- Here we visit Prien am Chiemsee Germany and Chiemsee Lake on a day trip from Munich. Prien am Chiemsee Germany is just a train trip away from Munich. On this day trip from Munich to Prien am Chiemsee Germany we take a ride on the Chiemsee-bahn steam railway to the docks for the Prien am Chiemsee boat trip across Chiemsee lake to the island of Herreninsel. On Herreninsel we explore Herrenchiemsee Palace and it's extensive gardens which include some magnificent fountains. Then we move on to explore the island and the many viewpoints the island has to offer over Chiemsee Lake and the far off mountains. To round off the day take another Chiemsee Lake boat trip and the return trip on the Chiemsee-bahn steam railway to round off a wonderful day out.
The journey starts with an approximately 1 hour train trip from Munich to Prien am Chiemsee where buying a Bayern ticket is the best option. You can buy a Bayern ticket using the DB Navigator application on your phone, or from the web site at int.bahn.de/en/offers/regiona... or if you prefer from the ticket machines at any railway station. The Bayern ticket is especially cost effective if travelling in a group.
Once at Prien am Chiemsee we then get a combined return ticket for the Chiemsee-bahn steam railway and the Prien am Chiemsee boat trip to Herreninsel. The steam train takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the boat dock and the boat trip to Herreninsel also takes about 10-15 minutes. The Chiemsee-bahn steam railway in Bavaria, Germany is one of the oldest continuous steam operated railways in the world. It has been in operation since 1887.

For the ticket to the guided tour of the Herrenchiemsee palace you can buy your ticket at the ticket office which is 2 minutes walk from the boat dock. The guided tours are done in either German, English or Italian and the tour takes approximately 40 minutes.

Hi Nick , I'm glad you enjoyed the trip out and the views I managed to capture. The weather on the day certainly helped with capturing those views. I did feel on this occasion that music would have killed the video a bit so went with natural so I'm glad it was a positive move. i thought I could fill any gaps with some narration plus I was talking on my way around too. I also found that my videos that have picked up recently have been music free so that was another pointer. I'm not sure if or how I could sell the crunchy walking sound but it'd be good if I could. Hi Paul. German trains and ferries are very beautiful and clean. Steam locomotives give a sense of history. And I couldn't imagine that there was such a beautiful palace on this island.
When I saw the garden, I thought it resembled the Palace of Versailles, and it was 😊Of course the lake is amazing, but this greenery forest is beautiful, I love it.

Some really great information throughout Paul, appreciate your trip, love love love the views around Chiemsee and the lake, the tram style train is amazing, what a great way to see around the town. You really managed the beautiful weather too! Nice to see, what a calm and relaxing boat ride. Those Bavarian alps really are wonderful. The palace is such a gorgeous place, so nice to see around the gardens, so pretty. Enjoyed listening to the history surrounding it too. How fun to take a train in. Herrenchiemsee palace and gardens look incredible. Wow, the gardens and grounds are so manicured and immaculent. Beautiful! Georgeous fountain! Love the horse carriage rides going by. The architecture of the palace itself is stunning. So regal and detailed. The view points have stunning views. So nice to have the place to yourself. Beautiful green wooded pathways from viewpoint to viewpoint. The lake is beautiful. Love the farm area too. St. Maria church looks so quaint and lovely there. It still looks so good. The Chiemsee lake boat ride is the perfect way to wrap up the adventure. Fantastic video as always :)

Hi Ms Kayak, I did some water stuff 😂 It sure was a great weather day for it and I enjoyed all those views on the day so I'm glad they came across on video. I would not have gone in the palace had I known you could not take photos or video but it good to see anyway. This was quite a time consuming edit so thanks. I hope my documentary voice is back to normal now. I know I enjoy the mountains, of which there is some to come from this trip, but I also enjoy this kind of thing too. In fact I have another video where I'm at lakes and I'd say it was the best day of the trip. The views just blew me away. We're so jealous of your transportation system. I wish we could get around better without a car. Very helpful video for anyone wanting to make an afternoon of this on their own. Beautiful ferry ride! The fountains look amazing. It's crazy to think how things were built over generations compared to today if it takes more than a few month people think something is wrong. Some very beautiful views around the trails. Very cool farm, barn, beautiful church. This looks like a great afternoon adventure.
The public transportation system for this trip was awesome. Pretty much from my hotel door to the palace with very little walking. and with very varied transportation. The palace was pretty cool. Nice train ride and boat ride with gorgeous scenery on the calm lake. I love the view of the palace in the distance, quite the property they have with impressive fountain and landscaping. I can imagine how beautiful the inside of the palace looks. I would mind hanging out at that nice beach. Thank for sharing your exciting trip Paul. 👍😊🇨🇦

The weather sure did help make the day/ The inside of the palace was quite extravagant and not totally finished with some areas completely bare. Hi Paul, well this was a really lovely day trip. The train journey was fabulous. The boat trip amazing. Loved the views over the lakes with the mountain s in the background. I have muscle pain as mentioned several mile hike with continuous 500ft per mile elevation gain gave me quite sore muscle, but no cramps.
Sure thing Ms Kayak. Best thing for sore legs is keep them moving. Go for a short easy walk, your legs will thank you later 🙂

Hi Matt, well Ms Kayak is always saying she needs a Starbucks. And this trip sure did have a bit of everything and it was good to get out of the city. While the island was lovely I didn't fancy being stranded there and kipping in the church entrance or something 😂 It was a great day out aided by that amazing weather. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Paul this looked fabulous and you really gave a lot of good information for those wanting to visit, so informative and the trains look lovely there ! I would love to do that lake boat ride and the island looked beautiful and peaceful. The palace was majestic looking and there seemed a lot to walk around in the grounds which have great views. The mountains around here look very inviting for a hike too which I'm sure you went up ! That was great and it looks like you had a lovely time 🙂👍~ Anna

Not really explored Germany but this looks so pretty and i really loved the big park with the cool fountain :D such gorgeous buildings too x the boat ride was so nice, the water looked so calm and relaxing. Despite growing up in Germany, I've never been to Chiemsee. The palace at least from the few images looks a lot more moderne and cleaner than the palace of versailles. Quite a nice place to visit, but I sure prefer your adventures in the Scottish mountains. The lake itself used to be quite famouse when I was young. At least I remember countless sweaters "Chiemsee". But what could be bad about a lake and some mountains nearby.
Well I needed to spread my wings a bit and fancied a trip to Germany and Austria. This one was a little different but I enjoyed the trip out, especially the places where less people were. This day trip was just a filler before I moved onto the Berchtesgaden Natioanal Park where I'll still be doing tourist things, I guess, but some of it will be in the mountains. It was a case of so many things to see so little time. I do enjoy my Scotland adventures too. Thanks for watching 👍Paul
