New Zealand’s Chatham Islands, a rocky archipelago, include Te Tara Koi Koia (the Pyramid), which is the only breeding ground of the vulnerable Chatham albatross. Some 5,000 breeding pairs nest there each year. During April and July, most fly 6,000 miles to the southwest coast of South America, following the current north to Peru. To bolster the population of the birds, the Chatham Islands Taiko Trust has ferried 300 Chatham albatross chicks to a predator-proof enclosure on the main island. This video chronicles the harrowing adventure through the eyes of author and novelist Jonathan Franzen, photographer Thomas Peschak, and Mike Bell of the Chatham Islands Translocation Project.
The global population of seabirds has dropped by nearly 70 percent since monitoring began in the 1950s. Each of the nine orders of these birds, from transoceanic voyagers such as albatrosses to shore-hugging penguins, is facing at least one of four key threats: habitat disturbance, pollution, climate change, and commercial fishing.
National Geographic is partnering with the National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to celebrate the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The seabirds that live on Te Tara Koi Koia are at risk of being extinct in the next 20 years or so due to them only breeding at The Pyramid. What are your thoughts on the conservationists bringing them to a new location to breed?
It's an amazing conservation effort, but I'm curious and worried about something. Much like how Chinese caretakers in panda conservation centers dress as pandas to ensure that the animals will not get used or attached to humans, how will the fledglings react to humans now that they have been transplanted onto an area where humans regularly visit? Will this mean that they would begin to be comfortable around us, losing their wariness? We know the positive and negative effects were that to happen. There was no mention of this in the video, so does this mean this aspect was either not considered, or is irrelevant?

The birds most likely won't be around humans all that often. They take the chicks when they're close to maturing. Their interaction would probably be very limited and not enough to leave them accustomed to humans.
I guess the only way for them to become accustomed to being around humans would be if the initial first generations of birds that they put there do not return in large enough numbers. If this were to happen they would probably try to bring more birds to the intended nesting site.
This would have to continue for quite a while seeing as they only spend a short amount of time around the chicks. It would have to happen throughout the span of multiple generations.
This is called insincere aid. In the back of their mind, they will exploit for tourism, having familiar with human present around. Money driven.
Leave them alone. This is not just, taking babies from the mother. Youre Trump supporter. Shame on you.
Why do you have to steal the chicks?!?!?!
Impressive. Probably the first time I've heard people trying to create a new colony of birds for the sake of conservation at this quite big of a scale. I wonder how it will affect the main island ecosystem. Hope it works for the best. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
Great comment^^
We're so glad you enjoyed watching, Azliana! Hopefully with the Chatham Island Albatross being transferred to a predator-proof island on the mainland, they will live much longer than expected.
I saw another one with different birds that were even more impressive then this. It was another bird that only goes to one spot but other birds invaded the spot and were talking over the breeding spot and the bird were in big danger. The funny thing is that there was other land right next to it but the birds won’t go there on their own but they did something like this. I wish i could remember more so you could look it and watch it.
this was done for eagles too, due to DDT. see channel islands of california on google
Who would win?
-Many scientists dedicated to this field, and after studying these birds for years have come up with a solution to save the species from extinction
-"you shouldn't seperate them from their parents 😭😭😭" -youtube commenter that calls every waterbird a seagull
A Bird Lover exactlyyyy!!
I like the seagulls in the video.
Zepo So do I lol
Those scientist are experts and we don’t even know if those comments known about this
Pretty sure scientist wins
Jax Well yes, it's almost like that's the point of my comment
They’re such gorgeous animals I hope their species can live on forever!!
Those birds almost look fake
Dovahkiin KhajiitMaster they look like they’re digitally animated
As he said they put up some decoys with the real birds so that they think its a real colony
Please don't tell me you are one of those morons who believe birds are government drones
inventions come from animals
lucky for whoever's job it was to build the dummy birds for the new colony lol
*It looks soooo beautiful in the fog!!*

If you hve watched how to train your gragon it reminds you of a part of the secong film.
All of these people are truly amazing. My only wish is that I was there to help!
We can all help by doing our part. Go Vegan and stop supporting the needless cruelty and suffering of innocent beings like these! Or at the very least, stop eating their fish!!!!!
@@1light4love I hope you'll be able to answer this, as I haven't come across a vegan who can:
What is going to happen to all the farm animals if you guys ever got your way? They've been domesticated for so long, they'd never be able to be freed. There would be no money in it for the farmers anymore, so they wouldn't be looking after them.
So what happens? They become a pet for rich people? Cos that's what they'd become.
THANK YOU FOR SAVING THE PLANET AND THE BIRDS. I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Birds.
The Pyramid lowkey reminds me of the dragon nest from the first 'How To Train Your Dragon' movie 😂
I love how the parent birds are beautiful birdy drag queens but the babies are muppets
It’s like the same for humans because we come out looking like potatoes
My favorite bird ,thank you all for the amazing job in saving them. 👍
Amazing. Thank you for posting this.
One of those albatross boxes.... Albatroxes 😏
"They will vomit exorcise style" lol
Thanks to nat geo,all the conservationist, photographer to aware us for nature and environment....

