So a multi-millionaire with access to heath care not available to 80% of the US population contracted an illness that is easily treatable with antibiotics and we should view that like she was battling a life threatening illness? That's a poor excuse for making a garbage album solely made to satisfy a recording contract.
It's not racist, I don't think it is, it's just cringe. Avril made a lot of good rock music twenty years ago, this song was ridiculous, unlistenable, as if she had run out of ideas (and not because it was different from her style) in fact now that she's back she's started making again pop-rock. If Japan liked the song, so be it.
Swish Swish didn’t destroyed Katy Perry’s career, it’s just that her album, Witness, didn’t connect with audiences and earned lukewarm sales. Wasn’t a bad album, but I get it why critics were skeptical on the song choices. Chained To The Rhythm was probably her most underrated song on the album.

Wonder how many people are going to be looking up Billy Squier now. I actually have 3 of his albums, including his 1981 best selling album, Don't Say No.
When MTV first started, nobody knew from videos. So nobody was sure what they should look like. That's a great song, but he was toast the second that video hit MTV...poor Billy...
Kokomo - Beach Boys. Killed off the momentum they were starting to form in the late 80s despite the song charting well. And it featured a young John Stamos on steel drums. (i kinda like the song lol)
Katy Perry failed mainly because she went psycho after the 2016 election, cut her hair with that Eminem looking doo and got super weird. That turned a lot of fans off. Granted, pop music was shifting in an different direction by then and the “Pop girl” thing (Britney, Kesha, Gaga, etc) was kinda losing its spark in the mainstream, BUT I personally feel had she not went off the deep end after the election, she could have maybe stuck around for another year or two with a few occasional hit songs. At her high, she pretty much dominated and defined the 2010s!!
I don't see anything "racist" in the video "Hello Kitty" by Avril Lavigen after all it's not just Japanese people who are allowed to wear such clothes because if it is I will probably have to throw away a lot of my clothes that I have bought in countries other than where I live (🇩🇰Denmark🇩🇰)
You can't put Rebecca Black's "Friday" in the same breath as Allison Gold's "Shush Up". At least "Friday" has a "so bad it's good" charm to it and you won't walk away from it feeling dirty or sick to your stomach at least from watching the video.
Oh come on, that Big Bad Wolf video is objectively HILARIOUS. That's incredibly funny, surreal AND really creative. People should be praising that for being sheer comedic genuis, not whining about it. Wow, people really can't take a joke anymore.
I feel like, other than Billy Squire, none of these are really videos that destroyed artists careers. Most of these were artists who were already fading away or never had a career to begin with. You could include Mr. Roboto by Styx (who had fairly consistent success at that point), We Built This City by Starship (where the song was a huge hit, but the video killed all momentum for the band), Abracadabra by the Steve Miller Band (who again, still consistent with success, but basically stopped after the video came out), Sailing by Christopher Cross (establishing self as a serious artist, but his image just killed his career), or American Life by Madonna (was still arguably the biggest name in pop music for 20 years, but completely killed that for her by wussing out on putting a serious anti-war music video like she originally wanted). Those were legit career enders.
I suspect they werent paying attention to the song, only what was going on in the vid. The uncensored version shows everything that the plastic concealed.
I loved Hello Kitty, the song and the video, the whole thing reminded me of Harajuku in Japan. I lived in Japan for 4 years and I remember how popular the culture she showed in the video was amoung young people there. I never understood how it could be called racist, when there wasn't any criticism coming directly from Japan.
The claim was she was co-opting their culture to push her career forward and that was the racial element where she is white. I'm just reporting not condemning her. It sounds more like she was doing a tribute to the culture and not mocking it.
Imagine claiming Nas career was "destroyed" in 1999. He hadn't even written Ether, the most seminal diss in music history and a title that became part of music vernacular. That's aside from a clutch of great albums released nearly quarter of a century later. Absurd.
Avril was extremely involved in Japanese media even in the 2000’s, featuring on TV and game shows. Notably, she was a semi-regular guest on Cartoon KAT-TUN, which used Girlfriend as their theme song.
I genuinely don't really understand where we decided it was okay to bully kids like Jenna Rose and Allison Gold when neither of them were in charge of anything that happened with their music videos.
