If there is a Queen of Rock & Roll, it’s gotta be Tina Turner. Nobody sang like her, nobody could command the stage the way she did, in a industry that seems so obsessed the “sex sells” approach, her sexuality felt like it was tied the music she sang, so effortless. Her recording career goes as far back as the late 50s. She was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee 1939. Ike Turner (who is credited for penning the first rock and roll song with Rocket 88) discovered her in the late 50s and her first hit with him was A Fool in Love, 1960. Her heavy voice was the attraction. With a record deal, Ike changed Anna's name to Tina Turner, named after Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, and named the act The Ike and Tina Turner Revue, featuring the Kings of Rhythm and The Ikettes. They had several singles through the 60s, but after an appearance on The Big T.N.T. Show, Phil Spector sought to record a single with Tina (without Ike's production) River Deep - Mountain High in 1966. Sadly the single didn't really chart, but did open doors for Ike and Tina to open for The Rolling Stones. Their popularity increased, thanks to Tina's dynamic stage presence. They covered several rock numbers such as Come Together by The Beatles, Honky Tonk Women by The Rolling Stones and most famously Proud Mary by Creedence Clearwater Revival, their biggest hit. They would also appear in The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter movie and the album Workin' Together would become a best seller. Tina began writing her own songs as the 1970s progressed, including Nutbush City Limits (a semi-autobiographical song) Sweet Rhode Island Red and Sexy Ida. Her star was growing beyond Ike as she appeared in the film adaptation of The Who's Tommy, portraying The Acid Queen. She would also release her own studio albums, including a rendition of Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. Unfortunately things were not well between Ike and Tina and Ike's domestic abuse has sadly overshadowed many aspects of Tina's career. She left him in 1976, divorcing him and settling to keep nothing but her name. After years of struggling to make a name for herself, success came with her 1984 album Private Dancer, which featured songs such as Can't Stand the Rain, Better Be Good to Me, the Title Track by Mark Knopfler, 1984 by David Bowie, and her number 1 song, What's Love Got to Do with It (written by long-time collaborator Terry Britten and Graham Lyle). Tina became the the oldest solo female artist to top the billboard charts. She headlined sell-out tours, especially in Europe where she would make a home. In 1985, she co-starred with Mel Gibson in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome playing the role of Aunty Entity. She would also contribute the song We Don't Need Another Hero with Terry Britten. She would also perform at Live Aid with Mick Jagger. Private Dancer was followed in 1986 by Break Every Rule, featuring the single Typical Male and Back Where You Started. Foreign Affair came next in 1989, featuring the smash hit The Best. A 1993 Oscar Nominated Biopic, What's Love Got to Do with It, was released staring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. But Tina herself would contribute another song to The 1995 James Bond 007 film GoldenEye (starring Pierce Brosnan). Tina's final solo album, Twenty Four Seven, would be released in 1999. On May 24, 2023, Turner died at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland at the age of 83, having suffered multiple illnesses throughout her life. Her memory was honored by countless peers, musicians and celebrities.

As a young 13/14 years, I saw for the 1st time Tina (Ike and Tina Turner Revue) on the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1974 on late night TV show singing rock songs like Honky Tonk Woman, Come Together, Nutbush City Limit and Proud Mary, in high heel shoes and rip dress, grabbing and swinging the microphone left and right and running (dancing) around the stage like a mad woman, just like any rockers singers of the days. I was so impress by her presence on stage that for me, here is a real rock 'n ' roll woman. Later in my life, I had the opportunity to see the Queen of Rock 'n" Roll live in late 1980s, still showing off her legs, grabbing that microphone left and right, never stop moving around the stage without missing any note (no lips singing either), a truly great performer with her band and her back up singers. You are going to be miss. We loved you. R.I.P. Tina.

I have to admit that I feel a genuine sense of dread when listening to the songs that Tina did with Ike, knowing how horrible and abusive he was towards her. Even if she and Ike did some great songs together, I find it hard to look past their real life troubles and end up feeling sad about what poor Tina went through during that time. Thankfully, she went on to have an amazing solo career after this. I absolutely love Goldeneye, it's one of my favorite Bond themes.

Lennon praised "River deep mountain high" and its production, he said something like "a guy that can produce a tune like that can do whatever he wants" in an interview.

My Dear JT, you described our lovely TINA as she is THE ONLY QUEEN OF ROCK AND ROLL. It is true, it is like she is been forever with us, I can't stop crying looking at her videos. I remember when I was growing up listening rock I thought "that's a singer who doesn't need any special effects, only her presence. Thanks JT for your tribute. R.I.P. my dear dear TINA. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Great tribute! I would also include her cover of Back Where You Started off the Break Every Rule album, at least as a bo us track. Cranked up with a bit of bass boost, a VERY solid rocker.

It’s such a shame that Ike and Tina’s relationship overshadows Tina’s career and music so often, she was incredibly talented. And I’ll tell ya, she really is the acid queen!

The lineup on the Tommy film version of The Acid Queen is actually John Entwistle, Nicky Hopkins (piano), Ronnie Wood (guitar), Kenney Jones (drums) with additional keyboards by Pete Townshend. It's still pretty impressive though, half The Who and half of The Faces.

I’m debating whether or not it would be cool to have a Rush Playlist. Sure, you’d have to leave out long adventurous tunes (2112, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, Xanadu, etc.) But they do have tons of shorter songs that would work well in a playlist, but maybe still a playlist of their work would still be missing something.

I haven't seen it in a long time - I'm not sure I want to, it's tough to watch, though I admire both Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne as actors.

Thanks for these recommendations. Again I please beg your pardon for a query. During the Ike & Tina years, I see Tina has 3-4 solo writing credits and roughly 15 co-writing credits. In her solo career, however, I note just a single co-writing credit. Why the disparity? Were her co-writing credits with Ike a ruse (a la Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett) for tax or other financial reasons; or were they genuine? And if the latter, why just the one co-writing credit after Ike (particularly given her dire straits before Private Dancer but also that, all else aside, writers tend not to stop writing)? Thanks again.

Phil Spector's said that any of the Ikettes could have been Tina. What a foolish remark,. Also his use of backing singers on "River Deep" mars the studio version. The live versions are better.
