Can we take a moment to appreciate how young Philip looks in this video? 🥹 And that soft-spoken voice ... he could probably talk about server crashes and still make it sound soothing. It’s like Second Life ASMR 😂
My avatar years ago was very scary looking and I ended up going on a break from secondlife back in 2010 and shortly after joining as I was very confused and had no clue what to do in Secondlife. By the time I returned to secondlife in 2018 my friend gifted me a Maitreya body and helped me get a mesh head straight away because my avatar made him feel uncomfortable and it really scared him. It is amazing how much secondlife has developed over the years because of the creators within Secondlife and their creations.
As someone who has been in SL since 2003, I recently passed the halfway point in my life where I have now been a resident longer than I wasn't. It's incredible how this platform is still kicking after so many years, I'm happy to have been a part of it throughout.
I'll be 20 years in SL this next New Years Eve. I was the only night shift worker for a group of local banks and worked part from the office, drove home and did the rest there. They didn't care what I did during the time I waited for things to process as long as balances were updated and correct by the time the banks opened. So being the lone worker on New Year's Eve 2005 going into 2006 and after my drive home...I started Second Life. A guy I met inworld and partnered with for 2 years, is still a very close friend, and we finally met in RL this past August.
@secondlifespectrum 1st he lives in Texas, I was in Colorado. I am 18 years older, and the attraction for both was strong. So just the age difference alone made me stand offish for meeting in RL. If he fell for someone in real life, I wanted him happy. Secondly, I had already gone through 2 leg surgeries, and it turns out I later had 3 more and now usually get around via wheelchair. I was there when his mother passed, and after the second year, we broke up a bit mad at each other...2 more years later, my mother passed, and I put it in my SL picks. He was the first to offer condolences, and we started talking again, without the whole being a couple thing. Turns out everything else about our friendship, non-partnered, just gels. We've played many online games together and already have plans for when Light No Fire is released. I moved to Las Vegas and invited him for a visit. He came with his sister, and I live with my brother. My brother and I, at various times, had lived here before and knew the city and surrounding area, so we showed them around. He plays many more games than I do, but on the ones I play, if there's an Ameesa (my usual game name), he's usually around, too. He's usually one of the top players, I'm usually building or sorting inventory, lol.
As someone who was late in finding SL (only in the last 4 years) this was very interesting to see the history in a well put together way. Thank you for the hard work!
Thanks for this awesome look back and the evolution over the years. I have been in SL since 2008 and I can definitely appreciate where we have been and continue to look forward to the future of the platform.
I started my Second life journey in december 2006, 18 years ago and I started on orientation island. Seeing this really is like taking a time machine back then. Ohhh how much has changed since then, windlight, sculpty, pre-liquid mesh, to today.
I've been a mesh creator since 2005 now. It started with skateboards on IMVU lmao. Then I started working with animation and met Vista Barnes, where we collabed to make ''TheModelFactory'' and now, 2 years fresh on Second Life, I see he is the premiere AO maker, makes me SO proud to see!
2007 was the big boom for RL businesses to join SL. Back in the day I DJed for some big brands launch parties in SL but those companies are gone now as the RL economy tanked a bit too making virtual worlds not as interesting to them.

IKR, SO HANDSOME AND STILL HANSOME 2025 LOL
I came into SL in 2007 and still log in daily. It's been amazing to watch the changes over the years.

That was the documentary that got me into SL back in 2007 and an academic career built around SL that has lasted 17 years

What an amazing story! Why did it take so long to meet up in RL?

It was quite amazing to go back in time. I removed some inappropriate parts of the documentary ... that was quite funny though.

Thank you Prisqua, it was very good. I've seen the doc but your breakdown was very well done.
Amazing work. I never watched the original interview but loved your version with commentary.
Oh I saw my shop in the video lmao. Yay
Incredible, what will S.L be like in 25 years?
I don't think it will be without a huge jump in the current userbase. If it is, everyone is paying a subscription to log on.
