happy to see how well he's doing. ...Also VERY happy as a Habs fan.
Saying size doesn't matter is akin to drafting based solely on stats, you can only take a small guy when you have a team that's on the larger size to make sure it wont be used against the player. Size may never hold this kid up, he certainly looks like a superstar already, but look at some of the beasts he is surrounded by, look at how rough the playoffs have been. It takes a special player to ignore all that when drafting a player. As a Habs fan, I was pretty happy when the habs got him but I wasn't thinking in the slightest that he would be this impactful this early. His impact is also down to how the Habs are using him, keep his minutes low, his energy is through the roof every time he hits the ice, and with that much energy reserve and that talent, well that's something fun to watch :) Those 3 kids for the habs have been so good this year, the future don't look so bad does it.
He's got quick feet. Guy moves like a bunny rabbit. That move he pulled going around McNabb was a thing of beauty and finesse. With skills like that at 20, it's only going to get better.
I think in a redraft he deserved top 3 along with Seider and still arguably Hughes or Dach. Argue whichever order you like, potentially including team needs at the time. I think top 5 is these 4 plus Zegras.
The 2019 draft was just so stacked. Vasily Podkolzin becomes eligible to play in the NHL (after) this year. Matt Boldy just got signed, Spencer Knight's ridiculous. Caufield deserved a higher pick, definitely a steal. But he's also a steal that was given the time to develop, just like Alex Debrincat. That makes a massive difference.
The Habs have never really been afraid to draft small. Henri Richard was also 5'7, as was Yvan Cournoyer. They would have drafted Denis Savard, if they hadn't been able to resist drafting instead "the Habs draft pick no Habs fan will utter".
3:07 I think both Suzuki and Caulfield were healthy scratches if im not mistaken, I had heard though it was to give them a sense of the atmosphere of playoff hockey.
I'm a Leafs fan and I'm glad the Habs are doing so well. Most Leafs fans are angry because the Leafs didn't perform how they should have, not because Montreal wasn't a good team. I watched the games and knew that the nonsense about the north division was total crap. Enjoy Habs fans, all the best. Even with the way the top players played it was a great series.
For all intents and purposes the Habs have already won the cup, they beat an inter- conference team in the postseason. Capped by the fact they eliminated 3 teams that EVERY pundit predicted they would lose to. Doesn't matter what happens in this 'Cup Final', the Habs have already earned the right to be called champions 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
Love the Danault (and now, Caufield) tribute pizza slices - They've already won most persuasive impression of ultimate effort, execution and overcoming adversity/disdain/disrespect by a team in these playoffs. Now make your final argument for non-Superstar team superiority - Go Habs!
Yup, as a Hab fan, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I expected nothing this year, and I haven't been this pumped about the future talent in a long long time. Primeau, Fleury, Poehling, have yet to blossom, but Suzuki, Caufield, and Evans, should keep getting better. I was really bummed about Mete, but I wasn't surprised to lose him on waivers. It pains me to see Sergachev playing for TB, I thought the Habs would have learned their lesson after the Gomez for Ryan McDonah debacle, but apparently not.
dude OhNyquist.. thank you thank you. Someone finally says what I have been preaching since Caulfields draft......Yes Jack Hughes was helped bigtime playing with Cole. Hughes will be a good NHLer but go back and watch their tape in USDP....Caulfield will have the better career mark my words
Plus, Caufield has developed some serious chemistry with Suzuki (the guy is absolutely insane as a center and can score as well) and has playmaking abilities of his own. He's gonna be fine. If Hughes can find the "Cole Caufield" of the New Jersey Devils, then he'll fare well. If he doesn't... well, big loss.
When this draft happened I was working and told my coworkers "10 GMs will be kicking themselves when this kid gets to the NHL." I stand by that. Detroit should've taken him 6th, imo. In a re-draft he's top 5 for sure
@@Al_Andaloussi85 Fair point, I'll readily admit that I don't trust defensive prospects to pan out as consistently which is why I had said Detroit should take Caufield at the time. I also think that seider's play in Sweden warrants moving up if there was a re-draft as well
I’m a huge Habs fan and I’m old enough to have seen them win in 86’ (I was in grade 7) and again in 93’ during my first year of university. Caufield is just what the NHL needs right now. Many of the game’s superstars are beginning to age, today’s superstars haven’t been able to produce a good cup run. Cole is lighting it up right now and is in the Stanley Cup final. If they were to win and Cole scored the GWG in game 6 or 7, that would be epic. Shades of Patrick Kane in 2010. Best of luck to them.
@@krzyk101 Seider will be fine. He is more sound defensively at his age than anybody i have ever seen. Point wise he has improved offensively very much... He and Hronek will be amazing next season. The Calder will be between Seider, Caufield, Zegras, Turcotte.
@@bobbycooper2530 he’ll probably have a good season but the separator for me that puts Caufield ahead of Zegras and Seider is that Anaheim and Detroit don’t score, so it will be tough to produce on teams that already struggle to do so. And Caufield is in a much better situation

