Thank you for watching! What do you think of my new elegant geckos (Stenodactylus sthenodactylus)?! I love them! They have so much personality and I find it so cool that they dig little tunnels and burrows everywhere! Feeding them is also very entertaining as they are quite active little hunters in a small package! Don't forget to answer today's Q of the D and thank you to Exo Terra for sponsoring today's video!
My wife and I had a few of these guys, they were great. They're quirky, vocal little fellows. If they thought their misting was late, they would come out and chirp until I sprayed. Also, if you spook one, it'll actually run around the cage screaming! They can also be really sociable. One of our three would climb onto your hand if you offered it.
Definitely lion king theme the pride rock and for a Uromastyx or a bearded dragon. That would be a cool desert terrarium. Love the vid Dion have a great day.
Omg! I would take that substrate to make a tortoise playground for my Russian tortoise, Luka. He loves to climb, and his enclosure is in need of a refresh to keep him entertained.
I love the stone desert for sculpting arid designs! I have a 18x18x18 that I I set up using this substrate but I haven’t found the perfect gecko for it yet! I’d love a frog eyed/ wonder gecko but I can’t find any captive bred here in the US

You’re such an awesome pet owner and I don’t think I could say that enough! You’ve got a new fan 🙋🏾♀️…. And a new Patron 😄 Btw, the layout of your new enclosure looks amazing! Well done! 😊
Can you comment to the longevity of this technique ? Would there be a chance it would eventually crumble or does it harden enough it becomes stone like? Remaining sturdy? Does misting have any affect on it?
From my experience with this exact sand and technique it becomes very stone like and doesnt crumble if you make sure to use enough of the wet substrate to secure things like shelves to make them secure
I used zoo med excavator clay to kind of glue a stack of rocks to make a ramp and after a couple months it did come loose and only doing some medium misting here and there. So I would be afraid to stack something so high with clay. I would have probably stuck the rocks with pond foam and then pack the clay around that. Unless there is something different with the exoterra clay
Great enclosure build! As for the QOTD, your build inspired me. I would take that substrate and mix it up into clay to make a couple of caverns for my Uromastyx. He is just a baby now but when he is ready for his adult enclosure I have a plan to use that Stone Desert substrate in the build because it is so versatile. Thanks for the inspiration!
I would make a "cliff" wall with a cave or two for my Rankins Dragon! 😍 I really like the look of this set up. The dry grass was genius. Also adorable geckos, I look forward to learning more about them through your videos!
Love these guys. Aside from their small size, I love that these guys are communal and don't exhibit the same sort of territorial aggression you can get with larger geckos. I would love to see some long term updates on this as I always wonder how well the clay will hold up. As for what I'd build with the Exo Terra stone desert, I'd probably build something similar to what I have for my Hemidactylus imbricatus, but as with their setup, I would probably still use an epoxy putty to provide the main structure and support with a outer layer of stone desert.
So excited for this video!! I've had my eye on Pachydactylus fasciatus, the Thick-Toe Banded Gecko. I've got an enclosure set up and waiting, I just haven't yet found the time to welcome a new animal into my life!

Wow, what a cool enclosure. I love the way you used the clay to build up the stones. I don’t know anything about clay so I was wondering if it will dry, crumble and get too soft to stay in place. Or does it harden well? I’m sure I should know this as clay is used to make things like bowls, etc., but those are fired as part of the process. Just wondering. I’m totally going to have to get some of that Stone Desert mix to make an awesome enclosure for my leopard geckos and my bearded dragons. I may even use some similarly to what you’ve done for my mourning geckos so they have more ledges and basking and hiding areas. I bet I could even come up with a way to use some of it to make my bahaman anoles an awesome enclosure and just add more tropical plants and decor to help them feel more comfortable and give them lots of climbing surfaces and small nooks to hide in. Favorite video so far! You have totally step your game up so proud of you and so happy for you and the new habitants! I did this exact thing in a 40 gallon exo Terra a year ago and amazingly, to this day it’s still as awesome.. if not better than the day it was built for my leopard gecko Harley. I mixed the red Australian colored stone with the tan orchid one you used. Thank you for this awesome video
Thank you so much! So happy you enjoyed the video! That’s great to hear! I’m really happy to know your setup or build has held up for a year! Cool! Never thought to mix them! That must look great! Thanks for watching 😊🙏🏼!
