I like what he did. He returned a working laptop. Not a gaming laptop, but a working one. I wonder how many repair shops or even other youtubers stop at the point the GPU and VRAM are shorted and call it a no fix then use the board as a parts donor. At least Sorin gave the customer a positive option and the machine works for daily tasks. Some may disagree, but if you are upset the dead components can't be fixed or that the laptop is no longer good for gaming then take it up with manufacturer for offering a "gaming laptop" that essentially is meant to fail just by default design. Remember desktop computers? Yeah they have been banished from existence in lieu of portability. But the desktop design is the true gaming machine and offers SO MUCH more to the experience without dying from heat or shit components. I use a desktop over a laptop 95% of the time. Some I use are over 15 years old and work awesome. Laptops these days are like cars where they die soon and expensively. Good job Sorin!
The one benefit of a laptop is the portability. In every other way it is defeated by the desktop PC. Those who have a laptop but not a PC are plugging in external keyboards, mice, monitors to try and overcome _some_ of the laptop compromises when they do not require the portability. Depending on the laptop and the task that can be adequate, but the potential of a PC will always far exceed any laptop. Horses for courses.
We do not see many PCs being repaired because PCs are more reliable than laptops, and major components are readily available and standardized. There is not that investment in proprietary integration that you have with a laptop. PCs are not dead!
you said it all
he did a bad repair. the vram wasn't shorted. 9 ohms are ok for those chips. he messed up.
Please read Sorin:
I doubt the VRAM and GPU were dead, you ended up getting 1.29v on the VRAM (Normal) and a booting laptop with one VRAM mosfet.
I could be wrong, not saying you're wrong either Sorin, just doubtful the VRAM is dead, why?
3:44 - You have a filter getting hot before the mosfet, which is the lowest resistance and to me indicates the mosfet is shorted to ground. The mosfet in question is a dual mosfet, you will find the DRAIN and SOURCE got shorted to ground, meaning the VRAM line got shorted to ground (0ohms) not to 19v and is why your reading went from 0ohms to 9ohms after removing bad mosfet. The fact the VRAM is getting hot is not an indication of a short, GDDR6 gets very hot, it has a low resistance.
I believe if you replaced the bad mosfet, it would have been fine.
I agree. I will add that when highside mosfet got shorted, in rare cases, the load can be not burned. Why? Because there is a big inductor before the load that resist to a sudden current rise (and voltage to the load is not the one of the main power rail instantly)... so, if the protection circuit switch the laptop off quick enough, the load, sometime, survive. Again, it's rare, we all know, but it makes sense to test, especially if you test the gpu/vram with the bench psu and you don't find a specific hot spot on the crystal itself.
I belive the GPU can be alive, what about entering in BIOS after remove the shorted MOSFET and see if BIOS recognize the GPU?
the vram its not shorted, 9ohms its perfectly normal for a samsung gddr6/x, also it gets very hot, in idle they are at 50c with heatsink, please revisit this one, also thats a dual mosfet u have very high chances that 11v/19v was sent to the ground, the 0ohm reading that u had can be a confirmation, also the heat signature on vrams was perfectly normal
did you meant dual mosfet as in one mosfet that serves the role of two (high&low side mosfts) or did you just meant that we have two mosfters instead of 4. also would the gpu work with one single dual mosfet for you to think that the one shorted mosfet that has gotten removed would have been more then suffice for the gpu to work... thank you
Sorin check this please
Clear and fast explained. Thanks for your videos
The gpu and vram should be a modular design so we can just remove that module and replace it :)
Price will go up.
Definitely
100% I remember some old laptops had this design. Graphics card actually had its own socket and was easily removable.
why the manufacturer doesn't add a protection to prevent such failure to the Vram circuit like a fuse to prevent high voltage going to the vram or the gpu
Because it would stop the sale of a new laptop!
Most of the time the fuse works only for safety only and not for saving the device itself.
there is a protection in a way of a mosfet which burned :D
ofc they could have added another mosfet or transistor to control the voltage to the vram but still 1 milisecond of this high voltage and those vrams are gone. Probably needs better cooling on those mosfets....
Because it's not economical for the manufacture
Sorin, can we re visit this one? 9ohmz on vram is normal in some cases, dual mosfet has a source and drain, most likely battery voltage will have entered and exited the mosfet without damaging vram or gpu
I just bought the same model with a dead GPU for very cheap price, not a good gaming laptop but use regularly quite good (It even play Genshin Impact low setting 720p with no problems at all)
Hi Sorin, I belive the GPU can be alive, what about entering in BIOS after remove the shorted MOSFET and see if BIOS recognize the GPU? And if yes try to replace the shorted MOSFET and eventually the VRAM... Maybe you decide so because of the cost for the computer shop? Please let me know your valutation and decision ti teach as even this aspect and not only the tecnical One.. bye Francesco Timpano from Florence Italy
youre nice to tech
The coil gave a strange sound during hibernation, sounded like an electric zapper when its connections are isolated. It happened once, and for 1 seconds. It needs high voltage to do that, at least 5000 v.
