Just bought my EOS R about 2 weeks ago brand new and I love it so far! I have a 6Dii that I was using to start my photography business. Upgrading my main camera to be the R has made my work so much easier and less stressful. The speed of the autofocus and the touch and drag features alone make shooting a breeze!

100% agree for photography the R is fantastic. If I had no need for video I would have never upgraded to an R5. The EOS R is still a very capable camera. Thanks for the comment.
I’m looking for camera to do 4K video shoots, and I have a canon lenses i still want to use. I’m upgrading from a 5DMII. For clarification, I do still shoots (tripod mounted).
Great video! Thinking of getting the EOS R, As an upgrade from an iPhone 13 Pro Max for You Tube video content. Just wondering on your thoughts? Think it’s worth the investment?
If you're shooting talking head content where you have the camera locked off on a tripod and you're talking to the lens the EOS R will work great. The image quality is amazing. Where the EOS R will struggle is if you want to shoot hand held video. The lack of IBIS will lead to shaky video. So it really depends on your needs. Hope that helps.
great video! I use Canon 7dm2. I want to jump to full frame. The EOS Canon 6dm2 has a great price right now. But I don't know what to do. Should I stay with the DSLR system or should I go to the mirrorless system? I've been doing landscape most of the time, but now I need to do something different like concerts, events, social, etc. Thanks for your help...
Thanks for the comment. I think if you are just doing landscapes the DSLR would be fine but if you are getting into shooting in darker environments like concerts and events I would go with a mirrorless camera. The new AF systems are so much better you'll get a lot more sharp shots with focus on the eyes. The EOS R or R8 would be good starter cameras in the full frame mirrorless world. Hope that helps. Welcome the channel and good luck with your photography.
If you don't need the adapter to be waterpoof than this is a great third party adapter. I've been using it for years with EF glass and it works great. ruclips.net/video/tJ5G1uG1xJc/видео.html In terms of lenses for the R. It's hard to say because I don't know what you shoot. Each type of photography has it's one best focal lengths. But with that being said you can find pretty much all EF lenses used at a good price right now so they all good value for money.
Thank you for your terrific video, which has certainly made me more enthusiastic than I already was about checking out the EOS R. I'm looking to upgrade my camera from the 5D Mk ii that I currently use. It's been a great workhorse for me. I shoot mostly real estate and architectural professionally, and portraiture/fine art occasionally. I'm interested primarily in image quality, video capability and getting the most bang for my limited buck. I will also need the new camera to shoot decent video for real estate and the occasional RUclips video, though I'm certainly not a filmmaker. Even though I've been salivating over the Fujifilm GFX 50s ii, I want to stick to Canon because of the L glass I've already invested in for years. I can't realistically start over, having to buy super expensive lenses for a new system, even though I love the idea of working in digital medium format (not for real estate of course). So I've looked hard at the 5D Mk iv and the 5DSR, but I also want some new technology, and figure I should probably go mirrorless to catch up with the rest of the world. So my search brought me to the R. I don't have the budget for the R5 or even the R6ii. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
I think the R will serve you well for architectural photography. Just keep in mind that if you intend on using the R for architectural video in 4k there is a crop so all your lenses will appear longer. So if you want wide video perspective you'll have to buy an ultrawide lens. However if you film videos in 1080p there is no crop. I think it will be a great camera for your photography needs. I used to shoot with a 5D II and I can tell you that the EOS R is a pretty bug step up in image quality. You'll love shooting with it.
Thanks for weighing in and responding so quickly. It appears I’m headed to the R! I’m aware of the 4K crop, but I think 1080p will be quite sufficient for RE video, particularly since they‘ll be viewed online via computer and phone screens for the most part.
So glad that this vid came up in my search - you've answered alot of the questions I had. I'm looking for a B camera to my R5 and the R and R8 are the two bodies I'm considering. I shoot alot of wildlife/birding and some sports. I had read some about the evf blackout when using A1 Servo, causing issues with tracking subjects. Can you speak to this? Did firmware updates address this? I wouldn't plan on using the R at an airshow tracking a jet, but I can see it having a 70-200 2.8 on it when we roll through Yellowstone to use for closer subjects. Thanks!
I would recommend the R8 for your shooting needs. The EOS R doesn't have advanced AF features like bird tracking, animal eye detect tracking or plane tracking. It's face tracking is also not fast enough for sports photography. The EOS R is great if you're shooting portraits of people that where it really shines but based on what you shoot I think the R8 is the better solution.
