      His PV array isn't grounded 🤦

    • @jajabinks92123
      @jajabinks92123 Год назад

      Yep, u always have to ground it. Plus, any testing on a system like this ( with live DC from Solar/PV Panel, DC from battery, and potential for any AC/DC from inverter or transformers...not to mention the juice in any capacitors...u have to take safety measures While multimeter testing....by plugging in a 3 prong grounded extension cord in a properly grounded household outlet & putting the other end in your pocket. The shock will travel from your body to the grounded extension cord safely. * Also I'm assuming your elbows were bent & the shocked / current passed thru your elbows. At that amount of current (Amperes) if one of your elbows was straight (as in reaching full extension) the current would have traveled straight down your arm to your heart...and it can potentially stop your heart / kill. Lucky. Stay safe sir 🙏 It's good ur safe and alive to tell about this unacceptable voltage leak...by just touching it some exterior screws. Maybe isolate those screws or put non conductive covers/ caps on em. Maybe some non-conductive shielding or farad wrap shielding installed by manufacturer would make it safer. Portable systems... need to remember...need to be grounded to the Earth or to a an AC ground wire ( not chassis vehicle ground). Keep safe.

    • @WillProwse
      @WillProwse  Год назад +26

      It was grounded actually. Doesn't prevent leakage from MPPT circuit that's at higher potential than inverter output. Also I'm finding difference of potential between expansion battery and main unit without PV connected and ground connected with AC input. So it has problems

    The 10 meg ohm input impedance of your voltmeter tells you the open circuit potential, but not the available current. It takes only a few microamps to create a harmless but alarming shock sensation. I urge you to test again with something like a 1 kilo ohm 1/4 watt resistor across the input of your voltmeter. That will essentially turn it into an ammeter that reads 1 volt per milliamp. If the leakage current is only a few microamps to a milliamp or so, I would not regard that as dangerous.
    My suspicion is that the MPPT converter in the unit is capacitively coupling its high voltage, high frequency switching waveform to the chassis. This is a common issue because the power switching devices are screwed to a heatsink of some kind and that can act as an antenna that couples the rapidly changing voltage on the switching devices to nearby chassis parts. Only a tiny trickle through the air - but enough to measure and feel, especially if you panel string is high voltage.
    Were your panel frames grounded? Was either the positive or negative lead of the high voltage DC grounded? The Hysolis units - were they grounded in any way? On rubber wheels, with no AC mains connection, I suspect not.
    Maybe all that is needed to make sure the units can't have voltage on the outside it a bit of grounding, somewhere....

    • @chadseld
      @chadseld Год назад +9

      This is what I was thinking but you said it better. You can measure high floating voltages with lots of electronic devices. But if Will was able to feel the shock as something greater than static, that would indicate more current than I was thinking. I would love to investigate this further.

    • @WillProwse
      @WillProwse  Год назад +17

      Exactly what me and my friend were thinking about the mppt. And I should test the amperage. Smart idea with the resistor. I'll have to test that carefully tomorrow. Good idea
      I just connected AC input to grid without solar a few minutes ago, getting 58 volts AC between expansion battery and main unit on the non-faulty one. So one has leakage from MPPT circuit like you mentioned, and would make sense, and other one has something else going on.

    • @WillProwse
      @WillProwse  Год назад +11

      All the panels are grounded because they are laying on the concrete slab and it's wet. Even when dry I measure some leakage from them. I actually connect those arrays to an isolated input on a victron for this reason. I have measured the leakage across my concrete slab multiple times. One time I had a solar panel that was leaking a lot of current and it was causing a buzzing on the ground array frame. That was fun to figure out. With another array connected I had less voltage but it was still present. I also checked the wires and installation and connections first.

    • @WillProwse
      @WillProwse  Год назад +10

      Oh good point about the heat sink that's very true. My friend has a device for finding these issues. We are going to try to hook it up and see where it sparks.

