Tips for trolling vs drifting?
Thanks ‘chovy. Can’t wait to get out on my first Hali trip ever. Gonna use these tips to hooefully catch one.
I think it’s gonna be later in the year. Too much fresh water and temperature hasn’t warmed up yet. Maybe May and June the halibut will show up in numbers
I use to go fishing there at oyster point nice place to fish especially on a hot day! I haven't gone fishing for a long time now! Thanks for the tips. Take care and be careful! May God Bless All Of Us And Have A Blessed Great Lovely Wonderful Sunday!!!!!
Great Video, I like the tips. Very informative great time, great friends and great memories! Always a blast hanging with this group!
Hey there! Awesome vid and information. When does the season start and run till?
The season for California halibut is year-round. However, most people target them from April to October.
Question how do I rig up a jerkbait to troll the bottom for halibut? Thanks for your time
Sorry, I wouldn't know. I don't usually use jerk baits for halibut. Maybe try a high and low rig and jig it as your drift. I would think that would work.
@@TheLostAnchovy gotta experiment! Thanks uncle!
Use a three way rig like normal just tie a jerk bait at the end of the leader instead of a hook. Troll like normal, the weight bouncing on the bottom will also give the jerk bait action
Awesome Video!
Thanks!
For tip 2 what is the turn of the tide and end of the tide? What time is that usually?
I heard Thuy say 40”-er on the radio! It can be done! Great day out in the bay and thank you for all the awesomely entertaining and educational videos 🤙🏾
It was a great day. Thanks
They is so lucky. I have to try op.
Go go it could be your day
I was out there a couple of weeks ago and caught a 24" keeper. I can't wait to go back out there.
I hope you get one!! Good luck 🍀
@@TheLostAnchovy Thank you!! 🙏🏼
Awesome tips, Chovy. Thanks for sharing. I never limit halibuts before. I have a feeling it's gonna happen this year. Let's go😉
Just follow those tips. Go when the tides are slow and steady in the bay. Focus on them when the bite turns on and keep working a productive area. You will get your limit soon enough.
Hey Mr. TLA. Many thanks for your quality videos, with so many teaching moments. I'm wary of eating fish in SF Bay. Granted it's much cleaner that 10-20 years ago, but Oyster Point is, well, kinda a back bay with not much aggressive circulation. Do you eat fish you take there?
I generally just fish the bay for fun. If I eat a fish there it is in very limited quantity, like 1 a year. I mainly get my butts from the ocean.
Tks for the propro tips!
Haha I’m giving away all my good tips. What will I have left for future videos?? Haha
@@TheLostAnchovy you can now just film us catching big fishes! LOL 🤣🤣🤣
@@a17dyjai Sorry Andy, I'm already in a circus, and i work with at least two very nice clowns. hahaha I think you may know them!
@@TheLostAnchovy 🤣🤣🤣🐵🙈🙉🙊🐒
Beautiful video full of real vital information on Halibut fishing. You commented near the end of the video to Thuy " I hate you". Don't hate Brother, always elate.
Haha it’s just me poking fun at thuy. He knows I have nothing but love for him.
Another important tip you forgot to mention was the size of the tides! Halibut typically hunker down when there are big tides! They are much more active on smaller tides and I have caught many many halibut throughout some tides entirely because of small tides.. small tides don’t consist of strong current which allow the halibut to move more freely and not having to fight the current in search of food!… but I love the videos brother! keep them coming!
Thanks I agree. Good point 👍
How bout fishing in Monterey
Monterey it’s best to go when the squid 🦑 arrive in Monterey
Lol. Our video are almost identical brother. Great information Chovy and s always great video.
My patent attorney is working on a cease and Desist letter to you. Haha it is coming your way
@@TheLostAnchovy lol. My video uploaded first brother. That is what my lawyer told me. 😜
Thanks for sharing the halibut tips TLA. Definitely gonna head out there soon. It's still early, I'm sure the "Butt King" 👑 will be passed around all year.
I’m not worried I have a few locations I will use when I want to drop the hammer down on these guys. Haha my crown 👑 is secure hehe
Good stuff, heading there next week with friends. I told you the halibut would win the tourney. lol
Go go it’s a good spot for early season. No guarantee yet but you will get some action
Another great video Keith, fun and very informative. I’m just getting into kayak fishing after watching all these yak videos on RUclips, complete newbie. Do you think oyster point would be a safe enough spot for a rookie to get out there. I’m itching to get out but just a little nervous
Yah oyster point can get sketchy around 12-1 pm but as long as you stay near shore you will be ok. Just need to check the forecast and stay don’t kayak in double digit wind. I say 3-7mph wind is good for a beginner. Try ARW it’s a good and safe place too since the wind will blow you back to the launch. Good luck 🍀
Why no dodger? Is that the result of trial and error where running naked performed best?
My preference is always to keep my tackle simple. It’s more about finding the fish. Some times having a dodger helps but most times it just tangles and gets in my way.
Thanks for the great video! When you say to fish the ledges, do you generally troll along the shallow part of the ledge, the sloped part, or the deeper part? I'd imagine it's not ok to spend time trolling inside the channel for main traffic...
Yeah pro best to not troll inside those boating channels. Just fish outside them and you will be ok
Any additional tips for catching halibut from shore/pier? I'm a few hours away and want to maximize my chances since I can only go maybe a couple of times a year.
Never tried hali before but heard it's delicious? 🤤
I would try candlestick pier in the early spring and into the summer. Bring a cast net or a sabiki tipped with shrimp to catch live shiner perch. Send the shiners out and wait for a bite. That is what I did early on before I got into kayak fishing. Good luck 👍
@@TheLostAnchovy thank you!
I just go out at toss swim baits and drop shot just so I can cover ground.
Keith, I didn’t see you talk about gear used. What kinda rod action, power, and length is good, any particular type of reel?
I normally use a trevela or a qifishing rod and an avet. Works well for most fishing around here. Some fish you will need different rods tho.
was that you at alameda rock wall last saturday?
Sorry that was not me. I haven’t fished the rock wall this year yet
@@TheLostAnchovy I've been to alameda rock wall twice this year and haven't had any bites. I'm starting to think oyster point is a better location. And probably its too early in season as well
@@skull465 ARW isn’t happening yet. It will get going in a month or so. may and early June that place goes off.
I'm supposed to go crabbing at bodega bay this weekend. Do you think there could be halibut there since there is already halibut at oyster point? Or am I wasting my time looking for halibut?
They are there but you need to go further out. Probably not with the time right now
Tfti
I have no idea if and when i am going out!
Hey, what about hook sizes sir? Thanks
Just make sure the hook fits the bait. Mine is probably 4/0
