Enjoy your Panasonic review & photography as art...like to read your opinion which MFT Gx/G or any Lumix (w/15mm or?) is close to the Fuji x100F, latest version . I understand the leaf shutter sync with all speed advantage with Fuji ...I am get used to the menus & use of the Panasonic (gh2/3 user) thanks!
I dont usually comment on photography videos without correcting something thats been said, but in this case I just want to say I watch alot of your camera reviews and you are by far the best solo reviewer out there. Video quality is top notch, audio is spot on and the amount of information given is excellent. Keep it up!
I love your camera reviews. They're an insight on how you work and real world use cases which are relevant to us. I bought my RX100 m3 because of you and I couldn't be happier/ I'm glad Panasonic has created this camera, but the RX100 is just fantastic with minimum fuss.
Solid review Ted!! Thanks for sharing! Great value in a small package - seeing it next to the RX100 V really put things into perspective. As a brand, all the way from this camera to the GH5, I'm really beginning to feel like Panasonic's become a brand focused on delivering features at a decent value... which is pleasantly refreshing when the other brands have made me feel like every new feature comes at a premium.
I bought this camera for my RUclips channel (different account) about a week ago, and I was a little apprehensive because you hadn't done a review on it yet. I've really been surprised at the quality, and love that I can pair it with my 20mm 1.7 lens for videos. Thanks for the review, it was a confirmation that I made the right decision! I love your reviews and trust your opinion more than any other videographer on RUclips!
nice review, this is an upgrade from the GM 1. if you're not into 4k, and the flip screen the GM 1 (if you can find one) is fantastic. I used it as a travel camera, shot raw (over 3000 photos) and I was not disappointed, it was awesome. having that much power in a little palm size camera is great. Your review makes me happy to keep what I have because I'm 95% into photos. thank you.
I sold my GX85 for this GX850 and I absolutely love it. It is a pocket-able, fast-operating camera for just $450 (grey)! Very happy with IQ / 4K/ 1080p60 in good light however low light IQ is poor. GX85 was also poor. It's all about trade-offs and compromises and in scheme of things I am very happy with this GX850.
With my GX7, GX85 and G9 I find that they often underexpose compared to what I want, not overexpose. I usually shoot with aperture priority and about half the time I use one plus third of a stop exposure compensation. Excellent review. Thanks.
I have the G85 that I shoot with Leica 12-15-25-42.5 primes. It's been quite the amazing surprise. The color rendition of Lumix cameras have definitely come of age, drastically more punchy than the gx8 even. Considering that the output is based on the platform of the g85, I noticed that it also does meter a bit "hot" as you so mentioned. I've also noticed that the highlight recovery on the RAW files has been perhaps quite pleasing as the rolloffs are quite smooth and you can indeed recover a drastic amount of highlights even when I compare this to my Fullframe D750 which tends to favour shadow detail over highlight details. Trust the raws ;)
Thanks for the detailed review. I've been telling myself "I need to watch a tutorial or 3 & play with my camera more." I've been saying this for years. The wait is over! This is definitely a bit of a tutorial. Thank you. I've always been a shutterbug and bought my 1st SLR which I loved, a $250 used Canon AE1 with a straight 50mm and I think twas a 70-200mm zoom, I'm sure. Of the 200 part, and, of course, a used bag in 1998 to shoot my passion back then, motorsports. And stuff that looks cool. Specifically road racing. I've become quite the love music addict and have had one issue a lot, I cannot remember what the specs are when it happens, but it is at indoor concerts, blues/rock venues, typical max capacity of 300. Yes, I first saw Samantha Fish at my hometown Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival in 2013. 27 shows later, I'm still a fan.😱😋. (You might want to check her out, and I've loved watching her progression, seeing how much better she's gotten in 7 years. Something about playing 250 shows a year does that, "I guess." In fact, I bought this camera at our candy land, B&H in NYC a few days after I drove through an icy blizzard Annapolis MD to visit my eldest brother who's an amazing chef and take him m to his first Samantha Fish show, my 23rd, in December of 2017. The problem is if I shoot multiple frames and I think I'm holding down the shutter to do so, the first pic has proper lighting, the second pic is really dark, the third pic has proper lighting, the 4th pic is really dark. Any idea as to the reason and how to avoid it? You know how it is, sometimes a tenth of a second makes a hell of a difference Ina shot. Thank you! (My D80's 3 FPS got too slow for me. I still owe it and am a lot better on it because it was a natural progression from a SLR to DLSR. I bought it because dad has always had a Nikon FG. My D80 has a 18-55, a 55-200, and a straight 50mm f1.4.) I just subscribed and pla on getting back into this passion instead of getting frustrated at every other concert I go to. That and take my camera out at least twice a week with a notebook to get better as I've never taken a photography class but always wanted to. (Of course the 1 photography class my CC offered was at the same time as the AutoCAD class I took to relearn it 9 yrs ago.🙄
I've been waiting for a camera like this! I need my B camera to be the GX850! Before I go out and get one I will try it of course but with my GH4 as my A cam this would make a great B cam for my upcoming travel.