    • @WillProwse
      @WillProwse  Год назад +7

      The hysolis is on rubber wheel platform. In the first thing I disconnected was the AC input to see if it persisted. Because I knew that would be a solid ground connection and the leakage to the concrete it would travel through.

    Great Video! Thanks Will. Maybe make a separate caution video explaining what you said at the end. We get excited to try something new, and trust that the products are going to be great. So we let our guard down and that can lead to accidents. You made a great point about that. Perhaps that warrants a video all on its own, a cautionary tale. Every system that can produce 120v AC has the potential to injure or kill someone. So even a 12v system, from the inverter on the 120v ac side has that potential. You are great at explaining these complex issues in a way that is easy to understand. Would be a great safety video for beginners who are excited about building their new systems.

    Dang Will, you had me excited about this unit.
    It’s Super Easy to advertise these features.. and not to dang difficult to design in these basic features and functions?
    It’s Not Rocket Surgery!
    It blows me away that this thing got out the door?
    Function testing? Nope
    QA testing? Nope
    Safety testing? Nope
    Glad you are still kicking Will.

    Hi Will , I follow you for several years even though my English is just fair, but know nothing about electricity. I learned a lot from your videos . I was concerned about you lying your arms on this device, and coincidentally just happened., I was going to call your attention on this matters since this kit looks metalíc in the outside. Hope they fix the problem cause I been looking for a kit like this , not just for emergency’s but to have permanently hooked off grid,.. happy New Year and again big thanks.

I should keep watching to the bad stuff" and wow... you weren't kidding. Dangerous may be an understatement. "Deadly" seems more apt.

    Equipment standing, rolling, or sitting on a rack should be grounded before you test anything. Check that new equipment is properly grounded to the case and connected to the building ground. Also, check leakage to the building ground with the power on and off. Stay safe, guys.

    Wow, nice looking units, but I agree with your testing... It could potentially literally " shock the living s*** out of you. One of these units would run my camper for a hell of a long time... With a touch of solar to recharge... Would like to see a secondary review from your channel, as you continue testing this beast...

    Hey Will, big fan of the channel and been around on several youtube accounts for awhile.
    Interestingly enough, I had the same ground leakage issue on one of the eg4 6500ex inverters. It was eventually warrantied and I have a new one that works. In fact it's flawless. First one shocked me when I would lay my forearm across it or touch certain areas. I thought for sure I did something wrong... but my electrician (commercial electrician) and I verified everything was fine. We couldn't figure out why there was voltage potential across different parts of the body of the inverter. Super scary.

    • @stephenfuller2936
      @stephenfuller2936 Год назад +1

      I'm a huge fan of eg4 and respect them 110% but perhaps there needs to be some standard operating procedures / standard installation procedures / standard user safety procedures because inverters are becoming more and more dangerous with the increased PV voltage IMO. It's necessary but safety blatantly falling behind in these Chinese circuits.

      No way!!! That's Awful :( what is your PV array configuration? What kind of solar panels?

      @@WillProwse At the time, I was using 6 Trina Solar TSM-250PA05 in series. I was upgrading from the LVM-es 3000 growatt that has the 250 VOC limit. When I was testing the unit, the panels were on the ground outside on a large concrete slab similar to how you've set some up in the past. Decided on that since it was quick and easy to check connections without having to climb all over my roof or ground mount array.
      Regardless, I thought I was crazy. Actually had no Idea that this was an issue on inverter circuits until I went around the forums. I was measuring all kinds of weird potentials. Like probes on the case of the unit a few inches away from each other was 15-20 volts and other places it was 50. This was back in June 2022 and I know some revisions were made to the units since and my current one is great, except it has the error 61 issue. Thankfully, I'm using DIY LiFePO4 cells so it's a non-issue for me.

    I was shocked! Well technically you were shocked, but I couldn't believe it! How they would let it roll out like that. I'm curious if it has a UL sticker on it. Also curious if the addition of that removable ground point could have had a hand in this?
