  • Episode 34: CKD stage 5 RENAL DIET: What I ate that helped get me from being used to high-sodium fast food to stage 3. Not everyone is a great chef and for me cooking is something I have almost no experience doing. I work with a renal dietitian to set my nutritional goals and limits and then shop for items that allowed me to stay on target, yet could be easily made at home and while traveling (I travel a lot). I'm still learning to cook my own meals (starting with Stir Fry) and one day look forward to being a great at-home dad chef. In this video you'll see that a renal diet doesn't have to be difficult to follow as long as you know your nutritional goals and limits and track what you eat to stay within those goals. For me, limiting sodium has been the biggest challenge so far. It can be difficult to find foods lower in sodium without cooking your meals for yourself. To find out what your nutritional targets are, please work with a renal dietitian - even if you can't cook they can help you during your transition.
Some of my favorite foods that are helping me while I learn to cook are shown in this video. I wish I was able to go cold turkey and start cooking all my meals tomorrow, but it's taking me a lot of time to learn to cook things that actually taste good (you don't want to hear about the extra low sodium Chili I've tried to make - I don't even think the dogs would eat it). Tracking my meals has been extremely helpful and made it easy to find quick and easy meals to fit my busy life. My goal is to learn to cook and then prep for the entire week. I know it's possible and I'm excited to get to that point.
Figuring out what to eat when you are stage 5 or stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) can be a real challenge and your Chronic Kidney Disease diet (also known as a Renal diet) is critical to improving kidney function and getting to stage 3 and beyond. When I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 my Docs couldn’t really give me a list of safe foods to eat, they just gave me lots of random renal diet information on don’t eat this, don’t eat that, avoid these. Finding out the best Chronic Kidney Disease Diet / Renal Diet to help my kidney function improve and avoid kidney failure was difficult - but I did it and today I share what worked for me to improve my kidney function and get me to stage 3. I was left on my own to find the best kidney disease treatment that would help me improve my kidney function and avoid kidney failure (end stage renal failure) and dialysis.
I had all of the typical symptoms of Chronic Kidney disease - fatigue, limited appetite, nausea, and insomnia.
I’m going to share with you the most common things I ate in a typical week on my renal diet. It may not work for everyone - you may have allergies, you may have another condition that restricts your diet, we are each different when it comes to our Chronic Kidney Disease diet. Hopefully this will help you to see what I ate on my renal diet which helped me go from stage 5, to stage 4, to stage 3 in only 6 months.

Do you believe that stage 5 went down to stage 3? I doubt it coz kidney once damaged is irreversible…. You can only slow its progression through diet if you are disciplined. There’s no such thing as what James is saying that he was formerly stage 5, down to stage 3. If that is so, it’s incredible!

I was level 4 ckd but, after watching your videos and changing my diet to mainly blueberries, raspberry, cherries, & strawberries , my kidneys are now up to a level 2.

Just as you said... my Dr. said chronic kidney failure is er-reversable!
I showed her my Nephrology report & she was shocked!
I still & will continue eating my assorted berries & nuts!!
I wanted to thank you for posting your videos.

I want to thank you for the videos of your fantastic journey through Kidney Disease. At first I was skeptical, because at stage 4 kidney disease doctors were saying my kidney function would only worsen, not improve, but I decided to give your advice a try, couldn’t hurt. Because my labs showed a GFR of 24, a creatinine of 2.69 and a bun of 77, my doctor scheduled me to have a vein mapping done for the insertion of a fistula to be used for dialysis that was going to happen soon. But after watching your videos and following your guidelines, I greatly improved my readings to a GFR of 48, a creatinine of 1.51 and a bun of 26 in only one month. My doctor was amazed and said to hold off on any dialysis preparations that I was now a stage 3A. I am going to continue following your advice and hope to improve even better. Again thank you for changing my outlook on living with Kidney Disease.

@@jksatte Right off the bat I stopped eating all meat. Went on a plant based diet. Drank only water and a lot it. 4 cups of Black coffee in the morning then 67 oz. bottled water the rest of the day. Hard at first but got used to it. For breakfast, 3 fried eggs and toast with no-salt butter every other day. Shredded wheat with blue berries and strawberries the rest of the time. Lots of blue berries, about 2 ounces in cereal and 2 ounces strawberries with 1/2 cup of 2% milk. I like Amy's frozen plant based dinners, so I eat them 4 or 5 times a week. Never added salt to anything only pepper. Not much of a cook but sometimes I fry up peppers and onions in a little olive oil and a lot of seasonings for taste. Lettuce, tomato, celery and onion salads with low salt dressing. ( hard to find ). I use tomato sauce and spices and cook green beans, sometimes spaghetti cause I love tomato sauce. It' really very high in Potassium but my blood levels seem to be in the normal range so I cook with it a couple times a week. I have diabetes, so no sugar, but carbs are a problem. I also eat nuts, all kinds, usually unsalted ones about 1 ounce a few times a week.. That's about it. By the way, had blood work done last month and my GFR is now 51.
Hope this helps. If I can do it, anyone can. good luck.