Hi. I got exactly the same ACER HELIOS 300 a few days ago. It was not turning on, and I detected that there was no AC DRIVE from the BQ Charger. Nothing seems shorted, and I got a spark while measuring the BQ signals. Now, it's turning on for a while, but goes off after a moment. Should I replace the BQ Charger?
Thank you for your videos. 🙌🏻
The strange sound on startup is the fans blowing in reverse to clean them out, they still get dusty though and need cleaning every few months..
isn't it the startup sound from acer? like asus rog
I don't think that was it, it was just a startup sound from acer predator and nothing more
I have the same laptop, i9 and a 3070, and it's pretty good but you gotta keep the temps under control on it...
Ptm 7950
Good job mate 👍
I have exactly same laptop with same problem. Local shop is saying to replace the motherboard 😢 which is costly asf.
Just happened to me yesterday after 4 yrs of use without issue...don't want to say goodbye to the laptop 😢
Got the same issue yesterday..after 2 years of use
@@55Psyco what ended up happening to yours?
@@Mario-nm4du GPU memory shorted, which shorted the whole motherboard. I ended up buying a new Laptop.
@@55Psyco so is like a non fixable problem?
Please revisit this laptop Sorin (replace mosfet and test), do not give it back until you are 100% sure the VRAM and or GPU are dead.
I have an Asus Tuf f15 (2021) gaming laptop, Spec- i5 10th gen and 1650Ti graphics. Recently I replaced the Thermal paste and pads after this I am unable to use the dGPU all apps are running in the iGPU and the dGPU utilization is 0%. What can I do?
Do you have a video that illustrates the issue with these vrams in more detail Sorin?
Where can I learn the insides and outs of the current inside kf a laptop
Thanks
How to disable the GPU on the ph315-52 model?
i have a similar issue, tho laptop works fine, it just doesnt charge.... ive looked inside, seems fine. im hoping its just the fuse on the adapter.
Can you disable the gpu on a laptop with AMD graphics? VRAM is dead, shorted mosfet, I removed the mosfet. Will power on now but no picture.
I'd like to try this on one of those old macbooks where the GPU dies...
so now the predator is prey .
Is it ok to plug in the screen while the battery is connected??
Hello. I have a question and I hope someone can answer me. We know what a binary Mosfet consists of? What happens when the Mosfet connected between the coil and ground be shorted? Will it cause harm to the GPU?
if yes, pls tell me how
There's anyway to connect an external gpu to this?
the same as my laptop but mines totally dead
Camera name please?
Not a PCH this time, but still bad news
💪💪
Hi i want to ask something in my laptop gpu isn't showing in task manager in any games etc but its showing in device manager is it hardware issue or software please tell me about your opinion
If your GPU is showing in device manager without an exclamation mark, your GPU is fine! Rest in peace!😀
what laptop is it? what's your full specification?
@@Aneesh.Asokan yes there is no exclamation mark
@@maklogetrich2378 its msi gf63 thin 9rc
@@Aneesh.Asokan also my laptop is working fine charging etc its just only gpu isn't working
Its working on Intel graphics now.
Can he buy a graphics card and connect it to the laptop ?
sad but true
This is how u work. but its not fixed. a "working" gaming laptop isnt fixed, if u cant game with it. sad, that nvidia is not selling this chips, so we cant see a real repair, with BGA and so on ^^
This happens when there is now crowbar protection. 😞
Buying new mobo....
Poate să fie GPU sau v-ram dar poate să fie și un condensator în scurt pe placa pe alimentare lângă sau sub placa de bază GPU sau v-rami... Dacă era GPU se încălzea zic eu ....
Nu pornea laptopul deloc daca mai avea si condensator in scurt si intra sursa in protectie...
@ovidiuovidius they will still heat up because they are still shorted to ground. Since he removed the MOSFETs, he essentially quarantined the short to where it can't affect anything else on the board. The gpu will still receive power, but the GPU VRAM will not since the memory controller inside the GPU is fried and those two MOSFETs were power supplies for said memory controller.
Hello🤝👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👋👋👋👋👋
waaaaw i am the first comment
Yes but a useless comment
@@xsauce3858 yes it is .i am zero in electronics but i am aloso a fun with sorin workarts. so. its sutch honor to be the first
Now it is up to the customer to decide to buy a new motherboard or use it as it is.
The Graphics is now only good for making toast 😅
Thats What happens if you overclock gpu from laptops
Is it the reason for sure ?

Doctor, help me I broke my leg. Ok, I will help you. I will remove your leg. You won't be able to run anymore, but you will still be able to hop around on one leg 😊
Your analogy is bad this is not a broken leg this is sepsis and you have option to die or to remove the leg
Thanks
