2 notes + UPDATE 7/10/2020!! 1. I kept this out of the video as I felt it might have been considered filler, but Xenoblade didn't have concept art for the character designs; they were modeled first before any artwork was drawn of them. They designed the clothing first & then the characters afterwards. Furthermore, Takahashi has spoken about how one of his regrets of Xenoblade was how the graphics originally look, and how they're happy to have achieved DE's graphics. This isn't an out-sourced job, this is the "original designers'" vision. You're 100% free to feel how you feel about the graphics, I totally get it, but being informed doesn't hurt. Had I known the first comments would be a race to talk about the art style then I woulda included that info in the video 2. As folks corrected me in the comments, a PAL Wii has 3 video mode: 576i50hz, 480i60hz and a 480p60hz. The resolution wasn't important, the importance was that the game runs at 25 fps anyways. The anomalies are still true as well, on PAL hardware you move faster but have a little longer load times UPDATE: Xenoblade DE received an update the other day that had a bunch of bug fixes, and also added QoL changes to 2 things I mentioned in this video. 1. the casual mode reminders are now disabled when you disable tutorial boxes. 2. The mass of side quest markers can be disabled.
Probably not a big deal for some but I've noticed the soundtrack to be inconsistent in its music choice. There are many times in Definitive Edition where the arrangement of a song will play, even if the soundtrack is set to the original and vice versa. SPOILERS AHEAD Examples include: no music when Xord kidnaps Juju, the arrangement of Engage the Enemy will always play when contronting Xord at the Ether Mines and the original An Obstacle in Our Path will always play when Egil pulls the sword out of the Bionis. I'd chalk this up to a bug, but it could be deliberate too. Kinda bugs me a bit, since I'm not the biggest fan of some arrangements. Probably not a dealbreaker for most, I just wish the soundtrack played as intended.
I learnt this from the XC2 artbook, and so I have to wonder what went wrong with the DE. Shulk, Reyn and Sharla look great but everyone else in the playable cast has pretty generic or downright silly looking faces. Dickson in particular doesn't even look higher quality, as he already looked pretty good; the only difference is that the colours and jawline look way off. Dunban's new look doesn't suit him at all. The smug grin and intense eyes from the prologue are gone. Everyone just looks less expressive and believable, and has the bloody same nose. The original models were of poor quality but they looked like people with stand-out and convincing features. On the subject of the soundtrack, what were they thinking? If you're gonna make the sound quality better, at least go as far as to make it good. All the tracks still sound very compressed and this doesn't suit the big arranged sound at all. You Will Know our Names has been robbed of its intensity, but oh look! More instruments! And those ear-piercing new vocals on Engage the Enemy are painful. (To top it all off, An Obstacle in Our Path is in the wrong key altogether and it's very offputting.) This might sound like a silly complaint because you can just set it to the original, but I just worry new players aren't getting the full experience. I love the Definitive Edition overall for other reasons, and I'm not here to say "YOUR XENOBLADE IS SHIT, FAKE FAN"; I just want everyone else to fall in love with this game the way I did, and I worry the DE robs it of some amount of charm for the sake of the illusion of polish.
@@ChrisStoneinator I played the original on the Wii all the way through, and I will say that I disagree with you on pretty much every point on the character designs and new soundtrack of DE.
@@ChrisStoneinator Dickson really didnt have much changed but Dunban? He looks great, he still has the smug grin and intense eyes and everyone else is either really expressive or just as expressive as the original (more leaning towards the former), i dont undrstand your points at all The old look being more expressive doesnt really hold much weight the models were, as you said, poor quality, so they werent that great at expressive, im guessing you are just looking back through rose tinted glasses
Much like the 3DS port of MGS3 lol, especially since that one can somehow run on Old3DS models too. These games were never intended to run on hardware like that but somehow the programmers made it work.
@@RecountDaFox1 Sadly it's not quite as fast, no. That said, it's also not egregiously slow, which is more than anyone could reasonably expect from such a port, really.
As a proud owner of all three versions, the obvious answer is the Definitive Edition. All three games are utterly fantastic (and the first game even looks slightly better on the Wii U), but the Quality of Life changes made, specifically to quest accessibility, makes the Definitive Edition the Definitive Choice.
Agreed, hell just the fact that I don't have that large Wii U screen in my hands (I didn't play it on the Wii) is a huge QOL improvement. Hope they port over The Last Story at some point too.
what do you mean a sprint button?,if you mean autorun we already have that and if you mean a button that increases the running speed you cant have that because that would break a lot of the games combat but to go faster you can use quick step gems
Hello there, my name is Gabriel and I play the character of young Noah in Xenoblade 3. It's AWESOME to see my character, to actually hear my voice and, to see the finished product! It's been an absolute privilege to be involved in this and it's VERY exciting to see everything come together in this way.