The careers of Nas and Diddy would not end with "Hate Me Now." Diddy would release "Satisfy You" "Bad Boys for Life," "I Need a Girl (Part I and II)" "Shake Ya Tailfeather." Nas would release "One Mic" and "I Can"
I believe the Billie Squire video was supposed to be a parody of other videos, but he didn’t communicate the plan with his audience. That’s what I heard anyway.

Swish swish was a terrible song that made a somehow worse music video, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it destroyed Katy Perry’s career.
The album was just hypocritical, she said it's "purposeful pop" but it's not, and she stab her gay fans when she collaborated with Migos
Her unflattering blonde pixie cut and drastic image change killed her career
Never forget it was supposed to be a Taylor Swift dis track in response to "Bad Blood." And while the whole thing was stupid, "Bad Blood" is the banger.
... I have not heard of many of these people ...
You haven't missed very much at all.
Swish Swish is by far the worst song of 2017
I had never ever heard that song till it was a lip sync song on RuPaul’s Drag Race 🙉
The song wasn't that bad. It was actually good. Then backpack kid made it cringe for everyone.
To be fair, there hasn’t been a good song made in decades
I liked the song. But the video was absolute garbage
I was a fan of Katy until that song
The Nas video was fine, you have to remember it was the same year Manson did a video carrying a cross, it was a 90s thing.
Quite a leap from 2010’s to the ‘80’s!
I know, right???
Nas featuring Puff Daddy - "Hate Me Now"
Robin Thicke - "Get Her Back"
Katy Perry featuring Nicki Minaj - "Swish Swish"
Allison Gold - "Shush Up"
Kid Rock - "Don't Tell Me How to Live"
Duck Sauce - "Big Bad Wolf"
Jenna Rose featuring Baby Triggy - "My Jeans"
Redfoo (featured in a song by Play-N-Skills along with Lil Jon and Enertia McFly) - "Literally I Can't"
Avril Lavigne - "Hello Kitty"
Billy Squier - "Rock Me Tonight"
Thanks...😊
Hello Kitty didn’t end Avril’s career, it greatly improved her from ever repeating that style plus Girlfriend
do you know what she is going these days
@@jimbo9208 more alternative stuff including collabs with the likes of Travis Barker, Mod Sun & a carpool karaoke with Yungblud & Tik Tok with Tony Hawk
Nope it was a downgrade.
The song hits differently after finding out her then husband Chad Kroeger wrote it in his Trainwreckord video
Also it was only western white people offended because that's one of Avril's biggest hits in Japan.
Only clicked to see if Billy Squier was here. I was not disappointed.
It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it.
Warren Buffett
2010's mainstream music was very weak since the 1930's.
Hello kitty is by avril lavigne
@danielrubinstein896
Oops, I didn't even see that I wrote wrong, and thanks for seeing what I didn't see 👍
@@Bo_D_Hansen it's fine
Good you didn't add Intuition into the final list. It was actually a hilarious parody of pop at the time.
That's what I remember it to be also, thanks for clarifying!
You can't put Rebecca Black's "Friday" in the same breath as Allison Gold's "Shush Up". At least "Friday" has a "so bad it's good" charm to it and you won't walk away from it feeling dirty or sick to your stomach at least from watching the video.
That poor girl.. they did a video about it on Vice where she talks about that whole ordeal
Rebecca didn't have a career to destroy in the first place
Rebecca Black and BBNO$ 's "yoga" video is pretty fun.
The uncensored version of "Hate Me Now" was finally found a little over a year ago.
I actually like that Katy Perry music video !
“Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke. How can anyone like something so misogynistic?
I suspect they werent paying attention to the song, only what was going on in the vid. The uncensored version shows everything that the plastic concealed.
A bunch of women did at the time. This was a bro culture time as well.
Oh look- A male feminist! Keep fighting the good fight ! 🤣🤣
@@cascade3769 Well he was cringe anyway but remember what the 2010s decade was all about...the Bro. The 2020s...the Woke.
@@starscreamthecruel8026 Yes, I think you're right. People just liked the catchy tune and didn't pay attention to the lyrics.
I never thought a music video can cause so much damage to your career. Enough said.
