    This is very timely for me. I've recently realized that what's being called mindfulness meditation is object-oriented, while rinpoche's style, awareness meditation, is subject-oriented. When I meditate using awareness meditation, thoughts and feelings sometimes dissolve. In my mindfulness experience before, I focus on these thoughts and I get lost in them still.

    • @willyouwright
      @willyouwright 2 года назад +3

      do they dissolve or are you just focusing past them.. Ignorance looks exactly like focusing. I think basking in them and letting observations pass freely is educational.. Its ok to get lost in thoughts.. Practice getting really lost in them and coming back.. Notice that something is able to move that focus around.. its not part of the focus.. Try and figure out or watch what is doing the observing..

      @@willyouwright They dissolve, they sort of die down or quiet down, all the while my focus shifts to "the center" with awareness itself and it "expands" its reach, and for a moment my mind quiets. And I've been meditating for years now, and only got glimpses of this.
      I know what it feels like to be lost in thought and then recognizing that, then going back to the subject of meditation (like breath). That was most of my experience with mindfulness.

      The pull of thoughts often begins with suffering, which in turn begins with ignorance. When lost amongst the trees, the goal is not always to escape the forest, but to observe the object of attachment -- the common thread; the inner conflict.

      @@anujajoshi9548 One way is to back up and let the scene unfold. Object-oriented focuses on the perceptions, the feelings. Awareness steps back or out, to see the happenings; to see the way perceptions become feelings become reactions.

      Yes, a special thanks to Rinpoche. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to Buddhists.

    Your 1st video for me. Showed up in my feed, I wasn't sure for a sec when I saw the monk's robes (didn't know if this was for lay people) but I'm glad I clicked. You've explained the two practices very simply. Thank you for clarifying some of the questions I've been holding for a while. I practice Vipassana which is about object awareness and am a follower of Mooji who points to the subject. I'm drawn to the latter. Both are helpful in grounding and finding yourself. One is more direct.

      Isiah 6:2,3 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory./Inspiration+The heavenly beings proclaim the glory of God. Seraphim is translated "burning ones, " and they are some kind of heavenly being. They proclaim holy, holy, holy the Lord is. They say that He is the holiest. The earth exhibits how glorious He is because His very breathe created it. Go look outside. Look at the grass, trees, and the sky. Each is a miracle. Amazing! God's glory surrounds us all the time. We just have to open our eyes and look at it. If you're struggling to see it, then just listen to the birds chirping - God gave them their voices too. The birds' song glorifies God./Prayer+Lord, the stars glorify You. The birds sing Your praise. Heavenly beings proclaim Your holiness. Rocks would cry out in praise if we remained silent. You are worshiped by all Your creation. You made the grass green, my eye to see color, and the cow to eat the grass. Your creation is more complex than I fathom. You reign over Your creation, and You are a good king. I bow before You as king. You are the king of my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

    There are three states of mind. 1.Aware--2. Aware that we think-or exist-and 3. 'Aware that we are Aware' that we think or exist. It is this last state, 'aware that we are aware,' which holds a secret. Who or what is it that is 'aware' of being aware'? Just answer this one question, and you've transcended energy matter space and time. The 'aware' part of being aware, is omnipresent, unchanging, has no location in space or time. Does not judge, criticize, condemn, praise, love, feel, for it is only a formless eternal witness, our soul, the creator if you will, the agency which manifests matter energy space and time. Spend time with this part of yourselves, and be astonished. Who is it that is 'watching' the watcher? That knows the knower?

    • @davidphillips8919
      @davidphillips8919 2 года назад

      @@CarlosLlanderal Good question. We take 'awareness' for granted. We know we have awareness, but to be aware of being aware is a matter of just some observation. I see my hand. I'm aware I see my hand. I am aware that at one earlier point in time, I was aware of seeing my hand, I am now aware of being aware that I am looking at my hand. There are different ways to state it, to view it. You might find one that works better. It's like the strange feeling we get when we look at ourselves in a mirror with a second mirror, and shift it slightly so that we can see many of ourselves simultaneously. Anyway, the idea is to stay present with the first 'aware' that I am aware of being aware, and staying with that. It's weird, strange but eventually it is reveling that some part of ourselves is changeless, timeless, formless. It's even a little startling at first. There are other things we can do to discover our formlessness, like I did at first when I chanted a personal mantra 1008 times. This opened the door and I discovered I was a formless being. The other way takes longer. Don't add anything to your life. Only take away. We are already enlightened, but the scripts in our minds, the mental construct, keep us entangled, bound to identity, and all of them should go. Then more clarity emerges about our true nature.