The 3ds version is definitely underrated. Despite hearing otherwise, I thought the 3d effect was well done, especially in cutscenes. It's that it was technically possible at all
It's not super effective on the XL, but, if you play on the smaller version of the New 3DS, the effect is far more prominent. The smaller 3DSes all have a much stronger sense of depth compared to the XLs for some reason. If you're a big 3DS fan, like me, then I highly recommend saving up for one of those New 3DS versions. The improved sharpness provided by the smaller screen can also be really nice and pairs well with the 3D effect (it's like going from standard definition 3D to HD3D, even though it's technically an SD resolution)
That was actually how I first experienced the game after watching Chuggaaconroy let's play the game. It has since become one of my favorite games of all time
It's also worth noting that definitive edition now has a "fashion" slot for armor so you don't have to have a mismash of armor based on stats, you can have the armor you use for stats and the armor your character model has as two different things!
Yeah, but it spoils the first big twist considering one character only has like 5 outfits unlike everyone else. They should've just shown available fashion armor as it was unlocked, otherwise you know from the second you check out those screens that one of those characters will not be sticking it out for the majority of the game
@@MK-bi1hj Maybe, the menus do kinda draw attention to the fashion screen even early on with notifications when you get new stuff, so, at the very least, it might hint to people that the member is only gonna be temporary, considering how many open slots the other characters have. Idk, just stood out to me
I'll so glad you can *turn off* the story navigation. It gets in the way when doing side quests and I enjoy the feeling of learning the path forward on my own without hand holding. Also expert mode is amazing! Because I was doing so many side quests in the original, by the time I was close to beating the story, I was too over powered. This fixes that!
One thing I noticed is that the story navigation is helpful because one thing it also does is that it displays the exclamation marks on the maps for monsters that drop side quest materials
I still remember that I got into xenoblade because I didn’t have anything else to play on my new 3ds xl & then realized he was in smash bros. Lol I loved this franchise ever since.
I love the convenience of expert mode. I never had to grind enemies a single time in my play through and when I saw a unique monster 10 levels above me I could take it out right then and there. Very useful in temporary areas with overleveled uniques.
I really like the look of the Wii game, it reminds me of Final Fantasy XII, but the UI and quality of life changes in the Switch version just really make me lean towards that one.
Definitive edition for me. I played the 3ds version and I'm still amazed with how they were able to fit all of that in there. My only gripe was his how tiny the characters are compared to playing it on a television screen. As for the definitive edition my only gripe so far is the arranged music. Some are good. But there are some that drown out parts of the song that really got your attention from the original. One example was the battle music that plays when facing a special monster.
I have the 3DS version and tested load times comparing it to someone's Wii copy. It loads the title screen, areas and cutscenes noticeably faster but takes longer to load in changes to the party, be it changing members or their gear.
I first played the game on the 3DS and absolutely loved it. Playing it again on the Switch was a whole new experience and seeing how everything looked made me emotional. I would definitely recommend the Definitive edition but I won't deny that I'm glad I got to play it first on the 3DS, seeing the upgrade was so worth it.
Art Style is preference of anyone. You can emulate the original at 1080p anyway. The Side Quest QoL improvements however, are life-changing. Also Expert Mode which let's you pace your game however you want. Definitive Edition is called like that for a reason.
I think it's pretty sad that people are so rose tinted and afraid of being called weebs that they think the original looks better than DE. It's undeniable the areas look way better and the menus do too. While I personally do understand the dislike of anime style, as I thought 2 sucked in terms of art, I think de looks a bit more cool than 2 and a bit less tropey. Also the designs are less blatantly horny and annoying
@@fluffy9071 I'm fairly confident most people who were hot on the original played their fair share of -J-RPGs, dabbled in Anime, or both. Do people really still shame people who like things from Japan as "weebs"? I thought we'd long ago moved past that kind of bullying since nerdom has kind of taken over most facets of pop culture. XC1 definitely had an anime-esque art style. If I were to compare X1 and X2, it'd be the difference in quality between "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood" and "One-Piece". Of course, quality is subjective, as OP is extremely popular. It's just not an art style I care for. Still haven't played 2 because of its asthetic and the tacky sexualized character designs. "Xeno", as a series, is strong enough to stand on its own two legs without resorting to cheap fan service and generic art work.