The grass in the clay - substrate is brilliant. My enclosures for my leopard geckos are a bit short in length but they are in great shape front opening what do you think about a "secure" second level with a textured ramp for grip? Each level will have a height of 15cm
They are incredible!! Stunning eyes!! So fun! Congratulations Dayyan!! I put a mix with the Outback red into my female beardies enclosure, she loves it! Your build is awesome! Love that layout!! QOTD: my beardies enclosure! She’s got areas to dig, and I’ve built her other enrichment areas with it too! Love that stuff!
Mashallah the intro music 🎶🤣🤣🤣👌 your build is absolutely beautiful! I'm inspired. Thank you for explaining and showing your process so clearly for us novices.
So happy you made this video. I've been wanting to get elegant sand geckos for a few months now and this video has definitely inspired me to start building an enclosure for them!
I love what you did with the dried grass 👌🏽! I was wondering, Is impaction something you are not worried about with these guys and the substrate? Love the video! First time watcher, definitely looking into more of your videos
Finally hahaha!! Love the setup bro I definitely need to set something similar up for mine. Glad you're enjoying keeping them they're truly a rewarding species!!
FYI, just an idea when it comes to decorating… When it comes to the backdrop, if you make the mixture a little more moist than normal, after you press the mixture into the backdrop, you could take the sand mixture you’re using (or any other, in a variety of colors, even blue & yellow to simulate the sky & sun) & press those into the still wet backdrop. As it’s a mixture that has clay, so long as it has enough moisture to still be mailable, anything you press into it should adhere & become a permanent fixture once dried. You could even use little pebbles, colored stones, gems, crystals, etc. to jazz things up. Just thought I would mention that in case you ever wanted to utilize what you already have to make an even more unique backdrop. And remember, anything that can go into (grasses, light branches, stones, sand, etc.) the mixture, supporting its weight (and obviously is animal safe) you can use to give even more depth & creativity to your enclosures. I’m betting the animals would love the visual stimulation, as well. Much love to you, sweetie! *hugs* Shelbie xo 😘🥰
I love the tiny geckos. They're adorable! The enclosure is really awesome and you did an excellent job making it. It was a joy to watch come together. All the best to the new friends in their new home!
Honestly would try this substrate in and aquarium, not sure how well it would hold underwater so I'd do a little testing but would love to see plecos using it to excavate there own caves
Gah! Their so freaking cute! I really needed a video like this today. I like Exo Terra enclosures too. As long of you have overhead heat. The glass on the bottom can't handle under tank heaters because it cracks. I had two that happened to. The enclosure set up is dope! I bet they're so happy with their new home.
Wow, the enclosure looks great man! Really awesome work! Did you have to do anything to the twigs and grass that you collected to prep it for the enclosure. Or is it safe to put in right from outside?
I’ve never even heard of these geckos, they’re gorgeous. Their personality reminds me of my little western banded gecko who looks like a micro leopard gecko. Edit: the Sonoran stone desert is so cool I live in the Sonoran desert. Edit 2: QOTD: I would 100% make an enclosure with little burrows and some native succulents for my western banded gecko when she gets bigger she’s smaller than a newborn crestie right now. So she’s on paper towel so I can monitor her growth better.
I have a Texas banded gecko, I can certainly vouche for their wonderful personalities! Her inquisitive attitude is definitely seen in these little dune geckos too
@@thechickenwizard8172 I feel like banded geckos are criminally underrated, they’re so lovely and funny. Also really beautiful 😍 I don’t think a lot of people are working on captive breeding with them but I’d love to see them more
Always wonderful to see others working with coleonyx! I have a roughly three year old female and she is just splendid, easily my favorite gecko to work with. Every evening or night that I enter her room she's up watching me either waiting for food or just seeing what I'm up to, for such a small gecko her curious and bold nature is truly hard to miss! Although I currently only have one in the future I would love to work with more and even breed them, for such wonderful lizards their underrepresentation in herpetoculture stuns me! Thankfully it does seem like at least western and central american's are beginning to catch on though!
The enclosure looks super amazing! Great job! As for the question of the day, I would mix the substrate with water to make clay and use it to add a bit more background to my crested geckos enclosure.
Fantastic enclosure! You really made that look like a slice of paradise for these geckos. The new substrate looks neat, I may try some for my peters banded skinks when I redo their enclosure.
Ok I’ve been researching the best ways to make a background for my leopard gecko, this substrate seems like the perfect thing to use!! I’m going to order some now!
