I think Iroh is really just half of the story.
Yes, Iroh’s limitless wisdom and knowledge was the sole reason Zuko even considered redemption, but Ozai is also important to Zuko’s parenting. Ozai was the worst father, and there are only a few examples of worse. Children with bad parents can grow up to learn from their parents’ mistakes.
So it just isn’t a surprise that Zuko is just a good father, considering he’s seen the best & worst parenting of the nation.

If Zuko truly learned anything from Iroh, he should know that operating in extremes is a flawed philosophy. Being overly soft has just as many issues as being overly harsh, even if said problems manifest in different ways. Balance is key to all parts of life, and as such, I doubt a mature Zuko would be one to just go "don't be like dad" with no deeper thought. This isn't to say Ozai wasn't a terrible father, but Zuko should ponder what made his father a failure instead of mindlessly assuming everything he did was a factor to his downfall.

While the others had physically absent or emotionally distant parents/parental figures, Zuko had an awful father to learn how deep the damage a parent can do and some prime “what not to do,” but he also had the best father figure to learn the power of an unwavering support system for a child, when to take a step back and let them make their own mistakes to learn from while still being there for them, and when to raise your voice (but never your hand (or fire)) to stop them before they make the kind of mistakes they can’t take back, and most importantly, how to be a model of love and forgiveness and a base for personal growth.

I see the not having parents thing used to excuse Aang a lot, but that's a slap in the face to people who grow up without parents and learn to become great parents. Aang had a golden child and that's messed up. He spent time teaching Tenzin his air nomad ways and I think in some respects by putting that kind of pressure on Tenzin to carry the weight of an entire culture on his shoulder was messed up too. You could see it gave him a failure complex. I get frustrated with Aang about this as well because Aang does have experience with the pressures of responsibility and he put that kind of weight all on the shoulders of his son. Aang did spend quality time with Tenzin as well though like building sand castles and mundane non-bender things he could have done with Bumi and Kya. The fact that they have no positive memories to pull from and just a legacy speaks volumes about Aang's neglect of his eldest two. Not having parents isn't an excuse, if he could do the quality time stuff with Tenzin he could do it for his other kids. Also Katara did have parents so she knew what parental love was supposed to look like and never put her foot down on Aang's behavior. Aang wasn't an abusive parent, but if his eldest two have no memories of quality time then he was absolutely an absentee father and that is bad parenting, not flawed, let's not sugar coat it. Neglecting your oldest two, making your youngest the golden child, putting the weight of a culture on a child, not creating core memories by spending the same quality time with all of your children. If it wasn't Aang but a normal person this would be bad parenting. Let's call a spade a spade.

Okay but there’s a good theory about why Aang favored Tenzin.
Kya and Bumi, while they were the children of an Airbender (and the avatar, at that), didn’t seem all too interested in airbending culture. Even as adults in LOK, we can see each of them actively not participate in activities. They even express how they weren’t all that interested in it as kids and how Katara may have understood.
I think this is pretty plausible, as Aang would probably not take his children on trips they weren’t interested in if they weren’t going to really benefit from it. They only missed their dad and brother. They stood on the fact that they’d left without them in the show, but maybe they only realized that as adults.
Then again, our amazing Avatar may have just had a flaw 🤷‍♀️

The thing* about Aang as well is that he was raised by a village. First time considering this but he might have left the other two alone because in his mind they were being cared for by his wife while he cared for the future of his people, Tenzin. To him, not being cared for by specifically him would not have made a difference.
Idk what Katara was thinking though. Maybe they fought about it but Aang couldn't fully get it and Katara decided that instead of trying to make him understand the normal family dynamic, she'd just focus her efforts on the other two kids. Or maybe she was equally as blind to this as Tenzin was.

Surely wasn't the case. You almost had it but Kya and Bumi were apathetic to the air Nomad culture so he just taught Tenzin everything he knew, traveling, etc. If Kya and Bumi were as interested as Tenzin he would have equally spent time with them as wirh Tenzin. He wasn't a bad father, Aang had a huge responsibility of restoring a whole nation and you can't expect him to do that alone. Plus, as the case may be, Tenzin became the only air bender and who's better equipped than Aang to teach his son?

    • @Zazabazaa
      @Zazabazaa 6 месяцев назад +26

@@Joshmirhez What? Kya and Bumi literally talk about how they felt neglected by their dad because he'd go off on trips without them. They wanted to be a part of everything but felt excluded. Bumi even elaborates on this, saying he never truly felt like he was a part of his dad's culture, but now that he has air bending skills, maybe he can be more included. It's a part of Tenzin's character arch, realizing that his father doted on him and failed to give the same attention to the others, and the others learning not to take out their issues with their dad on their little brother.
I know you want to see Aang as a good dad, but you can't take away this very glaring flaw in his character. He was good to Tenzin but neglected his other children in his pursuit of restoring his culture simply because they weren't airbenders.