Alas, with the GH5 Panasonic said at the CES that they have no intention going to phase detection. They prefer to improve DFD. Maybe it's better on their flagship camera, and that will filter down over time
Great review. Great little camera. I have one that I use for stills. And it shoots in RAW. One frustration is that the 4K button is too close to the shutter button. It is too easy to accidentally switch into 4K burst mode which records one second of mp4 video. This mode is designed so you can go back and save the best frame from the video, but it does does not allow for capturing the image in RAW. Other than that, it is a great little camera that does a whole lot of things.
Great review. I'm scouting around for a light setup for use in making videos. The interchangeable lenses seem tempting but the lack of stabilization in-body makes me wanna go for your RX100V sparrow rig instead
Nice review, but you did not mention there is no manual control mode for video! The footage isn't bad, but many users would prefer to tweak shutter speed and iso values. Too bad, Panasonic didn't implement manual settings for video.
Just got this camera a few days ago :) shame that we can't get the all black version here in Australia. This is the best value camera currently available, coming in cheaper than the Sony RX100 III-V, yet packing a bigger sensor. I was initially hesitant because it didn't have an EVF, but I'm not a fan of their field sequential EVFs that they tend to implement on their smaller and rangefinder type cameras anyway. Thanks for your review in helping with the buying decision!
When the 5D Mark IV arrived it seemed everyone was complaining about the crop factor when shooting 4K. Now it seems everyone is no longer bothered by the small micro 4/3s sensors. (???) Since I went to full-frame I use it all the time, unless I'm forced to go back to the APS-C. But so far that hasn't happened, yet. BTW--> It may be time to change your furnace filter. :-)
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Nikon 1 J5... Looking at the numbers, it seems to be one of the best cameras for the price, but sometimes numbers lie.
It has 4/3" sensor, and m4/3 mount.... ;) The same 4/3" sensor has been used since 2009 when Olympus released E-1 DSLR. Mount just got changed from 4/3 to m4/3 (and it is btw same mount as Olympus OM-mount, but just smaller).
Always good reviews and perspective on this channel. Thank you. Not a fan of this camera. The kit lens is crap IMO. I mean it's average at best. IF you went with the RX100 M3 or M4, the lens is faster and eventhough there's a 1" sensor it is 20MP. Comparable photos. Now the Pany gives you the option to change lenses. However once you put a higher quality prime the price will go up fast and then you can start looking at a whole bunch of other smaller camera options. To each his own.
sir, what is the view cam you use to shoot this video ? I am viewing 1440p and its just unbelievable clean and clear … my god that looks just like ultra sharp video.. just like a pro photo shooting
Hi wonderful video. I have a question hope someone can help me out. I understand that you can only film 4k for 5 minutes but how about filming in 1080p? Is it still 5 minutes?
Love your reviews and all videos. Great job and very well done. Just a comment : I've seen that the EURO version is DMC-GX800 and with 12-32 kit, it cost 549€ ! Thanks a lot and Keep it up
I bought one; the size is amazingand the photo and video image is amazing. I have a GH4 and 5, so I won't use this for long stretches. That said, 5 minutes is really too short fir anything but travel or inside the car video on lightweight car mount.
I would love to see this compared to the new FZ80 by Panasonic. I know they are a different form factor and almost completely different technologies as one is a fixed lens and one Micro 4/3rds switchable lenses. Fixed LCD vs Swivel LCD. But are the features better or worse. Was the size an issue? Thanks for your review as it helps me to understand if this camera will fit my needs.
thank you for the video. should be good enought for my need. But i would like to know how it stands against the Yi M1? If it's possible for you to compare them for video, it would be extremly appreciated.
One of the problems with this series of camera has been the lack of a "M" or manual video mode. Does this one have it? The ability to set shutter speed, aperture, and ISO are super important! I have my doubts. Also, the model in Europe is called the GX800, not GF800.
