    1. if you have a period in the day to feel no pain
    2. generally worse with sitting and getting up from sitting (bending down worse, stretching up gets better > good sign)
    3. if it is worse while bending forward doing something
    4. worst in the morning but improves in about half an hour cause of disc imbibing with fluids during the night
    5. worsens with inactivity, gets better with movement like walking
    6. if pain stops above the knee
    7. if generally you are better when laying on the stomach and on the elbows
If you have at least 4 of them its a good sign you can heal your own sciatica

Amazing video Bob and Brad! I had a MRI done and it showed that I have a L5-S1 herniated DISC. The orthopedic that I am seen recommended a cortisone shot. However, I present all the 7 signs of self recovery that mention in this video. Can you please let me know your opinion on whether I should take this shot? Thanks

I am 62 and exercised every morning and lost 30lbs. Then I laid on a roller the wrong way and herniated a disc. It was agony for two weeks. Now it has been a month and it IS getting better. Just had an MRI and have a disc extrusion. I felt like many of the commenters. My active life was over and all that that infers. Now it is a month later and I’m able to lay on my stomach when I sleep and can lay on my back with little pain. Hang in there! If an old guy like me can get better and continue my life, then you younger ones can as well. Be patient and listen to your body. Don’t push your limits and be kind to yourself. Chances are good it will get better
This is a 3 month update to my herniated disc issue. I am back to lifting and working out normally! I was careful and stopped all of that activity for a while and now it is fine. I am very careful about lifting with my legs and not my back now, but there have been times I’ve tweaked it and feel it. But even the numbness in my left shin has gone away.
Of course each of us is different, but if someone had said I’d feel this good 3 months later, I would never have believed them. Hang in there and remain hopeful!

I also have a very physically demanding job that has been just injuring it more, so I’ve been worried about my career. I was starting to think that I’d be stuck with the pain forever, as I roll it, use heat, stretches, exercises...but this video has given me hope again, as I pass them all! Please try walking up steep inclines get your self an inversion table to hang at about 20 degrees learn to massage spasms until they are gone to help relax the back. Good Luck Deep breathing helps try this, lay on floor stretch out breath in for ten hold breath ten using diaphragm and lower stomach muscles force air out for ten, keep this posture and continue repeating for 100 times be amazed using stomach muscles to force air out. It realigns the spine.

I didn’t have a good handle on how to properly recover and dealt with the pain for a couple of years. I thought it would never go away. This was after 2-3 years of sciatic pain.

    Hi there Bob & Brad,
Great videos guys. Between you two & a host of others I have learnt so much. I herniated my L5 S1 at the age of 20. I'm now 30 and have been working on it on & off for the past 7 years (at lot more in the past two years) I had a very bad flare up of sciatica in 2016 going all the way down the left leg into the foot. I have been relatively pain free since then, without ever having surgery. I still have a good range of motion. I still occasionally have pain in the low back and some residual pain in left leg. I just want to ask what your opinions are on the seated pelvic tilt and what would be your advice on how to keep the discs hydrated throughout the day?
    Many thanks

I feel great now. I had a 3 level laminectomy(s). On April 6th of this year. The surgery went great. 6 weeks after surgery I was ready to return to work. I was advised not to bend, twist, or lift. I didnt do anything like thst after surgery but I was bending down to pick up things thst I would drop like pens, papers, or meds. Eventually my back started to ache/hurt a good deal. I honestly thought I had messed up my back again. So I stopped bending and stayed in bed on my days off. The pain went away after about 2 weeks. Now I feel great and pain free. Mu neurosurgeon did a great job. I just need to be careful with my back. I think if it messes up again I probably need to have my vertebrae fused. If there isnt enough disk left. But I did learn that there are artificial discs that are being used now to fix/replace the real ones. I don't know how long those have been around but its good to know if they are an option.

Looking back at the stupid 17 year old me, it's easy to say what I should and should not have done, but I just wanted to look cool doing 30+ kg pistol squats without the bare minimum ankle mobility (had to do them with heel supports) and even less hamstring mobility (I couldn't keep the opposite leg straight).
I'll start to read this book today, 23/12/2021, and do the exercises, while I update how my back feels.