@@fluffy9071 it's not that we dislike the anime artstyle. it's that Xenoblade Chronicles artstyle in the wii and 3ds version is actually really nice, and we didn't like that they changed it. that's my reasoning for not liking what definitive edition did, they altered the artstyle of the game when it wasn't needed, and while the game GRAPHICALLY looks nicer on Switch, I don't like that it required sacrificing a part of the game that many were accustomed to and wished had gotten the HD console treatment. and I do prefer the artstyle present in Xenoblade chronicles 1 on the wii and 3ds I honestly don't know why they didn't return to it in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
@@fluffy9071 meh, never played the game and i think the original looks better. Similar situation to radiant historia and it's remake, the art style is simply more unique than the generic anime looks the new versions have
@@WednesdayMan characters models in the original looked fugley, aesticly speaking the new artstyle is better to look at, do i think the old is bad no, but the upgrade to me is like looking at low poly ff7 to remake or better example dmc3 to 4 and 5, 3s designs are not bad but clearly a graphical problem that they had to make due with but when the new consoles came out they had the power to make it look better, art style is different the character design as xenoblade chronicles and and xenoblade chronices 2 have the same artstyle but not the same character design philosophy kinda like dragon quest and dragon ball, same art style not character direction is very different Id say 3d models should lool better as graphics get better but if something is sprite animation then there isnt actually anything wrong as its part of the style like the pokemon series
I'm so happy at the amount of time that you stressed on the UI, the quests were really random on the wii, the exclamation points make all the quests way better; I might actually try to get all of the skill trees for shulk at least (bright future is really op) and giant's mirror side quests will be fun to do again as well.
Définitive Edition looks amazing, these QoL are awesome, finally be able to know where the sidequests are maybe is the best improvement for me. The artstyle looks good, not the biggest fan of this super anime artstyle like xeno 2 but it doesn't bother me much, but I wish they did something more similar to the original or like Xenoblade X
Holy hell, I remember starting out on rebuilding Colony 6 and I just quit after two upgrades when I realized there were no markers and I had to do shit the old fashioned way.
Just in case, you talk about the difference between NTSC and PAL Wii version of Xenoblade. Well in fact, PAL Wii have 3 video mode 576i50hz, 480i60hz and a 480p60hz, So we can play all Wii game just like the NTSC at 480p and 60, just we also have a 50hz mode for not compatible TV.
in terms of artstyle, its kinda funny how in the original wii version, the characters look more like how real people would while in DE, they just look anime
I’m super glad they have separate toggles for music on fields and in battles. The field music tracks were pretty much all improved upon, but the new battle tracks, especially Mechanical Rhythm and You Will Know Our Names, just weren’t nearly as impactful as the originals to me.
@@loveshiningstar Actually, I kinda like them both about the same. The DE version has a lot of small improvements over the original in the background of the track, but the original’s guitar solo is just wayyyyy better. So idk. I think I’d give a slight edge to the original, personally.
Proud owner of the N3DS version. Really impressed with the work made by MonsterGames and a really great game to play on a handheld. Even though i enjoy the game on the N3DS, I really want to try out DE just to see how the quality of life changes might affect the gameplay. Hopefully, I'll get a switch around 2021 so that I can play DE.
My opinion is probably irrelevant but the graphics didn’t stop me from enjoying the game. I played the game on the 3ds and the graphics looked amazing to me yea I know they are not great now a days but back then I didn’t own much consoles or handhelds so seeing this game made me realize the beauty of gaming and has introduced me to gaming.(this is probably funny to some of you since the 3ds version looked great to me)
I've bought all three versions, though admittedly I haven't exactly played through the wii version (found a copy for $30 ~3 years ago and had to buy it), and only got halfway through the switch version. But I think the 3ds port is my favorite... and its all because of the music player. Can't tell you how many times I took my 3ds and just listened to the soundtrack.
I still prefer the character models and soundtrack of the original game. However, everything else was greatly expanded and improved in the Definitive Edition. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone that is even remotely interested in the game. This game is fantastic and well worth the 60 dollars. It's not just a shameless cash grab like DKCR Tropical Freeze or New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe., this is actually a very well done remaster with care and love that is well worth the money. The Quality of Life improvements are absolutely amazing which alone make it worth it for people who already owned the game before. Seriously, I cannot recommend this game enough.
I feel this. Wish I had changed the soundtrack back to the original early on. I liked a few of the remade tracks, but some of the cutscene tracks just have not left the same impact as the originals did for me. I wanted to give the new soundtrack a fair shake, but I honestly lost motivation to continue just because it didn't connect with me the way the original did. Which sounds weird, but it's like that uncanny valley of similarity where it just feels off enough to totally take me out of it. Also, I hate the changes they made to the gem menu system, so that made me pick back up my Wii U, lol
Update (Added to pinned comment too) Xenoblade DE received an update the other day that had a bunch of bug fixes, and also added QoL changes to 2 things I mentioned in this video. 1. the casual mode reminders are now disabled when you disable tutorial boxes. 2. The mass of side quest markers can be disabled.
Expert mode also changes how much exp/sp you receive from battles and quests depending on the level you set your characters at vs the enemies you fought
I saw a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles at my local GameStop along with The Last Story in 2010/2011. I didn’t have the money to buy either one but I felt very compelled to try it based on the front and back covers. I never got either one which really bummed me out until I saw the announcement for the Definitive Edition.