It would have been a lot of talent. But I like Broberg he’s gonna be a stud. Him and Bouchard will be amazing. I think Ken Holland did a good job. We got Dylan Holloway the next draft. He was playing with Caufield in Wisconsin. Both of them were the best on the team

I’ve watched my team my whole life and we have never been so stacked with talent in my lifetime. Ken Holland will make something work. He’s pretty good at his job
It absolutely is very important, it is not the only and sole factor though, should the player be extremely talented. Jagr wasn't the most skilled player ever to have played. He was very good, but was likely strongest forward to have ever played and that, coupled with his longevity lead him to be second in points all time. Chara isn't the most talented D-man, he was and is strong, coupled with a good reach, his talents alone would absolutely not suffice for NHL level. Martin St. Louis would never make it to the NHL had he not been one of the most talented players in his generation. Had he been as strong and could play for as long as Jagr, he would compete for the spot of the "Great one". Very strong player with above average talent does well, very weak player with above average talent does not do well, it has to be supported by an astounding, god given talent. In other words, strength, speed and height, is just one of the many important aspects that make for a good player. Should one excel in many, but like in few, he can still be doing great.
Canadiens have faith youth will continue to grow in playoff spotlight When you’re as young as Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, every day represents an opportunity. Part of the reason why the Montreal Canadiens have managed to play into the summer is the life those players have brought to the lineup, and the way they’ve been able to grow through challenges during this extended playoff run. The Stanley Cup Final arrived with the biggest challenge yet: A regular matchup with the Nikita Kucherov-Brayden Point-Ondrej Palat line, at least for the games here at Amalie Arena where Lightning head coach Jon Cooper controls last change.
Nope.. After watching tons of footage.. I concluded, and I'm being proven right, that Caufield inflated Hughes stat line.. People laughed at me. I'm laughing now.
People kept talking about how Hughes inflated Caufield's stats... but they forgot that Caufield inflated Hughes's as well. And Caufield has already been playing at the NHL level with Suzuki and the other Habs and have done well for themselves. He's developed great chemistry with Suzuki. They are going to be dangerous in the future...
That was a great long, cross ice pass on the last goal but he actually made the play for himself with the chip, his quickness (as opposed to flat out speed) and his control of body and puck. Suzuki not really a vet yet, yet he's made the most sweet passes to Caulfield for his goals. Caufield is hockey mature beyond his years already, just as Suzuki has been. Whatever limitations both of these short, and shorter, fellas have in their physical stature, strength and/or skill set, they seem to be rapidly approaching NHL upper level robust in their head. I'm impressed by that...pity some folks aren't.
As a Bruins fan, Canadians v. Islanders is pretty cool. I'm going with Montreal in 6. Wish it was B's v. Habs. I hope Boston has the possibility of facing Montreal for all the marbles again.
Also to remember that Anaheim kept Zegras limited to only a certain number of games to have leverage for future contract negotiation. Next year he will no doubt be a Full timer that iIm sure will be in the running for Calder.