Dixon Coup Sony A5100, because it's got a bigger APS-C sensor & faster phase detection auto focus, not to mention u can use Sony lens, which they have more of
I'm having the same issue. The Sony is 3 years old, it came out in 2014 and while I can't logically justify why that is a BAD thing when specs are what matter, I know a friend who has it and they constantly have WIFI issues with it, which is important to me. I'm actually interested in the Fujifilm X-A3 which has the APS-C larger sensor with 24 effective MP. It also has 77 focal points, whereas this Panasonic has 49, but still the Sony is untouchable here with 179. The Panasonic just has that really fun 4K photo option buuut with that ATROCIOUS battery life? And the 4K from what I've seen just drains it even faster. The best camera is the one you have with you, and if I have to carry a second battery idk if that makes it worth it? I hate buying 3 year old tech, but Sony seems tempting.
Can you shoot video in full manual mode? I read through the manual and it seems to imply that ISO sets to auto when shooting video in "creative" manual mode. That sounds like a big limitation for video.
Nice video. What Manuel controls does this camera have ? Like shutter speed for video or like other panasonic cameras cinelike d or any sharpness contrast color adjustments no one seems to mention this thank you. I also got the pansonic g7 for around the same price of this iam just trying to lighten my pack on long mountain bike rides lol.
thanks for all your videos that are very helpful. Im traveling often and i need a light and compact camera for street photografy for both photos and videos that can take sharp pictures and video in 1080 60p which camera you recommend Panasonic GX-800 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX80?
Hi i was excited for this until the limit on 4k 5 min recording.. can you recommend a camera that is mirrorless, has a flip screen, and can record way longer than 5 min on 4k? I would really love to know.
Unfortunately you don't mention the most problematic thing for video on this camera: There is NO way to shoot video at a specific f-stop, shutterspeed or ISO. The camera let's you make settings for all this... for example shutterspeed or f-stop, BUT once you press the record button and the video gets recorded, the camera simply films fully automatic in whatever setting it likes to. It ignores shutter, f-stop or ISO completely. This is a HUGE drawback in my opinion and makes it pretty much useless for any semi-professional video work. The only thing you CAN actually set is EV.... so you can over or underexpose... but you can't film at a specific f-stop, shutter or ISO. Simply not possible. Very bad move from Panasonic actually. And sad it's not mentioned in the video at all.
I've been using the GM1 as a backup video camera along with the GH4 for a few years. The lack of manual video modeling the GX850 makes it no deal for me. Sadly, Panasonic seems to have ditched the GM line, so it won't be easy to get a replacement in the future.
first of all ,great review .Also do you think this camera could be considered panasonic substitute to panasonic dmc-gm5? I was searching for something pocketable to have always with me but at the same time also versatile .I stumbled upon the panasonic gm5 but right now it is a two years old camera and I don't think it is worth it anymore.Do you think this would be a good choice ?
For such a price, here are countless options, and dozens of good ones. There is no one right pick. Also, it depends if you're only going to use it for vlogging or if you wish to take photos too...
Other reviews are saying this camera has no manual control in video including no M, A or S, so no way to set aperture or shutter speed or even to stop it.chanhimg exposure on its own during the video. Is this not the case???? It's not mentioned at all here.
Hi ! I'm having a really hard time making a decision between just getting a flagship phone to record my youtube videos or just sticking with my samsung s6 and buying a separate dedicated camera for my videos. I personally have no issues with my phone so the upgrade to a flagship phone isn't really too necessary. Just wondering whether the differences between the flagship phones right now and their cameras will be noticeable. Also.. is there any particular camera you'd recommend under 500 dollars? thanks in advance!
I'd like to know that too. I can either get a second hand GX85 or new GX850 unfortunately my car needing a new clutch has left me with a next to no budget for a video camera.
I ended up getting the GX85 as a B-camera. I don't vlog and I'm usually behind the camera. Photos and 4K videos, I'm getting from the camera are fantastic (Good enough for what I do)! But if this is going to be your main camera. I would save a few more pennies look into getting a used the G85 with Kit lens (mic input and log profile is a huge plus). Best to you
Think I might for the time being just start doing my videos with my Canon 6D and then save up for something like that. I'm looking to start doing youtube tutorials on graphic design and photography so I'll eventually will end up vlogging while shooting photos for the lessons. I wouldn't mind something compact for that as nice b roll could be still done on the 6D. Just want another camera so as to keep my 6D for photography
I got this on Amazon Warehouse Deals, Cyber Monday, open box, $360 w/ kit lens. When comparing this camera to anything else, price has to be stressed, it's really hard to beat this thing for the money, my other option being considered was a used D3200....no 4k, terrible continuous autofocus, MUCH bigger and heavier...though bigger sensor for sure.
