Good Day all, Today video we will be walking and exploring Cleveleys in Blackpool.
How the History of Cleveleys Began…
Thornton Cleveleys dates back more than a thousand years. Once known as ‘Torentum’ it can be found in the Domesday Book.
Thornton means “thorn-tree enclosure” and Cleveleys means “woodland clearing near a cliff or bank”. You can still see the remains of a petrified forest on the beach today. Thousands of years ago, trees lined the river that once ran along the route of Victoria Road. Borehole logs of ground samples show that there is geological evidence of a major river outlet here, probably the River Wyre.
1643 provides the earliest reference to this bit of the Fylde Coast that we’ve found in our research. A Spanish Vessel came ashore at Rossall Beach. Both Parliamentarian and Royalist armies were after the prize of these lands.
However, Cromwell’s army had to go via Garstang and Over Wyre, where his supporters were. On the other hand, Lord Derby being amongst friends, was able to march right up to Layton Hawes and alongside the Fylde coast without any interference. He therefore secured the booty for the Royalists.
    First mention of Cleveleys
Thanks to Bill Moorcroft from TCP for digging out the following information. He tells us that what’s believed to be the first reference to Cleveleys can be found in the published diary of Thomas Tyldesley of Foxhall and Myerscough.
    Cleveleys or Ritherham
In the 1800’s the locality was sometimes called Cleveleys - at other times Ritherham, after the nearby farm. Andy tells us that as far as he can see, the earliest suggestion of an inn on the site is the mention of “Bowling Green” on Fearon & Eyes’ navigational chart of 1737. Andy adds “I don’t know what the inn was called. It may well have been the Eagle. I seem to recall Catherine Rothwell mentioning that the inn was the Hesketh Arms, but I don’t know where she got it from.”

Nice to see an independent record shop still going, I can't believe how clean and tidy it looks compared to parts of blackpool.

Hi, thanks for your comment and watching the video, yes it’s good to see them around, few and far between Im afraid, I remember I had a record player when I was a kid, fun times.. and yes so much cleaner than the town centre and surrounding areas. it’s such a relaxing place and easy going if that makes sense, take care Paul.

When i was in my 20s, Cleveleys was nicknamed Gods Waiting Room because of the age of the residents but now even i might retire there😀

    • @TheBlackpoolLads
      @TheBlackpoolLads  5 месяцев назад +1

Yeah I’ve heard it being called that to, I would like to retire in Torquay where I lived for approx 10 years before moving back to Blackpool, but property is around £350k for an average 3 bed house, so if I don’t manage to get back their to retire probs even consider around Cleveleys too. thanks for commenting and watching also, take care Paul.

Good day, great video Paul.Yes,you were correct on the corner was a café.Will be in Cleveleys June,July and August to get away from the intense heat of Andalucía.We are very lucky to have homes in Spain and one in Cleveleys. If I had one criticism sadly there is too many charity shops. If you are in Cleveleys again try the meat and potato pies from Beans.A greeting my friend, mas tarde.

Hey, many thanks for your lovely comment and watching, I agree there is lots of charity shops sprung up, the trouble is they’re more expensive than RRP in normal shops lol! I thought it was a cafe before it sadly been converted, made great scones and coffee in there.
well hope you have a great time when your back.. I bet our summer is like a spring day to you then hehe, well enjoy the rest off your day and take care, Paul

I like how you can see some traces of the old brick pavement. Be cool if they'd scrape off the layers of tar for some of them.

@@TheBlackpoolLads My pleasure. Keep up the good work. I'm in Toronto, so unfortunately, after World War II, they went on a modernization spree. Tore down way too much of the 19th/early 20th century downtown and built Legoland. There's still some beauty left, which they now treasure but great damage was done. English towns that weren't bombed in the war look great to me. Even when they're dilapidated