      @@CarlosLlanderal I do understand. Anxiety definitely gets in our way. I relate to you because I have have intolerable anxiety myself. If I had known this about you, I would have answered you a little differently as I have others in the same boat. See, spiritual gains are almost impossible when the mind is disturbed. I had all the major visions, yet, it did nothing to relieve my unconscious fears and anxieties. It was all a charade, yet, it wasn't. I've always been self-destructive, believing myself to be unworthy, undeserving, of happiness, success, etc., less than others, not enough, and none of this changes for me with any metaphysical visions, because the 'source' of these issues were never addressed. I was an alcoholic, drug addict in the 70's, and became sober, studied Hinduism, and though I had 'visions' nothing was happening on the inside. I thought, doesn't anyone else see this? Yes, meditation is beneficial, as can be demonstrated by brain scans today, but I couldn't believe it, everyone was on a 'pink' cloud while I was in the pits. In the early 90's I got toxic poisoning from my paint business, more self-destructive behavior, and it damaged my brain badly. I began having mini strokes in 2010, and seizures in 2013 and an MRI reveled brain damage caused by toxin exposure. It can take years for brain damage to show up from chemical exposure, but all my symptoms were immediate, during and long after exposure. It causes me horrible anxiety, not only from the effect of solvent and paint, but from what is generated from the unconscious mind, as I had yet found a way to resolve my self-destructive tendencies, and my self-worth suffers. I'd searched through the 70's up until a few years ago to find the answers, and now I know the 'real' why. The 'unconscious' mind, stores a recorded history of repressed moments of physical/emotional pain, incidents which causes us to 're-act' to a present time stimulus in response to an incident which happened many years ago. I can go into this if you find yourself trapped by past repressed painful incidents.
      Remember, if you see your behavior doing something you don't like, that is a sign you are being 'compelled' by your unconscious.

    Thank you for this video, however is mindfulness actually tight?? I think mindfulness and awareness are very closely related, if not the same, and mindfulness may not be as constricting, as this video implies. I find that just watching the breath, or any form of mindfulness, rather than focusing on concentration, just emphasizes on calming the mind and not indulging in thoughts too much. As osho said, i quote, "Neither indulge, nor suppress. Just observe." Which indeed has helped me a lot.

    That has been my experience as well, only I prefer to use a different descriptor. Mindfulness indeed is an activity within the subject-object playground. And every time that you place your attention on an object, it reinforces the existence of a subject. Subject-object are necessary complements of each other; one requires the presence or appearance of the other.
    On the other hand, and when Being Aware of Being Aware (my preferred descriptor to "Awareness") is taking place, there is no subject-object element to it. Being Aware is not an object; therefore, no subject is required and no subject is present. Your mileage may vary, of course, and is most welcome to.

      An example of awareness (or lack thereof) , I can illustrate through a story about my nextdoor neighbor. He was trying to put back together his air filter box on his wife's car, and became flustered, and tried to force the cap back into place, pushing down hard on the mass airflow sensor. I tried to tell him he was going to break it, and he just ignored me, cursing and yelling. Of course, the thing snapped in half, and his project was a failure. I walked away shaking my head thinking, now there's a complete lack of awareness.

      I agree with you. I just wanted to impart this information to Buddhists. thanks.

    Once in my teens, once in my 20s, I experienced a tranquil setting without meditation or intent. It felt as though the top of my head was opened up, and I could see and experience everything, all around me. That second time I held onto it for well over a year, in a constant bliss state. Very nice! But it seemed more important to 'go back into the world.' Now I miss that bliss, a lot, but sometimes, if I get really quiet, _it's right there beside me,_ so I know I'm still on the Right Path.

    He is right.. Mindfulness is almost impossible. I practiced mindful eating, where in we focus on the flavour of the food, ingredients of the food, texture of the food, chew properly so that we exactly know when our stomach is full.. But while doing so, many a times the mind shifts it's thoughts, maybe a random song, the presentation at the office or a TV show..I hope this is the case with many of us

    • @davidphillips8919
      @davidphillips8919 2 года назад +10

      Yes, I don't practice mindfulness the way they teach, but one technique is to take 10-20 minutes to eat one bite, that'll slow down the process, force you to tune in more, but it sounds agonizing. The optimum way to be mindful, is to get rid of the distractions in our lives which take us from the present moment. Make sure we sleep, eat right, resolve what might be upsetting us. Consciously letting the past and future go. If a painful memory comes up, notice it, embrace it in the moment, with the intent on locating it's source later and going over it a few times. Contact only the sensory data, what you see, hear, taste, touch, etc and not the memory of who or what the scene was about. It is the 'sensory' data within the memory itself that was gathered by the senses of perception but could not be analyzed because it was too painful, and the mind is looking to reanalyze this perceptual data to form correct conclusions from it, and store the experience away as a file.

      Agree. And there is one Rinzai Zen practice I use to exhale slowly and empty totally all breath from the lower lung/abdomen area - figuratively speaking. 3 breaths per minute more or less. It takes concentration where the mind ceases to wander. Do this for 10 minutes and longer and then all I am aware of is uninterrupted awareness itself - certainly not any breath. Breath as the object dissolves/becomes awareness itself.