Xenoblade 3ds was my first exposure to Xenoblade as a whole. I have no regrets and replayed it on the Switch. Been a fan of the series since 2 and X were a great time. I'm excited for XC3
I was working at Gamestop I think 2013 or 14 and made my coworkers keep an extra copy of the Wii Xenoblade until I could afford to buy it. I still have never beat it and I have so many hours in it. I'm around the snowy area and I've completed every side quest I could up to that point.
As someone with 150 hours on the original and over 100 on the DE, I can say easily that the Switch version is the one to get. One of the best QOL changes was that you didn't need to return to an NPC if you collected all items he requested ( minor sidequests, major ones unlocked a cutscene or other stuff). But this single change made most of the grindy stuff way faster.
I've owned the Wii version for about 7-8 years now. I just started finally playing it recently. I definitely plan to get the DE at some point though. Glad to hear they fixed the balance problem the original game has. I've been doing all the sidequests, so I've been really over leveled the entire game so far. They didn't balance this at all in the original.
Do to QoL, Sidequest clearing is a hell of alot faster than ever. I compared my 3ds playtime to my Switch playtime (2 more hours on Switch) and I hav cleared over twice as much sides on Switch. Fuckin hell lol
This was a great rundown! I never realized the 3DS version replaced the environment models entirely for some reason. I was really impressed that you brought up how Definitive Edition is using the XBC2 engine! I wasn't aware this was documented anywhere besides TCRF. One major thing I noticed while playing the game is that the loading for the cutscenes is almost instantaneous. I don't know how they did it, but the cutscenes in the Wii and 3DS version had to take a few seconds to load when triggered. In the Switch version, cutscenes load instantaneously. Maybe the cutscene animation format upgrade was just THAT significant. I think a large improvement not mentioned in this video is the dub lip sync. In the Definitive Edition, the cutscenes are synched up with the English dub if you play on that version, and it really makes a huge difference in immersion and believability, I feel. Especially in the scenes with the characters standing around using their default animations, having something like lip sync really helps sell the illusion that these are real people much better, at least to my eyes. Fantastic rundown!
Thanks for this. With the announcement of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I have the desire to pick up the series again. I already played Xenoblade Chronicle X and 2. But never touched 1 or the Tornha DLC yet. So this video helped me out alot. Definitely getting the Definitive Edition!
Just played the Wii version first time and all I can say is "Wow", this is a jewel, awesome game, planning on buying the definiteve version, that's how great this game is.
I hope Xenoblade X gets ported to Switch. I would also be really happy with HD remasters of the Xenosaga trilogy and Xenogears from Bandai Namco and Square Enix, respectively.
The only issue I personally have had with the definitive edition is Reyn's face... Just a personal thing I am too attached how it used to look and still getting used to that classic voice coming out of that new face.
The whole saga around the NA Wii release is one of the more baffling things in that era for Nintendo. The whole limited release thing kind of bummed me out and I had kind of figured I'd never get a physical copy. Xseed did another limited run a few years after the first one though and sold it through their web store, which is how I got my copy of both it and the last story. I actually still have no idea why Nintendo of America were so adamant about not releasing the games in the region, to the point where a third party pub had to step in after a crowd campaign gained a bunch of traction.
I went 3DS mostly due to the portability. The Switch is just awkward in a pocket. Graphics look bad on a side by side, but on the small screen, especially relative to other 3DS titles, it looks utterly fantastic.
I love both Wii and 3ds versions, so one can only dream how awesome the switch version is. I must say that I am more fond of the "Twilight Princess" style of the original and 3ds, but the new style is still awesome and the UI rework is what rrally makes me love this remake.
It might just be me on this one but I love the voice acting in the first Xenoblade game. Yes it is cheesy and bad at times but it has such a charm. I remember playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and just being amazed that it was even possible that it could even lol. That was a very special game and still is to this day.
What are you saying? By the time the Wii was out, most people were taking advantage of 480p in PAL territories, unless you had a very old CRT, and most people had LCD TVs by then, in 2011 you were most likely not playing anything on the Wii in 576I.
This is correct and an error on my part. What I should've purely mentioned was FPS and not resolution. The game is 25 fps on PAL and that's the only important difference
It's been so long since I played the Wii version that I didn't even notice how much of an upgrade Definitive is outside of just the visuals and Future Connected. They really outdid themselves. Artistically I like the original character art but I never felt the in-game graphics did those designs justice, so pretty boy anime Shulk it is.
One small gripe, pretty sure you can turn off quest markers in the options menu. I recall it being brought up while someone also asked why you'd ever want to do that.
Great video. Sounds like a lot of QoL improvements. I managed to get the Wii version from a second hand shop a few years after release but I never got around to playing it. The new edition sounds a lot better so glad I'll be playing it this way.
I think that both the Wii and 3DS still have some value over the switch versions. 3DS collection mode and just the Wii version legacy is more than enough to make them worthwhile.
Great video. Obviously a lot of time went into the editing to line up the visuals of the different versions. I appreciate your effort, and look forward to your future work!