If this topic exists for any reason, it's "Rock Me Tonight".
What a bunch of trainwrecks! Good picks!
Everyone BUT the japanese people found Hello Kitty offensive
"Get her back" ... The simps anthem
The simps that loves to slander on Twitter/X don’t get enough criticism. They get off way too easy.
LMAO!!
Love the background music
OMG I totally forgot about My Jeans 😂
You left it behind the drier. It must have fallen out by accident.
Sean Combs "playing a criminal" 😐
100% hypocrite.
Great list... I haven't heard any of these songs ^^
With Avril, people also believed the real artist died and her double took over hence her changed sound, look, etc etc.
Swish Swish. Worse than Rebecca Black's Friday video.
Convince me otherwise.
Everybody here was thinking Blurred Lines has to be number one on this list but then Billy Squire dusts off his knees and says "Hold my beer..."
I feel like for the Kid Rock one if he took it more seriously the music video would be better than feeling like a parody
He most likely thought he was being serious when he made the video
@@michaelslaven6462In that case Kid Rock has no self-awareness skills
Puff being depicted as a criminal 😆😆😆 How very fitting.
I believe any worst video countdown is obliged by law to post Rock Me Tonight at #1.
I don’t agree with this list but I respect your opinion WatchMojo.
how can you not agree with the truth
Its not even remotley close to the truth! That Nas thing is utter ridiculous!@@jimbo9208
Gosh I wonder if Billy Squire will be numero uno!!!
Ironically Rock Me Tonite is his biggest hit in the US
Imagine claiming Nas career was "destroyed" in 1999. He hadn't even written Ether, the most seminal diss in music history and a title that became part of music vernacular. That's aside from a clutch of great albums released nearly quarter of a century later. Absurd.
The big bad wolf is hysterical. It wasn't supposed to be taken as a serious artistic video
So My Jeans ruined Jenna Rose's career? What kind of career did she have before the song came out?
Avril was extremely involved in Japanese media even in the 2000’s, featuring on TV and game shows. Notably, she was a semi-regular guest on Cartoon KAT-TUN, which used Girlfriend as their theme song.
“Hate Me Now” didn’t poison the career of Nas. His highest charting single “I Can” was 3 albums after this.
"African Child" destroyed Aldus Snow... So sad. Glad he could make a come back ❤
i'm so glad russell brand is not a thing anymore, he sucks
If he was a real artist, then African Child by Aldous Snow would definitely be on the list.
I loved Get Him To The Greek
Right up there with the Equal Rights song by Connor4Real 😆
I don't know fellows that swish swish videos anything but lackluster. They did WAY too much. Prime example of less is more.
There was no way Billy Squier wasn't going to be #1, but you couldn't find another video from before 2010?! Stupid And Lazy, huh?
I genuinely don't really understand where we decided it was okay to bully kids like Jenna Rose and Allison Gold when neither of them were in charge of anything that happened with their music videos.
Rock Me Tonight is legend among all-time career ending videos. Good Lord, Billy Squier WTH were you thinking?
Can't imagine why Weird Al would parody a parody like Kid Rock.
I know i'm truly getting old, when i only recognize only a few of the songs, on this list, lmao!!
My reaction to so many of these songs is…”WHO?!” 🤣🤣🤣
I thought the same thing. 🤣😂🤣
literally i can't is a good song tho
Roadhouse
The careers of Nas and Diddy would not end with "Hate Me Now." Diddy would release "Satisfy You" "Bad Boys for Life," "I Need a Girl (Part I and II)" "Shake Ya Tailfeather." Nas would release "One Mic" and "I Can"
There is one that stands above every other one: "Rock Me Tonight" by Billy Squier
That parting shot about Alanis Morrisette was beautiful
What song? It closed on Jewel.
Swish swish ended Katy Perry's career? That's news to me cause last I heard, she had a very successful Vegas residency.
Her career on pop charts is over when Witness drop
Not sure if this is a satirical comment
This video genuinely made me stop cleaning & sit down to watch.. nice
Couldn't even get through the intro without putting strobe lights in, huh? Bad Mojo.
I believe the Billie Squire video was supposed to be a parody of other videos, but he didn’t communicate the plan with his audience. That’s what I heard anyway.