@Joshmirhez It's never a child's job to show interest in their culture..its the parents job to ensure their children know their culture regaurdless of if they want to or not. Kids who grow up in cultures outside their ethnic one will naturally push back and prioritize the culture of where they are growing up, so the parents need to work harder to instill the values and teach the history of their motherland to their kids. It's also important to remember that culture isn't just in long lectures..which is what it seems Bumi and Kya were disinterested in..its in food and holidays and music and art there are many ways to teach culture to your children. Also Aang himself didn't pay attention to the stories of his culture..in the comic with old Iron, he and Gyatso were playing around so Aang never learned the reason behind the Yang Chen festival..so his kids took after him in that regard. Aang could have included his other kids in their own culture in ways that wouldn't bore them but he didn't. Bumi himself states that he never felt like he was part of the air culture..that was his father's fault because he should have always felt a part of it regaurdless of his inability to bend.

Do you recall what Bumi and Kya said to Tenzin. "Classic airbending technique: always cutting and running when things get tough." That line speaks volumes about their relationship with Aang and Tenzin and the disconnect they have from that part of their culture. Maybe they weren't interested, but Aang didn't seem to go out of his way to make them feel included either. He was teaching Tenzin about the air nomad practices but he was also building sand castles on Kyoshi Island with him. Aang knew very well how to engage in fun, non-bender activities, he could have done so with Bumi, he could have engaged Kya in waterbending. Also putting the weight of an entire culture on Tenzin's shoulders while fully understanding what the pressure of being the Avatar did to him as a child was tone deaf. Tenzin is not without emotional damage. He is constantly worried about failure and living up to an impossible legacy. Let's call a spade a spade here, Aang was an absentee, negligent, tone deaf father. People call him flawed, this isn't a flaw, this is just bad parenting. He wasn't abusive , but he was still a bad father.

@@christianbeckles8992We wouldn't call them a bad parent (as in abusive), but they aren't a good parent either.
Imagine you want to teach your kids about your religion, but some arent interested, so you take the one who IS interested to sacred sights and see the history.
To Tenzin it was amazing because he was actually interested, but not so much the other kids.
Aang could've still brought them along and had them have fun in other aspects though, and be a more present father, as doing this can make the kids feel like Tenzin is obviously favored, brewing feelings of inequality and not good enough.
So he has bad parenting moves, but just like a father working ALL the time and never spending time with their kids at all to make money and give them a comfortable life.
Doesnt guarantee they're a BAD parent in the sense of an abusive one, but a very very flawed one who needs to change their god awful parenting techniques.
So it depends on your definition of bad, most people think of it as abusive. But if you just think of it as parenting techniques, then yeah, Aang was a bad parent.
But we also didnt confirm if Aang loved his children equally, and when he was not busy teaching religion or saving the world, he still loved his other kids equally when he finally got home.
Which is the likely scenario, it's just being the last surviving member of your culture and religion, AND being the president of the entire planet kind of takes away too much time to create a ton of core memories with your kids.
You wouldn't call the president of the United States a bad parent if he focused on teaching his interested kids Christianity as the LAST SURVIVING MEMBER OF CHRISTIANITY, while also focusing on his duties as the president, resulting in not a ton of time being able to be used.
So even then, Aang wasn't a bad parent, he was a flawed parent.
Which is understandable when he has that much responsibilities, jobs, and pressure.
If anyone else was in his position of immense workload, no one would call them a bad parent for not spending equal time with all their kids. Even if that is terrible parenting technique.

I think it’s both. Zuko learned first from his father what a terrible father looks like, and then learned from Iroh what a good father looked like.
He turned out the best father not just because of Iroh or Ozai, but because he’s been shown both perspectives.

Bumi is shown to be extremely inattentive during airbending training, and judging by tenzin’s misremembering of his siblings presence during vacations they were probably welcome on the trips they just didn’t go.

Aang didn’t neglect his kids. They didn’t like hanging with him or being with him. Only Tenzin liked being with his dad. Possibly because they both shared air bending and a love for rebuilding the nomad temples history.
But to say he was a bad dad is a stretch when it’s stated in the cartoon why he hung with Tenzin more

The thing with Aang’s kids that nobody talks about is that only Tenzin was interested in learning about air nomad culture. Kya and Bumi constantly talk about how they didn’t care in the show. Those vacations weren’t just treats, they were lessons. Aang was the last air nomad and wanted so badly to rebuild them and had 2 out of three kids who didn’t care at all. Not the perfect father, but also Kya and Bumi weren’t great kids

Zuko also had a mother who did care about him quite a lot. I'm not disagreeing on Iroh being the most important figure in his life, but he also remembers his mother's warmth, so he was able to be gentle when she was young and needed more nurture, then when older came the Iroh lessons.