@@sprayhawk808Hi sprayhawk, I have the R6 and R6 mk II. If you are looking for a B cam that has similar features to the R5 and can capture fast moving subjects you should go with the R6 mk II. The battery life on the R8 is not good. Keep in mind the R8 does not use the same battery as the R5, R6, R6 mk II, R7. It has the same battery as the RP.
it's all about the glass. I still own a d700 ans old school 24-70 as well as 80-200 I also own 4 R6 1 R5 1 R3 1 R7 but glass is key save for that fancy 2.8 glass if you can..
The EOS R has a shutter rated for 200k shots and the RP I think is rated for 100K shots. I would got with the EOS R because it should last a lot longer. Plus I think the image and video quality is better too.
Bro should I get the EOS R or the 5D mark IV? I'm pretty torn. I saw a sweet deal on a 5D4, 120K (philippine peso), comes with a 16-35 F4l II USM and a 24-105 F4L, 3000+ shuttercount, no boxes. Its that, or to get a brand new EOS R and a bunch of RF lenses brand new, like the 50mm RF and the 85F2 or 35mm. Planning to get into photography, professionally. Mainly gonna start a business focusing on intimate portraits and fine art photography.
That 5D4 sounds like a great deal but if you're new to photography and want to build a career out of it first thing you should do is subscribe to this channel ;) and second thing I would do is pick up the EOS R instead. Image quality is going to be the same on both cameras but the technology in the EOS R is totally different. There would be no sense in mastering how to use old DSLR technology. The industry has moved over to mirrorless so that would be the smartest choice for you as a new photographer. Hope that helps.
The R is an amazing camera, i'm still not sold on shooting 4K video, the 1080p video is amazing on this thing, but if i shoot 4k, i would use the 16mm 2.8 and the 24mm 1.8 which will still keep the camera nice and wide. My r% is a photo beast and i use it for that!
The RF 24-105 f4 L IS, the RF 24-70 f2.8 L and if you like to go wider the RF 15-35 f2.8 L are good starter lenses that offer versatility. I don’t know what your budget is but the RF 28-70mm f2 is the king of optical quality but it comes with some drawbacks. Namely price and weight. I have a video about it on the channel.
Please does exposing the sensor affect the camera while changing lenses. I got mine recently, and a friend was switching lenses, he forgot to switch off the camera and he changed lenses
I haven't experienced any overheating with the R out in the natural sunlight but I will admit I don't do a lot of video work outside on hot sunny days. There's probably a good video talking about it by Potato Jet.
The sensor itself is decent in low light but the issue is the processor. It really slows down in dark situations. So if you're shooting a live event in the dark it's an issue. If you're shooting in dim light it's ok. I touch on it in the video.
Would you say this is better in terms of usability and colour science to Panasonic S1R? I have been using S1R for a bit and i feel it ks harder to edit the colours for some reason compaee to 6D I used to own
When it comes to color science the R has a bit of a green shift which could be problematic if you are using several cameras. S1R should have more accurate colors in my opinion though I will say I have not used the S1R. Panasonic is just known for good colors. I've been using the R5 for my video work and I I find the colors to be very good. The price of the R5 keeps dropping now that the R5 mkII is on the way. Maybe that's an option for you.
@jonathan1192 Battery life on R won't be as good as 5DmkIV, but I think advantages of R as a mirrorless would make it a solid compliment to a 5DmkIV. Especially with advantages like autofocus (5600+ focus points on R vs 61 on 5DmkIV), seeing exposure simulation on the EVF vs OVF, and the overall smaller/lighter body are some great pros. Like was mentioned in the video, hard to beat the value at the current price point on the second hand market.
@Moustafa11 Thanks so much! I will be picking one up!! I've been thinking about it for a while! I must say, the 5DMKIV is built like a tank!!! Love the feel of it!
It really depends on what you want to do. The R has better image quality in photo and but the R is only good for shooting portraits or subjects that are relatively still. If you want to shoot animals, sports or any fast moving subjects the AF is not going to keep up. I usually tell people if you need speed go with the R8 but for everything else the R is better.
Nice 👍 That's a beauty of a lens. I haven't used it yet but one day i'm sure i'll get the chance. Have fun getting out there and shooting with it. Thanks for the comment appreciated.