Awesome build 👍 & the new Elegant Geckos are beautiful 😍 That substrate is amazing, I would mould some caves with connecting tunnel for my leopard gecko 🦎😁
I have been wanting the stenodactylus for a while, now I have so much ideas for their enclosure. Have a 60×40×40 terrarium available soon for them, hope I can get them at a local shop when I have the terrarium empty.
Wonderful! Hope you can find some! I’ve had the hardest time finding anymore! I wanted a larger group in a larger terrarium but unfortunately I could only find two so I went with this smaller size
Hmm, the Enclosure looks nice, but also too small for a pair of those. Are you going to seperate them after breeding? It really doesnt look like the female could escape the male, in this small space enough, so i would double the lengh of the terrarium or build another enclosure to seperate them outside their breeding season.
I love the geckos, substrate, scape, and the idea of using the substrate as a clay! Also I’d probably make like a rattlesnake enclosure with the red colour, with caves and hills and dead bushes. Great video!
I would probably use the substrate to create a rocky landscape for either ackie or a Varanus glauerti. Great video and really fun to see a new species. Have never heard of it before😁
Omg Dayyan that’s amazing!! I’m actually in the works to get a 3.3 group of Stenodactylus petrii for breeding. I already have one enclosure setup but I’m still playing around with it but I’m getting 3 more enclosures for them. 2 more enclosures for the adults and then another enclosure for the babies and to raise them up in.
@@Reptiliatus you’re welcome haha. Oh absolutely! This species is absolutely amazing and the coloration and pattern is absolutely beautiful. This video also gives me inspiration and more ideas on how to setup the enclosures and get everything ready before I get the geckos.
Hey got a question,i have a pair of leopard geckos and i pair them and the male bleed and i think is from his male part but is not sticking out... what is the problem if you know...
With the desert substrate I would make a sort of "plain" landscape for a spadefoot toad since the species that lives here in Portugal is normally spoted in beachy/sandy landscapes
Luv the set up. The elegant geckos a beautiful. I would like to make a bearded dragon enclosure I think it would work out well. Do u have a video on an bearded dragon enclosure?
@@Reptiliatus I’ve got one very lucky male and three females 😂 They haven’t reproduced yet but I do hear a lot of mating noises at night. They sound a little bit like crickets chirping 😄 I keep one corner of the enclosure quite humid with some sphagnum moss just in case they do lay eggs. And with regards to the beetles, they get along great, there’s no aggression whatsoever but the beetles are too busy mating to care about their surroundings anyway. Man, they never stop 😂 Your enclosure looks fantastic, you really do have a knack for building things 👍🏼☺️
Looks great bro, I think you did amazing job! Question to ask in your opinion do you think way you did your background with that type of substrate, you think it could go well with beard dragon?
Congratulations on your new breeding pair, they're beautiful! I love your build too! QOTD: I'd make a uromastyx enclosure or a chuckwalla enclosure. Chuckwallas are too cute!
Such a gorgeous build! Thank you for sharing with us. I debated about using this medium when building my tank for my Leo but got discouraged after reading some reviews about potential cracking when the clay dries. My worry would be ensuring all the terrarium elements are stable enough with the dry clay to avoid hurting the animals. Seeing that you built this 5 months ago, from today's comment, have you noticed the stability of the clay diminish?
If I was to use this sub straight, I would only use the new animals, geckos, that you have. I would be fearful of impaction. I do love the enclosure and can't wait for an update on these gorgeous little creatures.
I wonder if I could use this to make a background for my snakes enclosure? I don’t think it would be safe . Cute geckos and enclosure I really love the natural look ❤️
Quite possibly! You’d just want to make sure the background is maybe also supported by branches, etc that are silicones to the wall that help as an anchor
Wow I found this video at a great time, I just picked up a pair of similar geckos (Stenodactylus Petrii/Egyptian Sand Geckos) and I never knew about this substrate. Definitely going to grab some of it! A question, I've been using sand in my temp enclosure and I find that dubias and various worms don't burrow in to it (unlike dirt), have you seen any feeders trying to burrow in to this substrate?