      The trick is to be aware of the shifting mind and do nothing about it. Thus awareness must and will be introduced into mindfulness, and there are no more problems of distraction. This kind of awareness is found in meditation when the object of meditation disappears while doing nothing for it to re-appear....

    One thing I'd like to say though is about the word "Mindfulness". It has now been used in so many ways that we need to explain what we mean by it. For me, since it's originally translated from sati (Pali) or smrti (Sanskrit), I take it to mean "remembering".

    Awareness is also important to not be solution-oriented (to avoid helplessness). Why choose to not be aware because we don't have a solution to a problem? Why be so individualistic and take responsibility alone?
    When enough people are aware, solutions come from the group.
    It avoids pyramidal suppremacy!

    My experience that both kind of meditation is nature and spontaneous. On the end both ways are marge and same. Example, first start with open conscious and then in your consciousness some emotion or problem repeat. Now your focus change and discover from where this emotion comes, what is reason etc...(Patanjali: "Concentration is constantly flow of information about object"). On the end when we discovery the root of thought this thought disappear.( Patanjali: When we discover the root of cittavritti, it stops). We can have also focus on some God and his behaviour, but the key word is interes, so all is naturally. If our interes is strong, all other thoughts don't have power.
    On the advance level when all ego-thougts-feelings are quite your open consciousness are spontaneously start focus on inner peace, emptiness.... When mind feels peace, infinity it naturally be so interest for it that all other thougts don't have power and disappear, so open consciousness is in the same time very focused on the one point without effort.

    Awareness: perceiving the world without generating any thoughts (the real form of meditation). Therefore, there is no Effort, no choice and no discrimination (all of these require generation of thoughts).
    Mindfulness: Sustaining some thoughts (about some object in the mind or a concept) in the present moment. This object or concept of the mind in mindfulness is an image in the conscious filed; these thoughts are generated from past memories stored in the brain. So, it really is not the 'Present moment.' Sustaining thoughts require effort, which requires energy and complex thought generation. This method does not work in the way they are told it does. Neither does meditation.
    Meditation: Exercising some discipline to focus on an object internally or externally. Discipline involves generation of thoughts, focusing on an object involves generation of thoughts. So, the mind is not really calm in many ways. Meditation and mindfulness have similarities.

    How I see “awareness” now..a Loch Ness monster. It is a monster & demon, you can be aware of surroundings, can brain focus on staying in the moment.. but it means s..h..i..t if you can’t be heart honest vulnerable accountable for your life & truths in your life.
    Awareness is an avoid addiction without accountability.

    Wonderful teaching. But I need it more practical. "As I was meditating on the cushion"-description. So I sit there and always "just" try to be there for whatever is presenting itself? So I don't specifically concentrate on my breanth, I take whatever comes and just recognize my awareness. Is that right? I know, what he means with narrow, when he speaks about the objectoriented mediation.

    Sometimes we say in a furious way "I just can not understand it!" & then we workout it out ie understand it (one way or another) resulting in the pain being cured.
    After doing this a zillion times (1000 lives) we have complete understanding.
    = WISDOM.
    The need for pain (pain body) has done its job.
    So at last we can get the fuck out of here & go to the big dance hall in the sky where everyone dances without treading on each others toes.

    Still don’t get what the difference is between awareness and mindfulness, it sounds like the same thing to me. If you are aware, you are mindful of something, and if you are mindful of something you are aware of it. Is this a trick question?

  • @kdwyermedia

    paying attention to something is not awareness . one splits the awareness from the mind. it's a state, so awareness state. Mindfulness is just popcorn buddhism anyway so there's no connection whatsoever. this guy doesn't have proper energy language.

  • @tokenpop2598
    @tokenpop2598 2 года назад

    That's a very clear distinction between object-oriented and subject-oriented forms of meditation. Unfortunately, it isn't really correct to designate mindfulness meditation in that way. I think Rinpoche is really talking about what traditionally are called samatha meditation practices, which are usually said to have an object of attention, at least in their early stages. Mindfulness practices can be done in that way, but they can also be done in a more subject oriented way: that is certainly the flavour of Jon Kabat Zinn's teaching.

    Clickbait title & missguiding explanation. For a beginner anything can't be awareness, it has to be an object. After later stages when one teaches themselves to be aware then eventually they learn to be aware about wandering thoughts then one can be aware anything else as body, sensations even with open eyes, you just can't misguide people to leave object, they'll never learn to be mindful or aware.

    I disagree. I think when using words such as the ones that are the focus of this video, we need to remember that each individual has their own interpretation of what those words mean. Trying to lock the exact meaning or interpretation is the wrong way. More articulation and open discussion would be a better format to convey the message. There is context, situational usage, and individual history attached to words that can not be separated and will be infinitely various for not only different people, but fir the sane person in different situations.

      Yes, a truly beautiful explanation.

    Excellent. It's funny we lack awareness of awareness!
    And same for love, it should be an intransitive word. We don't need an object, we just shine our light, and it touches everything without selection.
    The important is who is aware and who loves. Then it shines around.
