Are MCQs in Competitive Exams BAD for students?

- As any student in India would tell you, exams are an integral part of our education system. Whether it’s the midterms in our school, entrance exams to colleges and universities, or competitive exams for jobs, Indians have to be ready for exams every step of the way. In recent times, more and more of these exams are adopting the MCQ format. While some say that this makes the assessment process inexpensive and takes less time, others say the format limits the holistic development of any student. But the real answer is not quite so straightforward, with multiple factors to consider, all of which we discuss in this video.

Agreed he forget about negative marking
mcq's are more tougher than subjective question because if your answer is wrong you will get -1 negative marking but in subjective question if the answer is wrong and some part is correct then you will get some marks
I agree
Yes 💯 i agree But creative thinking and writing it down isn't there much it's bad 😕
Hey bro, I would say that subjective exams r equally as imp as objective because they both have pros n cons, there should be 2 exams taking place, 1 ob n 1 sub, they should add -ve marking to sub exams too.
I guess mcqs are the best
1) Person who doesn't have a good handwriting or can't write cursive will have nothing to fear.
2) Many student who have natural good handwriting always gets an unfair advantage which isn't correct because exams are about knowledge not beauty.
3) You have a single answer it can be either correct or wrong, so the teacher can't show partiality when he/she is in bad mood while checking the paper.

I am a NEET aspirant and i think tukka lagana don't really matter much bcoz in order to get a medical college i have to do more than 85% questions correctly and random guess will never gonna work in that situation. So in this case i think mcq's are a good option also timing is a big factor we have to solve every question under a minute. This makes it even more difficult and actually if u watch those videos u will see them clarifying the consequences of tukka. Also good teachers don't teach that they teach to make calculated guess .
Also NEET has all conceptual subjects so mcq format is easy to test the preperation.

good luck. just an advice , do not exhaust yourself so much with neet ug that you either start feeling lack of break in 1st yr and get overwhelmed , or become so free that you fail the finals in 1st yr.

For Subjects like English and Social studies subjective test might be better but for science and maths objective tests do the job pretty well
i might be factually wrong but i establish my opinion that we cant draw diagrams in science mcq's {ex. in optics, biology}
@@simonpeter4563 that will be good news for students especially me and also how is it useful in your job?? We can have diagram based mcq question instead of drawing diagrams
@@simonpeter4563 in real u don't need to draw diagrams, u just need to identify that diagram is about and MCQ are the best as in this aspects

@@simonpeter4563 I think it's quite easy to make students draw the diagram for a chapter like optics by giving the question in the form of words (it's hard to visualise but once you draw it on a piece of paper the question gets simplified by quite a bit).
For Biology, you can always ask students to correctly name and state the functions of a given organ/gland etc by drawing a diagram and pointing to one.
This ensures that students study the entire subject even in an MCQ format.

Students who have given JEE advanced, really love the MCQs(single answer correct) so much, it's really a relief sometimes.
JEE advanced really have the tricks of its own, like the MSQs(multiple correct options), numerical answer, match the following with multiple correct answers. Also with -2 negative marking is a nighmare if you are not thoroughly prepared. Following are the probabiliy of Tukkas (flukes) getting correct:
1. MCQs: 1/4
2. Integer(0-9): 1/10
3. MSQs: 1/15 (4 options)
4. Numerical type(includes decimal): 1/Infinity ~ 0
Edit: Neither the paper pattern nor the total marks or marks distribution are not known beforehand , which makes this exam one of the most exciting exams in the world.

It's there for film institute exams also. Their it's 80 theory:20 mcq. Cuz their people need theory and practical knowledge.
JEE-Advanced is altogether on different league because in that exam One or more options can be correct, in some questions no option is available, you have to put integer or numerical value. But for sure it doesn't tell the interest of students. A student might be a MCQ-Solver but he has to manage three subjects at age of 17-19 and he might end up loosing interest in two and hence loosing the exam rank. But we don't have other option for entrance of IITs.