Awesome! Nah, the feeders will really struggle to. Especially if you wet it and hardened it to that clay form. If it’s loose out of the bag, they can dig but if you wet it and it compacts and becomes hard, they really have to dig at it
QOTD: I think I’d do something similar to what you did, but I’d make a mound of slate rocks. Inside the mound of slate I’d set everything to create a ton of tunnels. Then fill in the outside gaps like you did. Then I’d probably throw in some organic substrate, plant some succulents and some desert grasses, and add a CUC. For the species I’d get viper geckos.
Very nice! Sounds like a really nice idea! I’m planning to maybe try something for my tarantulas next to give them a “starter burrow” and see what they do with it!
@@Reptiliatus Thanks for showing that exo terra substrate. Never heard of it before, and it's giving me some inspiration lol. Would love to "recreate" the grand canyon with it by mixing the colors. Awesome build!
@@Reptiliatus I would also like to ask if making a background with the desert stuff would be ok in higher humidity enclosures for crested geckos? Would the mixture rehydrate and crumble, or would it be sturdy?
With the grasses you picked, how do you make sure there is nothing bad for the animals on them. I’ve always been told never to get stuff from outside for my reptiles unless they are boiled or sanitized!
I have seen those geckos more in herping images rather than in keeping environments. From what they say, they are quite hardy and easy to keep and breed. You could get a larger group later on in a larger enclosure to see more interaction between the many members. It is said that this is possible with these geckos.
Hey, i love your video, I also have a question. I just made a diy terrarium out of a 75-gallon tank, but I didn't think about this until after i finished but will a reptisun uv penetrate the glass enough for crested gecko to be healthy? I really appreciate your videos
im looking at getting these geckos and came to watch your vid.. think id do the same thing you did with the dirt. im going to look for some today so i can do this haha
Hi! I have a bunch of projects I am busy working on along with some renovations so it'll be the green tree monitor setup coming first before the isopods update unfortunately.
@@Reptiliatus yeah, I’m debating on a fake rock background with grout and drylok while using your method of space utilization design or the excavator clay route 🤔 I must say tho, that e clay sure does look very natural as a substrate vs the 90%play-sand 10% eco mixed substrate… decisions decisions😭

This looks great! Your setups always look so naturalistic and beautiful! Would the exo terra stone desert be suitable for a leopard gecko?
Thank you so much! Absolutely! If you look up the product on RUclips you’ll see some fellow creators used it to setup enclosures for leopard geckos!
Mashallah the intro music 🎶🤣🤣🤣👌 your build is absolutely beautiful! I'm inspired. Thank you for explaining and showing your process so clearly for us novices.
Thank you so much 😊🎶👌🏼! I really appreciate the kind words 🙏🏼!
My female Stenodactylus stenodactylus just layed it's first egg today😍
wahoo! That's so exciting!
Wow! Congratulations 🎉🎉
Thanks buddy the lightning section of the video helped me out so much with the price of all of the setup😊!
Glad to hear it!
I love coleonyx species. I can’t keep them because I like in California though. I have a leopard gecko
The enclosure looks super amazing! Great job! As for the question of the day, I would mix the substrate with water to make clay and use it to add a bit more background to my crested geckos enclosure.
Love the mini’s🥰. I’m going to see if I can find some. Love your demonstration on building a home for them.
well done sir! I really like the brick laying method youve applied, definitely going to try that
Thank you so much! Took a long time but the result is great! 😊
Awesome! Hope it goes great!
Awesome build 👍 & the new Elegant Geckos are beautiful 😍 That substrate is amazing, I would mould some caves with connecting tunnel for my leopard gecko 🦎😁
Thank you so much! That’s a great idea! 🦎👌🏼
Awesome scape! I love the new geckos they are just beautiful 😍
Thank you very much 🙏🏼😊! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Hmm, the Enclosure looks nice, but also too small for a pair of those.
Are you going to seperate them after breeding? It really doesnt look like the female could escape the male, in this small space enough, so i would double the lengh of the terrarium or build another enclosure to seperate them outside their breeding season.
first i have to say that this is genius!
second, wich kind of stones do you use?
You brought me some good ideas, for new terrariums thank you.
The new geckos are adorable good addition!!! As always great content
Thank you very much Catrina!
Fab set-up Dayyan.....dream desert set up for me would be some kind of rattlesnake.....but I can dream 😂
That's a really awesome build I've used desert stone before and never thought to use it with water to make backgrounds. 😅
Great video as always. I would add and construct this stuff to my Uromastyx tank.
