I refuse to believe it was actually a thing of any use. Lets say you did "block" an attack the force from the blow would likely cut deep into your hand.
@@Hello-fo4ez You didn't do it to block blows. You did it to precisely control your blade (longer blades) as you went in for a stabbing strike. I know this because of Skallagrim, a guy with a channel on RUclips. Check him out if you want to see it demonstrated and shown in the ancient, illustrated manuals from the time period. [/nerd]
Grabbing the blade of a sword is a real thing that was pretty common. It's called halfswording, and would allow the wielder to have better control of their swords. Some swords were even dulled in spots where holding the blade was important to the techniques used.
@@Metalclown22 Yeah, but it still wouldn't cut you if you didn't have gloves on. You can try it with a normal knife to see how just holding the edge doesn't cut your hand
yeah tom i know is a smart dude but the half swording thing is real. you are suposed to hold the blade in half swording (granted youd have a glove or armor or some shit when doing it) but still
5:55 Gripping the blade was part of fighting with some long swords and was used for different attacks, parrying, or blocking incoming attacks, and could actually be useful in combat. It looks stupid because they're not wearing gloves or gauntlets, and also because they're talking about combat like they were there storming Constantinople, plus they're chonkmeisters arguing about who might beat who with a sword when they'd gas out in 30 seconds trying to spar totally unarmed.
FYI, the technique is known as half swording, and it was more or less used to deliver more accurate and powerful thrusts, in an attempt to punch through weak spots in plate mail, or in between the plates like the armpit and such. It was sometimes even seen depicted using the pommel and grip as a bludgeon, because again, armor is strong. If memory serves, it was never depicted as a technique for parrying in the ancient combat manuscripts. Even in modern HEMA, that is more often than not an absurd idea, and puts the person half swording in order to party, at a monumental disadvantage.
Not to be that nerd but half swording (grabbing the blade) is a real technique in medieval manuscripts. That how dudes with huge 2 handed swords would fight in an enclosed space like a hallway. You can squeeze a blade and not cut yourself as long as you don’t slide your hand along the edge, especially with gloves.
It’s annoying that Cody is acting like he doesn’t know what a POV tiktok is. I don’t go on tiktok and somehow I know that. Cody does literal videos ABOUT those kinds of tiktok s and he’s acting like he doesn’t know
Swordsmen would [typically] use half-sword techniques if they were wearing armored gloves, which would allow them to grasp a sword blade that way. Gut hang notwithstanding.
Not really, leather gloves would be sufficient and in many cases, with a good grip it can be done without gloves as well. Sometimes swords would also be left less sharp for the purpose of half-swording.

I know I’m gonna sound like those sword nerds in the video but I actually practice so here’s my take, I’m not an instructor but I’m fairly sure I could kill that first guy if he tried that move (I doubt you’d even need training to kill these two) Let’s imagine the first guy is facing you head on (pov of the camera for instance) let’s also assume you are right handed, a high guard like that will block you guessed it attacks from above, so you attack from above..if he was going to complete that move the thing to do would be to shift his feet and do the same movement on the other side, this will push the blade aside to stab at the face like he’s planning. Unfortunately he’s done it at the wrong side, so if you imagine the sword coming down from the top right of the screen and hitting his blade as he goes into Ox you’ve actually got a real good chance of stabbing through his throat or face before he can even stab you, combine this with a step to the side (right) and you’d be completely safe Now guy number two was somewhat of an idea in his video, the first movement he performs in blocking at high guard is possible by pushing the sword either upwards but that would open him to attack from below if his enemy twirled the sword around and down to strike his elbow. Where his technique could be fully realised perhaps is if he closed the distance at that instant, once the sword is touching his, charge in loop around him and put the blade to his neck in a choke hold, if you are quick and maybe try to destabilise him with your foot you could maybe take him to the floor which would make that movement the first guy tried useless. Again I’m no expert his is what I’d attempt on this situation, the first guy was right in saying the flow of combat really isn’t that simple, for example, the side stepping, he’s forgetting the angle and direction of the swings, which maybe he didn’t consider because he doesn’t have a partner with him