First off, Great videos and great content! With these videos and some intense PT, I've been getting a lot better with my own herniated disc, but I do have a quick question. I saw on another video you talked about sleeping positions, but i wasn't aware about what makes the disc hurt more in the morning as compared to later in the day. Is there any way to alleviate that pain or lessen it? My current solution is to get up and get ready for the day and then spend roughly 30 minutes laying on my chest with a pillow under my chest (kind of like a prone pressed position) which helps loosen me up a lot. Thanks guys!

@@kieranbutler3323 I've noticed great improvement this week. Last 3 days I've walked more than 30 km ( 10 km each day ) almost without any discomfort. Sciatica is still present, but its minor, and after long walks or after prolonged sitting, and it dissapieres after lying on stomach.
I try to walk 15 - 30 minutes a few times a day, then do some decompression with chair or with pull up bar, do 15 McKenzies and lie down on stomach. Rinse and repeat every 1.5 - 2 hours.
I sleep on my stomach as well. Hopefully my back will heal in a few weeks, so that I don't wreck neck sleeping like this.

@@kieranbutler3323 This is how it happened for me as well. Too much deadlifts, and then in the middle of the night sorness turned to pain. Tried to stretch ql, hip flexors, gluteus, releases with ball...etc,initially for 2-3 weeks and it only aggravated it.
After that stopped all stretching and focused on lying on stomach as much as possible, which decreased sciatica symptoms. After hour or so I stoud up and walked around in order to flush junk stuff in my lower back. Also avoided sitting as much as possible, and doing hip hindge instead of bending. It looks like it works.
Keep in mind, I was able to do pull ups from day 1, but bending, standing, even lying down on my back hurted( and it still does ).
I think this is 4th or 5th week since I changed rehab program, and Its so far with promising results.
Edit: I don't do any gym work currently. Only controlled pull ups, and push ups once a week. I've read that combination of lying down ( for me on stomach ), standing and walking will heal you.

After trying to lift a large large rock into a wagon when I was 19 I pushed as far as I could and felt a pop or tear and could not bear the pain I knew I did something bad… until I was 32 just 9 months ago I was in agony in that spot I tore or popped and it was getting worse and worse. I was utterly disappointed about my back situation I thought I was destined for pain forever. some wonderful woman pushed that spot over with her thumb with good pressure she pushed over the spot away from my spine really pushed it over and it felt really good really helped me for about 2 months but but it wasn’t enough one jump from about 3 feet and the pain was back and this time even worse! something was on my nerve or something but I saw some light at the end of the tunnel I tried it myself I pushed with my thumb over to the left that spot that hurts me so bad in my lower back where I felt that pop or tear from lifting. I pressed and I pushed and I pushed it over with my thumb until my back was swollen and there was a big lump there I thought I had really screwed myself I was in real pain I had to do something anything… then I found a metal 3 inch diameter pipe about waist high and I laid my back using my whole body weight on that spot with some force I did that a few times the last time I took a few steps back and got a run at it flipped around and hit that spot dead on! I felt band heard a few large pops and got up… for the whole night that spot was pulsating and felt strange with a little pain. But the next day I did not feel that familiar feeling stabbing feeling at all! I swear to God on my life since then I’ve been pain-free not one problem and that’s been 9 months ago and I had pain since I was 19 thank the Lord I’m pain-free now whatever I did whatever I did I popped something back in or off of my nerve. The excruciating stabbing pain to where I could not even get up off a chair without sliding off of it sometimes or if I jumped out of a vehicle from even a couple feet sometimes it would hit that nerve that spot and I would literally have to lay on the ground for 20 minutes. But thank God somehow I’m pain-free I saved my back by crushing that spot. I got lucky I’ll take it easy on my back now please take it easy on yours

I have been out of work for 5 months and in a lot of pain. I can't sit for very long. I go to physio and this really helps me. (If you get a good physio). They correct posture and get you to stretch. They push you to your limit. But it helps. Love your videos as they are helping me aswell. Thanks for the advice on the book. I have a l5/s1 herniation. Since I have to sit so much every day, I'm thrilled that this is actively healing my sciatica! Almost pain-free after 72 hours and months of continuous aches and pains in my legs. Better advice than I got from the Orthopedics doctor I went to..

You just described my situation to a "t". I got better with some back strengthening exercises, stretching, and hanging from a pull-up bar (and just doing pull-ups).

If the stretching is causing more intense pain in your buttock , it may not be sciatica. It may be an inflammation or tear in a ligament in your buttock. An MRI should be done to see if it is related to the Gluteus Medius or Piriformis.