Example-We are asked to describe the nature of poet from the best option given below but the options were too similar and our teachers used both these words to describe the poet so we were in a dilemma and it gave a lot of pressure at that time
I absolutely agree with you in this case. MCQs for English was a nightmare considering it used to be the easiest when exams were subjective type but the MCQ in English didn't work as you were supposed to guess titles of an unseen paragraph or an article which can be different and each student has different understanding of literature . But in the case of science it was very convenient.
You missed a very important point, about negative marking, which is the solution so that students avoid guessing (tukka) is MCQ pattern.
Taking one of the most popular competitive exams of India like JEE MAIN and NEET, each one of them have -1 on the wrong answer entered, and a similar pattern is observed in CUET
Talking about the IIT Entrance Test, i.e. JEE Advanced, that is something on a whole new level, not just because of its difficulty level but of its unique pattern as it contains MCQ's, matrix match, matching, stem based ques., matching, more than one correct etc.
JEE ADVANCED Laughing in the corner😂💀
In jee advance there are certain questions in which more than one option may be correct sometimes all options are correct too, Creativity and deep understanding of concepts is very crucial for this exam specifically. Questions on factual points are very less in this exam as compared to others. And yeah its one of the toughest exam eligible students have to face. (Cutoff marks were 5 marks for each subject this year that's just 4% marks 💀)

And also teachers give multiple concepts beforehand which you are supposed to discover and your job was only to use those concepts which you learn by solving 1000s of problems.
This is the problem with coaching, the spoofeeding nature.
As far as jee advance is concerned, exam has become very tough and they ask wide varity if topic with not much depth. Even a genuins like ramanujan will struggle to crack the exam where's a non genius but 4 year coached can crack it.

I feel JEE Advanced method of using mcqs is really mind blowing and awesome
Like in 2022 JEE Advanced
It had three sections in paper 1
2 were mcq
One was numeric type with upto 2 decimal place
Numeric had +3 for correct one 0 for incorrect
Then single correct questions had +3,-1 scheme but the options were damn well placed
Then the best ones
Multi Correct Questions
+4, - 2
So basically let's say one question has 4 options so one option could be correct or might be 2 correct or 3 correct or all 4 could be correct
Wrong answer = - 2
So this makes guessing impossible
That's why you have jee mains tukka trick but no jee advanced tukka trick 😂😂

Short answer : Yes
Long answer : Yes but with a healthy mixture of both Mcqs with negative marking and Subjective types
The thing is, MCQs are seen as easier form of assessment than subjective by the students, cuz of the different trick videos and most importantly, mostly, teachers spend minimal to no time on mcq tests (so that they can point out mistakes) as the results are calculated by computers and sometimes in schools students of other classes are asked to check the mcq papers. But nationally, it can be seen as asking students to learn to solve questions of some particular patterns which they are going to anyway forget by the first year of their college.
Every option in multiple correct option, jee advanced, is a question in itself 😅
The idea that MCQ papers do not determine the conceptual clarity was right on the mark. For jobs like teaching, this is especially the case. Many of us label some of our teachers as "boring" because we simply fail to understand what they are teaching. That doesn't mean that the teacher doesn't have any knowledge. It simply means that they do have knowledge they just don't know how to impart it. And this is where MCQ papers fail to evaluate the most important aspect of teaching. Covering more syllabus isn't the same as understanding the whole syllabus.
Whosoever thinks that mcqs can't check conceptual clarity, I just want to tell them ek baar JEE Advanced ka koi bhi paper utha lo (especially the one or more than one correct option wala section with - 2 negative marking). Sab pata lag jayega. 🙂

There's one more thing - the point you said about marks mindset is very important. I gave mcq exams for my 1st term in CBSE but actually I had not gone deep into understanding instead just briefly read.
In exams mind can remember the answer if gets a glimpse of it but in writing you must have grasped it because many a times we feel that "I had learnt it but cannot remember it right now". And I think that is important even though it has it's own advantages.
3:55 your sense of humor is great Mohank 😁
Hard question tha lekin ye 🌝
From 2022 batch of MBBS, NMC has introduced a new type of syllabus or curriculum that will help them in cracking NExT, which is MCQ based problem solving questions. It is of the same pattern as USMLE, UKMLE, AMC, etc. and will replace NEET PG, FMGE and the respective final year MBBS university examinations in India. This will greatly reduce partiality and bias shown by professors when correcting subjective type questions that include long essays, short answers, etc. Not everyone will have the handwriting or writing skills that will satisfy all the examiners and thus resulting in loss of marks even for correct answers. It is a big loss of time for the students to try revaluation as its only possible through a High Court case against their university and the same bias can happen again.
Every time, many students file case in the court for getting revaluation for their failed papers. Revaluation results are always late and this in turn prevents the students from preparing for the upcoming exams properly. This system must change in India.
In the case of MBBS yearly exams, I totally agree with having it replaced with MCQs for the future batches as there will less bias or partiality as well as human errors. MCQs will test their clinical knowledge and problem solving skills for patient treatment rather than their memory power for mugging up big essays.
Agreed