The original game will always look so much better in my opinion, not to say definitive edition looks bad but there’s something about the charm the original has
My first experience was with the 3DS version of the game. I never got to beat it but I did appreciate the effort it took to fit so much into a small portable package. I picked up Definitive Edition sometime last year and played it for 40 hours, and just recently got back into playing the game no problem!
Def edition is great, but personally I like the "look' of the Wii version way more, is more angular, rough.. , and looks great at 2x scale when emulated, so is like ' original with make-up on top," which is not bad. I started the Def Edition but , somehow the original version felt more interesting to me. Is a personal preference, maybe because the color palette is more muted and gives Vagrant Story Vibes.
Wii for the original experience with the original artstyle, new 3ds is for a portable experience of the wii version, and Switch is for the new chapter and the altered artstyle to fit with the character art that was made AFTER the 3d character models of xenoblade chronicles on the wii.
Which one should you buy? A) The original port that is super rare, expensive, and on a console that is two generations behind. B) A downgraded port on a discontinued handheld system with even more graphical limitations with only a small amount of added features, but is relatively inexpensive. C) The indisputable best version of the game. Sporting the highest graphics possible with the system it is on, currently available at a reasonable price, and an entire epilogue story that gives a good 10 hour of additional gameplay. 🤔 Dunno man, maybe A is the correct answer
Excellent demonstration on the xb1 video, music comparisons. Also enjoy that Alcamoth demo shot from title screen at 3:15 from xb1 wii. That was such great view in how the shot pans up and at the right you see the horizon of the vast ocean with the great two titans. But in xb 1 DE its cover by to many clouds. Or how they changed Vanea che.......
In my opinion the 3ds version is the best way to play it. It looks and plays better than the Wii or switch versions. The only reason the 3ds version looks bad on RUclips videos is because they're stretching the pixels to record it. On an actual 3ds it looks incredibly crisp.
I've put over 20 hours in xenoblade on switch and haven't beat it yet and I got the 3ds version since I got a jailbroken 3ds and I love ambitious ports like that
I have the Wii original and run it on a smaller CRT (PC monitor) it looks very very sharp and detailed, not jaggy like in this video. 480p Wii content really shines this way.
I bought it for the 3DS a while back and bounced off it hard. Ended up selling it and kind of forgetting about. Recently got it on the Switch and now I'm hooked. I never tried the Wii version, but the Switch version is really good, and I'm glad I can finally really appreciate the game.
I’m actually going to beat the game on 3DS then 100% on DE. Feel like I should finish the 3DS version since I even stayed up for its digital release. Also I’m like halfway into the game going by DE’s chapter layout.
The remade models do look better, I’ll admit, but I honestly miss the old style. It felt more unique, had a whole different quality to it. But that’s just my personal opinion, and overall the definitive edition is muuuch easier to get into, especially because of the smart minimap!
As someone who owns and 100%'d the original more-or-less, DE really is the definitive edition of this game, and a no-brainer for people who've never played. I think the only issues I had with DE that I didn't have with the original are: 1. The high quality models of the main cast who received a lot of love juxtaposed against NPCs that didn't get much (compare the nopon models in this game to the much more detailed ones in XB2 on the same platform for example), as well as some environment backdrops can hinder immersion a bit during some cutscenes. The new models look great, but sometimes it feels like the major characters were pulled from a different game with higher graphical fidelity and dropped into this one. 2. Shulk's face. Imo all the other party members in DE look the way they were meant to look on the Wii. Like they took the original models and art into consideration and the DE models are the natural evolution of the original. Not with Shulk though, and I'm not saying he looks bad. He just doesn't look like himself, to the point where it changes his whole vibe and makes me not appreciate him as much as a character as I used to. Although part of that could just be me getting older and becoming less naive, so I don't identify with Shulk nearly as much, and notice how painfully "shonen" he can be during later parts of the game. Never been a fan of his Smash Bros. iteration either, feels like some random dude cosplaying Shulk, part of that is because Smash Shulk has a different eng VA.
Remember the time i discovered the existence of the game. Was on 2014 and almost got downloaded for my modded Wii because i was a child and getting the game was practically impossible here in my country. Not sure why didn´t download at the time, but years got passed and i´m glad that i bought the Switch version a couple of months after release. Its quality additions and changes made me had a really good first experience of the game and almost instantly became one of my favorite games. Other versions of the game are irrelevant to me with DE existence. Performance issues are a problem, but nothing that ruins the game. Though if the game gets a port on another future console, i pray for to be on a really good hardware.
honestly knowing the history of these ports just make me what to get all three of them with the 3ds being the most impressive. If I only had one choice I would choose the switch version alot more being user friendly and having more content is automatic + for me
I honestly find the original models more expressive depending on the scene, like Melia at 8:30. I think it might be in part because their models are less detailed, so I focus on the shifts of the facial animation better.
