I took notice of BCC/BCU in 1985 and the band was at the bottom of the barrel as far as HBCU. When Mr. Wells took over, he took the Wildcats to the level they are now (one of the best). In my opinion BCU is the most complete marching HBCU bands. I am a die-hard Jukebox fan and I am giving them their props.
BCU didn't sound better because they are bigger. They sounded better because their phrasing, blend, and pitch was better. Steady and constant flowing air is important, in addition to what part of the chord you're playing, and how that corresponds to your instrument. If I'm playing the 3rd of the chord, but my instrument itself is sounding the 6th partial (sharp), then i got to "lip it down" in order for that chord to ring "waveless".
I wish more bands understood the concept of Pure Harmony. It's not unison loud lines that make your band louder, it's the harmony. lol... it's just that simple
I think both bands were good. Furthermore, Mr. Wells received his graduate training from Norfolk State University. He was there when I was in graduate school. Knowing this, I take pleasure that Mr. Wells has some Spartan Pride as well!!!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE, how when NSU played to their strength of playing a VERY technical piece, BCU instead of trying to play the technical game, reverted to THEIR strength of musicality and playing a ballad! Big ups to both programs!
Both bands sounded good, but I gotta go with BCU...their sound almost made me have an eargasm. Dynamics, phrasing, blending within the sections. They give you that true MEAC sound. I also liked their song selections better.
I like NSU but let's be real BCU based on sound alone was light years better. I"m not a fan of BCU they bore me with their song selection but the product coming out those horns are just better. I can only comment on part 1 haven't checked out part 2. People stop using the song selection card when another band clearly sounds better. Another thing stop talking that crap about it depends on what you like bull crap.
I know exactly what it's about. I have a high school band of my own. No need to get serious, i was just pokin fun that's all. BCU is a very clean and percise band, and he clearly stands out. I didn't say the dude sucked as a drummajor. I was just pointing out the fact that in that SEA of precision, he stands out lol calm down.
NSU was good for the size. They were nearly as powerful as BCU and i love their broad range of musical showmanship. The Latin song was so nice. Normally I would give NSU against most bands; but Bethune is not most bands. BCU continually demonstrates their musical talent and entertain as well; a weak point for NSU. I would love to see BCU play more complex music. As great as you guys are I believe that is one shortcoming in the program. Mad respect for both schools but BCU got this one.
being a drum major isnt about dancing...its about leading your band with leadership skills and pushing members to give 110% thats where black people fuck up..and yes I am black marched at scsu but also did carolina crown drumcorps...
The sad part is that this was a very average Legion. If bcc is the pinnacle of hbcu bands, this should of been a slaughterhouse. That obviously wasn't the case. Oh yeah, I was there...
Both Bands sound great. Two different approaches to music. All about preference. Both are music first programs versus power programs. Observations: camera appears closer to BCU based on stadium rails; BCU is beginner so a broader sound is natural; BCU's phrasing is on point; NSU accents are on point.
in my opinion no one can argue that both bands sound very clear. Cookman is very powerful in sound, very musical. However, I think that some of the arrangements could be better and they should not play their concert position songs too long. sometimes they get boring. and the dance routines need to be more thorough. they do more talking and don't back it up. all in all, they are both great marching bands, with Cookman having more consistency each year like all the great marching bands do.
BCU doesnt get invited to superbowls, BOTBs, and commercials because of the 5th QTR. They are a HALFTIME performing band. 5 QTR is how many songs a band can remember thats it.
The reason why Norfolk sounds as loud as they do is because of their use of microphones in the stands.(amplifies their sound) If you listen carefully, you can hear the wind blowing in the mics each time they play. Don't get me wrong, some of their tunes were nice, but the actual sound on these videos was very misleading to what they really sounded like. Just imagine what BCU would've sounded like with stand mics.
No disrespect to the MEAC, but I can't listen to this whole 5th. NSU sound like a fake Southern and BCU has the simpliest arrangements. Don't get me wrong, they sound great, but playing The Ice Cream Man as a 5th song for your first song is terrible.
P. Scott you are more wrong NSU Goes Hand In Hand With JSU More Than Southern They Have A Bit Of Southern in them since Paul Adams was at southern he was also at Jackson State You Also Mr.Bethea Who Was At JSU and Ms.Sanders Who Was At Alcorn
Im sorry but after watching S.U vs J.S.U battle in the swac this just sounds like rubbish. BCU IS TO DAM BIG TO SOUND LIKE 50 PIECES. # Where is the power. they would get ran out the stadium with that mess.
Im a little disappointed that NSU played careful here. Why y'all holding back. Even at 3:43 y'all holding back...you can here it

Cookman's Vocals are louder than NSU

BCU's sound is undeniable, no question. I just wish their song selection was better. This is a 5th quarter that will go down in the hall of fame.
I love BCU but once you've heard them once you hear everything.. They sound great tho
NSU displayed excellent musicianship when they played the Spanish song.
Norfolk needs to go to Honda. As much as I love being in the PRIDE, i love NSU's band as well. I would love to see them at Honda
I agree Chemist....is it me or BCU just sounds better and better every yea?
Its you. How can you sound scared? Basing sound off of you tube? I was at the game, NSU was not scared of BCU. SMH.
Man I love both these of bands.they both have their own style I am just glad to see this battle
Both bands sounded good, but I gotta go with BCU...their sound almost made me have an eargasm. Dynamics, phrasing, blending within the sections. They give you that true MEAC sound. I also liked their song selections better.
Lol you on every post on BCU nuts 😂😂😂💯

I wish someone had a tape or dvd of this entire game!

