Honestly I’m so glad Zuko turned out to be a great father to Izumi. With the kind of childhood he had it would’ve been easy to continue that abusive cycle. It made me smile seeing him grow and knowing how important peace and happiness were to him
indeed. I like how i can see a piece of Ursa in Izumi, despite Zuko growing largely without her. he knows that whatever responsible and amazing parenting he did to Izumi, is exactly what Ursa would do to him and Azula if she had the chance.
Clearly Zuko is the best parent out of Team Avatar. While not much is shown in LoK regarding it, what we do know based on what is, is that Zuko is very protective. He went to the Fire Nation just to make sure the Red Lotus wouldn't go after Izumi. And during the one time she spoke in Book 4, we know that Zuko taught her well
Honourable mentions (may be subject to dispute): - Unalaq (didn't care when his son got hurt) - not up for discussion - Kuvira's dad (just guessing, maybe he had his reasons for abandoning her) - Kanto (He probably didn't know Lin, but if he did, he abandoned her)
Aang never really struck me as a BAD parent, moreso a realistic one forced by circumstances: He HAD to be the Avatar, and Tenzin was gonna be burdened with continuing to rebuild the Air Nomads regardless. The Korra comics actually elaborate that Aang was loving to all his kids and very accepting of Kya's sexuality, so it's not like he's absolutely terrible.
It’s been theorized that Ozai might have had Lu Ten killed as well. He probably tipped off the earth kingdom military as to the whereabouts of Lu Ten’s platoon and they were ambushed and wiped out.
Except that wasn't a rumor regarding Azulon, Ozai himself confirms it while talking to Zuko where he said "My father, Fire Lord Azulon, had commanded me to do the unthinkable to you, my own son, and I was going to do it" Even The Search confirms that Ursa saved Zuko's life
Ozai was a terrible father to both his kids and Ursa was not there to look after Azula causing her to become unstable… Also, Unalaq deserves a spot on the list.
@-Space Core- for the time she was with the children before her banishment, she usually spent most of the time with Zuko and little to no time with with Azula. Ursa is also to be blamed since she visited Zuko ONLY before she left.
He didn't have any parental figures to learn from after the air nomads were all killed, and he desperately wanted to revive the air nation. I imagine he tried with Bumi and Kya, but when Tenzin developed airbending, he focused his attention more on him. I don't think Aang was a bad father, his three kids turned out fine , he was just flawed. It makes him a more rounded character on the whole.
He wasn't a bad father but it makes sense that he wasn't the best. Besides being the Avatar and not having time for his kids, it makes sense why he mainly focused on Tenzin, the future of the Air Nomads.
I really wonder what Iroh's dad would have done if he realized how much Iroh cared for his nephew vs Ozai. Even back then when his own son was alive, Iroh showed a lot more care and love to Zuko than Ozai ever did
You let Ozai off way too easy. If you incorporate info from the comic about Zuko's mom, it shows he was even worse. Ozai forced Zuko's mom to marry him even though she was already engaged. Then Ozai lied to her and made her think Zuko wasn't even his kid, even though he was.
To be fair, Aang did favored Tenzin over Kya and Bumi. But not in the way how Ozai favored Azula over Zuko. Even though it wasn't favoritism, he gave Tenzin more attention than his other kids. Aang loved his children equally, it's just that since Tenzin was the only child with airbending, he had to teach him Air Nomad culture in order to preserve history. Aang was so focused on preserving his culture alive, he forgot to show Bumi and Kya that he loved them too.
The Beifongs I totally understand- they didn’t want their daughter to get hurt and they worried about her, and Toph didn’t want to make the same mistake so she did the opposite of what her parents did
This is just the characters btw, obviously there are tons of parents much worse but they aren't characters, or they are but we didn't see their parenting.
@Toph Beifong It makes perfect sense. Aang didn't traditionally have parents so him being a parent would be a learning experience, he is also the Avatar not only does he have to make sure the Physical World stays in balance he also has to worry about the Spiritual World and on the top of that he had to preserve the air nations culture having to teach it all to one child before the end of his life. So realistically it makes perfect sense that he was a bit negligent toward his two eldest children.

Well, it's not uncommon among families to name their children after their grandparents. And unlike Zuko, Azula is known to have a strong sparkle in her eyes when she was born, hinting that she was going to be an exceptionally powerful firebender. And Ozai literally said that Azula was a true firebending prodigy, just like her grandfather for whom she's named. So, I understand why he named his daughter after his powerful father.
