This film was shown to screenwriters at Paramount Studios in the late 40s as an example of a "perfect screenplay."

wendy hiller is the same actress who played eliza doolittle in 'pygmalion'
if she had been born 30 years later she would have been a rock singer, a la janis joplin.

I love these Powell & Pressburger films esp. with Roger Livesey. How come they don't make them like that anymore?

I would venture to surmise that the chief reason is that Powell, Pressburger and Livesey are all dead....and have been more many years.

Because no one in Hollywood reflects the class seen in Powell & Pressburger Films

If you have a hankering for more Wendy - RUclips has her first film 'Pygmalion' on free viewing. I like it better than My Fair Lady!

Wendy gave us so many great performances ! And she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1958's "Separate Tables" !

Totally agree with you - the musical doesn't improve on the play- and especially doesn't improve on the movie with Wendy...

Another peculiar film from the late Forties and full of twists and turns. I do wish they would stop saying Kiloran in the way they do. I know its vital to the plot but it sounds annoying

In that era, adults could appear quite a bit older than they were due to hair styles and modes of dress, and mannerisms. That said, Wendy Hill looks far more her age when making this film, 35 years old, than 25. In the major kickoff scene at the club, when it is announced that her character is 25, I nearly fell off my chair. Not 25. Not even 35. She appears to be a woman in her late 40s or older. In All About Eve, Bette Davis was playing a woman soon to be 40 years of age. Davis was 42 at the time. Wendy Hill's acting can be marvelous, but by no stretch of imaginative fantasy could her character be perceived as a 25 year old Miss.