Great to have you here Pat. One note is that we are each a little different, and your dietitian will help you to know HOW MUCH of key nutrients (like potassium, phosphorus, fiber, etc.) you need. Then you can eat based on what you need - making it easier to not over burden your kidneys while focusing on your overall health. It gets easier with time - today I feel like I can go anywhere and eat (I know what my limits are and I stay within those).

I am only 27 and I have polycystic kidney disease (a hereditary one) in which I was diagnosed with as a child. I read about kidney disease and see things like it’s basically a death sentence and it makes me so nervous! Thanks Dadvice. I love your positivity. I was diagnosed with stage 3 efgr 33 in 2014 and I had to cut down meat and increase water intake and regular exercise. I wasn't much of a drinker which is the main culprit for my kidney disease. I have been on stage 3 since then, but 6 months ago my efgr dropped to 26 which scared me. I turned vegan, eat more fibre and watch my sodium & potassium intake. My efgr went back up to 33. I feel empowered by your positivity and your determination to move to stage 2 which I didn't think it's possible from what I read online. Hey, if Dadvice can do it, so can I!

No special diet, nothing! Before he retired on 4-1 he wrote in his doctor’s notes that I was Stage 3, possibly Stage 4 kidney problems. Still did not tell me. He said my pre-diabetes issues probably caused my CKD over the years! Exasperating! I have always been under a doctor’s care but have not been advised about my issues! For me, the most important parts of all of this comes down to stopping further damage and using nutrition/diet to give my body what it needs (not too much, not too little) while reducing stress and the burden placed on my kidneys. I recently added Renadyl ( www.dadvicetv.com/renadyl ) to my treatment strategy - took it for 90 days and got new labs - lowest BUN and CREATININE levels since being diagnosed! I encourage you to check it out and talk to your new doctor about using it as part of your diet. Good luck and always feel free to reach out! He's hungry and can't have salt, potassium or phosphorus and just a very small amount of liquids. I can't get very much help from these doctors for what he can have. He's just so depressed and I know he is very scared and they want him to go get dialysis. It's so hard because he's not been sick much during his life. Has high Blood pressure. He's just sleeping now so much and wakes up like he's in a fog at times. I'm so afraid everytime I try to make him food that has any tastes to it. I give him mostly chicken salad and egg whites. Can any one help me. Theyvsay no frozen dinners no red meat, no nothing and only one piece of white bread. All I do is worry and cry with fear for him. He doesn't want dialysis and none of us his brother or sister or myself can give him a kidney. I'm too old and the rest have other factors that they cannot either. He's a very young 50s and he just melting away. In this world we now live in the doctors aren't very caring or helpful at all. The naturopath we took him too gave us some pills to take that are very expensive along with the other pills his doctor gives him for blood pressure and to help him to urinate which he can . They don't seem to be helping and his depression is just hurting my heart. Think You for reading this long sad story but I'm just frightened for him and fearful I'll feed the wrong thing to him. He's very smart but has ADHD and has a problem with reading these things for himself.❤

No he is not diabetic. Sorry it took me a few days to answer. I'm just worn out from worrying about this stuff. They have vein mapped him but have not said when he would be put on the dialysis, which we are trying to keep him off of it. He doesn't want to do that, I'm sure no one wants to do that either.
His GFR is around 13 I think.

@@littlewolfspirit7373 if not, diet won’t be very difficult. My dad is both CKD stage 5 and diabetic, so I had to clarify.
I’ll send you a list of ingredients that you can use.

Thank you Roni! I started all of this not to be generous, but to keep me focused on getting better and to give me something to do which made me feel productive. My doctor recommended it - and in a way I have everyone who watches my videos pushing me to keep going and getting better. It is that amazing support from our community that helps all of us to see the possibilities and reach for them. Without the support from each other, it would be too easy to give up on this journey. I'm so proud of what has become of Dadvice TV - it has become a resource of information, motivation, and inspiration for so many. And most importantly, it has become a voice of the kidney patient - a voice that is made up of all of our voices. Thank you again!

You don’t need fiber & definitely avoid bread I’d be doing straight Carnivore actually.

Please don’t go Carnivore. The meat will kill the kidneys. Better to go Plant based.

James thank you for your help on what to east. It does become fairly complicated to find foods ok to eat on a stage four kidney diet! I am fairly new at this ,I didn't know I had a kid ey problem until I LEFT THE HOSPITAL THE LAST TIME. They sad I had Covid, but I really don't think so. I'm seventy give years old next week and I have had COPD for fifteen years now. I get Bronchitis every couple of years that puts me in the hospital for awhile. I believe it is all that I had again,it was No different then the other times. I'm older and I think they needed more Covid papients is what I believe! Crazy world these days! Well thank you once again, I'll try to find some of these items, well anyway they said I went from a 3-4 during that stay,. I one had ever told me I was a three, I would have been more careful off my diet. Tell Doctors to please tell us sooner.