I like how NSU stuck "Hot Butter" in that first song.
@callystarr nah it's just you. Bcc has been sounding exactly the same since '97..
whats the name of the first song nsu played?
BCU song selection in the 5th is a joke..... props to NSU for having a book with real songs and not "1-4 quarters songs"
Man "Ice Cream Man" just slaps everyone with sound!! I love it.
Bcu took this one
I really hope NSU makes the trip down this fall. I will make that trip if so. Great job to both programs
@randomTAUghts hard means better ?
What is the latin song NSU played? that ish sounded good
jstnhbbrd Tiger Of San Pedro
If I'm not mistaken, the latin song NSU played was Tiger of San Pedro... it's a beast song
Matt Collins yea it was
Tiger of San Pedro
what's the name of the song at 5:11
being a drum major isnt about dancing...its about leading your band with leadership skills and pushing members to give 110% thats where black people fuck up..and yes I am black marched at scsu but also did carolina crown drumcorps...
How can they sound like a fake SU? NSU arrangments have several parts unike SU. NSU does not strive to be like any swac school.
legion2004 that fear when you hear a 180 piece band with much power nsu
Blunt Blowin by Lil' Wayne
I second that motion. Mr. Ice Cream Man put them in my top five college bands:)
Lets Be Real... FAMU is the ONLY competition for Bethune
@NAB4 I agree with you on that
nsu impressive
dem tubas
NSU All The Way
both bands sound nice got a a slow start though nsu song 2 alright musicianship that love went hard for bcu
The sad part is that this was a very average Legion. If bcc is the pinnacle of hbcu bands, this should of been a slaughterhouse. That obviously wasn't the case. Oh yeah, I was there...
They just need more songs..still #1 tho.
"Doin da Butt"
i kinda figured it was that, but i wanted to be sure lol
hey is it me or nsu sounded scared or sumthin
Both Bands sound great. Two different approaches to music. All about preference. Both are music first programs versus power programs. Observations: camera appears closer to BCU based on stadium rails; BCU is beginner so a broader sound is natural; BCU's phrasing is on point; NSU accents are on point.
behold?????????????????
Please look at tigarwarhawks comment

There's a drummajor on the back left that CANNOt DANCE LOL
In my opinion Norfolk got this one.. But Both very good bands and looking foward too see what they got this year (:
lol. beginner. I meant bigger.
NSU smacked me smooth in the face @ 3:43
y would u waste ur time doin dat ??
BCU doesnt get invited to superbowls, BOTBs, and commercials because of the 5th QTR. They are a HALFTIME performing band. 5 QTR is how many songs a band can remember thats it.
nsu is like my favorite band so bcu need to go back
NSU'S WHO CAN I RUN TO WAS BANANAS. VERY CEAN, VERY POWERFUL AND VERY MELODIC.
NSU killed Tiger San pedro
No direspect to the Legion, but dont they sound like a thinner Human Jukebox?
The reason why Norfolk sounds as loud as they do is because of their use of microphones in the stands.(amplifies their sound) If you listen carefully, you can hear the wind blowing in the mics each time they play. Lies lmao......wow smh str8 false.....that's camera man mic being affected by the wind.
@@Faygopapi91 right you clearly hear the wind in bcu 2nd song.. I love bands but these fanned out band fans trip me out
Lies from the pit of hell....you sound stupid. Norfolk sounds loud because they are LOUD.
You could be right....you could be wrong. Bottom line. I prefer the full rich sound of BCU.
NSU was clean AF
No disrespect to the MEAC, but I can't listen to this whole 5th. NSU sound like a fake Southern and BCU has the simpliest arrangements. Don't get me wrong, they sound great, but playing The Ice Cream Man as a 5th song for your first song is terrible.

NSU needs help....BAD!!!
BCU has absolutely no Style! No Swag they just a cooy cat of a boring lifeless FAMU. & Well check the video you can see them struggling in the swac
Bethune-Cookman University is in the MEAC, not the SWAC
chickmagnet225713 they sound nothing like famu they both have unique styles
no style, yet you want them to crank and sound like other bands. bcu and famu sound noting alike
You just compared to completely different sound only both bands sound has in common is the both has tasteful arrangements and they have a clean sound
Im sorry but after watching S.U vs J.S.U battle in the swac this just sounds like rubbish. BCU IS TO DAM BIG TO SOUND LIKE 50 PIECES. # Where is the power. they would get ran out the stadium with that mess.