Some points to notice...
The real story and play and politics involved in NEET can be understood by a passed out student.
Pros - in an MCQ pattern exam, you would see that per question time is around 1 min.
1. MCQ pattern can really boost a students' ability to solve a question within a specific time.
2. MCQ pattern exams created the need for students and teachers to create short cuts for long questions. Some short tricks are really helpful as they enhance concept (for example - solving the question with reference to accelerating body).
3. MCQ pattern exams remove partiality which is a very important factor. Every student knows that subjective exams me partiality hoti hai. Teachers give more marks to fav students and fail the students they dislike.
4. MCQ pattern wale questions me multiple concepts ek saath apply ho sakte hai.
5. Security bahut zyada hai MCQ me. Especially when the exam is of national level
Cons
1. It's too much of a mental pressure to sit in a MCQ based exam. A student has to complete the paper within time, bubble every answer correctly at the right place, and make different strategies. So hardwork is required.
2. Students lose the ability of thinking. If a new type of question comes, it becomes difficult even for top students to deal with it.
3. Language of questions in MCQ based exams is sometimes too difficult making the answer ambiguous. This creates confusion and pressure in a students' mind
🙌
Ohh my gosh
How do you choose such unique topics every time
Just too good
When I took NID entrance test in 2019, which used to have OMR sheet for MCQs, I was amazed to see that there was no OMR sheet . They had changed the questioning style of the test. The question paper had some MCQs but it was mostly subjective and I enjoyed answering them in my own words.
In theory descriptive paper is far better bcz it tests the candidate in wide range. But practically in country like India where millions of people sit for a single examination, MCQ format is best with negative marking bcz it ends partiality done by copy checkers in descriptive exams. Yes to minimise tukka culture in MCQ format there needs to be at least 0.5 negative marks instead of 0.25 or 1/3 marks for wrong answers when 1 marks is given for right answers
Mcq is most acceptable... Mcq based qus ans also increase our thought process and also increase to find some new path
Interesting! Thanks for sharing it ✌️