@@iem123 what's interesting is they look roughly different year to year in the playoffs, maybe why they loose is because the players they trade/signaround the core need more then a season or half a season to gain the chemistry. Look at Muzzin his first year with the leafs was meh, then after he's become one of our best stable defensemen
@@Icy_Cards Could be... but then Matthews and Marner turn in a zero? They've been finding chemistry for a few years now. I really feel let down by those two in particular - but now the pressure will be enormous for them next year - course, $10M they deserve to have pressure.
@@douggilmour2704 Honestly, Marner and Mattews playoff stats are not that bad, (off year here and there) check em out on hockey reference, you'll see some pretty ok- to great stats on there.
As a flyers fan it hurt me when they passed up on him to watch him go as the very next pick
Not a fan of Yameron Cork?
Same here
@washed_out_ I don't think you should be surprised the Flyers passed up on Cole Caufield.
We needed help on defense.the little I saw of york was promising.i think it didn't make sense for the flyers
@@magicwanddd not that much anymore.i think we had more of a need at defense and that was it. Konecny, Morgan frost etc
Size doesn’t matter anymore, the boys rejoice
Also I really wanted the Sabres to take him but then Cozens was there and I was happy with him
he's the best natural sniper we had since Stéphane Richer, Pacioretty had to be fed but Caulfield is just at the right place every time, a true goalscorer
This story really does remind me of the comeback story of the Los Angeles Kings in their cup to glory after being down 3-0 in the first round to San Jose.
They went on to win the Cup and Tyler Toffoli was part of that run as well. Good memories of that here in Long Beach, Los Angeles.
So true.

Yes he went first, but Kane's size was always mentioned in general before the NHL...
Goes to show that they should never overlook a player because of their size! I’m happy to see smaller players thrive in the NHL!
He's got quick feet. Guy moves like a bunny rabbit. That move he pulled going around McNabb was a thing of beauty and finesse. With skills like that at 20, it's only going to get better.
I wish Detroit would have taken him but Yzerman looks like a genious and Seider is the real deal after getting Defenseman of the year in the Del

I would also have Cozens, Byram, and Turcotte in the conversation
@@jonahfossay740 Turcotte hasn’t played an NHL game yet so he’s still a question mark. Didn’t really light up the AHL this season.

What is your Discord? I can’t seem to find it, unless it’s just a private one which I understand
It is semi private, its for channel members. I felt like it would be to chaotic if it was public
Ok yeah I understand that
Stanley Cup Playoff pressure? What's that, asks Caufield. Caufield played with supreme confidence in the Vegas series.
Caufield is great..
BUT, I'm still happy with the Red Wings picking Seider at 6. I can't wait to watch his entire career. 100% getting his jersey
Great video. Agree with everything you said. It’s be nice if you took a look at what the players picked above him did this year for comparison.
Some haven't played yet. Too soon to say they were stupid. I know you said it but still don't know until years pass. So far he's a stud!
Now I am hungry for Pizza!
Oh and yes, Caufield is quickly becoming a favourite in our household. Great player with a great attitude!
H|e reminds me so much of Yvan Cournoyer, it's scarey.
seems like smaller and more dynamic will be the way to go these days lol
Caulfield looking good but I'm still very happy to have zegras
If Suzuki keeps on feeding him like he does, don't be surprised if Goal ends up winning the Rocket.
This kid is truly special.
Yes, It's all about the powertrainING of the Suzuki to combust his engine as hot as the engine of a rocket.
The Habs have never really been afraid to draft small. Henri Richard was also 5'7, as was Yvan Cournoyer. They would have drafted Denis Savard, if they hadn't been able to resist drafting instead "the Habs draft pick no Habs fan will utter".
Different time though. Back in those days anyone over 180 pounds was a power forward lol
Wickenheiser...there I said it.
Gm Grundman was influenced by Lafleur’s request for a Large Centerman

i’m happy with the panthers pick, i can’t wait for him to play for us😏
I'm a Leafs fan and I'm glad the Habs are doing so well.
@@highdadd6526 Sergachev and Mcdonaugh were essentially given away for free. Drouin's days in Montreal are over.

