I can’t believe this video doesn’t have more likes and views. This is more realistic and beautiful than 99% of the vids on RUclips. Most look like a bunch of foam pieces of similar size stacked in unnatural fashion. Thanks for sharing!
its weird to find this video from a random search while learning to model train detail, and then learn you are my actual hero in coaster design, my other and longstanding niche passion
It’s incredible how John is successful in pretty much everything he does. He retires and makes some models to keep him busy and ends up a RUclips channel with over a million total views of his videos
I have a nemesis themed shelf in my room full of merch ranging from 2018 to the future and i am going to make it look a bit like the valley and make lots of rock like this to theme it (i have made a very small prototype and it went well thanks john :))
Very nice I had been using the same tachnic for my modell railroad and for my rock crawler. This technic results not only a realistic rock face but also a light diorama that is very important too! Thank!
What are the chances hahaha. I am making a model Coaster for a hobby project for collage at the moment and was going to theme it with Rocky Spires and Buttes similar to big thunder mountain at Disneyland. I can actually say that the Greatest and most influential designer in the amusement industry and the planet has helped me with a hobby project for an extra half an A Level In my EPQ. This is why you are the greatest designer and a personal hero of mine. Keep up the Amazing work and enjoy your "retirement" until another project arises. You've inspired me to fall in love with the amusement industry from as far back as I can Physically remember visiting Alton towers and asking to go as a Christmas and birthday present every year. Thanks John you truly are a Legend.
I have a model of a small attraction built in Cleethorpes but sadly it was completely destroyed by rain and wind after someone left it outside. I would love to fix it up properly
30-50mm is the easiest to find and most common. I’m not sure where you find big chunks like this But you can glue several layers of 50mm foam and build it up as high as you need. Just use wood glue and large toothpicks to lock the layers together ready for carving. Look for local builders merchants you just need XPS foam, they always sell it a lot cheaper than online hobby stores .
Hi John as the model is in the garage the cold weather has stoped me working on it. I’ve built a large extension so when weather improves I can crack on. I’ll have you over for a running session. Best wishes.

Brilliant 👍👍
What is the filler, plaster?
Very helpful. THANK YOU!
I have seen several similar tutorials, but none with this fine of detail. I am hoping to use this technique to make a reptile hide.
Great way to do these,do you let the washes dry between coats?
No need to let them dry fully, as the plaster soaks up the surface moisture
What kind did filler do you cover the surface with?
Haven't tried it but a very loose plaster mix just might do the trick. I'm going to try that...
Stunning! Subscribed.
fad tips shared liked loved !
Could you please list of all the colors that you used step by step?
Love it. Thanks
I have a model of a small attraction built in Cleethorpes but sadly it was completely destroyed by rain and wind after someone left it outside.
I would love to fix it up properly
Could you get these results with expanding spray foam? I’m planning on trying this to keep the weight down on my 3D seascape work. Thanks in advance …
Where can I buy Foam Blocks of this size?? struggling to find some!

Great Tip John, did you develop that method by Accident ? 🤣😂🤣😂 👍
Ha ha! Very quick of you Colin! How are your models coming along? 😉
Hi John as the model is in the garage the cold weather has stoped me working on it. I’ve built a large extension so when weather improves I can crack on. I’ll have you over for a running session. Best wishes.
What kind of filler are you using?
I use an all-purpose ready-mixed filler (the kind for exterior and interior use) available from the paint department of your store.
