You're absolutely right but you forgot one factor: calibration. Most people are not actually hitting the ball where they think they are. To prove this just try to smash one ball into another with some good speed like billiards with the balls just a few feet apart. Most people miss by quite a lot at first because they're not actually hitting or sending the ball where they think they are. Practice smashing ball into ball quickly, without much thinking, and you'll quickly become quite good at it. You can do this at home or on the putting green, and you'll calibrate your aim. Then putting becomes like shooting a gun from the hip where you instinctively know where the ball will go.
