You never like watching someone get hurt like this in a game, but what I do enjoy watching is how the players come together at an incident like this. These two teams hate each other. Big rivals! But in the end they are all hockey players and are in there for the same reason, hockey player to hockey player. In the end it's all respect.
Sportsmanship, when sincere, is a beautiful thing to watch. Two seconds after the hit and the Wings players are getting trainers there as fast as possible in exactly the same way they would for their own teammates.
Something I love about hockey is that the camaraderie is strong, they’re in full out brawls other times. Look at how quickly Frk and the other players got help for their opponent.
That's a damn tough man. The guy has intentionally taken a beating for 15 years to sacrifice his body for the team. Hopefully that wasn't the last time he has the opportunity to do it. What a man.
Gerardi finished that season plus one more, retiring after the 2018-19 season with 1070 career games (927 regular season, 143 playoffs) with 64 goals and 236 assists over 13 NHL seasons.
If you watch close enough one of the Red Wings players immediately waves for training staff to come out. Awesome sportsmanship on this aspect. True respect for the wave of the training staff to come out.
I did notice when I was watching this game and again now that it was only Wings players that were helping the trainers get to Girardi. Not to say that his own team mates didn't want to but it shows the sportsmanship of the Wings.
Not to take anything away from the Wings, but i think the Bolts team were so shellshocked they were just froze by what happened, while the Wings team just reacted in pure adrenaline. Regardless was definitely respect and instinct to just help a fellow living member
Wings fan here, but I hope Girardi is doing well. The Wings and Lightning maybe are in a rivalry but we are still human and to see shots like that to the face is really disturbing. Hearts to you.
Mike Wright it's not really a rivalry when Tampa has beaten detroit 14 of the last 15 games. You're probably one of those michigan fans that think state is your rival when you've lost 8 in 10 years to sparty
Geez... I'm an avalanche fan and to see the red wings players help the staff to the injured player is priceless... I love hockey players because they are good people...if the world was like them we would be a better world and this is the evidence...
Reminds me of one year how during a rangers vs flyers game a ranger took a shot and got hurt and the flyers fans cheered about him getting hurt. Wings fans and players show true class and sportsmanship here
When they show that much humanity, care, concern and respect that makes all these players and coaches alike real class acts. Most of the bigger rivals in almost any sport are actually great friends when not in a head-to-head competition. Even the fans showed class and decorum. Watching this gives me a sense of preside and respect even though I don’t know them. I guess in a world like we live in today with so much negativity it is nice to see gestures of kindness, concern for another human’s well-being and pure respect like this.
@@go4thlingen Ikr, that's freaking insane nowadays Vulcanized rubber is hard enough before it's frozen prior to a game and then there's the speed that those pucks are potentially going when they're coming at your head

There are no tougher or more courageous athletes in the world than hockey players. That takes huge guts. Glad he's okay.
I will never get more about Fairplay. I continue to repeat that some Fairplay conduct are more spectacular than fight and hate. See Detroit players beating stick on the ice, Detroit supporters clap their hands... Is amazing.
Jesus, that shot laid him out... I'm glad that at least this didn't end his career or give him neurological damage or anything, he played another entire season before retiring. Hope he's doing well.
At the time, when he was with the Rangers, I always respected his sacrifice against shots but he frustrated me with his accidental deflections in net and screenings etc. But after he left I learned the hard way he was the defensive anchor. I had no idea until today that he held the record for blocked shots. He was great. Wish he won a cup with us. But I read Gallant might want to get him as an assistant and that’d be freaking awesome
The joke regarding Hockey is that fans go to see a fight and sometimes a game breaks out. To prove that is BS, did you see the opposition players basically carrying the doc out on to the ice to get him there asap.
Lol yeah he ended up being fine, even played another season after this. He has his own podcast now called "Block Party with Dan Girardi," and they use the radio announcer's call of this moment as the intro sound byte to their show. Girardi has a very dry sense of humor so that's the exact thing he would find funny
Damn lucky to be alive. An Australian cricketer died a few years ago when he got hit by the cricket ball in a similar spot (Phil Hughes for anyone wanting to know). Here's hoping he heals well!
Notice something about our great game? There is a level of intensity and toughness you are expected to bring against your opponent, but when someone goes down in certain ways, especially when a puck catches someone above the shoulders, you just stop and make sure your bro is ok, it's no fun chirping him if hes hurting and might not be able to play our game again.
Very classy but on another note did anyone else notice that AA is wearing the nhl 100 logo patch on his arm but none of the other players have one on for Detroit
I feel the doctors And players do an amazing job getting help to the injured player. Great job to all involved.. god Bless all the players that they stay safe. Prayers and love to all.💙🙏💙
Patrick Commiskey I’m not sure of the rules however. If a trainers steps foot on the ice for an “injured” player that player must come off the ice. If the stretcher comes on the ice for an “injured” player that player probably has to go to the hospital even if the suspected injury isn’t bad. That’s why trainers like to slow play it so they don’t force a guy off the ice
Rangers fan here and Girardi was always one of my favorites. This guy gives up everything every time he is on the ice. Prayers that he is okay and for a quick recovery Dan Girardi a true warrior.

It's truly hard to believe that not only did players before the 1980s not always wear helmets, some goaltenders as late as the 1960s did not wear masks. There are fewer serious head injuries in hockey than in basketball and football - a testament to the excellence of the equipment.

Martin Frk's shot is the one that caught Girardi, and this year at the AHL All-Star Game he broke the record for hardest shot at 109 mph. Frk's got an arm on him. Happy to see Girardi skating off after that.
I actually feel just as bad for the player whose shot hit Girardi as I do for Girardi himself when he got hit You know that player had to have been kicking himself in the ass thinking, "Oh, F#@$$, What did I do??"
This clip shows why Hedman should have been team captain the past couple years perfectly. No offense to Stamkos but who was the first to take a knee? Who followed? The ALTERNATE captain stammer. Holler at me Mr. Cooper, I can help.

I love how the Detroit players are helping the doctors get there faster
Thought about permanently making someone crippled they understand it’s a game and this guy safety is at stake Detroit also a class operation
well obviously theyre not gonna be like nah let them get there slowly

James Lopez I cried watching them help the doctors get there faster omg people don't have a ❤️😪so sweet

Why don't they get the stretcher out there right away after a shot like that? Why delay?
Patrick Commiskey the skater wants to skate off, they need to do a quick evaluation of the player, if the stretcher isn't needed they'll leave it
They don't need it.
