  • Get to know what it's like to be a part of AT&SF 2926 with this video of a slightly edited version of our driver footage from NMRD. Hear 2926 run from her engineer side air tank as she runs through central Albuquerque to and from the Albuquerque railyard.
    enjoy!

    It's amazing that the whistle on 2926 sounds so similar to the whistle on NKP 765.

    • @smrcatt
      @smrcatt 7 месяцев назад +3

      that's because they both have Nathan 6 chimes

    • @nathanschmidt4889
      @nathanschmidt4889 7 месяцев назад +3

      @smrcatt I'm not so sure about that one, no offense to you. The Rizzoli's did a restoration of the whistle and determined it was an LFM 540 6 Chime, or the Santa Fe 6. Very similar to the SP 6

    • @atsf2926
      @atsf2926  7 месяцев назад +4

      I would agree with Rizzoli that its a lfm 6 chime. However its hard to tell because 2926s original whistle which is on her right now doesn't have any markings or lettering on it so who really knows. But they are the whistle experts so I trust their judgment

    • @TheSteamGuy5125
      @TheSteamGuy5125 6 месяцев назад

      @@atsf2926from what I was told LFM supplied the Santa Fe with a lot of parts and whistles. And I don't the Santa Fe made their own whistles they went through LFM and they just basically renamed it to their own ATSF instead of LFM even though LFM was always labeled on the whistles. So they were basically considered ATSF whistles but LFM was always marked on them.

    I’m always in absolute awe in her whistle. To me, it sounds like Chessie 2101 and C&O 614 when they wore the the custom Nathan 5 chime to try and mimic a K5LA during the chessie special and safety express. Fav whistle of all time, now it is this one ❤

      @atsf2926  7 месяцев назад +2

      I would love to do that however in the 26th of August we didn't have a camera in the cab and on the 30th of September we had a camera but for whatever reason the battery pack didn't charge the camera so the gopro died once we rolled onto 8th street what you see in this video was all I got.

      @@atsf2926 it's fine, but I'm just glad to see an operating steam locomotive here in Albuquerque, but we work with what we got ya know, it just would've been nice to see what goes on in the cab, but hey you guys have done a fantastic job with her, and I'm pretty sure you got something like that planned in the near future. Keep up the good work.

    Honest question, why hasn't this loco been on an excursion yet?

    • @atsf2926
      @atsf2926  7 месяцев назад +33

      Simply put we don't own the mainline, our own cars, a diesel or a full ptc system yet. So to get out on the mainline requires a ton of talking to the right people and hoping they approve. its alot of politcal work that our president John and our political advisor are working tirelessly on. its not as simple as just doing it. Engines like big boy make it look easy because she is owned by UP themselves and has their full support. We are a privately owned locomotive so we don't have those same privileges

    • @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan
      @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan 7 месяцев назад +2

      There was a time when Amtrak had a partnership I kind of wish they didn’t discontinue that program which is something that nearly lost the private car privilege for various private car owners one of our losses was the new river train excursion from Huntington to Hinton but I truly wish that Amtrak still had their partner program of excursion locomotives which they had with engines like Norfolk and western 611 2926’s older relative number 3751 and southern Pacific daylight 4449

    • @Blueblur1987
      @Blueblur1987 7 месяцев назад +3

      Well simple answer they do not own any of the trackage rights to the mainline only their equipment so they'll have to ask the operators of the local/regional area railline Amtrak, Union Pacific RR, or BNSF Railway to run on their mainline they just can't take their locomotive out on the mainline whenever they please as they would be trespassing on private property so like I said they gotta have permission to plus if they enter onto the mainline and the dispatcher isn't informed they can set a train on the same track which will have dire disastrous consequences. And another thing is they do not own a fleet of passenger cars unlike Union Pacific RR, BNSF Railway, and Amtrak does so they gotta rent them which when you're a non-profit organization that depends on grants & donations for funding it makes it difficult just to operate the locomotive cost of fuel, water, and maintenance items like the rod bearing grease to keep the rod bearings lubricated that stuff doesn't come free. And just be patient the very hard part is over with restoring the locomotive the organization just needs to find an operator that will agree to partner with them so the locomotive has rails to run on which that is going to take some time to do it ain't going to happen overnight.

    Is it a possibility that excursions for Santa Fe 2926 will happen this year? I would love it if that was possible, and I would be there for the first one.

    • @TheSteamGuy5125
      @TheSteamGuy5125 7 месяцев назад

      For them to run a passenger excursion is very political nowadays with steam excursions, they have to talk to the right people to get approval to run on mainline tracks, that and they don't own any diesels or passenger cars, and they don't really have a full PTC system, and although the PTC system on 2926 will be able to set up the brakes on the engine alone, they don't have a track chart display on their PTC monitor because they don't have the technology for it on a steam locomotive, and that's why they need the diesel, and that's why they built all those electrical connections for the diecel on 2926, the diesel has that technology and with it connected to 2926 they will be able to mirror the track chart display and all that information onto their PTC monitor from the diesel and the engineer up front in the cab will be able to control the diesel from the cab of the 2926. But right now they need approval, and it's a lot of talking that they need to do.

      I'm pretty sure that's a natural noise for steamers, all of em do it to a degree especially when they're not being worked because there's always gonna be just a bit of slack in the motion.