Caufield has so much potential! Definitely someone to look out for in the future.
dude OhNyquist.. thank you thank you.
If he doesn't... well, big loss.
theve pulled off 3 straight upsets
Yeah I’m going to wait until at least 50% of the players in front of him actually get a chance before I crown Caufield.
When this draft happened I was working and told my coworkers "10 GMs will be kicking themselves when this kid gets to the NHL." I stand by that. Detroit should've taken him 6th, imo. In a re-draft he's top 5 for sure
Seider is the REAL deal he is elite and Detroit badly need elite Dman
@@Al_Andaloussi85 Fair point, I'll readily admit that I don't trust defensive prospects to pan out as consistently which is why I had said Detroit should take Caufield at the time. I also think that seider's play in Sweden warrants moving up if there was a re-draft as well
I’m a huge Habs fan and I’m old enough to have seen them win in 86’ (I was in grade 7) and again in 93’ during my first year of university. This has been a great run thus far and Cole has looked amazing. The sky is the limit for that kid. It appears Tampa is too much for them with over 25 million in salary difference between the two teams. But that’s okay, it’s still been an exciting ride. Go Habs
Was really hoping the Avs snagged him at #16! Newhook's great too. But Caufield is ripping it up.
I know you mentioned it briefly but man the Debrincat & Caufield comparison is eerily similar. Both American right handed shots who are good on both ends of the ice, Both highly skilled short guys who were criticized for playing with better players (McDavid, Strome ; Hughes, Turcotte)
If he was just a few inches taller, he'd be going in the top 3 guaranteed.

I wanted Philly to draft Cole sooooooo badly and they took Cam York, not going to lie I was pissed. I remember when Debrincat was being drafted and we had two chances to draft him and chose not to, as well....
Habs wanted Cam York at first but since you guys took him they went with Caufield instead
@@AKmumu what a decision, that was, for Montreal.
@@AKmumu Nah .. no way. Habs had Caufield on their radar big time. They took him out to supper before the draft and Bergevin is good friends with his agent Patrick Brisson. They were hoping both Florida and Philly would pass on Caufield and when they did, Habs jumped on him.
@@flyersfanatic9053 TVGSW is wrong. Habs would have taken Caufield ahead of York. They had him in their sights after he slipped out of the Top 10 and they were thrilled when he was still there at # 15.

I wonder when we will finally accept size isn’t very important anymore. Perfetti from the last draft is another great example
Debrincat in Chicago is another great example
Brayden point
Debrincat is a great example too
@@janchovanec8624 the fuck are you talking about, did you just put height next to speed and strength while talking about talent?😂
Canadiens have faith youth will continue to grow in playoff spotlight
When you’re as young as Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, every day represents an opportunity.
I would love to have Caufield in my team but I’m still glad my Oilers drafted Philip Broberg. That kid is something special.
you just wait till Mo Seider comes over and becomes a super consistent top 4 defenseman 😤🥲

Half of the top 15 played together in the development program. Insane
I had wish Jim Benning would of picked Cole Caulfield...But I have yet to see podkolzin play
Yeah a lot of people overlook the difference between the NA leagues and the KHL. Podkolzin’s been playing with men the whole time there.
How is he making gems look stupid ? Because he’s playing with veterans that makes plays for him he hasn’t even played a whole season
Suzuki is a veteran ur right... also Toffoli is a CANUCKS reject... he is making both of them better as are they
That was a great long, cross ice pass on the last goal but he actually made the play for himself with the chip, his quickness (as opposed to flat out speed) and his control of body and puck.