1. tukka does not work in jee advanced thats for sure.
2.written exams are the worst. You get judged on your writing skills, handwriting skills which are bullshit parameters to judge.
3. Marks are in teachers hand who can not be trusted to judge everyone equally
End of discussion MCQ are better than written exams
As someone who has given a few professional software certification exams, I can say with confidence that good MCQs can be constructed which demand and demonstrate analytical thinking and deep understanding. Usually the question has multiple paragraphs, and/or a diagram and has more marks than simpler questions.
There are also progressive scoring exams wherein the questions get tougher or easier if you successively answer the previous ones right or wrong, respectively. That is something you should have covered in this video.
For example, tests for advanced certifications in Oracle database, Offensive Security (ethical hacking) are both hard and progressive. They also run for many hours or even days.
The problem really is with paper format MCQs for large populations (rejection tests) conducted over the same 2-3 hour timespan. That is where the weaknesses of the format are amplified.
A+ Level informative video ❤️
What a topic! I think no one youtubers has discussed about this topic.
PGIMER chandigarh, for postgraduate entrance for MD AND MS earlier conducted exams based on mcq. But it had 5 options and the answer was not restricted to one option rather multiple options could have been correct response, same way none of the option could be correct. It was one of the best form of mcq based tests.
For exam like jee mains and advanced mcq format is best as the options are designed in a way that there is a very less chance of guess and in jee each questions can be solved in many ways so it will be hard to judge the methods by a person
I have been solving mcqs since 6 years now. 2 years preparation and 4 years graduation. We used to had our question paper in mcqs forms only. Yes mcqs pattern while in graduation did prepare me for the competitive exams ahead but as people say that "tukka hi toh marna hota hai" it does't work probably and with negative marking it's nearly impossible, one has to learn every detail of a topic because the question can be from anywhere, not like subjective question papers where questions do get repeated many times and students get instructed about some important questions already. Yes it does help in assessing deep knowledge but it has some disadvantages too, we are not able to think and write creatively.
Hi Mohak,
I love your videos on the diverse topics. Keep it up mate!
BTW, what's the name of the film whose cut-scenes you've been showing in between this videos? Seems like a good one and I got to watch it. :)
I am glad someone made a videos on these.
I feel the subjective answers toggle a fair more value than MCQs.
I remember during school days my teachers congratulated me, they felt so proud of me giving an extra effort in making every answer, every argument a quality one, having richness in its narrative.
As such I always wished to know and touch every aspect of the topic. I loved learning.
When I was introduced to 11th , the teachers would simply teach in a way considering that the students have already learnt the topic in the 'coaching' and they were right!
75 percent of the class was in JEE / NEET Coachings and rest followed lately. For me , I had a rough patch initially but still I tried to adjust.
In The subject of CS, since it was not a JEE subject , almost my entire class failed. Not me though, I got 46/50.
The point is that I got that I am going to deal with an imperfect model of education.
My boards were then, pretty fine. But in JEE, ofcourse, it backfired.
I appreciate the concept behind MCQ, the percentile system.
But I feel , I am not a product in a bulk batch, supposed to be 'filtered' in an exam. I saw exams as a way to align the students with their learning. Not to just throw almost all of them.
Anyways, I still know and I am trying to carve out valuable solutions I can give in for the society. I never wished for IITs for placements, I sought them for learning. But you know.
I will learn, I will create great solutions, maybe I will also go to IIT as well. They are a gem there's no doubt 🌻❤️
Very articulated comment indeed, wholeheartedly agree with you!
Mcq's are lot better than subjective, where we have to fkin cram learn the whole thing .
For example business studies that book used to give me anxiety when I would open it . And being left with no option I have to read each paragraph lot of times to learn the stuff for subjective exams .
But if the test was objective I just had to understand the concept and didn't read a single para fkin 100 times .
If I got lost by any word the options in mcqs makes me remind that hard word .
I like it how you make very relevant videos to India's current scenario.
Sahi kaha bhai ♥️
MCQ test can be best for an exam like neet which is given by 18 lakh students and this gives a level ground for students who have knowledge but cannot make answer sheet presentable
And error in checking copies can be minimised
JEE Advanced was initially subjective only, but due to more number of students giving JEE Advanced they changed thier pattern, but still less number of people are able to solve those questions
This year in JEE Advanced Paper 1, only 5/18 questions were solved by more than 10% students that too only 1/18 by 29% (highest) (in mathematics)
Let's see!
This is actually such a good evaluation, never even though out these points.
The problem is not having mcqs in entrance tests. The problem is having negative marking, very less amount of time to solve those questions, and having more than 1,2,3 options correct in the paper which makes it very very difficult. Also conducting one single paper consisting of many subjects on one single day for a couple hours instead of having seperate paper for seperate subject and having one single test performance determine your college. That is what makes entrance tests a big headache. 🙁
Also your status quo determining your performance. The materials required for these exams are expensive, you definitely need to join a coaching which we all know are insanely expensive, cater only towards the needs of high ranking students and don't really care about the average sincere middle class kid. And lastly, a very vast , long syllabus. Which requires you to memorize insane amounts of ridiculous data + have a deep understanding of concepts that other countries have in their undergraduate course in college. Along with this study to get good marks for your boards as well.
It's not like this cycle of work stops when you enter college. Then you have internships + activities + grades. It is all very tiring.
This bro. I gave agniveer exam for airforce. We got only 25 minutes for 30 questions in raga section. Maths section required lot of time to calculate we wasn't possible. People who knew short cut would solve it easily whereas maths is weak for me
No they do not conduct a single paper in a day they conduct 3 and 2 of them on the same day (9 a.m. - 12 noon and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.)
😉
I am a History Student , completed my graduation from Delhi University this year. I appeared for CUET PG for M.A. History this year, but it was more like a SSC CGL exam MCQ paper. As you know History can be interpreted in many ways, & so the answers might be more than 1 for the same question... It's never clear like 2+2=4 ... it's never in social sciences, not in History as well. There is high probability that a student who mug ups very well becomes topper. For Masters Level there should be written exam, so that depth of knowledge can be checked.
For Msc I feel MCQ is better
Hand written becomes a major problem for students who work really hard on the subject but fail to keep the good standards in hand writing. In my opinion MCQs are better, i am a literature student and a lot students get good marks only because their hand writing was good and they had written more paragraphs(only shitty and non sense). Girls usually get advantage in written exams compared to boys.
Really Nice topic picked up to think upon
Kaafi informative,
As a student it has enhanced my knowledge about exam(s)
Terminologies are good to learn.
💕🙏
NEET students only understand the pain of MCQ 😭
A simple MCQ is bad but an MCQ with more than one correct option is nice 👍
MCQ with negative marking is also a good option
I think in subject like Mathematics and Physics there are multiple ways for solving one question but in exams like JEE(especially jee mains) the time allotted for one question is very less and this is why students tend to learn the quickest methods or "tricks" to solve the questions taught by their teachers. As a jee aspirant I can say, this may guarantee a seat in NIT but *ahem* IIT, not so sure man! There is a section called multiple choice question and you have no idea that whether one option is correct or two or three or all of them and don't even forget the fact that questions in jee advance are never repeated they are super unpredictable from the format of the question to total marks of the paper.
There should be two stages like UPSC- MCQ for Screening and Subjective as second stage. So that we can get best of both world.