10:37 As someone who has played the entire trilogy, I am so glad that Monosoft took this navigation system and run along with it in XC3. I've played XC2 and the compass system is just so goddamn horrible. I can't tell you how many times I had to pull up the World Map (and even a walkthrough at some point before I figure out how the thing is supposed to work) and how many times I got misled by the compass and accidentally run through a high-level area or places I wasn't supposed to go yet.
I don't own the Wii version, but I've played the other two, and it's gotta be the definitive edition. I usually don't care about graphics in games (as long as I can easily tell what's going on I don't care), but it's hard to argue against the graphics improvements, and that's just the smallest point. The quality of life changes are something I found myself unable to play without in my DE playthrough, the cosmetic options are a nice touch, the land of challenge is awesome, being able to change your level is surprisingly useful (cough cough, leveling up 7s skills), and most of all having the epilogue Future Connected is just unbelievable. Just about the only thing the 3ds port has going for it is having a jukebox and a figurine display, and you can look up the music online, and the figurine display isn't really that big of a deal.
I have the original Wii version of XC1, coming back to it after years can be really hard, especially since now I don't own an hd tv like I used to, which didn't really make Wii games look bad. And I've been thinking about buying the DE version despite being familiar with the original, and that's kinda holding me back.
half of Monolith's XC2 team were Thanos snapped for BoTW, yet they were also told to still release the game within 2017. Hence why so many updates for the game came post-release, since Nintendo sorta fucked them over.
I played DE(my first time playing Xenoblade), but I played it WAY too quickly trying to get to another game I had just bought. I liked it, but I’m thinking about replaying it so I can really appreciate it. I’m going to wait for Xenoblade 3 so I don’t rush again.😅 I love the look of DE way more then 2. It just looks a bit more realistic while still having sort of a cute look.
The only thing I dislike in Xenoblade Definitive Edition is the fact that grass draw distance is REALLY low, lower than Xenoblade 2 and Torna. But even lower than the original game on Wii.
I'm finally getting around to this game and should've watched this video before making my purchase of the DE, however I think i made the right choice and am glad it has the better graphics and QoL improvements for someone with not a lot of time on their hands to play.
@@airtiger4577 bought used wii u just for XC X, about a month after I bought XC 3D for 3DS. About to start Chapter 4 in X. It was hard to get into the game, but it´s a fresh gaming experience. It´s not holding hand, it can´t be rushed forward (I think). It really feels like exploring whole new world, after the Earth was destroyed in X. 3D plays a little better. But then you see there are giant robots only in X you can pilot later......... I played Xenogears as a kid, quess that´s where it comes from.
Had I known the first comments would be a race to talk about the art style then I woulda included that info in the video
2. As folks corrected me in the comments, a PAL Wii has 3 video mode: 576i50hz, 480i60hz and a 480p60hz. The resolution wasn't important, the importance was that the game runs at 25 fps anyways. The anomalies are still true as well, on PAL hardware you move faster but have a little longer load times
UPDATE: Xenoblade DE received an update the other day that had a bunch of bug fixes, and also added QoL changes to 2 things I mentioned in this video. 1. the casual mode reminders are now disabled when you disable tutorial boxes. 2. The mass of side quest markers can be disabled.
That's a good point actually, I'm gonna keep that in mind for the future
Probably not a big deal for some but I've noticed the soundtrack to be inconsistent in its music choice. There are many times in Definitive Edition where the arrangement of a song will play, even if the soundtrack is set to the original and vice versa. SPOILERS AHEAD
Examples include: no music when Xord kidnaps Juju, the arrangement of Engage the Enemy will always play when contronting Xord at the Ether Mines and the original An Obstacle in Our Path will always play when Egil pulls the sword out of the Bionis.
He looks great, he still has the smug grin and intense eyes and everyone else is either really expressive or just as expressive as the original (more leaning towards the former), i dont undrstand your points at all
The old look being more expressive doesnt really hold much weight the models were, as you said, poor quality, so they werent that great at expressive, im guessing you are just looking back through rose tinted glasses
The 3DS version still blows me away, that thing is a technical marvel.
Much like the 3DS port of MGS3 lol, especially since that one can somehow run on Old3DS models too. These games were never intended to run on hardware like that but somehow the programmers made it work.
@@MarioLuigi0404 3DS hardware is pretty similar to PS2 no?
Does the 3ds Version Loads as fast as the switch? Because fast travel is literally a blink of an eye.
@@RecountDaFox1 Sadly it's not quite as fast, no. That said, it's also not egregiously slow, which is more than anyone could reasonably expect from such a port, really.
@@HansAlRachid the 3DS was the version i opted for. i figured i like the 3D and when i play the sequels u can only go up in graphics
Quest quality of life improvements > all. Bonus: handheld version included
still no sprint button
edit: or ability to fucking jump in battles, i get cornered against inch-high ledges way too often
what do you mean a sprint button?,if you mean autorun we already have that and if you mean a button that increases the running speed you cant have that because that would break a lot of the games combat but to go faster you can use quick step gems
@@questionmarkquestionmarkques how would sprinting break combat
I wish the model and music viewer were available on the Switch version, the soundtrack is too good.
