Malmö 2009 - one of my favourite Opeth bootlegs. Hearing Godhead's Lament live in this quality was transcendent. Heir Apparent and The Night and the Silent Water from this show are incredible too.

@@williamreynolds3487as a death metal singer myself, and actually someone who has the same vocal technique as Mikael (Fry voice) I can say that the screams are performed well technically speaking. He didn’t sound as low as the early live stuff, but sounds like a solid mid fry scream.

I think he started with more of a traditional fry (very “crisp” and quiet) like you said, but after Deliverance something changed (probably not wanting/being able to exert the effort it takes to do low fry screams; as a person who can get somewhat close to his harsh vocals, it’s extremely difficult). Starting with Ghost Reveries, you can hear more of a false cord technique (more “open”, if you will, and less “crisp”; I suck at describing this, but it almost sounds like more of a gargle to me), and now it’s a very common, basic false cord scream (like a grunt). Furthermore, he barely does highs anymore, which is usually associated with doing false cord screams (more difficult to go high, but not impossible); in fact, I’d argue they’ve gotten lower, which would make sense because it’s easier to go low with false cord screams. But, the fact is, no one will ever know what he was doing unless we go back in time and stick a camera down his throat lol. I’m just basing my “analysis” off of other vocalists I’ve heard and myself. Back to my original comment, no matter the technique, imo, the performances during the late 2000s and early 2010s are brutal; they don’t sound good or healthy. I guess that’s just personal preference, though, considering plenty of people don’t have a problem with them.

Yeah the album mix back in the day wasn’t really that good…if there was ever an album that deserved a remix and remaster it’s still life.