Hi Ted, one question. Did you manage to adjust the shutter speed, aperture and iso manually in video mode? I tried adjusting the photograhy mode dials but the video is not affected by the exposure settings I use. Please help. Thank you.
Sometimes I get the impression that Panasonic has left over 16MP m43 sensors, that are outdated at this point, and want to get rid of them so they make these type of smaller cameras. There is probably a niche market out there and there is something to be said for an ILC in the palm of your hand. I think it's time for discontinuation of the 16MP and stick with the new 20MP m43 that has commenced it introduction. I still can't figure out why they would put advanced video, such as 4K, in these cameras with NO mic input. Do they really think that vloggers will not want to consider this camera?
It sounds to me like your Ansco box camera has a shutter speed of 0.182857 sec. Could you verify that for me with some high speed? Just wondering if I was right.
Love your reviews and your videos. Very detailed and straight to the point. Keep it up!
Thanks!
Enjoy your Panasonic review & photography as art...like to read your opinion which MFT Gx/G or any Lumix (w/15mm or?) is close to the Fuji x100F, latest version . Video quality is top notch, audio is spot on and the amount of information given is excellent. Keep it up!
The GX85 with that flip up screen is what I need
Too bad it doesn't have the IBIS
True! I haven't found anything that's better than gx 85😭
no, it has recording time limitation, and hot issue, which reduces flexibility
I love your camera reviews. They're an insight on how you work and real world use cases which are relevant to us. I bought my RX100 m3 because of you and I couldn't be happier/ I'm glad Panasonic has created this camera, but the RX100 is just fantastic with minimum fuss.

Thanks Chris - agreed…
Panny has been doing that for years. DVX100, GH2, GH4...
Panasonic always had issues with colors until the late Venus Engine 9 era arrived and solved that (gx8 to g85) :D
It is not solid review he didn't go thru everything We don't know it does 4k clean HDMI output
I bought this camera for my RUclips channel (different account) about a week ago, and I was a little apprehensive because you hadn't done a review on it yet. Swept along there with a riveting review ! Always a pleasure listening to Mr F.
I wasted so much time watching other reviews of this camera that took a lot more time to tell me a lot less than yours. Thanks for this video.
Interesting offering from Panasonic. I really wish they could match Sony in the AF department. I'd be into them so hard!
Thank you for the thorough, concise, and informative review.
Love your videos! Great review very well explained! You make things look so easy!
I sold my GX85 for this GX850 and I absolutely love it. It is a pocket-able, fast-operating camera for just $450 (grey)! Very happy with IQ / 4K/ 1080p60 in good light however low light IQ is poor. Radically different analog signal to digital converter between both cameras. Thx for pointing it out mate.
The video quality, though. For its size and current price, it is a steal.
im such an amateur im buying the camera just bc it has a real cute pink version of it but i found this review really helpful GOD BLESS
Thanks for your reviews!
Good review. Practical and helpful info. Thumbs up =)
Wow, great review. Admiring cam you used to record this video n so glad it's the gx
I'm currently using an LX100 ii but this is an intriguing alternative as a system camera. It's TINY!
great review Ted :D
High five Ted....thanks for the great review.
Great review
Isn't it Gx800 in Europe?
Yep, like GX85 is the GX80 here.
Yes it’s GX800 in England, not sure about Europe though
And in Ireland
@Hatori Ibuki GF9 = GX850 = GX800?
Great review!!! Thanks.

Very smart content. Thank you.
Thanks for a good Review.I wonder if there is any problem with overheating shooting video HD 1080?

Since I went to full-frame I use it all the time, unless I'm forced to go back to the APS-C. But so far that hasn't happened, yet.
BTW--> It may be time to change your furnace filter. :-)
I have the older previous model, the Pany GF7, and I really like it for travel. I'm wondering if the upgrade is worth it.
Thanks for the review. So, was the AF supposed to fall down at 8:30 mark? Seemed to hold up fine.
Great review, the no mic input is a bummer sadly.
Man, that cleared things up. thanks !
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Nikon 1 J5... Looking at the numbers, it seems to be one of the best cameras for the price, but sometimes numbers lie.

Is the movie recording limit is only the 4K ? Can you get more than 5min on HD ?
What about 1080 video? Is it any good? Does the 5 minute record limit apply?
No, 20 min limit.
@@btcbenny21 I think he means the 4K video limit.