Great work👍👍👍
And thx Nat Geo for sharing ur experience

Thank you guys for all you do
GBYOU guy's for your unselfishness to help save this species of beautiful birds thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Respect for all the effort you're putting into this, you guys are real life superheroes.
We can all help by doing our part. Go Vegan and stop supporting the needless cruelty and suffering of innocent beings like these! Or at the very least, stop eating their fish and reduce your plastic use!!!!!
That's so Amazing what a accomplishment 💞😍
I'm so thankful for their efforts.
Namaste `
We're thankful as well, Jharie! Hopefully these efforts help increase the numbers of these beautiful birds.
Thanks for sharing, I pray it works.
I tried this with human children but the results were not as positive.
Same dude they kept screaming at me I’m like, “dude I’m saving you”
This comment is terrible
@@devinxander102 It's good commentary on what they're doing to these baby birds for the sake of saving them
@@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa790 no I get it but just The way I read the comment struck the wrong way in my opinion
@@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa790 it's a joke
I love this channel! ❤️
Thumbs way up to everyone involved.
Good job! I hope this works, can’t wait to see the results.
Woow~ Amazing feats! Really hope everything turns out well for these pretty birds.
I know many nz birds and I knew nothing about this one, its beautiful.
They certainly are beautiful, I hope the plan works!
Don't just hope. Do your part. Go Vegan! Or at the very least, stop eating their fish!!!!!
It looks like a lost island from Jurassic Park.
this is amazing
Abducting them for their own good
It sounds like this is doomed to fail. We shrunk their ecological niche (less food, more predators), and our solution is to cram MORE organisms into it?
@@HebaruSan you need faith
the relocated birds ENDED UP RETURNING to the Pyramid Rock Island not to the new main island they were moved to. they proudly put 14,000 volunteer hours into this project, and I thank all those kind people that wanted to do a good thing, and they helped science learn a quite costly lesson
Thank you 😊
Magnificent looking bird
Really cool! Hope it works!!
Parabéns pelo seu trabalho lindo 👏👏👏👏
Does anyone have an update on this? Thank you.
Great!
Jonathan Franzen should make a lot more appearances in media. I really love his book, "Farther Away".
Please give me daily update of national geographic documetaries.
OMG they're like the statue of liberty 😂 they're so fricking cutetetetete
We humans should help all the animals... So that they won't be endanger or getting extinct!
Cool
The Chatham albatross looks cool
humans, to help or extinct other beings.❤️💛💚 the positive human beings.

Year of the bird...
Now my new favorite year. Period.
Franzen saving the birds?? Crazy!
They were born on the island so there is nothing stopping them from going back there.
My name is Korg, this is my friend Miek and we're getting on that big rock to save some birds from extinction. Wanna come?

Hi I'm albatross lover! Albatrosses aren't werry popular animals, but they still be best for me.
one love, thank you :' )
Good luck dudes,
nice
Wow cool to watch?
Very interesting
Challenging enough❤❤❤❤❤
Why people dont watch these things?
I don't know but your right
some people choose to live in a stasis of ignorance or haven't developed any passions for biology and or learning and conversely i dont watch reality tv shows for the same reason
Your right again u need two more thumbs up

I hope it works albatross is a beautiful species.... otherwise the planets going to be a dull dusty ball
Bro you should be the next president i never met anybody that has this much common sense.
They need to stop albatross hunting for the lucrative British theater snack industry.
New Message great now have a craving for albatross
People always love to meddle with the flow of nature!
Any update this 2021? Was this breeding successful?
Waiting for a followup video to confirm the results, i am lil nervous about it. hope we played the right move for them.
This comes from the assumption that these birds have their own language, so imagine if the recording of the birds is actually saying 'i love fish' and it is played over and over again
"kill all humans" 😂
It's not nice to fool mother nature! Lol. Sorry, the OLD TV commercial came to mind. Valiant effort! Best of luck to the birds and those humans involved. 🐦🐦
They should put some on another island too, seems like plenty of islands around them.
Nice shot
Those are like dodos
I really hope this works out.
ചാത്തൻ island 😱 it's a cool name tho
Te Tara Koi Koia, Never heard this Pyramid Like Refugee before.
"It sounds easy."
Does it though? :)
CAN WE GET AN UPDATE VIDEO ON THIS?
We can't even allow animals that should be thriving with wide ranges like gorillas and elephants. What makes people think they can save a species that is so extremely vulnerable already?
the birds must have left the main islands long time ago for a reason, I doubt this can end up well. I will be easier for humans to take care of them, just from human's perspective
Beautiful animals.
"Our fisheries are literally taking fish.. out of the seabirds' beaks." Oh, hm. I wonder what could be done about that
I remember that scene in Phineas and Ferb...
We humans ruin everything that is good in the world don't we? I am glad there are consevationists like them
Hello 👏
May God protect these amazing birds against the carnage of Humans.
Mars of The Albatros.
Let me tell you all a story about a mouse named Lorry
ernesto jr mobo The song
Oh i know this. Those mouse and rats eat the babies while the parents are gone. I may have seen this pest problem.
This is an odd question but though the fledglings might return to breed, wouldn't they think that the humans will feed their chicks in instead of feeding the chicks themselves?
Are there any updates on this?
Invisibill?? Pun intended?
Please tell the people if the birds return
Obviously its the point of the whole movement
They didn't. They went back to the original colony. This year 8 males were found back with the rest of the albatrosses.
Someone please comment here, when they return. I am excited and looking forward to it.
There cuttest 😍
PLEASE GIVE AN UPDATE IT’S 2020
Have any of the birds come back to the island yet?
Wonder what are endangered vs non endangered ration is. Minus insects. Seems like just about everything is almost gone. Lions, tigers, bears, eagles, crocs. Fish, penguin, panda, kowalas 🐨, elephants, this list is never ending.
So what happened afterwards....did it worked?
*Oh*
What was the stuff on the shore when the guy landed on the rock?
yum
Any progress in 2020? They should be adult now.
any update yet?
This was published only a few days ago. They said they expect them back within a couple years.
No update, almost all the chicks fledged successfully though
Update March 2019.....8 of them returned to their original colony with all the rest of the albatrosses. So so far it's been a failure.
