Are the American strawberries imported to Japan also bitter?! And has the debate over whether strawberries should be classified as a fruit or a vegetable already been settled?!
This comment is 100% correct. Dear future travellers: Even 'ordinary' sushi is surprisingly great by Western standards. And as for seasonal fruit...WOW!! Budget for a few random splurges on seasonal fruit which the farmers are proud to sell and have been grown with care. Share a peach between two people and so forth so it's not too crazily expensive. A giant bunch of green grapes is a must buy and anything else is a fun experiment which will ruin fruit for you forever as you'll always compare all fruit to your Japanese experiences and it will NEVER hold up. 😋🍍🍑🍇🍏🥝🍈🥭🍓😋
The fruit in Japan is indeed delicious, but it's expensive-fifty times more than in Thailand and ten times more than in the US. I go to Japan to eat fish and return to the US for fruit.
I went to a HUGE supermarket on my last holiday and bought a huge selection of cooking condiments and other groceries. More fun was had afterwards whilst holding my phone above the packaging doing a google translate on some of my 'random pot shot' items, discovering I'd bought truly excellent, useful things entirely by accident! I discovered a Japanese grocery store recommendation video at the 11th hour and went back to get some of her recommended products. So happy to find such videos. Thank YOU so much for taking me with you here in this video-- shopping in Japan is better than therapy, better than drugs'n'alcohol, better than yoga...one of my happy places. I love it. 🥰🛍🛒🗾
I thought I never would afford to go to Japan, but me and my daughter went five years ago. Not only did I find a good price for flight and hotel, we ate really cheap most of the time, like ramen and sushi in small restaurants but also the ready-made food was incredible! Freshly made, huge selection and that even in Seven-eleven’s! So, the whole journey was really price-worthy apart from an amazing experience.
This comment made me feel happy to read! I love to imagine a man and his beloved daughter feeling mutual delight upon discovering Japanese culture, food and shopping for the first time. I hope you'll get to go back soon. ☺🛫
The wagyu (cattle bred and raised in Japan) beef in Japan supermarkets is a great deal really. For example, you could get something like a sirloin cut for around $20/kg in the US, and in Japan for the wagyu, same cuts, could be about $60/kg. Yea its ~3 times more expensive, but even if you get the cheapest cuts of wagyu available, its still more delicious and tender than most high end cuts of American beef. And of course the price of wagyu in Japan is far FAR less than getting the "wagyu" outside Japan, which usually isnt a full bred wagyu cow anyway and doesnt taste as good. I load up on a few kg of cheap wagyu cuts every time i go to Japan, its sooo delicious!
When I was in Japan last December for 30 days, I only eat supermarket take outs. Unless you want to taste their beef you can get it at any tourist attraction places. Do also try everything that has grape taste. My favourite is Fanta grape and also Muscat Squash by TOKUNOU MITSUYA. Can get it in all Family Marts or LAWSONS. And a must try is their soft serve milk ice cream, cream puffs, chocolate eclairs. If you want cheap sushi, look for a restaurant called KURA then try their grape sorbet… Thank me later🎉🎉
The strawberries and grapes you saw are grown in Japan and its a specific strain developed in Japan, they general have guaranteed sweetness and quality from my experience over the years (Japan also has a specific grading system for their fruits according to sweetness and size etc) so they are going to be more expensive than something like Driscoll's strawberries for example. Also same for the beef you saw there, it's mostly wagyu in different grading and their city of origin.

I am a Chinese who studied in Japan, and I think both of you in China have realized how much Chinese people love fruits and how active the fruit market is.