Awesome videos like always. Which camera are you using I love the resolution. Also, what editing software do you use?

called GF9 in my country, Japan
Here in Britain it is called the GX800, and I believe the same is true in the rest of Europe.
Luv the vid, thanks.

thank you for the video. should be good enought for my need. But i would like to know how it stands against the Yi M1? If it's possible for you to compare them for video, it would be extremly appreciated.
what camera are you using to shoot this video? the contrast is amazing.
Great review! Just one imprtant Q: Is ist possible to switch focus points through the touchscreen while doing live video recording?

Is it worth it to buy as a beginner in the world of photography/cinematography in terms of price point? Thanks
thanks for the nice review. Do you know if it has the same shutter mechanism as is found on the gx85?
Cool review, however i am in the midst of choosing whether to get this or the Sony A5100... what do you guys think? :D
+Kiyoshi Osawa unfortunately that is correct
Unfortunately no manual control for video, everything is automatic. You can however choose the exposure but before you click record.
Do you also experience overheating issues even when shooting 1080p 60fps?
GX850 or M50? Which do you think is the better buy?
how does this gf9 compared with the canon m100? very similar size and specs despite no 4k
but no evf//how do you focus a manual lens in sunlight?
Would you recommend this or the lx10 for concert photography which doesn't allow big dslr
Can I squeeze this into a smoothQ gimbal?
In Europa it's not GF but the GX 800. ;-) (Same as the GX 85 which is in Europe the GX 80.)
Btw. Thanks a lot for your Review!
thanks for all your videos that are very helpful.
Hi Ted, Could you tell us, what is the cool down period, after 5 minutes videoing?
Is there a crop factor when shooting 4k video like there is with the GH4?
WOW! Thats Huge, total deal breaker for me!
@@T0BBi94 same for me!
go for Canon eos M50 if you have tight budget
I've been using the GM1 as a backup video camera along with the GH4 for a few years. The lack of manual video modeling the GX850 makes it no deal for me. Sadly, Panasonic seems to have ditched the GM line, so it won't be easy to get a replacement in the future.
first of all ,great review .Also do you think this camera could be considered panasonic substitute to panasonic dmc-gm5? I was searching for something pocketable to have always with me but at the same time also versatile .I stumbled upon the panasonic gm5 but right now it is a two years old camera and I don't think it is worth it anymore.Do you think this would be a good choice ?
thanks for the review. one question, does there face detection not work if you hold the camera upside down with the screen flipped up?
What vlogging camera with 4K ideally would y'all recommend for under 800
Ryan iPhone
Allen Reid You can't see yourself while recording 4K on that and the front facing lens is far worse than the back one.
For such a price, here are countless options, and dozens of good ones. There is no one right pick.
Also, it depends if you're only going to use it for vlogging or if you wish to take photos too...
I would get a second hand canon 70d with the kit lens and save up for the sigma 18-35 f1.8, you don't need 4k
sony fdr x3000
Se puede hacer streaming con esta camara?
Great review Ted! Quick question: is the 4K on the gx850 comparable to the gx85? Would you get the gx850 over the gx85?
Hello Ted, what's your favorite small 4K video camera at the moment?
Hi Ted, one question. Did you manage to adjust the shutter speed, aperture and iso manually in video mode? I tried adjusting the photograhy mode dials but the video is not affected by the exposure settings I use. Please help. Thank you.
Can this camera be used as a webcam on desktop computers?
Would you recommend this camera over fujifilm x-a3, Olympus pen e-pl8, and canon m3?
GX850 also has the improved color processor over the GF7. It's a new "venus" era for Panasonic (more like Venus 9+)
Can I record 1080P video at 60FPS up to 30min without overheating? Thanks
can you shoot v-log uusing this camera?
Sometimes I get the impression that Panasonic has left over 16MP m43 sensors, that are outdated at this point, and want to get rid of them so they make these type of smaller cameras. There is probably a niche market out there and there is something to be said for an ILC in the palm of your hand. I think it's time for discontinuation of the 16MP and stick with the new 20MP m43 that has commenced it introduction. I still can't figure out why they would put advanced video, such as 4K, in these cameras with NO mic input. Do they really think that vloggers will not want to consider this camera?
Why get this as a compact camera if you're gonna get zoom lens separately when u can get the Panasonic lx100??
Does this camera have the same soft shutter as the GX85?
It sounds to me like your Ansco box camera has a shutter speed of 0.182857 sec. Could you verify that for me with some high speed? Just wondering if I was right.
