The old same matter about Toyota / Lexus: marketing, branding, socially distinguish. When you buy a Lexus you get a Toyota for 80% more money, and certain capacity to look richer or preppy. Same car, same engine, same transmission, same pieces (the have 99% the same spare parts), the same or almost the same chassis and suspension, different exterior and/or interior design... but deffinitely 99% same car, with other suit. That's why people who really really know about cars never buy a Lexus.
I'm sure is the opposite, after some time is not the numbers that count, but how you like staying while driving. If everybody thinks it like you they will stick with the cars from the 90".
I don't know if Lexus has 99% parts commonality with an equivalent Toyota, but yes, they are substantially the same. People who want reliable, durable transportation with a decent level of refinement will spring for the Toyota. And those people who are willing to spend more to impress others will go for the Lexus.
wheel base is significantly different. so not pretty much the same cars. from the handling perspective. I agree that they are sharing high amount of components. yes. same as audi and skoda. and many other cars/brands.
