How to Install FilterBalls.

- Reference the "How To Guide" produced from FilterBalls. Simple, safe and easy to install.
FilterBalls are easy to install. In general, follow the steps recommended by the filter housing manufacturer. Always ensure twelve inches of media above the laterals. You can mark this height on the stand pipe with a marker to ensure proper fill. If the manufacturer recommends pea gravel to support the laterals, please follow that guidance.
Direction for initial start-up with System Off:
1. Remove filter sand if current vessel has sand in it
2. Clean the sand and debris that might be lodged in the lower manifold and laterals
3. Cover the stand pipe with a plastic bag and add FilterBalls to the tank. Gently press the balls down to assure proper coverage over laterals (12 inches)
4. Close the filter as according to manufacturer instructions
5. Set filter to backwash, start and run for 30sec to 1min
6. Turn off pump, set filter to rinse and run for 30sec to 1min.
7. Turn off pump, set to Filter Mode and start filter system
8. Check pressure and record, backwash when pressure increases by 5 PSI

I first installed these at the start of LAST summer. Everything was great last year, but when I opened the pool this year and did my first cleanout I noticed the pump seemed to be running weaker than I remembered. Tank pressure seemed OK. I backwashed and rinsed a few times but was only getting clean water out of the system. I finally opened the filter and wow what a mess. Pine needles galore with plenty of other debris. I took it all apart and noticed the spokes at the bottom of the tank, the small openings were more than 50% clogged. I worked for an hour or so with a wire brush getting the openings mostly clean. I bought a new set of filter media, the old ones were nasty and I'm not putting them anywhere near my laundry machine. What went wrong? Backwashing doesn't seem to work, having to clean the spokes by hand was very time consuming, and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to clean and reuse the old media without getting tons of pine needles in my laundry machine.
Do filter balls need to be cleaned throughout the summer? If so how often? Also my sand filter held 300 lbs of sand. Do i still just add the balls only up to 12 inches? Ty for all the wonderful information!
Unless you use metal reducers or clarifiers, the only cleaning FilterBalls would need is a backwashing. Backwashing threshold is 30 days or an increase in pressure of 4 psi (measured with a working pressure gauge) whichever comes first.
If you use metal reducers or clarifiers, reduce the dosage by 2/3rds. To clean the filter media, use the filter cleaner as recommended by the additive manufacturer and follow their directions.

will the pea gravel stay put and not damage laterals when I backwash?
@@MarcusEatmon ..if pea gravel is the specification by the manufacturer of your housing.. then NO damage will result.

@@48fleetlinerolas Yes, even though a 12" tank is small should probably use a couple bags of minis.
I am using cotton balls for the first season I have noticed that once I back washed I have very little pressure coming back in the pool suggestions?
how do I know if I have enough filter balls in my filter?

The only sand housings that need pea gravel are those manufactures that specify to do so. e.g. Pentair TR series. (side entry) Pentair does not have a mechanism to support the lower lateral assembly on the Triton series (like their TA series does). So pea gravel gives that support to the lower arm.
How did they get destroyed? What happened?
So I bought your product last year. Used it for the summer and it was amazing. This year my filter pressure is doubled and not matter how much I backwash I can't get it to drop. So do I need to pull these out and wash them? How do you recommend washing them?
I wash them the same way I wash my aquarium filter media. Which btw is the same stuff. Pull them and place in a 5g bucket. Buy some bleach from the dollar store and soak them for a day and then rinse the heck out of them. The concentrated bleach will destroy all the micron algae bacteria that has built up in them which is what reduces the flow.
I was told to put pea gravel to cover laterals to prevent damage, before putting the balls in. Is this true, I didn’t do that.

I have a carvin filter system. Do I need pea gravel under the laterals to support them before I put jn filterballs?
@Debra Scott; am not aware of a Carvin Housing that requires pea gravel. But if you care to get the model number and give us a call, we'd certainly look it up for you.

@Lona Martin: The installation guidelines indicate placement within the sand housing, backwash, then rinse, then put in filter mode.
If your referring to an off line rinse prior to installation, the answer is no.

No uses las bolas filtrantes ya que la.presion de su bomba es muy fuerte y siempre tendrá ese problema, si las desea.usar use un bomba con velocidad variable y pongala en el caudal más lento, si sigue con el problema tendría que cambiar el filtro, lo cual le llevará a gastos inecesarios, entonces use mejor la zeolita..