I was surprised that it wasn't available. You would think they would want to show off all the new models, but at least we got a cutscene viewer.
THAT WAS IN THE OTHER VERSIONS?!!!
@@Coolio_Ash New 3DS was the only version with the Model Viewer and Jukebox.
You have a model viewers just for the main party but I feel like DE did include something like that in one of the menu sections for other characters.
Hopefully they'll update the game to where they include those features! Then it would be the perfect version!!
Honestly, no matter what version you get. You're still getting a solid RPG with plenty of hours to boot
Hello there, my name is Gabriel and I play the character of young Noah in Xenoblade 3. It's AWESOME to see my character, to actually hear my voice and, to see the finished product! It's been an absolute privilege to be involved in this and it's VERY exciting to see everything come together in this way.
Boy you wish you were Harry. Joking aside great job on the role especially in those early fight scenes in the past
It has since become one of my favorite games of all time
@@MK-bi1hj Oh, that's awesome! Not many people have that version of the 3DS, but I'm a huge advocate of it, lol
It's also worth noting that definitive edition now has a "fashion" slot for armor so you don't have to have a mismash of armor based on stats, you can have the armor you use for stats and the armor your character model has as two different things!
The best feature, honestly. I hate when the game never gives me a separate cosmetic slot for armor
Yeah, but it spoils the first big twist considering one character only has like 5 outfits unlike everyone else. They should've just shown available fashion armor as it was unlocked, otherwise you know from the second you check out those screens that one of those characters will not be sticking it out for the majority of the game
I am sooooo glad they added that, I remember actually going for somewhat worse armor at times on the 3ds version simply because it looked better.
@@Chronoflation yeah, but hoenstly don't think it's something most would notice. Especially if they don't know anything about the game.
I loved how they changed the key necklace of Alvis and replaced it for the Aegis/Conduit shape!!!
Similar situation to radiant historia and it's remake, the art style is simply more unique than the generic anime looks the new versions have
@@WednesdayMan characters models in the original looked fugley, aesticly speaking the new artstyle is better to look at, do i think the old is bad no, but the upgrade to me is like looking at low poly ff7 to remake or better example dmc3 to 4 and 5, 3s designs are not bad but clearly a graphical problem that they had to make due with but when the new consoles came out they had the power to make it look better, art style is different the character design as xenoblade chronicles and and xenoblade chronices 2 have the same artstyle but not the same character design philosophy kinda like dragon quest and dragon ball, same art style not character direction is very different
Id say 3d models should lool better as graphics get better but if something is sprite animation then there isnt actually anything wrong as its part of the style like the pokemon series
Well in fact, PAL Wii have 3 video mode 576i50hz, 480i60hz and a 480p60hz,
So we can play all Wii game just like the NTSC at 480p and 60, just we also have a 50hz mode for not compatible TV.
in terms of artstyle, its kinda funny how in the original wii version, the characters look more like how real people would while in DE, they just look anime
Damn listening to the original soundtrack seems a little bit odd after being exposed for the whole game to the rearranged version
After playing almost the entire game on the wii I feel the other way around XD
I’m super glad they have separate toggles for music on fields and in battles. The field music tracks were pretty much all improved upon, but the new battle tracks, especially Mechanical Rhythm and You Will Know Our Names, just weren’t nearly as impactful as the originals to me.
@@braintrope4736 they improved the vision theme at least.
@@loveshiningstar Actually, I kinda like them both about the same. The DE version has a lot of small improvements over the original in the background of the track, but the original’s guitar solo is just wayyyyy better. So idk. I think I’d give a slight edge to the original, personally.
@@braintrope4736 yes!! that’s exactly how i feel, i dont think anything can top those original battle themes

Hopefully, I'll get a switch around 2021 so that I can play DE.
I love how Shulk went from looking fug-ugly in the Wii/3DS version, to having an absolute babyface in Definitive.

Well, the soundtrack changes don't really matter since DE allows you to pick the old one if you really want to anyways
Even better that it was $50 where I got it.
It actually runs on Torna engine. Just improved XC2 engine. 8:47
so a remake then.
I own all 3 versions but the 3DS one is the one I actually finished. It's amazing that they brough it over so successfully.
Been a fan of the series since
2 and X were a great time. I'm excited for XC3
The great thing is that if anyone prefers the original look 👀 they can easily play it. WiiU for $19.99 and it even allows you to use the gamepad.
Unfortunately for me I think I paid $60 for it on my Wii U on the eShop when I got it a couple years ago.