It has both. You can turn the mechanical shutter off if you want. The EOS R shutter is rated for 200,000 shots just in case you wanted to know that too.
Yesterday, I upgraded my firmware from the .4 to the 18? ( the newest canon has), because I got a message when I put the rf16 f2.8 lens on for thd first time.
lol. It's crazy how the lenses these days are so dependent on firmware. Hopefully you're liking the new features with the new firmware. Appreciate the comment.
Nice i'm sure you're loving the images out of the R. I shoot a lot of content with old FD lenses myself. I'm always stuck by how much more character those old lenses had. Thanks for the comment.
Really? I'll have to go look it up. I've been using the R series cameras since 2018 and haven't had any issues. Thanks for the heads up by the way I'll go read up on it.
Personally I feel like the has the older AF tracking system but it has a better sensor with a higher shutter rating. The R has a pro level sensor. If you're shooting portraits of people, or other subjects that aren't moving really fast I would go with the R.
I've been daily driving my parents old Eos 20D for the last 4-5 years. The camera is almost as old as I am, and while I've made it work with some beautiful photos for a while, I know its long past time to upgrade if I want a touch at anything professional. I often ask myself, have I unknowingly been living in hell with this camera for the last few years?
That good old 20D. That was my first digital camera. The technology in that camera is so dated. Dynamic range in the sensor especially. Upgrading to an EOS R would be a massive upgrade in image quality for you. Thanks for the comment.
I somewhat agree there. Yes you have a point but in my experience most raw files out of camera all look the same. The difference in the sensors is all relative to how much you can push the image in post. Dynamic range for example can only really be seen in edited images. I'll try to include more before and after shots in future videos or on the blog post so you can see raw shots out of camera.
I still wonder why canon decided to take those features out of the EOS R. I can't think of anything that makes sense. Maybe they knew that they where building a camera around a very good sensor and didn't want to hurt future sales?
@@vaskoobscura_ I've only really shot with Fuji so find myself tempted by FF. I couldn't afford canon 1.2 lenses tho so don't know how much difference I'd see
That's a big issue for sure. Even when I use the R to shoot weddings I'm always switching out cards every 30min to ensure if there is a problem with a card I still have most of my work on other cards.
I've been working as a photographer for 18 years. I'm very grateful to have had the opportunities i've had and collected some nice gear along the way. Keep working on developing your craft and i'm sure you'll get to where you want to be as well :) Thanks for the comment.

That's an awesome feature. I use it a lot when shooting with vintage lenses. Thanks for the comment.
Its on my wishlist hope i can buy at at the end of January
Good luck. Hopefully you find a good deal. You'll love the camera.
great video!
Nice video! I’m on the hunt for an EOS R currently and was curious which adapter and budget friendly lenses you would recommend for it?
If you don't need the adapter to be waterpoof than this is a great third party adapter. I've been using it for years with EF glass and it works great. ruclips.net/video/tJ5G1uG1xJc/видео.html
In terms of lenses for the R.
@@roelkuiper9919 good luck with your new camera. Glad to help.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thanks - really appreciate your perspective. How about the R6 or the R8? Does the better sensor in the R8 give it the nod over the R6?
100%. Good glass makes the biggest difference. Investing in good glass always pays off.
I Vasko! I want to start photography as an enthusiast just for taking street portraits and landscape. Between this one and RP what do you recommend?
Would really appreciate your opinion on this. Thank you so much Sir.
Idk but I'm on the DSLR side rather than mirrorless I'm so sad they will stop making. And going mirrorless :(
My workflow usually doesn't exceed 4k 24. This camera is a beast!
Same for me. 4k 24 is my go-to. The R is surprisingly good. Thanks for the comment.
A great video! Keep up the good work!
Appreciate it. Thank you for being part of the channel.
Thanks alot, needed this review
No problem 👍 Thanks for leaving a comment. Got lots of EOS R content on the channel if you're looking for more info on the camera :)
I agree. The R is a photo beast but it's just ok for video. Thanks for the comment. Welcome to the channel.
What are its video limitations? How/why is not good for 4K shooting?
So what lens can i use with The Eos R for both studio and outdoors
The RF 24-105 f4 L IS, the RF 24-70 f2.8 L and if you like to go wider the RF 15-35 f2.8 L are good starter lenses that offer versatility. I don’t know what your budget is but the RF 28-70mm f2 is the king of optical quality but it comes with some drawbacks. Namely price and weight. I have a video about it on the channel.
