Kansas - Relentless (live 1980, remaster)

  • Remaster of a song I uploaded some 3 years ago. Better sound and widescreen image. This is the opening track from the album Audio-Visions, written by Kerry Livgren.
    Kansas had an unequalled live reputation and this track is living proof of that. I mean, put this next to the studio version, there´s no comparison really.
    It was filmed at the Summit, Houston, TX on December 9th, 1980. The material is historic because it turned out to be the last tour with the original 6 members, before Steve decided to leave. Ironically enough, it were lyrics of songs like this one that forced him to make that decision.
    The band:
    Kerry Livgren
    Steve Walsh
    Robby Steinhardt
    Dave Hope
    Rich Williams
    Phil Ehart

      @@VIDEOHEREBOB I give credit to Kelly Hanson for fronting Foreigner. I remember him from back in the 80's being the lead vocalist from the band Hurricane. (Check him out singing :Juke Box Hero..live)
      Ronni Platt does a great job filling in for Steve Walsh in Kansas. With that said, Lou and Steve were on a complete different talent & performance levels & were untouchable in their prime!

    Kerry gets a lot of praise for his song writing, rightfully so. But man, he is playing lead guitar, playing lead/accompanying keys and background singing. That is some fantastic talent all around right there.

    All things considered, Kerry Livgren should be considered one of the greatest Rock Musicians of all time, brilliant lyrics, bad ass guitar, excellent on keyboards as well. Vocals are about the only thing he can't do, but he deserves a ton more recognition than what he gets. As far as his throwing it away because of his faith, he would say it was his spiritual side that was the inspiration for all the great songs. The guy is a modern Mozart.

    Couldn't agree more. Just ask fellow musicians that used to tour with Kansas back in the 70's what they think about Kerry. While many don't understand why he threw it all away, most are quick to mention the admiration they have for the man's guitar and keyboard playing and his songwriting skills.
    "Gold and diamonds cast a spell. It's not for me I know it well. The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side." Well, he kept his word on that and chose peace of mind over worldly treasures.

      In my opinion, Steve Walsh has no equal as the premiere male blues/rock vocalist of my lifetime! I love Paul Rodgers, Miljokovich from Steelheart, Steve Marriott, Lou Gramm & Myles Kennedy-but NO ONE sings with such intensity, passion, range, vowel sounds that wrap around every note & has Steve's insane musicianship, stage presence & beautiful discography! He is a healthy obsession for me! 🎤🎹

    Even though the Kansas lineup changed many times over the years, I'm thankful that the departures didn't involve the burning of bridges, so key players like Steinhart and Walsh were able to return for various runs years later. Certainly the original lineup is considered the favorite, but key replacements like Elefante, Ragsdale, Morse, and Greer all played major roles in keeping the band relevant while delivering powerful recordings and performances themselves.

    Call me selfish if you wish, but the fact is if Walsh, and Livgren, and Hope could of somehow kept coexisting the sky was the limit for this Band. Regardless of whether it was faith, or ego, or both whatever it was caused a serious blow to a Band that is under appreciated, and today because of this is hardly known except for those who followed them. After these concert's in 1980 1981, and of course the demo's that should be remastered for The Vinyl Confession's Album with Walsh and released in some form, this was it of the best version of this Great Legendary Band, and at the end of the day it was, and is at the expense of the fan's. I will alway's love this Band for what it represent's message wise, musically, vocally, but I do feel a little jipped at the end of the day. The other incarnations of this Band are Great yes, and I love the music they put forth, but it was never the same after Audio Vision's. This is just my opinion, and if you want to call me selfish I will take that, but no one can watch this video, and not see what this band with the original lineup had to offer if they stay together in the 80's.

    • @stevelentz3
      @stevelentz3 5 лет назад +6

      Agree, they had so much talent and the music never seemed to stop flowing out of them, even as Walsh went on to do Streets and Livgren with A.D. Watching them jam live was incredible and I think this line up could of gone on until Steve's retirement in 2014.

    I happen to think the early 80s had some really great hybrids like this song- a lot of people criticize the direction of these bands, but I love Genesis Duke, I dig Yes's work around this period, and this particular song had a perfect mix of AOR, Hard Rock, Prog, and Pomp rock to be an excellent classic powerful song. Another band from this period to check out is Magnum, who mixed these elements a lot of the time too- and I know people bash Styx but yeah a lot of their songs have that type of mixture too

    • @mrz80
      @mrz80 2 года назад

      Speaking of Styx, a few years ago I ran across a broadcast on Palladia of Styx performing Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight clear thru. Coming across that after just having come back from seeing Kansas on the Leftoverture 40th tour made my day. Tommy Shaw's one of the few stratosphere-scraping rock vocalists who appears to have hung onto the upper end of his range. :D

    It's a shame that Kansas (as well as many other bands from the 70's) didn't think of filming their shows when they were at the top of their game and selling out large arenas. I have recently been watching a lot of Pink Floyd videos, and there is a multitude of live video clips of The Floyd performing back in the late '60's and early 70's and this was years before Dark Side of The Moon was released and long before they started selling out large arenas. (The best of the Floyd videos is The Live in Pompeii video which is a recording of a live performance, but with no audience.) Pink Floyd was not the sole exception either. Bands like Kiss and Queen video-taped a lot of their shows from the 70's and early 80's. I just hope a good video of Kansas at The Canada Jam (the entire show) will one day surface. I would really like to see a good copy of the Song For America video at The Canada Jam although I'll settle for what's out there.

    People comment on Steve's outfit. He was wearing alot more then than over half the musicians wear now. The women especially. Some of them couldn't sing their way out of a paper bag. They just don't wear anything much and that sells tickets.

      I am Steve’s age and back then those shorts were very cool. My husband wore those and he was a pretty sexy guy!

    Steve Walsh at his prime was unbelievable. John E. was an excellent replacement for Steve when he left. Both singers had the best vocals EVER!.

    Kansas are definitely great musicians. They’re musicians not rock stars. That’s why they put out so many good songs success didn’t go to their heads.Awesome band with great vocals.

    As far as Kerry throwing it away for religion. Yeah, maybe, but he had a lot of success pursuing his solo career. And then regrouping with his original band mates (aka original Kansas per se), and forming Protokaw with last year's release 'Forth' being their best to date. Stellar music if you're looking for Kansas type music because Kansas won't be putting out any new music anytime soon. Walsh is content playing the old stuff and that's fine too.
