IB analyst is mosly used as sort of a trampoline for the rest of your career. usually straight out of college you get ~60k-80k in salary and 40k-60k in bonuses, but most IBAs only do that job for a couple years before moving into private equity or hedge funds, where work is less and the pay can get crazy high. they kinda sacrifice two years of their life so that when they are 30-50 they can make 500k or more for much less work

I’m in love with a man that is an investment banker in London as well. I’m currently living in Las Vegas. It’s a long distance relationship and I’m always trying to find ways to better understand him and what life would be like in his shoes. The time difference definitely doesn’t help either. I believe one day we will be married together. Thank you for helping me understand what he has on his plate.
Some people have goals. They aren't planning on doing this for the rest of their lives, just for 2 years before moving on to something else, usually less hours and more money and more interesting work.

@@baz1184 you definitely not talking about a career in finance (or any other i am aware of) that after two years you're done and can go work ''less hours and more money and more interesting work''. for IB you can expect your workload to be quite insane for at least 8 years

People like investment banking because of the learning opportunity, future opportunities and the money. People, at the junior level, generally hate the work and the hours.
This video is so informative and I am gonna study in Oxford because of that reason i've found your channel and yeap good luck. You are the best person who really really motivated me! Again thank you!
I really hope you dig this kind of work, because these working hours are insane. But I can relate to your frustration with small tasks that come during the day. Honestly, most of the communication between people in a corporation is counter productive. If you would just let people focus on the few really core topics you would have to work less than 6 hours a day and probably still generate/support the same amount of business.
You don't, your health, social life and love life all fall to the way side when you sign on to this 200k per year trap, you'll be burned out and lonely like you're 70 at 35. I don't know how people can trade away quality of life for a few more zeros in their bank accounts.
Yeah, generally speaking when I went through it, you get less and less healthy. Fat people get fatter, skinny people get skinnier. If you don't have a relationship, you're unlikely to get one, and If you're in one your S.O. will hate your guts cause you don't spend anytime with them. But still glad I did it....society does give you a lot of leeway as an I-banker though, rightfully or wrongfully. My ex-gf was pretty understanding, and I went to the hospital once for stomach acid build up. I promised myself if I ever ended up in the hospital again, I would quit. (Crazy...now thinking of it...I rationalized that the 2nd trip to hospital would justify leaving a job, not the first. Also...side note...my colleagues still ribbed me for taking 1 day off afterwards. Even though I considered my office to be on the nicer and more family oriented side. Still very big dick attitude among everyone.) Thanks for reading, whomever is still there. Guess I needed some journal therapy...haha.

I’m in social work working backend systems, pretty much the same as you. Emails are your life, and very common to have two earpieces or more lying around for when you need to listen to 2 meetings at once, while always on stand by for phone messages.
Feel you on the “Night Burst” of the workday. Unfortunately commercial banking analyst hours are hitting these levels too as well. (Bank analytics dept manager here). Every deck will be forgotten, keep those client and coworkers relationships close!
I work a very similar job, for the last 3 months it’s been been very full on. I’ve been working 14/15 hour per day, 7 days a week and it just doesn’t seem to make a dent
Can relate a lot to this. Especially when you are operating out of India and are catering to western clients...its way too hectic to match the everybody's timings and make yourself function accordingly. Also, the thing which you mentioned about working on a long project peacefully is very much true....the main part (skeleton) of those decks can be prepared at these peaceful times only and not in between the day answering to all emails .....if you get what I wanna say 😅

