Her feet are the way toph sees so she keeps her feet up. It’d be pretty distracting feeling everything around you while you’re trying to sleep. It’s kinda like why we shut our eyes when We’re trying to sleep
Toph's first journey episode showed a major clash because of their personality differences and different upbringing. It was Iroh who warmed Toph up to working as a team and depending on her friends, while at the same time remaining fiercely helpful to the others.
Also it happened at a key point in her arc. She had just proven that not even a family-sent bounty hunter can take her back against her will, and she invented metalbending. She had proven to herself she *was* in control, and thus was able to feel safe enough to let go of some control to work as a team. Before then she was terrified of being under anyone else’s control. I mean she fled with the Gaang in the first place to get away from her sheltered life. She just didn’t understand how to be on a team and thus had issues acclimating. Which is what Iroh helped with.
Basically she does that so she can actually sleep and not feel every tiny vibration. When in enemy territory, she’ll use her hands so when an enemy arrives, she’s the first to know and the squad can stance up
I like that Toph only naturally feels her surroundings when it's relevant to the plot. They get snuck up on a lot in the show and Toph usually says nothing (Hama is a prime example). There are also a lot of cases where she should say whether or not someone is lying but doesn't
I mean if she was constantly on edge 24/7 she’d burn herself out. But if she’s specifically sleeping with one eye open (one hand on the ground) yeah she’ll notice something. No human can constantly monitor their surroundings perfectly.
Man I can't believe I missed that. Toph is my favorite character. How did I miss her keeping her feet of the ground while she sleeps. Her keeping her feet of the ground while sleeping is the same as a normal person closing their eyes while trying to sleep. She can't turn off the seismic sight. It's active all the time. She developed this ability as an extension of her senses and she can't turn it off anymore than we can stop hearing. So it makes sense to sleep she would have to disconnect her feet from the earth. Even in the earth tent, she slept on her stomach, I suspect with the purpose of keeping the soles of her feet pointed away from the earth but she could still feel vibrations through her hands if the vibrations where strong enough.
Whenever I hear somebody talk about they're needing to be more strong, independent female characters, I always remind them of Toph and Katara. Ya, they were the girls of the group. But that definitely didn't define them. They felt like they not only had there own agency but they were core members of the group not just people who were shoehorned in

Bro, that’s not the reason it’s because the only way for tough to close her eyes is basically to put her feet up and everything that concerns movement because the way she sees is feeling the vibrations
makes perfect sense of why her hands and feet are off the ground, so she wouldn't have to sense anyone while she tries to sleep, but if in enemies' territory, that's when she have them on the ground, on lookout while have a nap.
Toph puts her feet up because that’s her way of relaxing and basically closing her eyes, her senses can prevent her from having a good sleep if her feet touch the ground
She sleeps like that because of her hands or feet are on the ground she can see and feel everyone walking around since she’s blind and all, so it’s more of a way for her to relax and when she has her hands and feet’s on the ground that’s to watch for people coming even though it’s less relaxing for her
I’m curious how Toph developed this strong fight or flight instinct. I can understand blindness making an average person more alert or fearful, but we know Toph has lived a life of complete and total safety. Surely she didnt learn to be fearful of nighttime enemies while living in a protected palace. Is there some hidden story of trauma that we haven’t heard yet?
I’ve explained it in other replies but for one, she deeply needed control. A private tent only she can use is the ultimate control. But also remember there, she’s new to the world. _Because_ of the sheltered life she probably has little experience outside in the wild except for the tunnels she met the Badgermoles in.