Awesome! Thank you! 🙏🏼
I wouldnt know where to start about being creative with it but I know watching your content has me really interested in getting another gecko one day
Thanks for the love! I’m sure you could make something great! 😊
I love the geckos, substrate, scape, and the idea of using the substrate as a clay! Also I’d probably make like a rattlesnake enclosure with the red colour, with caves and hills and dead bushes. Great video!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the positive feedback! Great idea 🐍✨!
Thanks so much! Oooo that’s so cool! That species is awesome! You should do it! More people need to work with/produce this genus! 😊👍🏼
@@Reptiliatus you’re welcome haha. Oh absolutely! This species is absolutely amazing and the coloration and pattern is absolutely beautiful. This video also gives me inspiration and more ideas on how to setup the enclosures and get everything ready before I get the geckos.
@@WitchersCreatures I’m so glad! You’re gonna do great things with those geckos! 😎
@@Reptiliatus thanks Dayyan! I’ll definitely send you pics of the enclosures and the geckos when I get them on IG
they kinda look similar to a species of gecko that i see here in dubai (Stenodactylus slevini) and (Cyrtopodion scabrum)
Hey got a question,i have a pair of leopard geckos and i pair them and the male bleed and i think is from his male part but is not sticking out... what is the problem if you know...
Finally some desert species!!!
😊👍🏼🏜
I love the enclosure looks great!!!
Thank you very much! 🙏🏼
Ohh I use that sand from exo terra for my banded skink!
Banded skinks are such a cool and docile species, would definitely recommend them!
So cool! Yes I really like the look of them too!
With the desert substrate I would make a sort of "plain" landscape for a spadefoot toad since the species that lives here in Portugal is normally spoted in beachy/sandy landscapes
Luv the set up. The elegant geckos a beautiful. I would like to make a bearded dragon enclosure
I think it would work out well. Do u have a video on an bearded dragon enclosure?
For for question I would build a terrarium like you did for the lizard but for camellion
Stunning enclosure for some stunning geckos 😊
Thank you so much! 😊🦎✨🙏🏼
I’ve got four of these little dudes, I keep them with my blue death feigning beetles. They truly are such fun to own 😍
That’s so cool! Have they produced for you at all? What is the sex ratio? Do they get along well? Thanks for sharing/watching!
This looks soooo cool! If I had that substrate I'd make a rad enclosure for a rosy boa.❤
I have 1 question about use of this substrate as, well, clay
Do you happen to know How many years can such wall stay strong?
If it’s loose out of the bag, they can dig but if you wet it and it compacts and becomes hard, they really have to dig at it
@@Reptiliatus perfect thanks!
@@Reptiliatusvery cool! Will you have it setup so you can view the inside of the borrow from outside of the enclosure?
It came out so great!!! I love it! I would love to use some of that to make a more natural scape for my leopard gecko!
Honestly I'd make an enclosure for a Leopard Gecko with that stuff.
Great idea! 😊🦎👍🏼
@@Reptiliatus You think of getting any Leopard Geckos?
Your geckos are so cute
I know! It's so wholesome! Imagine how small the babies will be if they breed! haha
They will be tiny
I love these geckos. Haven't been able to find any for sale near me though.
Thank you! I know! It’s unfortunately they aren’t too common yet!
@@Reptiliatus Thanks for showing that exo terra substrate. Never heard of it before, and it's giving me some inspiration lol. Would love to "recreate" the grand canyon with it by mixing the colors.
Awesome build!
@@mpk6664 my pleasure! Thanks for watching my video!
Big fan of they new geckos!
Thank you!
Those kinda remind me of Mediterranean house geckos ❤️ such a cool build! I love it!!
Haha nice. I can see some similarities 😊.Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
❤❤❤I love these little geckos!!! Where did you find them? So cute!! I love geckos of all shapes and sizes!
Been waiting for this video lol but I would definitely use the enclosure for some crested geckos
14:10 A bong. For a Tigger.
Hi, where is a Isopod Video where you show all your Isopods. And when is the green tree monitor enclosure build
Hi! I have a bunch of projects I am busy working on along with some renovations so it'll be the green tree monitor setup coming first before the isopods update unfortunately.
@@Reptiliatus ok nice
Just got two new one just because if this video!! Thanks pal !!
Awesome! You’re welcome!
Love you videos man but did you wash the rocks because you always inspire to love new animals and if I would ever get it I would love to know your opinion.😊
They were clean yes! That being said, it’s debatable how much you really need to worry about such things.