I have given and cleared multiple MCQ exams till now. These exams hardly test anything beyond the basics. Subjective exams will always be better suited to test the actual ability of the students. However, for filtering through a large number of students, the best system IMO is that of JEE Advanced, where the candidates have to do multiple types of questions, single correct MCQ, multiple correct MCQ, fill in the blanks and integer type questions. These can be checked easily via computers, and overcome some of the disadvantages of MCQs elegantly.
Was a really interesting video, i have been a watching videos of this channel for almost a year, the recently uploaded ones didn't intrigued me much but this one was very engaging! :-P
Wah Mohak keep going ☄️
In my admission exams, I mostly underperformed on those exams which were MCQ-based. I did comparatively well on written-based exams.
MCQ system in school was introduced because the amount of students passing increases. It can be seen that after introduction of objective questions, the passing students have increased and also it eases the work of examiner.
Teacher bache ka naam dek kr marks hi degi ya kate gi tho pass hi ho ge na log
Love the way you described it 😍😍
i think practical and oral based exams should happen more at school level which can keep all things at check such as thought process, creativity and understanding of the students. Although this is not possible in competitive exams but if all of this happens till class 12th, students will be actually free from rote learning and have a clear understanding of all the topics which will shape up their mind in the right way instead of cramming up all the things
This should actually happen both at school-level & entrance level exams. Practical exams are often hard since you actually have to operate things on your own. They also give you marks based on your handling technique & if you're getting proper results or not. Both filtering & assessment of the students can be seen here. Tho yes there are chances of partiality by teachers too so this is why in entrances company people themselves should examine the exams here.
GOOD CHOICE OF VIDEO SIR👍
Finally someone understood the pain of competitive aspirants
Competitive exams in India will always be painful because of our population and our criminally underfunded education system. Getting a good degree in India consists of washing away many sins of your past lives.
Perfect timing 🧡💚
Love ur content always useful
This is such a unique topic on which no one ever thought about but u described it so beautifully. Last yr class 12 students appeared mid term in mcq mode and literally we faced these problems but no one raised voice for us.
Thank you so much mohak and team ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dude ever seen the next level creativity of jee mains and advanced .
In advanced you will literally find clear theory question turned into next level MCQ.
Also More than one correct option in the question with partial marking makes those questions better than normal theory or MCQ question while keeping the charm of theory questions.
Bro are you on twitter !?
Sir in you videos, animation are always engaging and impresive, which video animation software you use to create visual presentation, and how much you pays for stock footage if paid.
multiple-choice question (MCQ) is composed of two parts: a stem that identifies the question or problem, and a set of alternatives or possible answers that contain a key that is the best answer to the question, and a number of distractors that are plausible but incorrect answers to the question....
I think mohak should makes more longer videos even if it takes 1.5 - 2 weeks
It feels too short
But good choice of video😊
Great analysis
Mohak bhaiya I am a jee aspirant believe me , yeh tukke kabhi paper mein laghi nahi sakte it's just a gamble, why because the options are tricky in itself, and it is right that everyone gets equal opportunity to score in such exams irrespective of representation, long theory descriptive and good handwriting 😇😇 and mcqs are the best, and one more thing thanks for the fantastic videos you are giving , this is the real viral content which the Indian youth needs , hatts off to you bhaiya🙏
This is only my perspective of mcq which I know thanks for the other perspective 🙏
Whatever exam it is, if you don't study you will be in trouble while giving answers. 🥱 Simple theory- Study, Understand the concepts, make notes, revise them and practice as much as you can 🥱 and don't forget doing exercises and eating healthy food and sleeping properly.
Maybe I think MCQ is good like we can have test like you said filtration will be done nd then creativity will be applied when the person is going to that field (example i have given neet got marks then I will take mbbs nd then i have to write theory nd etc by all the 5 year course) so I think it's a good decision yeah it's have a cons also but as you said nothing is perfect ✨
But will have to give neet again after 5 yrs...it's a vicious cycle
Also most medical colleges in UP are now taking MCQ based professional exams
I am in IIT Madras and just wanted to say all people who say mcq exams are easy just solve JEE Advanced paper once , you will understand the difficuilty
Exactly
Such a nice video 👌
Mohak: Professors say MCQ can not be used creatively...
JEE Adavanced Professors: (Hold my paper.)
Learn from UPSC to set "good" questions 😂
Well researched
LOVE YOU BRO.....
❤❤❤
