I think that was one of the best things about that part of Zuko’s story arc. He always had honour, there were always lines he wouldn’t cross. He was on a quest to restore something he never lost, but he had misunderstood honour as being tied to the respect of his father.
Because Ozai knew Zuko valued his honor, which is why he preyed on that and told Zuko to go find it. Being a child Zuko thought he'd lost his honor, when the truth was always his dad couldn't handle a goody two shoes in the family that cared about any virtue.
Zuko acted honourably at every corner but one, and then he immediately came back to the path with Iroh. The most obsessed with regaining his honour was the most honourable of them all.
That's what makes Zuko the most suitable person in his family (aside uncle Iroh that is not interested anyway) for the role of Fire Lord. He worked hard to regain his onor, therefore he is the one who will reddem his nation and restore its honor and balance to the world with Avatar Aang

He's prideful, sure, and very naive and genuinely gaslit. But he's never been shown to be stupid. He's socially stunted, but he was a master tactician even as a kid. It was kinda his downfall for a while, lol, because the Gaang's lack of solid planning made it really hard for him to get a beat on what they were up to.
