Two Weeks of Diversity in the Central Pacific | Nautilus Live

- Over the past two weeks, the E/V Nautilus has been exploring within and nearby the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument and our team has been delighted with the diversity and brilliance of all the creatures we’ve seen on our dives. This highlight video includes glimpses of high-density sponge and coral communities featuring some wonderful critters. See if you can spot the three-foot-long deep red hydrozoid, brightly colored corals including Iridogorgia spiraled firework coral and the purple Victorgorgia alba octocoral, anemones like the long-tentacled Relicanthus daphneae and venus fly-trap, brotulas and bathysaurus fish, snake stars, deep-sea snails and worms, benthic ctenophores, and zoanthids galore!
At over 400,000 square miles, the monument surrounds seven low-lying islands and atolls, protected as National Wildlife Refuges. The total area of the monument is nearly five times the size of all the US National Parks COMBINED and nearly twice the size of the state of Texas. The monument includes 165 known seamounts that are hotspots of species abundance and diversity. It is one of the most pristine tropical marine environments in the world, and vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and ocean acidification.

Meagan putts is my favorite scientist on this expedition. So passionate! ❤️ I'm glad i can hear her voice again after the previous 2021 expedition on the south of Hawaiian islands.
Funny you should mention her. Do you happen to know her approximate age? I had a first-year Chemistry teacher in high school by the name of Megan Putz (she insisted it was pronounced "puts"). She was extremely young then, which would put her in her mid- to late- 50s now. It's probably not the same woman, but...

It was such a great time to watch along from home :) Some great sights, neat creatures and I even got a shout-out on the live stream (as did others, but my 1st lol) Made me feel like I had my name said on the radio, back when that was a thing or ppl cared about radio lol.

No Oreo fish, Enypniastes (swimming sea cucumber), dumbo octopus, or crabs with anemone on their shells! Just too many amazing highlights from this expedition I guess. Glad we got the bathysaurus though and a least one "Zoom in Dave" in there. Great work everyone. I love these deep sea dives more than anything. Can't wait for Hercules and Argus' next adventure. Also a live chat would be amazing. Either on youtube or another platform. I would love to chat in real time with other fans.

As someone who often finds deep-sea creatures weird and sometimes disgusting, then hearing marine biologists react the same way is oddly reassuring

Gorgeszza. Though with Kens description of an eel is not an eel. It's a fish if it has gills, fins or scales. This species has fins & gills.

Yea they actually did get a sample of it later on and it jumped off the wall as was expected and took a bit if a cruise Im surprised they didn't show it actually.

Whoever the male scientist is describing the animals and coral in detail rushes the camera imagery (the one describing the purple victorgorgia). There is not enough time to see anything and often the coverage misses out on staying long enough to see or the shots aren’t out on wide, medium and close like the other team. Then he rushes the shot on and stops says ‘that’s enough’. Just feedback. Otherwise this is an amazing tour with the life I have never seen before.

Yea they are benthic ctenophores definitely related not much is really know about them so its possible they could be life stage of ones that spend a part of the time in the water column ot they could live on the bottom their whole lives. They arent the easiest to collect but they have gotten a few over the last few expediirions so hopefully we will find out more in the ear future!

Well hed have to catch it first! These snails got some moves and shouldn't be underestimated! They are proof that random flailing is a viable strategy tho lol

Do you ever look for ancient civilizations? Any human focused stuff?
In 2012 they come across "garbage" from ancient shipwreck (if i remember correctly over 2000years old), but I don't think they're necessarily knew what they going to found at that site. A year later, they explored shipwrecks that sank over 200years ago, but this time they knew what they're looking for and it's their missions to help archeologist to learn about the history of the shipwrecks.
Have they discovered any new animals? I'm watching these weird looking creatures, almost alien-like, and they say "oh yeah that's a * proceeds to say weird long name *" and i'm like what the hell 😂😂 is almost like they know every animal beforehand