The EF 85mm focuses faster on the R than on older EF bodies!
That EF 85 was a notoriously slow focuser. lol. From my experience with it on the R it works great.
Please does exposing the sensor affect the camera while changing lenses. I got mine recently, and a friend was switching lenses, he forgot to switch off the camera and he changed lenses
It shouldn't make any difference. Older DSL camera always had the sensors exposed to light when lenses were changed.
@@vaskoobscura_ thank you very much Sir. I needed this to calm down
What about over heating at daylight 🤔🤔
I haven't experienced any overheating with the R out in the natural sunlight but I will admit I don't do a lot of video work outside on hot sunny days. There's probably a good video talking about it by Potato Jet.
How good is it in low light
Coming from a 5DMKIV, is it worth it for me to buy it as a second body?
Just get a R5 and dump the antiquated 5D.
@Moustafa11 is 100% right. The EOS R would be a great second camera to your 5DmkIV. At the price the value for money is great.
@FlatWaterFilms eventually I will! Cost is pretty high right now!
is r8 better choice?
It really depends on what you want to do. The R has better image quality in photo and but the R is only good for shooting portraits or subjects that are relatively still. If you want to shoot animals, sports or any fast moving subjects the AF is not going to keep up. I usually tell people if you need speed go with the R8 but for everything else the R is better.
Thanks I have been waiting for this lol , I am upgrading my glass to rf just arrived today 100-500 lol😂😂
Nice 👍 That's a beauty of a lens. I haven't used it yet but one day i'm sure i'll get the chance. Have fun getting out there and shooting with it. Thanks for the comment appreciated.
i have unanswered question (i search but comes out with no info at all), does eos r have full mechanical shutter or just efcs?
It has both. You can turn the mechanical shutter off if you want. The EOS R shutter is rated for 200,000 shots just in case you wanted to know that too.
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks thats reaaly helpful, eos r then, r6 is still too much for my wallet hahaha
Appreciate the comment.
just bought an R today for $600 14k on shutter 🙌🏽
Nice. That's an awesome price. Congrats on the camera.
I love my R bought 3 months for 900$ just body. Rn all I’m using is my old FD lens and some L
Nice i'm sure you're loving the images out of the R. I shoot a lot of content with old FD lenses myself. I'm always stuck by how much more character those old lenses had. Thanks for the comment.
Rf 70-200 is on my wish list
It's a beautiful lens from what I hear. Thanks for the comment.
No. . But, your videos are awesome!
Thanks for the honest thought appreciate it.
Canon R-series cameras have a hot shoe problem. PetaPixel wrote a detailed article about it recently.
Really? I'll have to go look it up. I've been using the R series cameras since 2018 and haven't had any issues. Thanks for the heads up by the way I'll go read up on it.
Canon R or Canon R8 ?? WHICH SHOULD YOU BUY? Why
Thanks for the comment.
when you want to show image quality, you have to present untouched images........
Bro released this video 1 day after I bought mine 😮💨
Congrats on the new camera.
I wish it had a wheel, that touch bar is no fun
I still wonder why canon decided to take those features out of the EOS R. I can't think of anything that makes sense. Maybe they knew that they where building a camera around a very good sensor and didn't want to hurt future sales?
I can feel a build up of GAS 😅
EOS R is a fantastic camera even to this day.
@@vaskoobscura_ I've only really shot with Fuji so find myself tempted by FF. I couldn't afford canon 1.2 lenses tho so don't know how much difference I'd see
The main issue for me is lack of 2 card slots.
That's a big issue for sure. Even when I use the R to shoot weddings I'm always switching out cards every 30min to ensure if there is a problem with a card I still have most of my work on other cards.
There’s better value elsewhere
That's fair. What cameras are you thinking have better value at the sub $1000 price point?
No one is panning like that when you are doing video. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I know lol. If anybody made a movie panning like that I'm sure the audience would get sick. hahahaha.
Thousand dollar camera with a $3.5k lens - lol
I've been working as a photographer for 18 years. I'm very grateful to have had the opportunities i've had and collected some nice gear along the way. Keep working on developing your craft and i'm sure you'll get to where you want to be as well :) Thanks for the comment.
@@vaskoobscura_ It's all about the journey. The R5 has been a game changer for me as I'm a hybrid shooter.

I guess you're a Pentax fan. lol