ChironTheCuddley There’s no way because the default price on Wii U was 20 bucks
>anyone can easily play it
>wii u
lol
you're here for THAT, aren't you? They are $99 used and easily modded. 🤷♂️ pretty accessible if anyone wants one.
He said that right in the video...
I've played every Xenoblade Chronicles game. 1,2,X, and 3. I love them. I just hope the next one has engaging combat for once.
I have all the versions and the answer is Switch
I've owned the Wii version for about 7-8 years now. I just started finally playing it recently. I definitely plan to get the DE at some point though. Glad to hear they fixed the balance problem the original game has. I've been doing all the sidequests, so I've been really over leveled the entire game so far. They didn't balance this at all in the original.
What took you so long?
@@They_are_Arthur Backlog of hundreds mostly.
Do to QoL, Sidequest clearing is a hell of alot faster than ever.
I compared my 3ds playtime to my Switch playtime (2 more hours on Switch)
and I hav cleared over twice as much sides on Switch.
Fuckin hell lol
I did not did sidequests so at the end i needed to grind
I personally found xenoblade chronicles X to be the worst XC game I've played
The only issue I personally have had with the definitive edition is Reyn's face... Just a personal thing I am too attached how it used to look and still getting used to that classic voice coming out of that new face.
Reyns and Shulks face. Shulks babyface doesn´t fit in my opinion.
I only wish the definitive edition had a bestiary so I knew where certain monsters were.
Only game I can think of where you might want to play the original instead of the definitive is TWEWY
@@AustinSV Only if you play in 576i mode. If you play in 480i/p mode, you get 30 fps.
@@AustinSV No if you set your Wii to 480i/p you will get 30fps not 25.
Definitive Shulk is always doing a :3
he is, omg
I Brought Xenoblade Chronicles from the Wii U Eshop and loved it a lot on the gamepad it’s a True Masterpiece
So glad I got this on switch. Especially when I play on TV.
🤔 Dunno man, maybe A is the correct answer
i dunno, B is looking pretty good for me
D is the correct answer
My first time experiencing this game was on the 3DS, but the switch port is definitely where its at
My first exposure to Xenoblade Chronicles was from Chuggaaconroy in 2013.
Xenoblade Chronicles is In my Top 5 Games of All Time
Excellent demonstration on the xb1 video, music comparisons.
Something that only the Wii version has is seamless transitions between regions, I miss it, it made the world feel more real.
I really like the original version art style.
I got the switch version of it. Man i am shocked from how different it looks compared to wii and 3ds.
I wish it had a bestiary to track enemies and know which unique monsters you have beat
I think the only issues I had with DE that I didn't have with the original are:
Love that you're into CRT Gaming. Subbed, great content!
If I only had one choice I would choose the switch version alot more being user friendly and having more content is automatic + for me
This game is awesome on Wii and Switch! Amazing gameplay and history!
I honestly find the original models more expressive depending on the scene, like Melia at 8:30. I think it might be in part because their models are less detailed, so I focus on the shifts of the facial animation better.
I've been putting the original Wii version on and off due to various bosses. I might just finally get the Definitive Edition on my Switch soon.
I'm not sure I'm into the art style for the Switch version...kinda jarring for me, personally.
8:34 CRASHING THE MOBILE HOUSE INTO ARTILLERY?! HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE FORCE?!
After playing XB DE. I realized the people from monolith were ran out of time to polish the UI from XB2.....
half of Monolith's XC2 team were Thanos snapped for BoTW, yet they were also told to still release the game within 2017.
It just looks a bit more realistic while still having sort of a cute look.
very good job you have doen here! thanks for this exhaustive work
The only thing I dislike in Xenoblade Definitive Edition is the fact that grass draw distance is REALLY low, lower than Xenoblade 2 and Torna. But even lower than the original game on Wii.
It looks the same as xenoblade 2 but i might be wrong.
I'm finally getting around to this game and should've watched this video before making my purchase of the DE, however I think i made the right choice and am glad it has the better graphics and QoL improvements for someone with not a lot of time on their hands to play.
Ngl the Definitive Edition looks better but I already have the Wii version downloaded on my Wii U
Great video. Hope you also make one for Persona 4 or Ys VIII.
I would love to have a remastered edition for xenoblade chronicles X, just to be able to play it on the switch, it's such a good game
I personally found xenoblade chronicles X to be the worst XC game I've played
@@airtiger4577 bought used wii u just for XC X, about a month after I bought XC 3D for 3DS. About to start Chapter 4 in X. It was hard to get into the game, but it´s a fresh gaming experience. It´s not holding hand, it can´t be rushed forward (I think). It really feels like exploring whole new world, after the Earth was destroyed in X. 3D plays a little better. But then you see there are giant robots only in X you can pilot later......... I played Xenogears as a kid, quess that´s where it comes from.
I played all the versions of this game. It’s my favourite game and I prefer it over 2
I have 2 versions switch and 3ds - gonna play 3ds because it has better graphical design