Thanks for the video. I’m starting a corporate analyst internship in June at one one the largest banks. So excited, but man I’m not looking forward to the long days 😂 thanks for this 👍
Sorry for the late reply chaps. The internship was really really good. So much insight to the corporate world and got to speak to a lot of top brass at JP. I have been offered a full time role starting in July this year which I’m super excited for and I’m looking forward to starting my career in banking. I worked in the corporate and investment bank but I wasn’t doing investment banking directly. During my 9 week internship I made just under £8k which was pretty awesome. My spot on the grad scheme is a two year rotational role where I will work in 3 different areas across the three banks starting as an analyst. At the end of the two years I get promoted to associate which usually takes 3-4 years outside of the grad scheme route. I get a tasty starting salary which is way higher than the average grad salary and the national average. With that I also get a pretty substantial signing bonus too. If you’re wondering, no I’m not in London. I specifically did not want to live there. My office is in Edinburgh, Scotland. Any direct questions you want to know just leave them in this thread and I will try my best at answering them. Thanks

Suggestion - use keyboard more than the mouse. As you mentioned, most of your time is spent on excel and ppt, and through the video snippets, I observed that you were using the mouse more than the keyboard. Maybe you could start using excel and ppt shortcuts and save time. Even I use the same tools through the day and hardly use the mouse (trust me, there’s a keyboard shortcut for everything, it comes with practice, takes time initially, but nothing as compared to the time you will end up saving, you will be amazed).

Well made and pretty insightful. I have a couple of friends from uni who went the IB route and both have now bailed after having breakdowns. I can understand entirely how that would happen. I think I had a lucky escape ending up following a data engineering path instead. Sometimes the hours are long (key projects, big migrations etc...) but I typically get away with a 10 - 6 standard working day with a fair amount of flexibility. Granted, the remuneration isn't at the same level, but it's still far more than enough , and I actually have some free time for socialising, gaming and hobbies/side-projects. Do you see this as a long-term career or is the idea to grind for a couple of years and then switch industry?
I really liked this video and I would really like to join IB. Could you do a video where you explain what would be the basic excel skills and functions used? :)

Basically, IBs act as an advisor. Usually in two areas: M&A (which is when one company wants to buy or merge with another company) and IPO (which is when a company issues stock for the first time). So IBs will be advising on these transactions. In practice, for junior analysts, that often does mean doing excel and powerpoints. Powerpoints, for example, would be done to pitch different options for a company who is interested in investing in a different company (M&A). After a company has agreed, and an M&A transaction has started, in practice, junior analysts would work on excel. They would basically try to figure out all the details of the M&A and how beneficial it would be in terms of increasing cash flow. More senior employees would work more on client relationships and overseeing the excel/powerpoints that junior employees do.

Of course, as long as he’s happy - but not many people in IB are! The 80hr weeks and hierarchical power structures, where you have little autonomy, often grate even if it is a prestigious job

i really don’t get why everybody is hyping investment banking so much. look at this guys eyes in the evening. to me this is just sad. you’re throwing away your free time (time you could e.g. use to read books and to really expand your horizon) and your health, at least on the physical side. and on top of that, salaries are not so great in relation to the high amount of working hours. don’t get me wrong - if you love it so much that you think it’s worth it: great, go for it. but never would i ever throw away sleep, health etc.

Love the Video! I‘m currently still in high school but definitely want to work in IB after Uni!
I love your attitude! This video just makes me feel like I really do want to go into investment banking.
Just a bit of advice, look at the reasons people hate IB as well as why they like it
People like investment banking because of the learning opportunity, future opportunities and the money. People, at the junior level, generally hate the work and the hours.
This video is so informative and I am gonna study in Oxford because of that reason i've found your channel and yeap good luck. You are the best person who really really motivated me! Again thank you!
This is a lot like public accounting in busy szn. I can relate to this guy a lot. Hope he gets paid well lol
How do you stay fit? Your sitting all day long?
I'm not in investment banking haha (I used to be in recruitment) but have a few friends that are in IB/law but this was really insightful to watch, love your vlogging aesthetics and really miss the British accent haha (I used to study/work in London for a few years at LCF) but hello from Australia!
how did you go from a major in computer science and philosophy to becoming an analyst banker
I’m in social work working backend systems, pretty much the same as you. Emails are your life, and very common to have two earpieces or more lying around for when you need to listen to 2 meetings at once, while always on stand by for phone messages.
